PDXCloud met for the first time in November 2012, and now it's time to celebrate our one year anniversary!
This Wednesday we will have a panel of guests talking around the theme, "Why We Chose Cloud, and What We've Learned". We have a group of panelists (many thanks to those that have agreed to sit on the panel so far), and we still have room for a few more if anyone is interested. If you have any inclination to answer questions about your company's use of cloud technologies and the factors and decisions that went into selecting those technologies, please send me an email ([email protected]). No presentations will be required, this will mainly be a Q&A session.
For the rest of you, bring plenty of questions for our panelists!
As usual, we'll have pizza, beer, and other refreshments, and additionally, we'll have a birthday cake to celebrate PDXCloud's 1 year anniversary!

When reviewed in conjunction with research, failures provide a unique perspective on design for manufacturability and reliability. This presentation will provide valuable lessons learned from practical experience through discussion of material selection, current electronics research and failure analysis case studies. Design considerations for advanced assembly processes and analytical techniques for materials characterization will also be covered. In addition, a review of lead-free laminate selection and testing procedures will shed some light on the question, âCan your board withstand 9x reflow?â
Members of the SMTA Portland Chapter are encouraged to bring specific questions or examples of surface mount process difficulties to be shared in an open discussion at the end of the presentation.

Denis is the Associate Director of the Universal Instrumentsâ Advanced Process Laboratory. He started his career in the electronics manufacturing world after earning his Doctorate in Chemistry from Binghamton University. His current focus is identifying the critical needs in emerging technologies and electronics assembly processes in order to develop specific research and development projects. Denis has authored hundredâs of peer reviewed articles, several books and presented to thousands of his peers on the results of his research over the past 14 years.
Denis has travelled the electronics manufacturing world visiting over 30 countries providing guidance and solutions to people and companies designing and manufacturing devices such as cell phones and computers to pacemakers and aerospace devices. These companies look to implement cost effective, reliable and robust processes that deliver the specified functionality and reliability.
Denis volunteers his time serving on the board of the Surface Mount Technology Association. For the past 7 years, his focus has been on implementing new programs that deliver leading edge technology solutions for the user.

Board the bus for a ride through Portlandâs technology industry, including some of the major institutions our city is known for, as well as some of our emerging start ups. Get a behind-the-scenes view of leading tech innovators, and meet some of the leaders who are shaping Portlandâs tech futureâ¦youâd be crazy to miss it!
Weâll start out at Portland Incubator Experiment, a start-up incubator for new, emerging tech businesses. Associated with and housed in the Widen+Kennedy building, the space canopies 8-10 start-ups at a time, helping with the early stages of creating business. Weâll hear about how theyâve created more than $1 million in venture capital and more than 400 jobs, and meet with several of the business owners.
At Second Story weâll get a look at their innovation center for new interactive experiences. Staff will share their work in pushing the boundaries of storytelling across digital channels â including web, mobile and installations. Weâll hear a bit about their history and some of the new groundbreaking projects currently in development.
Nike+ Accelerator will provide us with a similar but different view into the world of emerging start-ups. Started just months ago, 10 teams are working with mentors to develop a variety of businesses, many around health, wellness and technology. The program is run by TechStars, a Colorado-based company that has generated more than $275 million in venture capital for clients over the last six years.
The tour ends at Free Geek, a nonprofit whose mission is to recycle technology and provide access to computers, the Internet, education, and job skills in exchange for community service. Founded in 2000, the center refurbishes more than 44,000 computers, printers and monitors a year, while recycling 601 tons of materials. Weâll take a quick tour of their thrift store, as well as learn about their hardware grants program, classes and volunteer opportunities. |

In early 2012, Nike introduced FuelBand and Google announced its Glass Project â two events that shined a spotlight on the growing category of Wearable Technology. In the months since, the global design and business community has exploded with speculation on the potential of embedded computing. But theyâve left many questions unanswered: How will wearable technology fit into our daily lives? Is it a passing trend, or the future of computing? Will these kinds of devices bring people closer together, or add to the distractions that battle for our attention?
Whatâs clear is that computers will radically transform over the next five years, from devices we carry to integrated parts of our outfits and bodies, that we use almost without thinking. Itâs a shift that will transform markets, and challenge our definition of beauty. <p>Because Intel is a hardware company, people often miss the things Intel does on the software side and in particular open source software. Intel is one of the largest contributors to Linux. And it taking up a similar role when it comes to Android.</p>
<p>Not only have Intel worked with handset manufacturers to ship phones running on Intel metal and more recently beginning to manufacturer ARM chips as well, but they've been contributors to Android's open source software. They have a ton of tools that developers can use.</p>
<p>We're pleased and lucky to have Daniel Holmlund, an engineer working for Intel's Android developer relations, here in Portland to give us an overview of Android development and projects to which Intel contributes. They'll talk what developers need to be aware of when moving an application to an Intel Android devices, and the software tools that Intel creates to analyze and optimize Android applications.</p>
<p>In addition, Intel will be giving away t-shirts and you can <strong>enter a raffle to win a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3</strong>. You must be present to win.</p>

<p><span>Is your donor data managed by a handful of systems that perform well for data entry tasks but that are inadequate for deep analysis especially over the long term? Or are you adept at querying your donor and gift management systems, but is doing so a laborious and time consuming task? Do you have multiple versions of the truth, and do they all compete for the attention of fundraisers and decision makers?</span> <br></p>
<p>Do any of these scenarios sound familiar? Do you lack the ability to query and explore your fundraising data in an efficient, authoritative, and insightful manner?</p>
<p>Using the tools and techniques of business intelligence, you can gain actionable insight about your donors and make your fundraising efforts more effective. Are you a woman interested in brainstorming and creating solutions for a nonprofit? Well, we have the event for you! We're bringing in nonprofits who are focused on women and girls (or issues that women and girls encounter) who have something that they've been struggling with...and our goal is to have a viable solution for each of them by the end of the weekend!
<h3>Do I have the skills to attend?</h3>
<ul>
<li>Are you a women who is 15 years of age or older?</li>
<li>Are you a programmer?</li>
<li>Are you an interface designer?</li>
<li>Are you a manager?</li>
<li>Are you a teacher (either officially or not)?</li>
<li>Do you have experience with psychology?</li>
<li>Are you an artist?</li>
<li>Are you passionate about helping non-profits?</li>
</ul>
If you answered yes to any of those, then yes! You should. We are looking to have teams of women with diverse backgrounds. If you are under 15, let us know and we will see if we can work something out.
<h3>Why should I attend?</h3>
<ul>
<li>Altruism. Community-Mindedness. You'd like to help the local community with your skills. </li>
<li>Learn from your group members. You'll be on a diverse team of women. We are sure that you'll learn a lot from each other!</li>

Each project will have a tech component, but we're looking to create a team with diverse skills to address the needs of the nonprofit.
Each group will have a ChickTech or Thetus volunteer to help out.
Each group will have a representative from the nonprofit to answer any questions.
At the end of the weekend, we want to have a viable solution for the non-profit.

YES! We are looking for supportive techie guys to help provide childcare for the event in order to break yet another stereotype. We are hoping to have some fun, hands-on activities for the kids too, depending on ages and age ranges.
<h3>Can I attend for free? </h3>
YES! We are offering a sliding scale because we do not want cost to be a barrier for anyone to attend.
If you can afford any of the cost options, please help us out! This will help us cover the costs of this event. Any extra money goes to funding our K-12 programs to ensure that they remain free for participants.

Problem: We're at the stage where we're fleshing out our ideas, and we would love some help integrating the functionality of Asana and Google Docs/Drive as a first step. This tool will be used to coordinate NPOs in both everyday situations and emergencies where cooperation between NPOs will save lives.
Skills needed (including but not limited to): Front end web design, user interface design, business, project management, back-end programming, nonprofit experience, graphic design

When we have to wait 20 minutes for service after being seated at a restaurant, or when a grocery store is disorganized and the clerk is distracted and unhelpful, then we know that something is wrong with the situation. In the physical world, lack of information and poor interactions are obvious. In the physical world, we know how to make improvements that increase customer satisfaction. How can we translate this understanding to the digital world? What do we need to understand about human nature to improve digital experiences? In this talk, Jeanne Turner will discuss concepts and techniques that allow us to cultivate good will in the digital world.

Civilizing Information Architecture: A meditation on systems design
What is the scope of information architecture practice? To design optimal architectural structures, we know we must empathize with its inhabitants, and apply deep expertise in organization, language and flow. But we've learned, this alone will not ensure a design's success. As we dive deeply into the churning sea of design and technology trends, tools and methods, we often forget how we orient to design practice, and its increasingly complex problems, as thoughtful human beings. Will our apps, widgets and gadgets come to serve us, or will we lose ourselves in a wilderness of unmitigated digital distractions and breakdowns? To civilize our digital future, we are compelled to take a systems view of design practice. We are compelled to shift our perspectives and spark grander dialogues.This session will examine the origins and evolution of the IA role, the current and emerging climate in which our products reside, and put forth a few principles and methods to help answer the call to broaden our vision and expand our influence in a changing world.

Networks as a User Interface
The mathematics of graph theory and its many applications via network science in sociology, bioinformatics, intelligence, and even physics, represent a paradigm shift in how we study and consider information. Over the last 30 years, machines have allowed us to structure data in such a way that allow us to analyze the complex interactions between the individual actors in networks. These interactions turn out to reveal patterns that are both predictable and obedient to mathematical laws- many in the academic community are just beginning to grasp the power an the importance of these claims. The ability to visualize networks allowing the researcher/user/customer to quickly understand the structure and behavior of a network is the main focus of this talk.

In the physical world, lack of information and poor interactions are obvious. In the physical world, we know how to make improvements that increase customer satisfaction. How can we translate this understanding to the digital world? What do we need to understand about human nature to improve digital experiences? In this talk, Jeanne Turner will discuss concepts and techniques that allow us to cultivate good will in the digital world.

Civilizing Information Architecture: A meditation on systems design
What is the scope of information architecture practice? To design optimal architectural structures, we know we must empathize with its inhabitants, and apply deep expertise in organization, language and flow. But we've learned, this alone will not ensure a design's success. As we dive deeply into the churning sea of design and technology trends, tools and methods, we often forget how we orient to design practice, and its increasingly complex problems, as thoughtful human beings. Will our apps, widgets and gadgets come to serve us, or will we lose ourselves in a wilderness of unmitigated digital distractions and breakdowns? To civilize our digital future, we are compelled to take a systems view of design practice. We are compelled to shift our perspectives and spark grander dialogues.This session will examine the origins and evolution of the IA role, the current and emerging climate in which our products reside, and put forth a few principles and methods to help answer the call to broaden our vision and expand our influence in a changing world.

Networks as a User Interface
The mathematics of graph theory and its many applications via network science in sociology, bioinformatics, intelligence, and even physics, represent a paradigm shift in how we study and consider information. Over the last 30 years, machines have allowed us to structure data in such a way that allow us to analyze the complex interactions between the individual actors in networks. These interactions turn out to reveal patterns that are both predictable and obedient to mathematical laws- many in the academic community are just beginning to grasp the power an the importance of these claims. The ability to visualize networks allowing the researcher/user/customer to quickly understand the structure and behavior of a network is the main focus of this talk.

If you haven't already signed up for the Hack tomorrow at PSU, we hope some details included here will entice you. To prepare our participants for a fun and productive day, below are details and resources for the Hack.
Goals: To generate ideas are innovative to solving environmental and sustainability, social equity issues through utilization of software and mobile apps. Donât forget to have some fun.
Idea Generation: To start, you should ask the following questions:
1) What issues you and your team would like to tackle? (ie. carbon emissions reduction by buildings or vehicles, solar potential identifier, change of personal habits, e-waste tracking, etc.)
2) What do other similar applications exist on the market? Sometimes, building on existing apps can resolve a more refined product.
3) What is the marketability? Is it scalable?
The best project ideas are one that you are passionate about, and have some components of competition and linkage to social media.
Finding Data:
While you are brainstorming ideas, you should also consider data availability as well. It is not the end of the world if you donât have data sets or APIs to mock up a prototype. Simply build your own datasets, even if just a few that are enough for you to test out your product.

Judging Criteria:

Credits/points are purchased by users and the revenues help purchase goods and services to help local nonprofits such as food banks, housing groups and economic development (micro loans, etc.)
Platform for Good: A website for the Hackathons for Social Good that allows individuals and teams to contribute to social good projects. The site is a repository for project plans, code, documents and contributor information. Github has agreed to help with the code repository component.
Day On: Day On is an all-volunteer, zero-cash-flow collaboration to connect nonprofit organizations that need advice and assistance with volunteers who are ready to help. Project information will be updated soon.
