Mobile Portland - Two Strikes, You're Out: The Importance of Testing
Roll back
| description |

Did you know 84% of users report that they'll uninstall an app after two crashes?
Did you know that there are 32,000 new apps each month in the iOS and Play markets combined?
Increased competition and increasing complexity in app development mean testing is simultaneously more important and more difficult. This discussion will cover the importance of being proactive with regards to quality, from developing with testing in mind to implementing automated tests. It will also provide an overview of tools and services that can help with quality throughout an app's development and deployment.
About the Speakers
Pawel Wojnarowicz, Founder, AppThwack
Pawel built an automation platform in his spare time that became the official solution for testing all wireless products at Intel. Pawel left after nine years to co-found AppThwack, a mobile app testing service that helps developers and QA teams quickly and automatically test their apps on real devices.
Trent Peterson, Founder, AppThwack
Trent spent seven years at Intel designing system-automation solutions trusted to test products used by millions of customers with an emphasis on simplicity and user experience. He left in early 2012 to co-found AppThwack, a mobile app testing service that helps developers and QA teams quickly and automatically test apps on real devices. |

When PHP and MySQL can be programmed by anyone, who could start a new phenomenon like eBay or Craiglist? More importantly, who could be bothered to get behind it as a new user, with so many other things available?
If Facebook's decline is not interrupted, how could Twitter or any variation of social media hope to fill the same connective role? Aren't things getting worse?
This is a pattern of fragmentation, increasing and separating. The end of the mobile world has arrived as well, with new iPhones and Androids only enhancing their previous capabilities, unable to make any progress beyond superficial features.
All that was fantasized to have at one's fingertips by AT&T commercials in the 1990's is now available, with videos, streaming, maps, and videoconferencing. What is left? Isn't technology over?
Director Park has free wifi and seating is usually available. |

Building a Kick-Ass company is more than just difficult—it’s a high-wire act that challenges even the most skilled product development acrobats, and there’s no net. Just look at Tim Cook’s apology for Apple’s Maps application—The company that danced on the wire for so long had to swallow its pride when it kicked its own ass. What can we learn from that catastrophe? More importantly, how do you know when your product is ready to kick ass, and when your ass is hanging out?
About the Speaker
Charles Austen Angell (@AustenAngell) is Founder and President of Modern Edge, Inc. based in Portland Oregon. With more than 25 years of professional experience in Industrial Design, he has worked with industry leaders in Health & Wellness, Mobility, Home Products and Experiential Environments.
A native Australian, Mr. Angell has traveled extensively through Europe, the Americas, Africa, China, Southeast Asia, and Australia examining the role of culture, politics and geography in shaping our evolving global design industry. Mr. Angell is passionate about creating new markets and designing product relationships that transcend cultural borders to enhance our shared human experience.
Mr. Angell is the Chairman-Elect on the Board of the Industrial Design Society of America and was the Chairman of the 2012 IDSA International Conference in Boston, “THE FUTURE IS…” He was one of the original five trustees for the Design Foundation, a public charity supporting design education through educational and social responsibility. Through his numerous speaking engagements, publications and teaching, Mr. Angell is committed to increasing the value of human creativity to benefit human society and commerce. Mr. Angell is a graduate of Purdue University. |

Why is Amazon.com popular, but BarnesandNoble.com not in the same way or to the same degree? Why might it be difficult to start a new eBay-like website or Craigslist in the current Internet environment? Could Sean Parker and Shawn Fanning's Airtime, an effort to overturn new trends, have signified that the decline of the web is near?
We will discuss these things in an informal discussion in the general seating area of Director's Park, next to the long wooden bench. This event will be B.Y.O.Tea. and there will be no cover charge or V.I.P.
The park has free wifi, and seating is usually available. |

Ping me at 503 890 8036 if the door locks for any reason. Everyone should be able to get in just fine without needing to.
Also: Yellow Line & Green Line stop just 1 block away and almost every bus line in the city stops within 1-2 blocks on the bus mall. The #6 & related buses stop on the east/west streets parallel to the building or 1 block away.
Biking: watch out for the tracks, they're sketch. Best routes is to come up and down the bus/rail mall in the bike/car travel lane. From the east side head over the Hawthorne Bridge, then turn onto 5th.
Driving: there is on street & other parking, generally ranges from free to $3 bucks to park. If you see a higher price, keep looking there's bound to be something nearby. |

Mastering Requirements Gathering
Roll back
| description |
**7 PDUs available for this course**
##Course Description
A proper set of requirements are the backbone of all successful projects. Poor requirements inevitably lead to poor project performance. Requirements provide the essential link between the goal of the project and the design of outputs and products. Poor requirements, by themselves, lead to rework and subsequent schedule and budget overruns, flawed designs, failed quality and testing programs, and customer dissatisfaction.
This course teaches participants how to elicit, characterize, document, analyze, validate, verify and manage requirements for new projects, products and services. This is a must have for anyone who will be part of delivering or managing a project and includes tools, flowcharts and courseware that leverage industry best practices for successfully managing and delivering requirements to stakeholders..

Saturday Morning @ Sisters Coffee : Pearl District Hackers
Roll back
| description |
Pearl District Hackers
This meeting is for fellow coders, hackers, and designers to get together on a weekly/bi-weekly basis to work on their projects side by side with others in the community over a few cups of coffee. These meetups will not be a presentation based format, rather, the vision is a small table in a great coffee shop in the pearl packed with laptops, writing code, formatting comps, but most importantly getting shit done. No sales people or recruiters! All languages welcome. This is an alternative to spending a chunk of change on a monthly co-working membership.

LOCAL GRASSROOTS ORGANIZATION OFFERING FREE SEMINAR ON PLANTING A HOME GARDEN
Fresh Start Restorative Health Services is an organization working to end our nationâs health crisis by encouraging Portlanders to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Fresh Start believes that our nation, doesnât have to suffer with diabetes, heart disease, or obesity if we just have the right information and support to take care of our bodies properly.
On Saturday, April 20th, the organization will hold a seminar on planting a home garden. Attendees will learn to Save money on groceries, eat 100% organic, avoid genetically modified organisms, and join the movement of over 41Million US households whoâve planted one. The seminar is open to the public, free of charge, and aimed at helping local families avoid the horrors of preventable disease without breaking the bank in the process. Dr. Steven Bailey, national author and lecturer, will be the speaker of the lecture. Participants can engage Dr. Bailey in Q&A regarding diet and lifestyle, munch on free healthy snacks, and enter to win a free door prize.
Portlander and Fresh Start participant Ma Kelly speaks highly of the organization, saying, âIâve spent hours in nutritional classes at OHSU every month. Iâve learned more in one Fresh Start class than all of those clinics.â
Fresh Start encourages attendees to bring their children, who can participate in Kids Club, a program that educates children on the benefits of healthy eating and exercise. Kids ages 7 to 13 are welcome.

UnityPDX: Portland's Unity3D user group

The monthly meeting for Unity3D developers, enthusiasts and those curious about the framework. Come learn a bit about Unity3D, share what you're working on, see what others are working on, or jump into a few simple tutorials and start building something fun with us.
UnityPDX meets every third Thursday. It's easy to remember because "third" sounds a bit like "Thursday."
Unity is a game engine used primarily to build 3D mobile games, but it's useful for 2D games as well. The engine exports to all sorts of platforms, including iOS, Android and Flash for desktops. |
