Sewing with Electronics workshop - make a light up Halloween decoration
Roll back
| description |
Create a spooky light-up fabric decoration for your wall or door! In this workshop we'll use Aniomagic's Sparkle platform to sew LED Halloween decorations that respond to ambient light levels.
Sparkle is one of a growing number of eTextile platforms meant for creating projects that integrate electronics with fabrics or paper. Sparkle can be programmed for interactive response without writing any code, and no soldering is needed as all of the components can be sewn together with special electrically conductive thread.
The cost for this workshop is $50. All materials are provided, including an Aniomagic Sparkle sensor kit with an approximate retail value of $40. No electronic experience needed, some experience with hand sewing is recommended. Register at <a href="http://etextilehalloween.eventbrite.com">etextilehalloween.eventbrite.com</a>
<b>About the instructors:</b>
Shannon Henry loves to make things that blend the science & tech world with art and crafts. She has been crafting with fabric since she could handle safety scissors, and began integrating electronics into her art in 2008. Her eTextile work has been shown in San Francisco, New York, and Vancouver BC. She also develops sewn electronics kits and tutorials, which you can find at her website, <a href="http://polymathdesignlab.com">Polymathdesignlab.com</a>.
Cat Poole is a one woman instigator of perception bending mayhem. Through "Discovering Empowerment Through Creativity" workshops and Upcycled Electronics, she encourages all to defy their programming and void all warranties. Find out more at her site, <a href="http://cacophonouscreations.com">Cacophonouscreations.com</a>.

ADX Fabrication Fest Opening Reception
Roll back
| description |
ADX, a new membership-based community workshop, will host its inaugural Fabrication Fest on Friday, September 16 - Sunday, September 18, 2011. From the design expert to the novice craftsperson, there's something for everyone in this exciting local version of the "maker faire."
The weekend includes a dynamic exhibit featuring the work of ADX members of all experience levels and backgrounds who have brought their project concepts to life via the wide array of tools and resources within our facility. This diverse collection includes a giant boat, furniture, signage, craft projects, utilitarian items, musical instruments, and more!
Join us for the opening reception from 6-11pm on Friday, September 16. Finished projects will be on display all night long during this free, all-ages public event â with beer provided by Widmer Brewery , sweet treats from Miss Zumstein, and curbside food cart service by Domo Dogs, Fifty Licks, and Hungry Heart Cupcakes.
On Saturday, September 17 from 10am-4pm, ADX will offer an open house full of demonstrations, workshops, and creative energy. Our community partners will be offering up demos and special deals. Or, for the more industrious, our popular class "Women Welding: Bringing Metal to Life" will take place in the metal shop from 10a-2p (sign up here!).
Saturday evening plays host to Fabrication Feast from 6:30-10pm. A collaboration with the Special Snowflake Supper Club, this one-in-a-lifetime dining experience will play host to a delicious meal in the style of a modern-day community barn raising. Weâre talking entirely handmade: all tables, place settings, and seating has been constructed by ADX members. Click here to make your reservation!

This workshop will be lite on lecture and heavy on putting the thing together so be prepared to solder.
What:
This is a an opportunity for 13 people to build their own TAD , A complete microprocessor based development environment which is very popular with artists and other creative people. Suspect Devices has put together a kit which takes the surface mount out of the arduino. This seminar is to walk you through putting yours together and programming it
Where:
ADX -- SE 11th between Oak and Stark
When:
Sunday October 30, 2011 from 1 to 5pm
You Bring:
- A laptop
- A soldering iron (20-30W Pencil type)
- A standard (not mini) usb cable (A->B)
- A pair of dikes (wire cutters/nippers)
You will get:
* An Arduino that you built yourself.
* A very brief introduction to the Arduino
* Help when you need it
* To know that what you built worked at least once
How do I RSVP?
The workshop costs $40 including all kit parts (plus $5 room use fee for ADX).
Via paypal -- Select the session on the TDI Products page:

Dorkbot Workshop -- PCB Layout Using EAGLE
Roll back
| description |
Cost: FREE
No RSVP required. Just drop in.
Description: We all love circuits with blinky lights that make strange noises, but imagine how much cooler your circuits would look on a custom-designed and manufactured circuit board. It's easier than it may seem, and we're going to show you how it's down. Using the free version of EAGLE PCB you can design your own circuit boards in a format that is then easy to have fabricated.
This is an introductory course on using EAGLE to design printed circuit boards for fabrication. It's aimed at beginners that may have breadboarded some electronics, and now want to make a final circuit board. We'll design a simple circuit, draw out the schematic, and lay out a board.
Bring a computer: Mac, Linux, or Windows. Please download and install Eagle beforehand from http://www.cadsoftusa.com/downloads/
Laen, the ever dedicated Dorkbotter behind the DorkbotPDX group PCB order, will be showing you all of the necessary ins and outs so that you, too, can make your very own printed circuit boards. |

Dorkbot Workshop -- e-Textiles
Roll back
| description |
Cost: $25
Please bring:
- Scissors
- A bag or garment to modify â please choose something made of a non-stretch fabric.
Dreaming of bike gloves that light up to keep you visible at night, or an awesome illuminated costume? Or maybe youâd like to add a bit of extra sparkle to your living room with a glowing throw pillow⦠Whatever project you have in mind, if youâre curious about the process of integrating electronics into fabric, this workshop is a great place to start.
Shannon Henry and Cat Poole will start by touching on some of the interesting things being developed with eTextile methods and useful resources, then weâll spend some hands on time laying out a basic LED circuit and sewing it on to fabric using conductive thread. Youâll learn how to convert standard LEDs (and other electronic components) into sew-able ones, and how to use standard textile fastenings like zippers and snaps to switch your project on and off, plus lots of tips on how to make your project easier and make sure it lasts.
No prior electronics or sewing experience required. Conductive thread and electronic components will be provided.
Register for the workshop here: http://pdxetextile.eventbrite.com/
About the instructors:
Shannon Henry loves to make things that blend the science & tech world with art and crafts. She has been crafting with fabric since she could handle safety scissors, and began integrating electronics into her art in 2008. Her eTextile work has been shown in San Francisco, New York, and Vancouver BC. She also develops sewn electronics kits and tutorials, which you can find at her website, Polymathdesignlab.com.
Cat Poole is a one woman instigator of perception bending mayhem. Through âDiscovering Empowerment Through Creativityâ workshops and Upcycled Electronics, she encourages all to defy their programming and void all warranties. Find out more at her site, Cacophonouscreations.com. |

Dive in to the back end with Python and Django, Ruby on Rails or others
Develop desktop programs in C#, Python, C and many other languages.
Whatever language or technology you want to learn we can help!
Our event is beginner friendly, we can help get you started with programing, support your online learning, or just talk about where you are at and what comes next.
Bring your laptop, and something you want to learn, try, or build. |

Roll back

Michael Dexter will talk about the new PC-BSD 10 releases and he and David Mandel will host an open discussion of the PLUG year in review and plans for 2014.
PC-BSD is a desktop-oriented distribution of FreeBSD includes a few more things than the average open source OS distribution:
* Desktop Agnosticism (Includes KDE, Gnome, MATE, and many more)
* OEM Installs (Set up an account on first boot)
* A server option without GUI tools
* Integrated Virtualization
* ZFS Storage with visual management
* Built-in PXE netboot environment
* "kickstart" style system installation scripting
* Integrated Package creation tools
* FreeNAS backup integration
* Many more things that make Michael giddy
Michael has used BSD since 1991 and works for the ScaleEngine global content delivery network.
Many attendees will break for a social hour at the Lucky Lab Brew Pub NW at 1945 NW Quimby
