description nil Join the Portland game development community in an awesome games showcase from the Global Game Jam and other local projects! Over the course of a 48 hour weekend this recent January, game developers and enthusiasts from 300+ cities around the world worked to create their very own games, many of which we will have available for play! Developers from the Portland jam will also be on site, telling us their own team- and personally-oriented experiences and challenges they faced over the weekend. This event is also open for free to any additional exhibitors who want to showcase a game-related project for the evening. If you are interested in having a table at the Global Game Jam Postmortem, please e-mail Will at pigsquad (at) gmail [dot] com!

create Calagator::Event 1250463753 March PADNUG - Mobile First Responsive Design by Jason Grigsby Roll back

description nil Mobile first and responsive web design aren’t simply two great tastes that go great together. No they represent much more than that. Mobile first responsive web design is the responsible way to build responsive designs. Mobile first responsive web design is the best way to build something that is both responsive from a layout AND a performance perspective. But if mobile first is the right way to do responsive design, then why are so few people doing it? In this presentation, we’ll dig into why mobile first responsive design matters and the five techniques necessary to make it work. Jason Grigsby was one of the project leads on the Obama iPhone Application and helped design the user interface for the Wall Street Journal’s Blackberry application. He founded and organizes Mobile Portland, a local mobile development user group. Jason built his first web page in 1995. He has spent the last 11 years building web sites professionally before being bitten by the mobile bug prompting him to throw caution to the wind and start a new company focused on mobile and web development. He blogs at CloudFour.com (http://cloudfour.com/) and can be found on Twitter as @grigs (http://twitter.com/grigs). create Calagator::Event 1250463750 Personal Telco Project's "Build OpenWrt" Play Day Roll back

description nil The Personal Telco Project uses OpenWrt heavily in devices it uses to build wifi infrastructure around Portland, almost always building the firmware from source, adapted to the particular purpose. The purpose might be a standardized node, a mesh networking node, or it might be a highly adapted solution to something like a data logger application. This play day is intended to help spread the knowledge of how Personal Telco constructs these firmwares and, more generally, the finer points of how to build OpenWrt for any particular purpose you might have. And, if you find we do it in an idiotic way, you can suggest improvements. ;-) This is a hands-on event. Bring yourself, your curiosity, and a linux box you can build on (or a way to connect over the network to one, like me). You can bring a device too, but this is primarily a software-focused event. If there is enough time, we could start looking at flashing problems. If there is enough interest, we could have a follow up Play Day that focuses on those issues, a kind of Linux Clinic for your router. Come on out and have some fun!

create Calagator::Event 1250463749 Galois Tech Talk: Parametricity, Quotient types, and Theorem transfer Roll back

description nil Presented by Brian Huffman. A polymorphic function may be instantiated at many different types; if the function is parametrically polymorphic, then all of its instances must behave uniformly. Reynolds' parametricity theorem expresses this precisely, in terms of binary relations derived from types. One application of the parametricity theorem is to derive Wadler-style "free theorems" about a polymorphic function from its type; e.g. rev :: [a] -> [a] must satisfy map f (rev xs) = rev (map f xs). In this talk, I will show how to apply many of the ideas behind parametricity and free theorems in a new setting: formal reasoning about quotient types. Using types-as-binary-relations, we can automatically prove that corresponding propositions about quotient types and their representation types are logically equivalent. This design is implemented as the Transfer package in the Isabelle theorem prover, where it is used to automate many proofs about quotient types.

update Calagator::Event 1250463682 QA Forum: 2013 the Year of Responsive Web Design Roll back

description As mobile web usage has exploded over the past few years, Responsive Web Design (RWD) has become one of the go-to solutions to provide content across a universe of different browsers and devices. Apps and websites have merged into one. In simple terms, a responsive web design uses "media queries" to figure out what resolution of device it's being served on. Flexible images and fluid grids then size correctly to fit the screen. From a QA view, how can we effectively test RWD. The Technology Association of Oregon (TAO) is excited to provide an opportunity to gather and discuss lessons learned and real life strategies to test these applications. On Thursday, February 28th, the Quality Assurance Forum of the TAO is presenting a panel discussion on Responsive Web Design – Testing. Come join us for an engaging evening with your SQA peers centered on how to test Responsive Web. Panelists: Lyza Danger Gardner, co-founder, Cloud Four Since co-founding Portland, Ore.-based mobile web start-up Cloud Four (http://www.cloudfour.com) in 2007, Lyza has tortured and thrilled herself with the intricate ins and outs of the bazillion devices and browsers now accessing the web globally. Lyza and co-founder Jason Grigsby are the authors of Head First Mobile Web. Trent Peterson, co-founder, AppThwack - Trent Peterson spent seven years at Intel designing system-automation solutions trusted to test products used by millions of customers with an emphasis on simplicity and user experience. He left in early 2012 to co-found AppThwack,a mobile app testing service that helps developers quickly and automatically test their apps on real devices. Pawel Wojnarowicz, co-founder, AppThwack - Pawel Wojnarowicz built an automation platform in his spare time that became the official solution for testing all wireless products at Intel. Pawel left after nine years to co-found AppThwack, a mobile app testing service that helps developers quickly and automatically test their apps on real devices.
