description nil Whether you're a home subscriber, a newsstand regular, or an impulse shopper in the grocery checkout lane, we've all enjoyed these periodical publications! --- Do you like original puzzles? Not the jigsaw type, but the wordplay and logic type? Do you like beer? Then join us in Portland or Seattle for PUZZLED PINT! description nil COPIOUS is a user-centered digital experience agency. We build digital products with the user at heart and technology in our bones. We recently moved to a new office and now have a large space to host our TechTalks. **About TechTalks:** COPIOUSLabs TechTalks series meets every other Friday at 1pm at the COPIOUS offices. Our talks span artificial intelligence, new programming languages and techniques, computational linguistics, geographic data processing, systems and software architecture, augmented reality, network security, and more as proposed to the Copious engineering team. **About this talk:** Speaker: [Ben Kaplin,](http://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=1513908&locale=en_US&trk=tyah) Systems & Automation Engineer Datomic leverages distributed storage systems, functional programming and a radical change in information-system architecture to achieve screaming fast write throughput and elastically scalable reads, all while hewing to the Clojure mantra of simplicity in design and engineering. In the grand finale to our Databases series, Ben will present on the Datomic architecture; the Datalog query language and wax philosophical about the value of programming models that match our mental models. Join us and learn how to bring time as a first-class concept into your data store. All are welcome to attend. If you have a talk that you'd like to suggest presenting, please email it to [email protected] along with a brief outline of what you'd like to cover.

update Calagator::Event 1250464510 ChickTech Problem-Storming for Nonprofits Roll back

description Let's use our skills to make our community a better place for women and girls! Are you a woman interested in brainstorming and creating solutions for a nonprofit? We're bringing in nonprofits who are focused on women and girls (or issues that women and girls struggle with) who have something that they've been struggling with...and our goal is to have a viable solution for each of them by the end of the weekend! Although each project will have a tech component, women with expertise in many different areas wil be vital to creating a solid and successful solution. Each team will consist of 7-10 women with a variety of backgrounds. Some of the areas the teams will need expertise in include technology, nonprofits, marketing, business, psychology, education, and design. We'll kick off with heavy hors d'oeuvres Friday evening and everyone will choose their projects and meet their team members. Saturday and Sunday, it's all up to the teams to create something amazing! At 4pm Sunday, we'll hear from each team about their solution, and we'll adjourn at 5:30. Also, we'd love to hear ideas on how to help teams continue working on their projects for the nonprofits! A light breakfast, lunch and snacks are provided Saturday and Sunday. Childcare will be provided on-site. And we would *love* to have some supportive techie guys help out with the childcare in order to break yet another stereotype! We're hoping to have some fun, hands-on activities for the kids too, depending on ages (and age ranges). Please let us know if you have a nonprofit you think would like to be involved and get some free problem-solving, or if you'd like to be a volunteer and help to organize this event. All people who identify as women are welcome, although we have set a lower limit on age to 15. However, we are open to persuasion...if you are a young woman under 15, feel free to contact us. Sliding scale fee. All fees collected are donations that go to paying for the costs associated with this event. Anything above cost keeps ChickTech K-12 programs free for their participants. ChickTech's fiscal sponsor is TechStart, a registered 501c3. Event Schedule Friday: 6:30p - 9p hors d'oeuvres, choose projects, meet teams! Saturday: 9:30a - 5:30p breakfast, work with teams, lunch, more work! Sunday: 9:30a - 5:30p breakfast, work, lunch, work, present (not the noun, the verb)! Questions? Email us at [email protected]! He’s worn many hats and titles; his current is Harbinger of Doom (no really, it is on his business card). <strong>Demo time!</strong> After the talk/Q&A, we will reserve time for folks to demo their favorite security/privacy tech tool. update Calagator::Event 1250464613 PDXScala Monthly Meeting Roll back

description Come join other Scala fans, whether you're a seasoned oldtimer or complete beginner. We'll have open discussions and a variety of presentations and examples. If you have topics you're interested in hearing more about or something you'd like to give a presentation on, please let us know! Also, feel free to bring code you'd like to show off or get input on from the rest of the group! As we've been doing for some months now, the first hour of tonight's meeting will be oriented towards people who are new to Scala. If you have questions you'd like to ask about general usage, specific libraries, or overall understanding of the ecosystem, we'll be here to help you find your way. For everyone else, we'll have plenty of extra time tonight for any other discussions and topics, so if you have something you'd like to talk about or code you'd like to show, come prepared! We'll have pizza here at 6, so come early if you're hungry. Come join other Scala fans, whether you're a seasoned old-timer or complete beginner. Also, feel free to bring code you'd like to show off or get input on from the rest of the group! This month, we're actually planning something a little bit different form even our new format. I (Thomas Lockney) will be giving a quick introduction to Scalatron (http://scalatron.github.io/), which is a fun way to learn and hone Scala skills in a group environment. The idea is that you build Scala-based "bots" that compete against each other in a common environment. Depending on how the group feels, we can potentially just spend the evening focused on this. But we'll also have time, if people are interested, to explore other topics, as well. We'll have pizza here at 6, so come early if you're hungry. We look forward to see you all there!

update Calagator::Event 1250464612 pdxfunc: Portland Functional Programming Study Group Roll back

description <i>ABOUT THE GROUP: Join programmers, researchers and enthusiasts to discuss functional programming. pdxfunc is a study/user group exploring the world of functional programming based in Portland, Oregon. The group welcomes programmers interested in all functional languages, including Haskell, OCaml, Erlang, Scala and others, as well as using functional techniques in non-functional languages. The group meets regularly and provides presentations, demos and discussions applicable to all skill levels, from newbies and experts. The meetings are usually on the second Monday of the month. </i> This month we're happy to have Carl Howells presenting "A Tale of Two Libraries, or How Recent GHC Features Make Type Hackery Easier Than API Design", stemming from his recent work on a haskell library using many of the new type system features added in GHC 7.4 and 7.6. Topics will include type-level naturals and their reification via singleton types, lifted data types, kind polymorphism, and fiddly GHC details that make all these things slightly less awesome than they should be. Also included will be an object lesson in the dangers of naming and releasing too early. Also, we'll have Lyle Kopnicky talking on "Just-in-Time Compilation in Haskell". create Calagator::Event 1250464700 Quality Enablement through Agile Testing Roll back

description nil Producing high quality software, closely aligned with the constantly changing requirements of business stakeholders is more important than ever. Especially in an Agile development setting, every team member has to ensure that their work is of the highest quality – all the time. Testers can verify quality but not ensure it – proper QA procedures and a quality mindset are essential for high performance development teams. During this event, your local Microsoft Developer Technology Specialist will provide you an inside look at Black Box Testing, show you the capabilities of Microsoft Test Manager, and address the Developer’s experience in quality enablement through white box testing. Furthermore, we’ll cover how quality is an accountability and addressable by the entire development organization. You’ll also have an opportunity to learn the value of Build, Deploy, Test, and Lab Management from our ALM Partner, Crosslake Technologies, and gain exposure to enterprise cloud based cross platform application testing with Perfecto Mobile. We look forwarding to seeing you there!
