description nil The new year will be here before you know it! Let’s welcome 2018 with a meetup dedicated to science and STEM at one of the premier educational technology companies in the country right here in our backyard: Vernier Software & Technology. We will have a seasonal “fireside chat” with Vernier’s founders, Christine and David Vernier as they speak to starting a successful business in our field and thriving for 37 years. You can develop hands-on awareness of the latest classroom science tools with product demos of their new “Go Direct” sensors and probes released in 2017. Office tours (including a slide!) and networking are a given so bring your business cards (or something to write your info on) and plan your route to Beaverton. Looking forward to seeing you there!

description nil As the Ultimate Nerd Battle for Editor Anecdotal Mindshare (UNBEAM) closes in on forty years, the VI forces has taken over the Emacs Cathedral in Portland threatening the diocese. But during an intense battle of differing perspectives, a metallic ship emerges from space. Aliens beamed a message to the surface of the planet: > _Nerdy Earthlings, can we call you Nerdlings? You need not fight anymore! The best editor is neither Emacs nor Vim, it’s Emacs and Vim. Combine your ideologies and merge your effort, and please end this useless conflict._ This month’s Emacs Meetup has been pre-empted for a full discussion about combining Emacs and VI using the Spacemacs system (see www.spacemacs.org). We are planning on three separate presentations: 1. Introduction to Spacemacs, and how to use it as either an Emacs or VI user. 2. Customizing Spacemacs using their Layer approach. 3. Vi-like Spacemacs features that neither Emacs nor VI offer, .e.g. a Lisp “modal” State for manipulating s-expressions using Paredit, and how this can be applied to other programming languages. Hope to see you all there!

create Calagator::Event 1250473049 Personal Telco Project Weekly Meeting with Municipal Fiber discussion Roll back

description nil This is our first Weekly Meeting of 2018. To get the new year off to a running start, we are going to lead off the meeting with a discussion about Municipal Fiber. I am always ready to talk about it, but particularly so this time because the simmering pot of public opinion had an extra jolt of fire over the holidays with the retrograde FCC vote, voiding the Open Internet rules that the previous Wheeler FCC had adopted, and has begun to boil over. A number of scattered efforts have emerged trying to push a municipal internet system (e.g. on Facebook and Reddit). I have invited a number of them to our meeting. I also saw David Olson (BCC'd) this morning and invited him to come along, which he suggested was a possibility, although he has another engagement, so he'll need to leave after the first hour. And we have a smattering of other business on the agenda. Should be fun! See you there!

description The What is Universe? (2018) conference-experience examines communication, complexity/simplicity, coherence/incoherence and, how they may or may not contribute to “a pluralistic universe.” This conference marks the third collaboration among scholars from the natural and social sciences, communication, media, law, design, and art. Participants will explore universes—from reality bubbles, immersive virtual environments, and alternate histories, to agential realism, media genealogy and archaeology, to bio-inspired, urban and ecological design, to universal rights, disabilities studies, multicultural communities, networks, and cosmologies. With the definitions of “universe” continuing to multiply, important questions abound as we address a sweeping range of issues next April in Portland. The eighth annual What is…? conference-experience, What is Universe? examines communication, complexity/simplicity, coherence/incoherence and how they may or may not contribute to “a pluralistic universe”—networks of relationships. It addresses some of the most pressing issues of our time, including how do societies move forward when there is less shared agreement about the nature of our world, the problems confronting it, and/or the solutions necessary to improve it? Scholars, practitioners, and other participants will explore universes—from reality bubbles, immersive virtual environments, and alternate histories, to agential realism, media genealogy and archaeology, to bio-inspired, urban and ecological design, to universal rights, disabilities studies, multicultural communities and cosmologies. With definitions of “universe” continuing to multiply, important questions abound. We will address a sweeping range of issues next April in Portland, Oregon.

create Calagator::Event 1250473047 Learn about Hybrid Cloud Data Architecture @ DAMAPDX Roll back

description nil As hybrid clouds become more prevalent, IT organizations struggle to deal with moving and managing data. While computation and applications can be outsourced, once data is generated, IT is on the hook to control it as long as it exists. Data governance and data security are particularly difficult to address in hybrid environments. Parth Patel will discuss the importance of creating a standardized data fabric with a common data management platform that can tier access, providing hierarchical data lifecycle management for data lakes. Also included are a discussion of “in production” use cases of this tiered data lake approach for Hybrid “Ground to Cloud” environments across multiple industries. Topics during this session include: · Data governance · Data security · Hybrid “Cloud to Ground” architectures · Metadata management Join us at 8:30 for a continental breakfast and networking with other local data professionals. Parth's Hybrid Cloud Data Architecture presentation starts at 9 and goes to 11:30. Free parking available in the main Montgomery Park surface lot.
Speaker
Parth Patel is a Big Data Solutions Engineer at Zaloni. create Calagator::Event 1250473043 CHIFOO Event: Breaking The Veil Of Research Roll back

description nil CHIFOO presents "What Happens When You Break The Veil Of Research?" with Nancy Frishberg, Senior UX Researcher & Coach! In design education, there is no ethical code that all agree on. What about computer science or any of the other disciplines we may have been trained in? The discussions of ethics and the real-life experiences that followed have informed my understanding of universal access and ethical responsibilities of design. I'll challenge myself to make the connections between these two endeavors (interpreting and design research or human-computer interaction) clear for all. About the Speaker Nancy Frishberg (@nancyf) has had several careers. The one most familiar to CHIFOO audiences is her work in qualitative research with humans, usually about improving products and services that people use and pay for and the processes that get them to those interactions and purchases. She has worked in tech companies, financial services institutions, and as a consultant to both for-profit and non-profit organizations. CHIFOO is celebrating its 25th anniversary! Come join CHIFOO for our fifth speaker event for 2018's theme "Do the Right Thing- HCI Ethics: Where Do We Start?". http://bit.ly/2zHNcUJ

description nil CHIFOO presents "Quantifying Qualitative Decisions" with Lynn Boyden, USC IT Services! Lynn has developed an approach that engages the participants in a decision-making process. It helps them prioritize and evaluate the various possibilities, resulting in a quantified outcome. It's quick to set up and execute, and the participatory nature of the process generates buy-in and acceptance of the outcome. Lynn will walk you through the method and show you a few examples. We'll discuss some variations based on your setting and the type of decision you’re making, and then Lynn will field questions from the audience. About the Speaker Lynn Boyden (@lrb23) trained as a librarian at UCLA and has worked for various agencies, Symantec and Yahoo!. She ran the Los Angeles office of FatDUX, where she numbered UCLA, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the University of Illinois, and KBHome among her clients. She is an information architect in ITS at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, and has taught user experience design in the Master’s degree program in Information Studies at UCLA since 2001. update Calagator::Event 1250473021 CHIFOO Event: Is Design Metrically Opposed? Roll back

description CHIFOO presents "Is Design Metrically Opposed?" with Jared Spool, Center Centre & UIE! The world of metrics and analytics have often been at odds with how designers work. Design is a process where we finely tune our intuition to create great user experiences. Yet, sometimes, what we think is best rivals the metrics. So which do we believe-our gut or the data? In the world of measures, metrics, and Key Performance Indicators some practices, like the growth hacking approach to increasing Monthly Average Users (MAUs), have hurt the online experience of Instagram and LinkedIn. While alternatives to satisfaction and net promoter score give insight into the design process and help designers have better instincts. If you’re ready to talk to your teams about what you really need, help management interpret the data, and create analytical experiments that provide design insights, don’t miss this talk. About the Speaker Jared Spool (@jmspool) is a co-founder of Center Centre and the founder of UIE. While he led UIE, the industry research firm he started in 1988, the field of UX design emerged and Jared helped define what makes UX designers successful all over the world. UIE's world-class research organization produces conferences and workshops all over the world and for companies in every industry. In 2016, with Dr. Leslie Jensen-Inman, he opened Center Centre, a new school in Chattanooga, TN to create the next generation of industry-ready UX Designers. They created a revolutionary approach to vocational training, infusing Jared's decades of UX experience with Leslie's mastery of experience-based learning methodologies. CHIFOO is celebrating its 25th anniversary! description nil CHIFOO presents "Ethics In The Age Of Artificial Intelligence" with Cennydd Bowles, Cennydd Ltd! We mistakenly believe that technology is neutral; that inert objects cannot have moral characteristics. And so we make embarrassing blunders – racist chatbots, manipulative research, privacy violations – that undermine trust and harm those we should help. This is a dangerous trajectory. We urgently need a deeper ethical dialogue about emerging technology, and interaction design's role within it. This session, informed by many months of ongoing research, will discuss: -Why companies make poor ethical decisions, -The development of ethical thinking in other morally-charged disciplines, -Methods of engaging users in the ethics of emerging technology, -Ways for designers to engage positively and affect ethical outcomes, so that design decisions benefit not only ourselves but our wider communities and the world at large. description nil
In this hands-on workshop, you’ll practice using design thinking methods to empathize with a wider group of users, and develop solutions that work better for everyone. Universal design is an approach where a primary requirement of any design is that all its users can access it, regardless of any physical or cognitive impairment they may have. It's also known as 'inclusive' or 'accessible' design. We’ll start with a short overview of how universal design can combined with design thinking to quickly deliver valuable insights during the design process. This will be an easy, fun, and very interactive introduction to combining universal design and design thinking methods!

Light refreshments will be provided.

Portland Community Design Thinkers and Portland Accessibility and User Experience are excited to partner to bring you this meetup. This event will be limited to 40 participants - if your plans change, please update your RSVP.

We look forward to having you join us in our first meetup of the new year!

description nil ***Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-west-side-mixer-tickets-41628485922] is required to avoid having to manually check-in at the event *** Many of us live and/or work on this side of the West Hills but may not have a professional community convenient to the area. Thanks to PDXWIT’s and Salesforce’s support, let’s get together to talk tech and other work topics. The news at the end of 2017 was dominated by issues we encounter at the workplace regularly, so let’s talk about the part HR has played in our professional experiences. Have you seen or participated in particularly positive human resources instances? Do you have lessons to share from any “less than” situations? Hopefully, this ongoing discussion will provide support to all of us now and in the future. Agenda: 5:30 p.m. - Doors open 6:00 p.m. - Introductions + Lightning Talks 6:30 p.m. - Networking 7:30 p.m. - Event ends Event FAQ: Q: What is the parking situation? A: Yes, there is plenty of free parking. Q: Is there secured bike parking? A: There is some space for bikes inside the building, and racks outside, but riders will need to bring locks for those racks. Q: Should I consider using public transportation? A: Not necessarily; Salesforce is out in the ‘burbs with plenty of parking. There is, however, a MAX stop (Orenco station, blue line) about a 10 minute walk away. Purpose: PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women. Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome.
