Quantified Self Show & Tell
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Tracking your mood with your smartphone? Recording your workouts, diet and/or weight? Using a Fitbit, Withings scale, or heart-rate monitor?
Quantified Self is "self-knowledge through numbers" and we want to hear your self-tracking stories! Sign up to give a talk. Our content comes from our community. Show us your graphs, spreadsheets, biometric devices, practical solutions and crazy notions. They are all welcome. We focus on real self-tracking projects involving your personal data.
Or just bring your enthusiasm and come to marvel and learn with us. Sharing is not required if you're just curious to see what this is about!
Agenda:
• 6 to 6:30 pm: Doors open. Social time. This is an opportunity to meet other self-trackers and catch up with friends.
• 6:30 to 7 pm: Group Mind. Do you have a tool that you’re working on, or a self-tracking idea that you want feedback on? The format for Group Mind is 2.5 minutes to talk about your question, project, issue, proposal or challenge and 2.5 minutes to solicit ideas and brainstorming from our members. It is a great way to kick-start or problem-solve your QS issue. You’ll be able to sign up to participate on the day of the event.
• 7 to 8 pm: Scheduled Show & Tell talks. These are 7 minute talks with 5 minutes for questions. This is the meat & potatoes of QS meetups. This is an opportunity to share your story with your peers. Please contact us in advance if you want to give one.
• 8 to 8:30 pm: Walk-on Show & Tell talks. These are 5 minutes with time for a couple questions. They are signed up for on the day of the event, using a sheet at the welcome table. We’ll go through as many as we can, time permitting.
• 8:30 pm onward: The discussion continues over drinks at a pub to-be-named later! This is a good opportunity to talk with presenters or follow-up on an issue that came up in the Group Mind. If you can join us, I very much encourage you to do so. Not only is it good fun, but the conversations are invigorating.
If you're interested in doing a Show & Tell, please mention it in your RSVP or email the organizers in advance. If we hear from you before the meetup, you’ll have a little more time and be guaranteed to talk. You can also sign up on the day of the event as a walk-on.
A note if you plan on presenting: don’t think that this needs to be a TED Talk. We call it Show & Tell for a reason. This is just like first grade. All you have to do is come up, show us something and tell us about it. You can use slides if you want, but it is not required.
One thing that will help with your talk is to structure it around these three questions: What did you do? How did you do it? What did you learn? Remember, sharing is important and valuable even if you share your failures - you never know when someone else will be trying the same thing and you can help them avoid the mistakes that you made! We want to hear your personal stories, and that means really human things like struggling with motivation, experiencing setbacks, and hopefully, every so often, having a flash of insight! Keep it informal. Keep it honest. You're in a safe place.
It helps to watch videos of previous QS talks. This link explains why these three questions make for a good talk.
Finally, thanks to our friends at PuppetLabs for providing the space. And feel free to tweet at the event - #QuantifiedSelf #QSPDX
We can't wait to see you there! |

ACDM President coming to Portland Sept 17 - Topic: 9 Essential DM Practices
Roll back
| description |

The DAMA Portland Chapter is dedicated to delivering thought provoking presentations that will make you more successful in your job. In September weâre lucky enough to have an amazing expert.
Cynthia Hauer, Association for Configuration & Data Management (ACDM) President and DM SME for the NASA Constellation Program will be in Portland presenting "The Data Management Solution, Nine essential elements and the data management processes to support a program lifecycle".
The DAMA DMBOK is a top-level depiction of the nine essential elements of the DM solution, and the context of the environment in which they exist. The successful implementation depends upon fundamental caveats and assumptions.
This presentation discusses how the DAMA DMBOK was used to design DM processes across an extensive program life cycle, and blends the roles and responsibilities of users and their data needs with the framework integration created with information technology and enterprise architecture. The team approach across multiple disciplines and locations that we used both enabled and made the process very challenging. This presentation will identify the challenges, show successes, and reveal lessons learned along the way.
COST: DAMAPDX Individual and Corproate Members Free
Others $15

Come join other Scala fans, whether you're a seasoned oldtimer or complete beginner. We'll have open discussions and a variety of presentations and examples. If you have topics you're interested in hearing more about or something you'd like to give a presentation on, please let us know! Also, feel free to bring code you'd like to show off or get input on from the rest of the group!
As we've been doing for some months now, the first hour of tonight's meeting will be oriented towards people who are new to Scala. If you have questions you'd like to ask about general usage, specific libraries, or overall understanding of the ecosystem, we'll be here to help you find your way. For everyone else, we'll have plenty of extra time tonight for any other discussions and topics, so if you have something you'd like to talk about or code you'd like to show, come prepared! We'll have pizza here at 6, so come early if you're hungry.
We look forward to see you all there! |

Women Who Hack
Roll back
| description |

→ |
This will be a casual get together for women who want to hack on projects with or around other women. All types of projects (software and hardware), languages, platforms and experience levels are welcome.
Don't have anything to work on? Come, and we'll help you find a project!
What you should bring:
* Your laptop or other equipment
* Your lovely self!
We'll provide:
* the space, including lots of seating and tables
* internet
* some snacks, including gluten-free and vegan options.
Our goal is to support local women hackers (and aspiring hackers) by providing a safe, welcoming environment in which you can connect with and learn from each other.
We're kid-friendly, too, so feel free to bring your children with you.
Women Who Hack is open to all self-identified women and genderqueer persons, as well as accompanied children of all genders.
All participants of Women Who Hack agree to follow the <a href="http://citizencodeofconduct.org/">Citizen Code of Conduct</a>.
Questions? Get in touch: [email protected].
Our Google Group is <a href="https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/women-who-hack">https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/women-who-hack</a>. |

SBIR Phase 1 Proposal: Determining Which Agency to Submit to
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program is a highly competitive federal funded Research and Development (R&D) program that is a vehicle for small business to commercialize innovative cutting edge technology, processes, and/or methodologies within a myriad of categories and concentrations. However, the questions become where does my research fit; what are the factors that determine the category for the research submission; can I submit the proposal in more than one category or more than one agency?
More often small business and research professionals struggle with where their idea, concept, and/or product are best suited when deciding to submit an SBIR Phase I proposal. If a proposal is not placed in the correct agency, including the correct category the proposal will be rejected.
This must-attend Webinar focuses on assisting Principal Investigators (PI’s), Research Professors and other Research Professionals on determining where to submit their SBIR Phase I Proposal. Your expert presenter will examine the SBIR Phase I Programs at the National Institute of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Department of Defense (DoD) in order to obtain an understanding of the types of research is being funded and the intricacies of the various agencies and categories in order to assist the participants in aligning their research properly. |

The new [PDX Git Together](https://twitter.com/pdxgit) is fast-forwarding into the future!

There is usually an informal "drinkup" after the meeting at Baileys Tap Room downstairs. If you are headed to the meeting late, we may have migrated there.

PDXNode presentation night
Roll back
| description |
Monthly presentation night! Talks to be announced soon.
We'll also be starting a couple of monthly segments and would LOVE your participation and submissions--
1. "Stump the Chump", a 15-minute round of anything-goes, ask any question that's been irking you about Node.js. Those williing can stand up to help answer the question in an open, friendly learning environment.
2. "Modules You Should Know", a different module featured each month. We'd love for people to take a stab at this lightning-style talk. Learn a module, share it with us, help close that discovery gap that is growing in Node.js!
It will be a nice variety of topics and level of talks. If anyone is interested, we could also take discussions to post-talk drinks nearby. Maybe even hack a little. |

* Justin Abrahms will talk about Selenium PageObjects, a pattern that represents the screens of your web app as a series of objects
We'll also be starting a couple of monthly segments and would LOVE your participation and submissions--
