Deliverables like static wireframes or rounds of Photoshop comps provide a muted glimpse of the experiences they are trying to represent, which often result in mismanaged expectations and wasted resources. Erin Kurtz, Substance's Experience Director, will present some of the ways we are redefining our methods and deliverables by capitalizing on the broadening skill sets of our UX, Design and Development teams to work smarter and more efficiently in our User Experience and Visual Design phases.

I'm pretty excited for this talk, as the design web field could use a bit of disruption. update Calagator::Event 1250464510 **RESCHEDULED** ChickTech Problem-Storming for Nonprofits Roll back

description **NEW DATES AND MORE DETAILS ON NONPROFITS TO COME!** Let's use our skills to make our community a better place for women and girls! Are you a woman interested in brainstorming and creating solutions for a nonprofit? We're bringing in nonprofits who are focused on women and girls (or issues that women and girls struggle with) who have something that they've been struggling with...and our goal is to have a viable solution for each of them by the end of the weekend! Although each project will have a tech component, women with expertise in many different areas wil be vital to creating a solid and successful solution. Each team will consist of 7-10 women with a variety of backgrounds. Some of the areas the teams will need expertise in include technology, nonprofits, marketing, business, psychology, education, and design. We'll kick off with heavy hors d'oeuvres Friday evening and everyone will choose their projects and meet their team members. Saturday and Sunday, it's all up to the teams to create something amazing! At 4pm Sunday, we'll hear from each team about their solution, and we'll adjourn at 5:30. Also, we'd love to hear ideas on how to help teams continue working on their projects for the nonprofits! A light breakfast, lunch and snacks are provided Saturday and Sunday. Childcare will be provided on-site. And we would *love* to have some supportive techie guys help out with the childcare in order to break yet another stereotype! We're hoping to have some fun, hands-on activities for the kids too, depending on ages (and age ranges). Please let us know if you have a nonprofit you think would like to be involved and get some free problem-solving, or if you'd like to be a volunteer and help to organize this event. All people who identify as women are welcome, although we have set a lower limit on age to 15. However, we are open to persuasion...if you are a young woman under 15, feel free to contact us. Sliding scale fee. All fees collected are donations that go to paying for the costs associated with this event. Anything above cost keeps ChickTech K-12 programs free for their participants. ChickTech's fiscal sponsor is TechStart, a registered 501c3. Event Schedule Friday: 6:30p - 9p hors d'oeuvres, choose projects, meet teams! Saturday: 9:30a - 5:30p breakfast, work with teams, lunch, more work! Sunday: 9:30a - 5:30p breakfast, work, lunch, work, present (not the noun, the verb)! Questions? Email us at [email protected]! create Calagator::Event 1250464696 CHIFOO Presents: Using Value to Position Design, UX, and HCI More Strategically In an Organization Roll back

description nil Demonstrating the value of design in business is key to positioning design, UX and HCI more strategically in an organization. Yet demonstrating this has been a vexing challenge for designers. Using metrics that matter to leaders as the kernel in a story is key to meeting business leaders halfway in their quest to understand what design, UX and HCI can do for them. Furthermore, contrary to popular belief, there is not a clear-cut set of metrics, a “clip of silver bullets”, that works for all situations. What to measure then, is highly situational. Design Thinking is perfect for developing solutions to highly situational challenges. This presentation will cover the presenter’s examples and experiences in successfully applying Design Thinking to demonstrate the value of design, UX and HCI to business in: •Determining what to measure for a situation •Measuring what matters to key stakeholders •Designing a viable, sustained measurement system •Communicating the results with impact to key stakeholders About the Speaker Steve Sato is the founder of Sato+Partners, a management consulting and organization development firm by and for design leaders. Steve works with executives, directors and their teams to build experience, design and innovation capability through using existing work to bootstrap. Previously, Steve was at Hewlett-Packard and led its customer-centered strategy and planning consultancy, then later in Corporate Design, led building experience design capability across the company. Steve was formerly at Doblin Group as a design planner and also at Accenture, pioneering customer-centered design for the company in their advanced R&D group. He has a Masters in Design from the Institute of Design at IIT, Masters of Engineering Management from Northwestern University and a Bachelor’s of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois. His clients include Microsoft, Yahoo!, Coca-Cola, Industrial Design Society of America, The Hershey Company and HP. See www.satopartners.com for further details.

create Calagator::Event 1250464691 Application Security using OWASP Roll back

description nil EVENT INFORMATION Application security is a moving target, but the Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) is here in Portland to help you write and deploy applications securely. Speakers James Bohem and Tim Morgan will walk you through all of the free resources made available by OWASP to developers, application architects, and information security professionals. As an example of how OWASP can help, we'll present some of the finer points of secure web session management, covering the variety of attacks on SSL-protected web traffic if sites are not configured properly. We'll touch on cookies, state management, SSL and some common problems and solutions. Q&A will follow. Pizza and beverages will be served. SPEAKER INFORMATION James Bohem manages the security program at WebMD Health Services, which includes a large web-based application with millions of users, as well as other security technologies and risk management for a 400+ person division of WebMD in Portland. James has 15 years in security consulting with a focus on application security, design and technical compliance with a range of regulations and standards. In addition, he has experience developing large distributed applications, microkernels, the UNIX kernel, and international software systems for open systems. Tim Morgan has been taking deep technical dives in security for over a decade as an application security specialist and vulnerability researcher. Tim resides in Oregon and works as VSR where he helps to secure his customers' environments through penetration testing, training and forensic investigations. Tim also develops and maintains several open source digital forensics tools, including Bletchley, an application cryptanalysis toolkit.

description nil Organization: Oregon Wild, 5825 N. Greeley Ave, Portland, OR 97217 Email: [email protected] Find adventure in the perfect shot. The Oregon Wild Outdoor Photo Contest is back for its ninth year and better than ever! Crater Lake and Mount Hood, the Wild Rogue and the John Day, have all helped amateur and professional photographers alike win big. This summer, YOU could get that winning shot by exploring Oregon’s wild places! Oregon Wild, a nonprofit organization founded in 1974 which works to protect and restore Oregon's wildlands, wildlife and waters as an enduring legacy for all Oregonians, is now accepting submissions for the ninth annual Oregon Wild Outdoor Photo Contest! The submission window runs through September 20, 2013 and information on how to submit photographs can be found at http://www.oregonwild.org/photo-contest. The contest is open to amateur and professional photographers of all ages (don’t worry all you novices; amateurs have won more often than the pros!). Submissions will be accepted in four different categories: Wildlands, Wildlife, Waters and Endangered Places. The requirements for this year's categories for the Outdoor Photo Contest are: • Wildlands— Photos must be of federal public lands in Oregon. This includes National Forest and BLM lands (including designated Wilderness and National Scenic areas), National Parks, National Wildlife Refuges, National Grasslands, and National Monuments. Images featuring recreation are acceptable and encouraged. Photos from state and local public lands, or private lands, are not eligible. • Wildlife—photos taken of native Oregon species in their native habitat (including fish) • Waters— Photos must be of pristine, undeveloped waterways in Oregon. This includes rivers, lakes, streams, waterfalls and wetlands. Images featuring recreation are acceptable and encouraged. • Endangered Places— photos taken of Western Oregon’s beautiful Backyard Forests. Photos must be taken somewhere in the 2.6 million acres of western Oregon’s forestlands managed by the Bureau of Land Management. These BLM backyard forests areas are at risk from proposals to privatize management, remove environmental protections for clean water and wildlife, and greatly increase clear-cutting. The forests, streams, rivers, and recreation areas on these lands safeguard our clean water, provide habitat for Oregon salmon and wildlife, and include some of the last remaining old-growth forests in the United States. The photo contest homepage on the Oregon Wild website has additional resources for discovering these unique parts of the state. Contest winners will be announced at an unveiling event, Call of the Wild, on Friday, October 18, 2013 at the Union/Pine. Great prizes will be given away to winning photographers, with prints of the winning photos auctioned off to support the conservation mission of Oregon Wild.
