<h2>Let's use our skills to make our community a better place for women and girls!</h2>
Are you a woman interested in brainstorming and creating solutions for a nonprofit? Well, we have the event for you! We're bringing in nonprofits who are focused on women and girls (or issues that women and girls encounter) who have something that they've been struggling with...and our goal is to have a viable solution for each of them by the end of the weekend!
<h3>Do I have the skills to attend?</h3>
<ul>
<li>Are you a women who is 15 years of age or older?</li>
<li>Are you a programmer?</li>
<li>Are you an interface designer?</li>
<li>Are you a manager?</li>
<li>Are you a teacher (either officially or not)?</li>
<li>Do you have experience with psychology?</li>
<li>Are you an artist?</li>
<li>Are you passionate about helping non-profits?</li>
</ul>
If you answered yes to any of those, then yes! You should. We are looking to have teams of women with diverse backgrounds. If you are under 15, let us know and we will see if we can work something out.
<h3>Why should I attend?</h3>
<ul>
<li>Altruism. Community-Mindedness. You'd like to help the local community with your skills. </li>
<li>Learn from your group members. You'll be on a diverse team of women. We are sure that you'll learn a lot from each other!</li>

You will be in a group of women working on a project for a local nonprofit. The projects are listed below under the Nonprofits section.
Each project will have a tech component, but we're looking to create a team with diverse skills to address the needs of the nonprofit.
Each group will have a ChickTech or Thetus volunteer to help out.
Each group will have a representative from the nonprofit to answer any questions.
At the end of the weekend, we want to have a viable solution for the non-profit.

YES! We are looking for supportive techie guys to help provide childcare for the event in order to break yet another stereotype. We are hoping to have some fun, hands-on activities for the kids too, depending on ages and age ranges.
<h3>Can I attend for free? </h3>
YES! We are offering a sliding scale because we do not want cost to be a barrier for anyone to attend.
If you can afford any of the cost options, please help us out! This will help us cover the costs of this event. Any extra money goes to funding our K-12 programs to ensure that they remain free for participants.

Skills needed (including but not limited to): experience with nonprofits, organizational skills, management, software/website development
<h4>Girl Scouts</h4>
Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington serves members throughout Oregon, and Clark and Skamania Counties in Washington; they currently serve 24,000 girl and adult members.
Problem: Need help creating a training strategy that works for the adult volunteers in the organization, especially with regards to online and blended methods.
Skills needed (including but not limited to): education, pyschology, web service development, training experience, evaluation experience, web design
<h4>Betties360</h4>
Betties360's mission is to inspire confidence, well-being, and community in girls through action sports, outdoor adventure, and life-skill education.
Problem: Need help with publicity and fundraising...in general getting the word out to more people! Possibly a creative marketing campaign?
Skills needed (including but not limited to): nonprofit fundraising, marketing, social media experience, branding experience, designers, artists
<h4>Snowdrift.coop</h4>
Snowdrift.coop is an in-progress web platform aiming to provide on-going community engagement and fundraising for all manner of creative projects (software, music/art, research, educational resources, and more) where results are released freely with no proprietary restrictions on access, modification, or sharing.
Problem: We need help introducing the Snowdrift.coop system to creative projects and to patrons; maybe an infographic or a game?
Skills needed (including but not limited to): nonprofit fundraising, marketing, designer, game development, user experience designer
<h4>Lilka, Inc</h4>
[Note: Lilka is not a nonprofit, but their mission is to help nonprofits work together better, which we think is worth supporting! Plus, it's a women-founded tech startup, which is awesome.]
Lilka, Inc is creating a project coordination tool for nonprofit organizations to help them coordinate both internal projects and projects between nonprofits who want to work together.
Problem: We're at the stage where we're fleshing out our ideas, and we would love some help integrating the functionality of Asana and Google Docs/Drive as a first step. This tool will be used to coordinate NPOs in both everyday situations and emergencies where cooperation between NPOs will save lives.
Skills needed (including but not limited to): Front end web design, user interface design, business, project management, back-end programming, nonprofit experience, graphic design

B Media Community Workshops: Ripping, Remix & Reel Revolution

B Media is hosting a series of low-cost remix workshops open to the public in conjunction with the OROR Fest from September 27-29th. B Media is a community-based video art collective that uses political remix videos, documentary films, and skill-shares to catalyze collaborative work for social justice.
About the workshops:
Topics include how to search through and download archival footage, DIY filming tips and tricks, and advanced editing for remix videos.
Participation in the workshops will be sliding scale for single workshop or full weekend passes, with current or new B Media sustainers participating for free.
Cost: $10-25 sliding scale/workshop. $25-$75 for the whole weekend. Opening and Closing events are FREE. The workshops will be capped at 10 people, with room for 5 walk ups.

Tips and tricks for film making on the go, from a gear check list to DIY light set ups, knowing your rights, and quick ways to get the word out using social media.
3 pm- 5 pm: Surfing the Archive
Found footage is a fundamental part of a great remix. Discover the basics of remix video, the best online archives, and how to download and convert footage from the internet for your film.
Sunday, August 29th
11 am- 1 pm: Idea to Action: Writing a Story Synopsis
Learn how to visualize and articulate a great idea into a three-minute film. Come with an idea you keep having, and weâll collaborate on molding it to reach the next phase.
3 pm -5 pm: Remix/Mixer
Designed for people familiar with Final Cut or an editing program, weâll explore some of the key tricks for making your film look hot, from syncing with music, adding effects, and splicing.Note: Computer with editing software required (six provided for use--note if you need to use one on registration)
8-11 pm: Closing Night, âFilm/Fact/Fiction.â Outdoor film screening of shorts and strange films, chosen from different genres of activist filmmaking. Edify yourself with short documentaries, on the ground reporting, participatory YouTubing, avante garde cinema, and surrealist films. FREE

B Media is a community-based video art collective that uses political remix videos, documentary films, and skill-shares to catalyze collaborative work for social justice.
About the workshops:
Topics include how to search through and download archival footage, DIY filming tips and tricks, and advanced editing for remix videos.
Participation in the workshops will be sliding scale for single workshop or full weekend passes, with current or new B Media sustainers participating for free.
Cost: $10-25 sliding scale/workshop. $25-$75 for the whole weekend. Opening and Closing events are FREE. The workshops will be capped at 10 people, with room for 5 walk ups.

6 pm: Meet and Greet for local film makers and activists. Potluck.
7 pm: Opening Night, “Art + Activism:” A participatory discussion about the transversal connecting art and activism. What is the purpose of film? Can it actually change society? Does the process matter as much as the final product? This introduction to different artist collectives, critical theory, and short films explores the role of film in movements for social justice.
Saturday, August 28
11 am-1 pm: How to Be a Video Ninja
Tips and tricks for film making on the go, from a gear check list to DIY light set ups, knowing your rights, and quick ways to get the word out using social media.
3 pm- 5 pm: Surfing the Archive
Found footage is a fundamental part of a great remix. Discover the basics of remix video, the best online archives, and how to download and convert footage from the internet for your film.
Sunday, August 29th
11 am- 1 pm: Idea to Action: Writing a Story Synopsis
Learn how to visualize and articulate a great idea into a three-minute film. Come with an idea you keep having, and we’ll collaborate on molding it to reach the next phase.
3 pm -5 pm: Remix/Mixer
Designed for people familiar with Final Cut or an editing program, we’ll explore some of the key tricks for making your film look hot, from syncing with music, adding effects, and splicing.Note: Computer with editing software required (six provided for use--note if you need to use one on registration)
8-11 pm: Closing Night, “Film/Fact/Fiction.” Outdoor film screening of shorts and strange films, chosen from different genres of activist filmmaking. Edify yourself with short documentaries, on the ground reporting, participatory YouTubing, avante garde cinema, and surrealist films. FREE

This Nerd Nite will feature just one speaker, the unforgettable Scott Burns!
One of the greatest sets of geological events to ever have occurred in North America was the Missoula Floods. Occurring as many as 40 times during the last ice age, the floods were caused by waters released from ancient Lake Missoula that scoured the Columbia River basin, carved out the Columbia River Gorge, and swept across at least 16,000 square miles of the Pacific Northwest. At this Nerd Nite, Scott Burns, PhD, http://geology.pdx.edu/node/67, professor of geology and past chair of the Department of Geology at PSU, will focus on the incredible story of discovery and development of the idea of the floods by J Harlen Bretz and will discuss the effect of the floods on the landscape of the Willamette Valley and the area around us.

This Nerd Nite will feature the following two talks:
Swinging Between Genomics, Evolution, and Conservation
The small apes (or gibbons) are amazing primates living in South East Asia and currently threatened by extinction. They have many distinctive traits separating them from their cousins, the great apes (orang, gorilla and chimp), including the ability to move just using their arms (i.e. brachiation), monogamy, and vocalization to defend their territory.
Lucia Carbone, PhD, Assistant Professor at OHSU studying genomics and epigenetics, has been studying the gibbon genome to learn more about these species and primate evolution in general. Her talk will go over her latest findings and highlight a fascinating connection between processes in evolution and human disease.
Spider Venoms: The Evolution of an Arsenal
Spiders (all 44,000 species) play key roles in our ecosystems as predators of insects. Without spiders there would be many more insects and fewer plants. Evolution over the last 400 million years has created enormous diversity among spiders in predatory tactics, including web and venom use, which has resulted in a phenomenal diversity of silk and venom chemistry.
Greta Binford, PhD, Associate Professor of Biology at Lewis & Clark College, studies diversity and evolution of spiders and their venoms, including the toxic brown recluse and its relatives. She will highlight some of the beautiful biological diversity of spiders’ feeding biology, silks, and venoms, and discuss how evolution has generated a "pharmacopeia" of unique toxins that are rich in potential for human applications.

One of the most effective ways to test complex language implementations, file systems, and other critical systems software is random test generation. This talk will cover a number of recent results that show how---despite the importance of hand-tooled random test generators for complex testing targets--- there are methods that can be easily applied in almost any setting to greatly improve the effectiveness of random testing. Surprisingly, giving up on potentially finding any bug with every test makes it possible to find more bugs over all. The practical problem of finding distinct bugs in a large set of randomly generated tests, where the frequency of some bugs may be orders of magnitude higher than other bugs, is also open to non ad-hoc methods.

60+ seats with gigabit connections. 2 hosted game servers. Some games will be available for demo while at the LAN for those considering owning the full game later.

<b>Waterfall to Agile: Flipping the Switch</b><br>

<b>Abstract:</b>
Agile software development methodology is transitioning from a fad to a practice. More and more software development practitioners are contemplating to switch from Waterfall to Agile if not entirely at least partially. Terms like scrum, sprint, stand up, story points, and velocity are becoming the ‘Lingua Franca’. While enough light has been shed on the mechanics of creating a release and iteration plan, managing story development, and sprint retrospectives, the team dynamics and behavior for success has not been given the mindshare it deserves.
Although the rules of the game when moving from waterfall to agile development change substantially, the players and their goals do not. The player that, “product manager” now becomes “product owner” and need to very actively pursue customer interest as a customer surrogate. Test engineers who took pride in breaking the code are now urged to work side by side with the developers and ensure that the defects are resolved immediately for a successful completion of a sprint. The project managers who are supposed to drive the schedule take on a role of facilitators making every effort to see that the sprint is complete and the velocity is adequate. Requirements that are frozen rarely gel and the designs go through multiple refactoring cycles to make sure that the development progresses. The new product quality champions who were always looking for “the knee in the defect trends” now barely have any fluctuations in the defect find trends from sprint to sprint. Referring the game, there is a new character in the theatre, “scrum master”, who manages the delivery of the stories.
Can this change be achieved by simply creating a backlog, a release plan, and a sequence of iterations? No. It takes changes in people’s perspectives, the way they think, and the way they achieve their goals. Would a Type A “product owner” who is used to take a product to the market with all the bells and whistles be comfortable to do so with less than the planned functionality? Would a star developer forget about gold plating and would a test engineer who always took pride in finding errors in someone else’s work be able to stand by developers and work with them. Most of all, would the orchestra be able to perform without the precisely written music, the “requirements document”? This paper analyzes the transition of a waterfall team to an agile environment and how changing the perspectives of the players can make the transition a success when the switch from Agile to Waterfall is flipped.
<b>Bio: </b>
Bhushan Gupta has a M.S. in Computer Science from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, Socorro, NM. Bhushan has 27 years of experience in software engineering, 17 of which have been in the software industry. Currently a senior member of the GSS QA team at Nike, Bhushan is deeply involved with the agile development. Prior to joining Nike, Bhushan worked at Hewlett-Packard for 13 years in various capacities and led his groups in product development lifecycles, development methodology and execution processes, and software metrics for quality and software productivity. Bhushan has published and presented numerous articles in various conferences and has participated in panel discussions.

Hey ladies! Epicodus is offering an almost-free one-day workshop on Saturday, September 7, from 10am - 1pm for women who want to learn web programming.
This event is open to women, girls, and queer/trans folks who feel like this is the right space for you. At minimum, you should be comfortable using computers, but no coding experience is necessary. At most, you may have done some HTML and/or CSS, but aren't a professional developer.
We'll cover the basics of how the web works, what part languages and frameworks and other buzzwords play, and then we'll dive into writing some code! By the end, you'll have a good sense of how to continue learning web programming.
I'm asking you pay an $8 registration fee, mainly to make sure that you don't register and not come, but also to cover me buying you breakfast and coffee! If you can't afford to pay, just drop me a line letting me know your situation and promising me that you won't bail.
Space is limited to 24 participants. You don't need to bring a computer, but you do need to bring headphones (you'll go through some video tutorials).
