Writing your own programming language can be very different from writing a program in an existing language. However, it is less intimidating than many people assume. This Friday, Brian Shirai from Engine Yard will present a talk about features of the Rubinius dynamic language platform that make writing your own programming language simple and fun.
All are welcome to attend. If you have a talk that you'd like to suggest presenting, please email it to [email protected] along with a brief outline of what you'd like to cover. |

Portland JavaScript Admirers' Monthly Meeting
Roll back
| description |
<b>Please note that the monthly meet-ups are no longer at Jive Software!</b>
The monthly meeting of Portland's first JavaScript and ECMAscript users' group. We host presentations and discussions on everything JavaScript-related - including JavaScript frameworks, node.js, CoffeeScript, and whatever else comes up.
On the agenda for this month we have two speakers:
<ul>
<li>Ward Cunningham - How JavaScript has enabled work on the Smallest Federated Wiki
</li>
<li>Phillip Kerman - CreateJS, a set of libraries for drawing with HTML5 canvas, and upgrading Flash interfaces to HTML5
</li>
<li>Jake Feasel = Unit testing with QUnit and Continuous Integration with Travis-CI for JavaScript projects
</li>
</ul>
On top of that, this marks four years of JavaScript Admirers meetings!
Scott Becker and I organized the first meeting at CubeSpace in
January 2009. Come help us celebrate! There may be cake!
Feel free to join our mailing list at http://groups.google.com/group/pdxjs if you too are a JavaScript admirer. Or visit our web site for more information at http://pdxjs.com/.
If you're interested in making a presentation at a future meet-up, please e-mail [email protected].
Oh, and there will be free pizza and beer as always! |

Groups all over the US will be meeting up for an <a href="http://www.openstreetmap.us/2013/01/522/">OpenStreetMap Edit-a-thon</a>, and we'll be having a Portland get-together too!
<a href="http://www.openstreetmap.org/">OpenStreetMap</a>, sometimes called "the Wikipedia of maps" is <a href="http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Main_Page">a free worldwide basemap that anyone can use and edit</a>. Even if you've never edited OSM before, you're welcome to join us. Bring a laptop (and mouse, if you have one--it helps!) and your local knowledge.
We'll have a short "Intro to OpenStreetMap" talk around 3, and cheerfully provide assistance with setting up OSM editing software and learning how to add and edit features. Latecomers are a-ok!

Today it announced the National Day Of Civic Hacking on June 1-2 where many government agencies will liberate data for citizens across the U.S. to use to build tech that helps their communities. Twenty-seven cities have planned events where hackers will have access to data from The Department of Labor, The Census Bureau, and even NASAâs space stats.
The National Day Of Civic Hacking is a joint project from the U.S. government, Code For America, Random Hacks Of Kindness, and Eric Schmidtâs early-stage venture fund Innovation Endeavors. Part of a growing initiative to increase government transparency and civic engagement,..."

Technology Association of Oregon Legal Forum - Trademark, Copyright, and Design Patent Boot Camp
Roll back
| description |
Treating the three categories of IP (trademark, copyright, and design patent) as individual strategies is one way of protecting your IP however these same three categories can be used synergistically to create a cohesive IP policy that will provide greater protection overall.
Learn from Craig Morris, Managing Attorney for Trademark Outreach United States Patent and Trademark Office as he kicks off the Trademark, Copyright, and Design Patent Boot Camp on February 14th. Craig will give a general overview identifying the differences between the three categories as well as domain names and business registrations. He will discuss the basic process and strategy for protecting each, review basic considerations for each, and discuss how they should be used collectively for maximum protection.
Additional Topics:
â¢To register or not to register
â¢How to enforce?
â¢Importance of selecting a strong mark, that is, both federally registrable and legally protectable
â¢Whether an attorney should be used when doing the initial search
â¢Potential grounds for the USPTO to refuse registration
â¢What may happen if another trademark owner believes it has stronger rights
â¢How to avoid scams perpetrated by companies the request fees for services not required by the USPTO

•To register or not to register
•How to enforce?
•Importance of selecting a strong mark, that is, both federally registrable and legally protectable
•Whether an attorney should be used when doing the initial search
•Potential grounds for the USPTO to refuse registration
•What may happen if another trademark owner believes it has stronger rights
•How to avoid scams perpetrated by companies the request fees for services not required by the USPTO
Concluding Craig Morris’s overview there will be three breakout sessions which will focus on how each category applies to one product, i.e. iPod, Nike shoes, Coke bottle, etc. The outcome of the sessions is to demonstrate how a design patent can and should be linked to trademark and copyright.

We decided to create our own open meetup to discuss and learn about the Internet of Things. We encourage the curious, the hackers the entrepreneurs and the executives who are engaging in this area to come join us to listen to talks, share in conversation and networking. Each session we will have talks, "show and tells "and space to hack and network with others. Modelled on two phenomenally influential and successful groups, Mobile Monday and the catalytic Silicon Valley Homebrew Computer Club, we hope that we too can enable fun and exploration with this new technology area. |
