This event is free and is at Puppet Labs. It begins at 6:30 pm with pizza, sponsored by PNSQC (Many thanks to both Puppet Labs and PNSQC for supporting agile in Portland).

November PDMA Learning and Networking Event -- EMERGING TRENDS IN PRODUCT MANAGEMENT AND MARKETING: WHICH ONES DESERVE YOUR ATTENTION?
Roll back
description |
The Oregon Chapter of the Product Development and Management Association (PDMA) invites you to its November Learning and Networking Event on Emerging Trends in Product Management and Marketing. New ideas and different approaches emerge regularly in the disciplines of product discovery, development and delivery. Examples are design thinking, open innovation and product owners for Agile. As a group, weâll assemble a list of the major trends that weâre observing. Weâll review what the industry thought leaders are talking about and then try to put these trends into context; whether they are major inflection points redefining product management or passing fads that detract from the execution of product management fundamentals.
The source material for this event is based on the presentation voted the âBest Sessionâ at Mayâs ProductCamp Portland. The session will be interactive in nature. In addition to presenting research results, weâll draw on the insights and opinions of the audience during a Q&A session to add greater depth and different perspectives. Come prepared with several trends youâve heard about which youâd like to contribute to our conversation. Hopefully, youâll leave with at least a couple of topics youâll want to explore further.
A special thanks to the Oregon Technology Business Center (OTBC) for hosting this event.

Big Data? Small Data? How market research experiments add to predictive capabilities.
Traditionally Market Research has run highly controlled experiments and built descriptive models of the data gathered. The data has typically been anything from a few hundred to a few thousand responses, but the exact make-up of the responses is well known and highly controlled. Now that we also have access to ‘Big Data’ (whatever that means) from transactional or social sources, the question arises: “Is there still value of Small Data and controlled experiments?” In this lively talk we will show how a blended Small+Big approach gives our customers the “best of both worlds”.
Chris Robson and Scott Laing are principals of Parametric Marketing, a Quantitative Research and Advanced Analytics company located in Vancouver, Washington. Parametric was founded in 2003 to provide research and analytics services to business professionals and policy makers. We specialize in analyzing consumer behavior and advising companies on the financial implications of product, pricing, promotional and brand decisions. With our expertise in advanced research, data mining and business & financial modeling, we are uniquely equipped to help our clients address their most demanding problems. In addition, Parametric’s extensive development capabilities allow us to provide outstanding value through both standard reporting approaches and interactive tools. |

Don't Let Your Bytecode Just Sit There
Java bytecode just works. It works so well that the JVM has over 250 languages that compile to bytecode. It works so well that we can usually ignore it.
But given Java bytecode's success and ubiquity, shouldn't we crack the hood and see how it works? Once you do, you may discover that bytecode manipulation is not only fun, it can be used to solve interesting problems.
In this session, we will take a look at how bytecode is represented and how to use the ASM library to view and manipulate it. We'll use the Java Instrumentation API to modify classes as they're loaded and change their behavior. |

Deemed Exports â U.S. Export Regulations & Technical Information
Roll back
description |
Controversy over the last year concerning the publishing of a Dutch scientistâs research on smallpox points up the strategic concerns with the availability of sensitive information. Most companies recognize that U.S. export control laws apply to shipments of products or technical data out of the United States to another country.
Some companies still do not realize, however, that the sharing of technology or source code with a foreign national is also an export â even when the foreign national is within the United States. Under the "deemed export rule" in the EAR - Export Administration Regulations (or parallel prohibitions under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations - ITAR, which applies to exports of military items) , a transfer of technology or source code (except encryption source code) is "deemed" to be "an export to the home country or countries of the foreign national."
This rule has important implications for any company that employs foreign nationals or has business dealings with foreign companies. Universities can be covered if hosting foreign nationals, sharing research or if involved in academic exchanges. Recent revisions to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services' regulations require human resources personnel to have an understanding of the implications of a âDeemed Exportâ and understand when the employer/institution might be required to restrict a foreign national's access to any technology until a âDeemed Exportâ license is obtained. Companies that violate the rule with respect to transfers of commercial or dual use technology and software risk civil and criminal fines, potential loss of export privileges, and negative publicity.
This afternoon program will provide an overview of the deemed export regulations, proposed revisions and measures and practices necessary to comply with the rules. The presentation will cover the exceptions to the regulations and suggests ways in which to structure a compliance program so that company, university and research staff are aware of the regulations and their responsibilities. Presenters will include attorneys from Dorsey & Whitney, Ater Wynne and the Export Compliance Manager from Oregon Health Sciences University.
