Ventures At Work is southeast Vancouver's only coworking space and MakerSpace. Our coworking space provides private offices, dedicated desks, hot desks, and conference rooms. Our MakerSpace has 3D printers, a laser cutter, and various sewing machines. You may choose a coworking or MakerSpace price plan, or you may add a MakerSpace plan to a coworking plan. You also may get a day pass for a hot desk if you don't need a full plan.
Membership includes access to wifi, scanning/copying/printing (limited), shared supplies (including a shredder), coffee, kitchen, eating area, and conversation area. Some plans also include a small three-drawer lockable file cabinet, booked use of the small conference room, and mail address and delivery.
Our conference rooms are available for rent to nonmembers. |

This month’s Emacs Meetup has been pre-empted for a full discussion about combining Emacs and VI using the Spacemacs system (see www.spacemacs.org). We are planning on three separate presentations:
1. Introduction to Spacemacs, and how to use it as either an Emacs or VI user.
2. Customizing Spacemacs using their Layer approach.
3. Vi-like Spacemacs features that neither Emacs nor VI offer, .e.g. a Lisp “modal” State for manipulating s-expressions using Paredit, and how this can be applied to other programming languages.

This is our first Weekly Meeting of 2018. To get the new year off to
a running start, we are going to lead off the meeting with a
discussion about Municipal Fiber. I am always ready to talk about it,
but particularly so this time because the simmering pot of public
opinion had an extra jolt of fire over the holidays with the
retrograde FCC vote, voiding the Open Internet rules that the previous
Wheeler FCC had adopted, and has begun to boil over. A number of
scattered efforts have emerged trying to push a municipal internet
system (e.g. on Facebook and Reddit). I have invited a number of them
to our meeting. I also saw David Olson (BCC'd) this morning and
invited him to come along, which he suggested was a possibility,
although he has another engagement, so he'll need to leave after the
first hour.
And we have a smattering of other business on the agenda.

The What is Universe? (2018) conference-experience examines communication, complexity/simplicity, coherence/incoherence and, how they may or may not contribute to “a pluralistic universe.” This conference marks the third collaboration among scholars from the natural and social sciences, communication, media, law, design, and art.
Participants will explore universes—from reality bubbles, immersive virtual environments, and alternate histories, to agential realism, media genealogy and archaeology, to bio-inspired, urban and ecological design, to universal rights, disabilities studies, multicultural communities, networks, and cosmologies. With the definitions of “universe” continuing to multiply, important questions abound as we address a sweeping range of issues next April in Portland. |

Our current model of RPM-and-config-management for Linux systems has
done well for us over the last decade and more, but is starting to show
its age. Come learn about Atomic Host, which is a new model for
managing software and maintenance for large clouds of hosts.
Josh Berkus of Red Hat will explain the Atomic Host "ostree" model for
binary updates, and how that ties in with container deployments of
applications. He will demo deploying and updating a cluster of Atomic
Hosts running OpenShift, and answer questions about this architecture.
He'll then speculate about what the future could hold, in the form of
modularity, Flatpaks, and more.
Many will head to the Lucky Lab at 1945 NW Quimby St. after the meeting.

As hybrid clouds become more prevalent, IT organizations struggle to deal with moving and managing data. While computation and applications can be outsourced, once data is generated, IT is on the hook to control it as long as it exists. Data governance and data security are particularly difficult to address in hybrid environments.
Parth Patel will discuss the importance of creating a standardized data fabric with a common data management platform that can tier access, providing hierarchical data lifecycle management for data lakes. Also included are a discussion of “in production” use cases of this tiered data lake approach for Hybrid “Ground to Cloud” environments across multiple industries.

In design education, there is no ethical code that all agree on. What about computer science or any of the other disciplines we may have been trained in? The discussions of ethics and the real-life experiences that followed have informed my understanding of universal access and ethical responsibilities of design. About the Speaker
Nancy Frishberg (@nancyf) has had several careers. The one most familiar to CHIFOO audiences is her work in qualitative research with humans, usually about improving products and services that people use and pay for and the processes that get them to those interactions and purchases. She has worked in tech companies, financial services institutions, and as a consultant to both for-profit and non-profit organizations.

Lynn has developed an approach that engages the participants in a decision-making process. It helps them prioritize and evaluate the various possibilities, resulting in a quantified outcome. It's quick to set up and execute, and the participatory nature of the process generates buy-in and acceptance of the outcome. Lynn will walk you through the method and show you a few examples. We'll discuss some variations based on your setting and the type of decision you’re making, and then Lynn will field questions from the audience.
About the Speaker
Lynn Boyden (@lrb23) trained as a librarian at UCLA and has worked for various agencies, Symantec and Yahoo!. She ran the Los Angeles office of FatDUX, where she numbered UCLA, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the University of Illinois, and KBHome among her clients. She is an information architect in ITS at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, and has taught user experience design in the Master’s degree program in Information Studies at UCLA since 2001.

We mistakenly believe that technology is neutral; that inert objects cannot have moral characteristics. And so we make embarrassing blunders – racist chatbots, manipulative research, privacy violations – that undermine trust and harm those we should help.
This is a dangerous trajectory. We urgently need a deeper ethical dialogue about emerging technology, and interaction design's role within it. This session, informed by many months of ongoing research, will discuss:
-Why companies make poor ethical decisions,
-The development of ethical thinking in other morally-charged disciplines,
-Methods of engaging users in the ethics of emerging technology,
-Ways for designers to engage positively and affect ethical outcomes, so that design decisions benefit not only ourselves but our wider communities and the world at large.

Elena Moon (@Elena_Moon) is the founder of Osage Orange, a human-centered design studio. <p>In this hands-on workshop, you’ll practice using design thinking methods to empathize with a wider group of users, and develop solutions that work better for everyone. Universal design is an approach where a primary requirement of any design is that all its users can access it, regardless of any physical or cognitive impairment they may have. It's also known as 'inclusive' or 'accessible' design. We’ll start with a short overview of how universal design can combined with design thinking to quickly deliver valuable insights during the design process. Many of us live and/or work on this side of the West Hills but may not have a professional community convenient to the area. Thanks to PDXWIT’s and Salesforce’s support, let’s get together to talk tech and other work topics.
The news at the end of 2017 was dominated by issues we encounter at the workplace regularly, so let’s talk about the part HR has played in our professional experiences. Have you seen or participated in particularly positive human resources instances? Do you have lessons to share from any “less than” situations? Hopefully, this ongoing discussion will provide support to all of us now and in the future.

Q: What is the parking situation?
A: Yes, there is plenty of free parking.
Q: Is there secured bike parking?
A: There is some space for bikes inside the building, and racks outside, but riders will need to bring locks for those racks.
Q: Should I consider using public transportation?
A: Not necessarily; Salesforce is out in the ‘burbs with plenty of parking. There is, however, a MAX stop (Orenco station, blue line) about a 10 minute walk away.

PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
