***Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-how-to-study-for-a-technical-interview-12418-tickets-39530989253] is required to avoid having to manually check-in at the event ***
Interviewing for a new job can be a stressful proposition. It is hard to know what to expect and even how to prepare for it. Each company evaluates its candidates differently. Luckily, some upfront investment and preparation can really go a long way in helping you distinguish yourself from the rest of the candidates. In this seminar lead by Khawaja Shams, VP of Engineering at Elemental Technologies, we will cover some common interviewing practices for technical interviews and what you may be able to do to get ready. We plan to cover many beneficial topics:
• Morning preparation, attire, mindset
• Preparation for the non-technical parts
• How to study for the coding interview
• How to execute the coding test
Due to the level of interaction required, attendance will be capped at 20. Never fear, we will be organizing this same event bi-monthly because we want everyone to have access to this workshop!
Agenda:
5:00 PM: Doors open
5:15 PM: Introduction
5:30 PM: Workshop begins
6:30 PM: Workshop ends
Event FAQ:

Q: Is there secured bike parking?

Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome.

Abstract:
A well known security expert and cryptographer, Thomas H. Ptáček, once said: "<i>If You're Typing the Letters A-E-S Into Your Code You're Doing It Wrong</i>". Wait, what?!? Doesn't everyone use AES? Of course we do. Is AES broken? Nope.
In this developer-oriented talk I'll explore what mistakes developers commonly make when implementing cryptosystems, just how easily these problems can be exploited in the real world, and what Thomas meant by his statement.

| description |

So many of us are building really cool shit at work and in the community - let's share, recognize and applaud our badassery. Through this WTT series, we aim to perpetuate the technical learning and teaching component within our industry.
Partnering with local WIT communities we'll meet monthly for a lightning talk + keynote, followed by Q&A. Oh, and food/drink. Curated for a technical audience compromised of but not limited to women, transgender and non binary friends. We'll start promptly at 5:15 and end by 6:30, we welcome kiddos too.
UX/Design Speaker Lineup!
Lightning Talk, Callie Carroll: DIY Usability Testing for Devs - UX Research for Non Researchers
Callie survived the life of a front-end web developer during the (original) Dot-Com Bubble, working at companies like Yahoo!, Sabre, and Fiserv. After, she shifted her focus deliberately to usability and accessibility, earning a Masters in Human-Computer Interaction, and worked in house as a User Experience Researcher at Amazon and Intel, and in accessibility at Apple.
Keynote, Carrie Bisazza: Design Leadership - Solving CX At Scale, My Path from Pixels to Spreadsheets
Carrie is the Director of Selling Design Experience at eBay.

Lets get together to discuss all aspects of deep learning.
In particular, this week I'm interested in learning more about ensemble methods for deep learning. If you get a chance and are so inclined check out The Relative Performance of Ensemble Methods with Deep Convolutional Neural Networks for Image Classification
Also, bring any questions you may have on the Fast.AI or Andrew Ng's coursera course.
All levels of experience are welcome. We rarely have presentations, though we may someone leads a discussion. Bring your questions, projects and ideas, basic or advanced, and we'll try to help.
Don't forget the #deep-learning channel in the PDX Startups slack which you can join at https://pdx-startups-slack.herokuapp.com

PDX Women in Tech (PDXWIT) Happy Hour Networking Event
Roll back
| description |
***Registration through Eventbrite is required to avoid having to manually check-in at the event***
We are celebrating Giving Tuesday by joining forces with Free Geek for our Happy Hour on November 28th.
PDXWIT exists as a way to encourage, support and empower women in the Portland tech community. One way to feel empowered is to lift each other at work, and because we feel this is so important, we’ve made it the theme of this event. The conversation starter is “What's something new you can do to empower your coworkers and colleagues?”
In the spirit of giving, we will be offering a number of ways to give back to your community:
• Donate your used electronics to support Free Geek
• P:ear is organizing a “Women Supporting the Women” bra and underwear drive! For young, homeless women, it is hard to find support for their diverse and changing bodies. Let’s give them the support they need! Bring in gift certificates to Ross or other easy-to-access clothing stores for custom purchases, or raid your wardrobe for new or very lightly used bras. All sizes are needed. Practical styles encouraged, including sports and maternity. New underwear also encouraged.
• Sign up to be an individual or sustaining supporter for PDXWIT and get a green shirt!
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase three women in our community.
᛫ Introduction to Free Geek, including what they do and what job opportunities are available.
᛫ Pippa Arend, Development Director at p:ear, will talk about Ladies Supporting the Ladies.
᛫ Commissioner Smith will talk about how Multnomah County is giving women and people of color access to startup funds.
During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking:
᛫ An Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director.
᛫ Table Topics to help break the ice.
᛫ A section for job seekers and those hiring, to ensure people get connected.

While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase three women in our community.

Description:
QuoteCenter, located in Vancouver, Washington, was a $0 sales channel upon its acquisition by The Home Depot in 2013. By 2016, QuoteCenter drove more than $650 million in pro contractor sales to the world's fourth largest retailer, The Home Depot. However, with the growth in online marketplaces and the professional contractor market, QuoteCenter is fast becoming the confluence of products and services that pro contractors need to purchase the materials they need to serve their customers. Although their history lies in the in-store buying experience, QuoteCenter finds itself on the doorstep of a new age in commerce that blends technology innovation with the agility of a most talented retail workforce. Join us in learning how The Home Depot QuoteCenter is leading the way into an exciting new commerce age.
QuoteCenter has become a model for employers in the Portland area for how to build a strong, diverse team. An original Clark County rural startup, they struggled early to build a diverse team of professionals. In the last 9 months, however, 40% of their 51 new hires have been women.
Agenda:
5:00 - Welcome
5:15 - “How QuoteCenter attracts diverse candidates ” by Mike Lee, Talent Acquisition
5:45 - “The only one in the room: success and failure on the way to diversity" by Whitney Williams, Front End Developer
6:15 - “Opportunity for Leadership and Impact” by Denise Hale, Front End Developer
6:45 - Q & A
Event FAQ:
Q. What is the parking situation?
A. Paid street parking is available.
Q. Is there secure bike parking?
A. The secure bike parking is in the parking garage and requires a FOB for the building. However, there are racks in front of the building.
Q. Should I consider using public transportation?
A. We are close to the street and not far from bus routes. However, we would recommend driving and plenty of street parking is available.

Portland Linux/Unix Group Meeting
Who: Kristof Van Tomme<br>
What: Great Developer Experiences (DX) Through Great API Documentation<br>
Where: PSU, 1930 SW 4th Ave. Room FAB 86-01 (Lower Level)<br>
When: Thursday, November 2nd, 2017 at 7pm<br>
Why: The pursuit of technology freedom<br>
Stream: http://pdxlinux.org/live
Developer eXperience (DX) is crucial for the success of an API. That is why API teams build developer portals where the team can publish their API reference. This is where most teams fail. A great developer experience requires more than reference docs. In this talk Kristof Van Tomme will describe the upstream and downstream developer journey, and introduce the different documentation components you need to create a great DX.
About Kristof
Kristof is the CEO/co-founder of Pronovix, a consultancy specializing in developer portals, documentation systems, and API integrations - built in Drupal. He lives in Belgium, but runs a Write The Docs meetup and an API meetup in London. Last year his consultancy (Pronovix) customized 20+ developer portals, implementing design changes, access control, search, and other features that ambitious developer portals require. In this session he will share what he has learned.
Many will head to the Lucky Lab at 1945 NW Quimby St. after the meeting.
Rideshares to the Lucky Lab available
PLUG is open to everyone and does not tolerate abusive behavior on its mailing lists or at its meetings. |

PDX Women in Tech (PDXWIT) Westside Happy Hour
Roll back
| description |
Many of us live and/or work this side of the West Hills but may not have a professional community convenient to the area. Thanks to PDXWIT’s and Intel's support, let’s get together to talk tech.
Event co-organizer Rose Flores Medlock will speak about the value she’s derived from attending recent conferences and offer suggestions for cultivating professional development.
Anyone who works or is interested in tech is invited to join for casual conversation about the role professional development opportunities (conferences, workshops, webinars, classes, etc.) have played in your career. Think of topics you’ve learned about recently or find most interesting and contribute to the discussion!
Agenda:<br>
5:30 pm - Doors open<br>
6:00 pm - Introductions + Lightning Talks<br>
6:30 pm - Networking
Event FAQ:
Q: What is the parking situation?
A: Lots of free parking!
Q: Is there secured bike parking?
A: Bike racks only
Q: Should I consider using public transportation?
A: The closest MAX station is Orenco Station, which is a little over 1 mile away, so public transportation is possible, but may not be practical
PDXWIT Purpose:<br>
PDXWIT Westside Happy Hour is a satellite event series launched in mid-2017 to serve the tech community in/near the West Hills, SW Portland, Beaverton, Hillsboro, Tigard, and Tualatin. It will become quarterly beginning with the December 2017 gathering.
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome. |

PDX Women in Tech (PDXWIT) National Code Retreat Day

Come join us for the first anniversary of PDXWIT Coderetreat! Our first Coderetreat was on last year’s Global Day of CodeRetreat, an event during which groups of coders the world over follow the sun and stay in communication via Twitter about their progress and learning throughout the day. If you have attended one of our Coderetreats in the past, please come back and help us celebrate.
If you are new to Coderetreats, know that Coderetreat.org is a self-organized, volunteer-led organization dedicated to enabling software developers to help each other improve their craft and teaming skills. Software developers of all sorts gather with their machines, IDEs and the ready-to-code Conway's Game of Life. A Coderetreat facilitator assists the developers during several 45-minute sessions throughout the day. Iman Bilal, Tracie Lee, and Jean Richardson will be teaming up to facilitate this Coderetreat. Tech Academy is donating space and providing breakfast and lunch for the event.
Come along for a day of codeplay in a supportive environment and help Coderetreat follow the sun during the global celebration of software development! If you were there in February, we look forward to seeing you again. If you missed that event, grab your laptop, your favorite IDE, and join us.
Agenda:
8:30 AM: Doors open
9:00 AM: Introduction and orientation
5:00 PM: Event ends
