update Calagator::Event 1250458154 Portland Python User Group: Geohash, PostGIS, GeoDjango, etc Roll back

description Our first meeting of 2010 is nearly upon us and it's going to be a big one! The theme for January is: Geographic Information. In addition to 3 (count 'em: 3!) great feature presentations, there will be a giveaway of GIS and Python books. And, after, we'll adjourn to the pub for beer. (Map to be provided.) First up we'll have Michel's Module of the Month, a lightning talk on a randomly chosen stdlib module by an unprepared volunteer. Then, Michel Pelletier will introduce Geohash, a clever text encoding of latitude and longitude information that is very useful for non-traditional databases, among other things. Geohashing was cooked up by Gustavo Niemeyer of Mocker and Dateutil fame. Webb Sprague will talk about how to incorporate geographic data into relational databases using PostGIS and PostgreSQL. He will cover making a connection with psycopg2, modeling using geographic data types, and associating geographic data with non-geographic attributes. Building on Webb's talk, Tim Welch will introduce the geographic capabilities of the Django Framework (aka GeoDjango) which utilizes PostGIS and psycopg2. He'll briefly cover geometric data types, spatial operators, the Django geographic admin and creating geo-enabled web services. In addition to examples, at least one application will also be demoed. description Scanning APIs with OAS 2.0 (Swagger): === The Open API Specification is a relative newcomer in the history of web service interface documentation. It stands apart from its predecessors by not tying itself to a specific vendor technology, and aims to embrace all forms of RESTful HTTP. Leveraging this powerful specification for automated scanning of APIs will save time by providing a straightforward mechanism to evaluate APIs without having to proxy traffic or manually build attack vectors. Topics covered

What is the OpenAPI Specification (Swagger)

How Swagger/REST relates to SOAP/XML

Tools for converting to/from swagger to 'X'.

Scanning a simple RESTful JSON based API with Swagger

Swaggering the SDLC.

Speaker === Scott Davis
Rapid7
Application Security Researcher
Portland, Oregon Area
Scott has been developing software professionally for over 15 years in a variety of contexts and technologies including wireless sensor networks, robotics, migration modeling & visualization, ERP, interactive projection art, product development and security services. update Calagator::Event 1250470152 OWASP: Scanning with swagger Roll back

description Scanning with swagger: Using the Open API specification to find first and second order vulnerabilities in RESTful APIs === APIs support the complex web of interconnected things that exist today, yet they have also created significant challenges for security teams. Nearly every interconnected application has an API-based approach. These APIs are inherently vulnerable to most of the same potential vulnerabilities that applications face. As security teams scramble to figure out ways to get their arms around the risks that exists in their organizations’ APIs, these APIs are going completely untested, leaving vulnerabilities undiscovered. Fortunately, several recent innovations, like the Open API Specification (formerly known as Swagger), are enabling effective API security testing at the largest attack surface. But how? Every user interface comes with known and unknown sets of local vulnerabilities because it communicates with local and remote service APIs. Similarly, every API is also potentially vulnerable to local and remote first order vulnerabilities. These can be observed via request and response; for example a crafted series of GET requests performing blind SQL Injection analysis can be considered a first order vulnerability. Additionally, services that support the function of the API, whether during the time of the request, or queued for latter computation, are considered a second order attack; an example of this could be a data collection endpoint that consumes JSON, passes this payload to a Kafka broker, which in turn is consumed by a cluster service in Hadoop or Spark. These payloads queue up into architecture that analyse and augment the data. Injection and serialization vulnerabilities introduced in this manner are considered second order blind vulnerabilities. The Open API Specification is a relative newcomer in the history of web service interface documentation. Join this presentation as Scott demonstrates novel approaches to using the Open API specification (formerly Swagger) to exhaustively scan API’s for first and second order vulnerabilities, and demonstrate the severity of findings left unfixed. Participants will learn:

Why APIs are serious challenges for security experts

How first and second order vulnerabilities can be left hidden in your APIs and micro services

How you can begin to understand, define and test your APIs in a structured manner

The latest techniques in API security testing

Speaker === Scott Davis
Rapid7
Application Security Researcher
Portland, Oregon Area
Scott has been developing software professionally for over 15 years in a variety of contexts and technologies including wireless sensor networks, robotics, migration modeling & visualization, ERP, interactive projection art, product development and security services. description metformin tablet Would you like to animate and program a movie? Construct a robotic pet and direct it to do tricks? Design a video game featuring you and your friends as characters? Join us at Geek Chic where being a computer geek is chic and coding is cool. You will rotate between three classes, taught by women computer scientists, as you learn computer skills while focusing on creative projects. Create an animated film using Alice software, which includes worlds and characters that you can manipulate using programming basics such as loops, lists, and objects. Design and code your own video game using Game Maker. You will learn how to control characters, objects, and outcomes in your game, add more features, and increase the difficulty level. Construct a robotic animal using the Lego Mindstorm system and program it to act like a real pet. Make full use of light sensors, rotation sensors, and touch sensors to make the interaction with the pets as realistic as possible. Out of class activities, both tech and non-tech, will allow you to interact with other campers in games and creative projects. Registration is required and can be completed on our website. Tuition: $399 for the week. Tuition assistance available.
