create Calagator::Event 1250464766 Squawkathon Roll back

description nil Calling all designers, programmers and eco-warriors: endangered seabirds need your help. THE PROBLEM Seabird bycatch is when birds are unintentionally captured and killed in fishing activities. For example, in longline fishing, birds take the bait meant for fish, are hooked, and drown. Bycatch is always bad, but for endangered species with already vulnerable populations, it’s devastating. But there is hope. Better data collection could lead to better longterm management and protection protocols. We need to find an ingenious way to track this bycatch. And we think you can help. Somewhere, there’s a feathered friend who will thank you for it. WHY ME? If you have an industrial design, UX design, programming, data science or project management background and care deeply about beautiful flying squawky things, you’re an essential addition. Plus you’ll be surrounded by lots of other smart, dedicated eco-warriors. It’ll be a lot of fun. WAIT, HOLD ON... WHAT’S A HACKATHON? A hackathon is an event where creative and tech-savvy people collaborate to build solutions for hard-to-solve problems. The event is being hosted by Context Partners and sponsored by The David and Lucile Packard Foundation. RSVP and get more info including FAQ and wiki at http://www.squawkathon.org

create Calagator::Event 1250464765 PDX Big Data Discussion Group Roll back

description nil "No talks. You may opt to take up to 60 seconds to complain about Big Data. One paper per month, no obligation to read it." We'll start by letting anyone who wants to take up to a minute to tell us what they've been doing with data lately. This month's paper is [Large-Scale Matrix Factorization with Distributed Stochastic Gradient Descent](http://www.mpi-inf.mpg.de/~rgemulla/publications/gemulla11dsgd.pdf) by Gemulla, Haas, Nijkamp and Sismanis. Read it or don't - the goal is just to have something to start conversations. "Did you read the paper?" will do nicely. Mention @PDXBigData on Twitter with the link to the full paper to suggest papers for future sessions.

create Calagator::Event 1250464763 TAO QA Webinar: Crowd Source Testing Roll back

description nil Crowdsourcing has become widely acknowledged as a productivity solution across numerous industries. However, for companies incorporating crowdsourcing into existing business practices, specific issues must be addressed: What problem are we trying to solve? How do we control the process? How do we incentivize people to achieve our goals? Ultimately, the key to successfully employing a crowdsourcing model is to move beyond the realm of the "mob" to create an engaged, interactive community of diverse and skilled professionals. In the world of quality assurance, crowdsourcing has the potential to effectively solve emerging challenges and take your testing to new heights. Using real-world examples, uTest's John Montgomery explains how you can leverage the crowd to complement your internal systems, ensure systems work as intended under real-world conditions and effectively manage the scalability of efforts.

create Calagator::Event 1250464762 Mobile Portland: Hype, Hyperbole and the Hope of the Internet of Things Roll back

description nil The Internet of Things is a great tag open to a multitude of expansions. Early Internet architects envisioned small numbers of nodes. The IPV4 address space is on the order of the population of the earth. Internet visionaries like Deborah Estrin and many others foresaw a use case for sensors and new things beyond toasters to connect to the Internet, resulting in IPV6 with 2**95, or about 30 octillion Internet-connected things per person. Tonight's speaker, Surj Patel, is uniquely situated to give you a view of the Internet of Things. Patel studied at MIT's media lab and mediated discussions of Internet futures at Gigaom. Now he is CEO of an Internet of Things startup. Patel also created and helms the Portland Internet of Things meetup, destined to expand internationally. Join us for an evening of networking and enlightenment. It is free. 1417 NE Everett, Portland, OR 97209

update Calagator::Event 1250464510 ChickTech Problem-Storming for Nonprofits Roll back

description
Let's use our skills to make our community a better place for women and girls!
Are you a woman interested in brainstorming and creating solutions for a nonprofit? Well, we have the event for you! We're bringing in nonprofits who are focused on women and girls (or issues that women and girls encounter) who have something that they've been struggling with...and our goal is to have a viable solution for each of them by the end of the weekend!
Do I have the skills to attend?

Are you a women who is 15 years of age or older?

Are you a programmer?

Are you an interface designer?

Are you a manager?

Are you a teacher (either officially or not)?

Do you have experience with psychology?

Are you an artist?

Are you passionate about helping non-profits?

If you answered yes to any of those, then yes! You should. We are looking to have teams of women with diverse backgrounds. If you are under 15, let us know and we will see if we can work something out.
Why should I attend?

Altruism. Community-Mindedness. You'd like to help the local community with your skills.

Learn from your group members. You'll be on a diverse team of women. We are sure that you'll learn a lot from each other!

Learn about the non-profits. Portland has a great nonprofit community and this event will help you get in touch with some of them.

Help fundraise for ChickTech K-12 events. By paying for your participation, you are not only getting this experience (and food for days!), you are also helping to make our K-12 events free for participants. Thank you in advance for your support!

Childcare is provided.

Delicious food is provided. Eat up!

What are we doing, exactly?
You will be in a group of women working on a project for a local nonprofit. The projects are listed below under the Nonprofits section. Each project will have a tech component, but we're looking to create a team with diverse skills to address the needs of the nonprofit. Each group will have a ChickTech or Thetus volunteer to help out. Each group will have a representative from the nonprofit to answer any questions. At the end of the weekend, we want to have a viable solution for the non-profit.
Can men attend?
YES! We are looking for supportive techie guys to help provide childcare for the event in order to break yet another stereotype. We are hoping to have some fun, hands-on activities for the kids too, depending on ages and age ranges.
Can I attend for free?
YES! We are offering a sliding scale because we do not want cost to be a barrier for anyone to attend. If you can afford any of the cost options, please help us out! This will help us cover the costs of this event. Any extra money goes to funding our K-12 programs to ensure that they remain free for participants.
Event Schedule
Friday: 6:30p - 9p, hors d'oeuvres, choose projects, meet teams! Saturday: 9:30a - 5:30p, breakfast, work with teams, lunch, more work! Sunday: 9:30a - 5:30p, breakfast, work, lunch, work, present (not the noun, the verb)!
Help us by spreading the word!
Tweet: "Let's help nonprofits in #pdx! If you have one of any of the skills listed on any of the projects, consider attending this event to help out our nonprofit community.
My Sister's House
My Sister's House is a home for women with children who have suffered domestic violence/and or abuse and need a safe environment to create new lives. Problem: Need complete website and branding overhaul! http://mysistershouse.net/ Skills needed (including but not limited to): website design, website development, user experience, branding, artists
Oregon Tradeswomen
Oregon Tradeswomen, Inc. (OTI) is dedicated to promoting success for women in the trades through education, leadership and mentorship. Problem: Need help with communications throughout the organization! Especially around email, calendars, etc. Skills needed (including but not limited to): experience with nonprofits, organizational skills, management, software/website development
Girl Scouts
Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington serves members throughout Oregon, and Clark and Skamania Counties in Washington; they currently serve 24,000 girl and adult members. Problem: Need help creating a training strategy that works for the adult volunteers in the organization, especially with regards to online and blended methods. Skills needed (including but not limited to): education, pyschology, web service development, training experience, evaluation experience, web design
Betties360
Betties360's mission is to inspire confidence, well-being, and community in girls through action sports, outdoor adventure, and life-skill education. Problem: Need help with publicity and fundraising...in general getting the word out to more people! Possibly a creative marketing campaign? Skills needed (including but not limited to): nonprofit fundraising, marketing, social media experience, branding experience, designers, artists
Snowdrift.coop
Snowdrift.coop is an in-progress web platform aiming to provide on-going community engagement and fundraising for all manner of creative projects (software, music/art, research, educational resources, and more) where results are released freely with no proprietary restrictions on access, modification, or sharing. Problem: We need help introducing the Snowdrift.coop system to creative projects and to patrons; maybe an infographic or a game? Skills needed (including but not limited to): nonprofit fundraising, marketing, designer, game development, user experience designer
Lilka, Inc
[Note: Lilka is not a nonprofit, but their mission is to help nonprofits work together better, which we think is worth supporting! Plus, it's a women-founded tech startup, which is awesome.] Lilka, Inc is creating a project coordination tool for nonprofit organizations to help them coordinate both internal projects and projects between nonprofits who want to work together. Problem: We're at the stage where we're fleshing out our ideas, and we would love some help integrating the functionality of Asana and Trello as a first step. This tool will be used to coordinate NPOs in both everyday situations and emergencies where cooperation between NPOs will save lives. Skills needed (including but not limited to): Front end web design, user interface design, business, project management, back-end programming, nonprofit experience, graphic design If you know of other nonprofits who would like to participate email us at [email protected]. If you would like to get more information on volunteering for this event, also email us at [email protected]. create Calagator::Event 1250464758 Flux Grand Opening Roll back

description nil Our first public opening will be September 27th at 6pm featuring an unconference style series of 10 minute talks covering why a feminist hackerspace is necessary in Portland and related topics. Flux — a new hackerspace in Portland — is the work of a small group of artists and hackers. We found ourselves frustrated with the difficulty of finding welcoming, affordable space for hardware workshops in Portland, OR. It’s easy to talk software at a bar-- but you can’t very well solder arduino boards over brewskies! Also, as members of “traditionally underrepresented populations,” we found that existing meetups and maker spaces just didn’t represent us or cater to our needs. Where are the women, the people of color, the queer folk, the blue collar workers? Where are our trusted allies? The technology world is often a binder full of testosterone. We’re tired of the exclusivity that pervades tech culture in this town-- so we’re taking action! Flux aims to create a new culture of artists, makers, benders and breakers in Portland, OR. Our workshop is filled with people and tools to help members navigate the technical and emotional hurdles of finishing their dream projects. As an all-volunteer group, FLUX prides itself on maintaining an explicitly feminist space. We strive to make technology inclusive for people of all backgrounds and technical abilities. To that end, we welcome makers of all genders, orientations, and ethnic and cultural heritages.

update Calagator::Event 1250464510 ChickTech Problem-Storming for Nonprofits Roll back

description Let's use our skills to make our community a better place for women and girls! Are you a woman interested in brainstorming and creating solutions for a nonprofit? Do you want to talk to nonprofits that are already up, running and fixing the world? Well we have the event for you!! We're bringing in nonprofits who are focused on women and girls (or issues that women and girls encounter) who have something that they've been struggling with...and our goal is to have a viable solution for each of them by the end of the weekend! Although each project will have a tech component, women with expertise in many different areas will be vital to creating a solid and successful solution. Each team will consist of women with a variety of backgrounds. Some of the areas the teams will need expertise in include technology, nonprofits, marketing, business, psychology, education, and design. We'll kick off with heavy hors d'oeuvres Friday evening and everyone will choose their projects and meet their team members. Saturday and Sunday, it's all up to the teams to create something amazing! At 4pm Sunday, we'll hear from each team about their solution, and we'll adjourn at 5:30. A light breakfast, lunch and snacks are provided Saturday and Sunday. We'd love to hear ideas on how to help teams continue working on their projects for the nonprofits! Childcare will be provided on-site. And we would *love* to have some supportive techie guys help out with the childcare in order to break yet another stereotype! We're hoping to have some fun, hands-on activities for the kids too, depending on ages (and age ranges). Please let us know if you have a nonprofit you think would like to be involved and get some free problem-solving, or if you'd like to be a volunteer and help to organize this event. Current Participating Nonprofits: My Sister's House My Sister's House is a home for women with children who have suffered domestic violence/and or abuse and need a safe environment to create new lives. Problem: TBA All people who identify as women are welcome, although we have set a lower limit on age to 15. However, we are open to persuasion...if you are a young woman under 15, feel free to contact us. All fees collected are donations that go to paying for the costs associated with this event. Anything above cost keeps ChickTech K-12 programs free for their participants. ChickTech's fiscal sponsor is TechStart, a registered 501c3. Event Schedule Friday: 6:30p - 9p hors d'oeuvres, choose projects, meet teams! Saturday: 9:30a - 5:30p breakfast, work with teams, lunch, more work!

YES! description nil
PDXTech4Good will be one of many groups across the NetSquared global network holding a social media-themed event during Social Media September. Here’s how it works: Two or three local nonprofits (or, patients) will share how they’re using online marketing and social media/networking to achieve their goals and objectives. Then the surgeons (that’s you!) participate in a facilitated discussion about how each organization might use the social web to even greater effect.

Want to be a patient and receive social media surgery? Fill out this application. We'll get back to you shortly.

Whether you’re a social media expert or an interested citizen, your perspectives and opinions are welcome and valuable.
