Lucky Labrador Beer Hall (1945 NW Quimby) is located in an old Freightliner Trucking warehouse in the final frontier of inner Northwest Portland. With it's wide open feel and the pub resident five ton crane hovering above the tables, the Lab makes for a very casual place to hang out for a pint. Serving bento, sandwiches, salads, and other pub fare, our pub is a great place to chill out by yourself or congregate with a group of friends, family, or associates. |

HiMSS - Oregon Chapter presents: "Countdown to Meltdown? Preparing Your Organization for Health Reform & the Brave New Healthcare World"
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
HiMSS Oregon http://www.himss-oregon.org/ welcomes â J.D. Kleinke a pioneering health care information entrepreneur, medical economist, author, policy expert, and business strategist.
WHEN: Thursday, March 14th, 2013 from 5:00pm-8:30pm
5:00-6:00 â Registration and Networking
6:00-7:30 â Presentation**
7:30-8:30 â Networking Reception
WHERE: The Nines Hotel, 525 SW Morrison, Portland, Oregon 97204
DETAILS:
What does the actual health reform plan look like, what happens when 30 million new people enter the âsystemâ as we know it, and what will it all mean for your organization? âObamacareâ has survived the Supreme Court, but the health reform law itself may be overshadowed by larger shifts in market power - and continuing government budget crises, as lawmakers target Medicare and Medicaid as sources of major savings. This session provides a critical overview of where health care stands today; the latest on spending trends and market dynamics; and how the health reform plan will play out for all major stakeholders, including providers, payers, employers, patients and consumers. This session examines the concurrent effects of the reform plan, health insurance market upheavals, increasing patient economic empowerment, and emerging information technologies on todayâs health care organization. And it lays out a practical framework and set of critical success factors for your organization going forward, as health care faces the greatest challenges and changes in our lifetimes.
J.D.Kleinke has been instrumental in the creation of four health care information organizations, most notably HealthGrades. He has helped hospital systems, insurers and physician groups prepare for medical computerization and health reform; provided business, product and technology strategy services to new and established health care companies; and sat on the Boards of several public and privately held health information companies. In 2012, he was a Resident Fellow of the American Enterprise Institute. Mr. Kleinke has authored three books on the U.S. health care system, Bleeding Edge: The Business of Health Care in the New Century and Oxymorons: The Myth of a U.S. Health Care System, and Catching Babies (2011). His work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Barronâs, Health Affairs, JAMA, the British Medical Journal, Modern Healthcare, Managed Healthcare, Forbes, and numerous other publications. Since his earliest writings on health policy and market dynamics in The Wall Street Journal in the early 1990s, Mr. Kleinke has long been known as a forceful, non-partisan advocate for an evidence-driven, computerized, patient-centric health care system.
**This program has been submitted for review and approval of continuing education (CE) hours for use in fulfilling the continuing education requirements of the Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHMS)
Registration is now open for the conference. https://secure100.telusys.net/gregistration-bin/display2_preview?&ctid=1696121847441156&rfid=9659143976368037&tmid=136

http://www.joomlapdx.com/events/presentations/33-march-2013-joomla-open-house
We know... You're thinking "OMG, a Joomla Open House!!!!! ... Errrr, wait a minute, what is a Joomla Open House, exactly?"
Great question. In short, it's a gathering of (1) Joomla fanatics, (2) Joomla newbies, (3) Joomla-curious, and (4) others who maybe aren't totally "in love" with Joomla, but who might not mind fooling around a little bit with Joomla if there's beer involved, if you know what we mean. (Okay, actually, we don't even know what we mean by that one.)
What we were thinking was: If you've got a web site and are having some technical difficulties, then come to our open house, bring (1) any Joomla, web development, technical, or philosophical questions you like, no matter how easy or tough they are, (2) your laptops if you want to do some work right then and there (or, we may also project your site up onto the wall and work on it in front of others, if that's cool with you), and (3) your admin usernames/passwords, of course, if you want us to be able to look at your Joomla issues. And, if you have a "service dog," bring him or her along, too -- because, remember, here in Portland, no one ever asks you to verify whether your pooch is or isn't working. Anyway, your humble Joomla in-house experts will then roll up our sleeves and do the best we can to either fix your issue or at least point you in the right direction.
Types of tech difficulties: Actually, we're fairly open-minded here... Bring us any web-development challenge you're having and we're happy to talk about it -- even it it's not 100% Joomla-related. For example, maybe you're having trouble using CSS, or you're facing a user experience challenge, or you don't understand how MySQL works, or you need a little bit of PHP wizardry. Bring it on. We're not saying we'll actually solve your issue right then and there, but we're certain that we're geeky enough to probably give you way too many vague answers and contradictory directions. (On second thought, maybe don't come. ... No, we're kidding; DO come, okay?)
Please join us!
-= The Skinny =-
WHAT? Joomla! Open! House!
WHEN? March 14th, 2013 -- 5:45 p.m. to 8-ish / maybe 8:30 / or, like, whenever.
WHERE? At Backstage (3702 SE Hawthorne -- just behind the Bagdad Theater in SE PDX).
HOW? Oh, you mean how much? It's FREE!!
WHY? Because Joomla rocks and all other CMSs are laughably inferior. |

Agile PDX presents Max Guernsey, "Test-Driven Database Development"
Roll back
| description |
As developers, we've created heuristics that help us build robust systems and employed test-driven development (TDD) to improve code design and counter instability. Yet object-oriented development principles and TDD have failed to gain traction in the database world. Thatâs because database development involves an additional driving forceâthe data.
Max Guernsey shows how to treat databases as objects with classes of their ownârather than as containers of objectsâand how to drive database designs from tests. He illustrates a way to give these database classes the ability to upgrade old data without introducing undue risk. Max also shares how to apply good object-oriented design principles to database classes and how to enforce semantic connections between databases and clients. Max demonstrates how it all works together, ensuring that your production databases work exactly the same as test databases, minimizing the risk of design changes, and enabling client applications to more easily keep up with database changes.
_Speaker Bio_
Max Guernsey is currently a Managing Member at Hexagon Software LLC. He has 15 years of experience as a professional software developer. For nearly half that time, he has been blogging, writing, and delivering lectures on the topic of agile and test-driven database development. For much of Maxâs professional career, he has been a consultant, advising a variety of software companies in many different industries using multiple programming and database technologies. In most of these engagements, he spent months or even years helping teams implement cutting-edge techniques such as test-driven development, object-oriented design, acceptance-test-driven development, and agile planning.
Max has always been a âhands-onâ consultant, working with teams for long periods of time to help them build both software and skills. This series of diverse, yet deep, engagements helped him gain a unique understanding of the database-related testing and design problems that impede most agile teams. Since 2005, he has been thinking, writing, blogging, lecturing, and creating developer-facing software dedicated to resolving these issues.
Max posts regularly on his Twitter account (@MaxGuernseyIII) and his blog (maxg3prog.blogspot.com). |

Modern Web Development Workshop
Roll back
| description |

We all know that staying on top of recent web trends, tools, and best practices isn't easy. The Modern Web Dev workshop will explore a number of resources that will, at the very least, help you launch a simple, elegant website by the end of the day. If that's all you want—fantastic! If, however, you're interested in front-end development, whether you're just getting into the field or simply haven't had the time to keep up with the latest and greatest, you'll leave with a good understanding of a few different ways to build sites quickly, efficiently, and intelligently. We'll discuss **Bootstrap**, **SCSS**, **Jekyll**, **Github**, and even touch on responsive design and jQuery. Everything we'll cover is free/open source, smart, forward-thinking, and made by developers for themselves and their peers—built as solutions to specific problems.
Visit [modernwebworkshop.com](http://modernwebworkshop.com) for all the details about the workshop and registration info. |

The Use of Cadence in Agile and Traditional Projects: Sprint Length, Integration Frequency, and Other Matters of Rhythm

The Use of Cadence in Agile and Traditional Projects: Sprint Length, Integration Frequency, and Other Matters of Rhythm
Presented by Kathy Iberle
Dates/Times: Thursday, March 14, 2013: Networking @ 5:30-6:30 PM; Seminar 6:30-7:30 PM
Abstract:
A sprint is just one example of the use of cadence or rhythm to make a process more efficient. Once you understand the fundamentals of cadence, you can apply cadence in both agile and traditional projects to reduce overhead and coordinate activities. Learn how to determine the ideal sprint length for your project, find out when continuous integration wonât help, and discover other ways that cadence can benefit your project! This talk explores the science behind the concept of a âproject heartbeatâ using 2nd-generation Lean thinking.
Bio:
Kathy Iberle is an expert at producing high-quality software and high-tech products using practical methods. She worked in a variety of fields during her long career at Hewlett-Packard - electronic instruments, medical products, printers, and Internet applications â and she has seen development from a range of perspectives: software developer, quality engineer, test lab manager, requirements manager, agile coach, process improvement expert. Kathy has a deep knowledge of the underlying theory behind agile and Lean development, combined with a flair for pragmatic applications, which has enabled her to successfully extend software agile development methods into areas where most people think âagile just canât workâ.
Kathy reviewed technical papers for the Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference (PNSQC) for many years, served as co-chair of PNSQCâs Program Committee in 2009, participated in the invitation-only Software Test Managers Roundtable for five years, and has published regularly since 1997. Kathy has an M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Washington, and an excessive collection of degrees in Chemistry from the University of Washington and the University of Michigan. Visit her website: www.kiberle.com
A Special Treat from PNSQC
Plan on coming early! In collaboration with the Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference (PNSQC) the SPIN meeting will have pizza and pop provided by PNSQC beginning at 5:30 pm.

Impala Technical Deep Dive
Mark Grover, Hive contributer and author of "Programming Hive"
Join us for this technical deep dive about Cloudera Impala, the project that makes scalable parallel databse technology available to the Hadoop community for the first time. Impala is an open-sourced code base that allows users to issue low-latency queries to data stored in HDFS and Apache HBase using familiar SQL operators. We will begin with an overview of Impala from the user's perspective, followed by an overview of Impala's architecture and implementation, and will conclude with a comparison of Impala with Apache Hive, commercial MapReduce alternatives and traditional data warehouse infrastructure. |
