AgilePDX: Virtual Pub Lunch on Hiring - Agile Outside of Engineering
Roll back
| description |
Have traffic and work schedules prevented you from joining an agile event on a topic which could help you or your teams? Then a virtual "pub lunch" may be the answer!
This agile lunch discussion is a collaborative effort between Seattle and Portland agile minds, and we're hoping it won't stop there. The event is held on a zoom conference line. We've learned using video is best, and you might consider your environment before joining -- find a quiet space where you won't be interrupted or feel self conscious. We're monitoring chat as a back channel, so if you can't find a spot in the discussion, add your question in chat and our hosts will try to work it in.
**This weeks topic:**
Agile Outside of Engineering!
The tech industry has collaborated for some time now to find new and better ways to tackle complex problems and deliver value to our stakeholders. And it seems companies have taken notice and agile "good practices" or "lessons learned" are being adopted outside of engineering groups. Methods like limiting your work in progress, planning & working in smaller increments, daily updates & coordination, review & adapt sessions are popping up in other departments and disciplines.
Invite your friends to share stories and insights of such agile practices outside of software teams and IT departments. We can all learn from each other and would love to see new voices join, sharing unique challenges and solutions.
<h2><a title="صور الحمد لله" href="https://rebrand.ly/Pictures-Alhamdallah">صور الحمدلله</a></h2>
Please RSVP at our Meetup event and get the zoom connection info: https://www.meetup.com/AgilePDX-User-Group-Portland-Metro/events/254179707/ |

OWASP Portland Chapter Meeting - SAST and the Bad Human Code Project
Roll back
| description |
SAST and the Bad Human Code Project
Static application security testing (SAST) is the automated analysis of source code both in its text and compiled forms. Lint is considered to be one of the first tools to analyze source code and this year marks its 40th anniversary. Even though it wasn't explicitly searching for security vulnerabilities back then, it did flag suspicious constructs. Today there are a myriad of tools to choose from both open source and commercial. We’ll talk about things to consider when evaluating web application scanners then turn our attention to finding additional ways to aggregate and correlate data from other sources such as git logs, code complexity analyzers and even rosters of students who completed secure coding training in an attempt to build a predictive vulnerability model for any new application that comes along.
We’re also looking for people to contribute to a new open source initiative called “The Bad Human Code Project.” The goal is to create a one-stop corpus of intentionally vulnerable code snippets in as many languages as possible.
<h2><a title="صور الحمد لله" href="https://rebrand.ly/Pictures-Alhamdallah">صور الحمدلله</a></h2>
Speaker's Bio:
John L. Whiteman is a web application security engineer at Oregon Health and Science University. He builds security tools and teaches a hands-on secure coding class to developers, researchers and anyone else interested in protecting data at the institution. He previously worked as a security researcher for Intel's Open Source Technology Center. John recently completed a Master of Computer Science at Georgia Institute of Technology specializing in Interactive Intelligence. He loves talking with like-minded people who are interested in building the next generation of security controls using technologies such as machine learning and AI. |

RactiveJS workshop with Marty Nelson
Roll back
| description |
An introduction and exploration of live, reactive templating with RactiveJS.
Whether you're a beginner or a veteran of web development, leverage your HTML, JS, and CSS knowledge to easily create dynamic data-driven applications and websites.
RSVP Here: ractivejs-workshop-april.eventbrite.com
###What is Ractive JS?
Ractive is a template-driven UI library, but unlike other tools that generate inert HTML, it transforms your templates into blueprints for apps that are interactive by default.
Some tools force you to learn a new vocabulary and structure your app in a particular way. Ractive works for you, not the other way around – and it plays well with other libraries.
###What will the workshop cover?
####Templating
We'll cover the mustache basics and then dive into the expanded abilities of two-way binding, sections and expressions. Patterns for common use cases like master/detail relationships.
####Data, Binding and Observers
Controlling data through template binding and programmatic manipulation. Establishing data flows with observers.
Decorators, Events and Transitions & Animations
Encapsulate DOM manipulation, respond to events and provide intro and outro effects
####Components
Apply the fundamentals of Ractive in a modular fashion to build composable, powerful apps
Advanced Configuration and Instantiation, and more
###Resources to get started
* http://www.ractivejs.org/
<h2><a title="صور الحمد لله" href="https://rebrand.ly/Pictures-Alhamdallah">صور الحمدلله</a></h2>
###Installation
Using Ractive can be as simple as adding a script tag in the browser.
__However__, for this workshop please make sure you have node.js installed as will be exploring ractive in a modern build environment. Here's how to get started: http://docs.ractivejs.org/latest/get-started-with-node-js

Galois Tech Talk: Slava Pestov on the Factor programming language
Roll back
| description |
Factor is a programming language which has been in development for a little over 5 years. Factor is influenced by Forth, Lisp, Smalltalk. Factor takes the best ideas from Forth — simplicity, short, succint, code, emphasis on interactive testing, and meta-programming. Factor also brings modern high-level language features such as garbage collection, object orientation and functional programming familiar to users of languages such as Lisp, Smalltalk and Python. Finally, recognizing that no programming language is an island, Factor is portable, ships with a full-featured standard library, deploys stand-alone binaries, and interoperates with C and Objective-C.
In this talk, I will give the rationale for Factor’s creation, present an overview of the language, and show how Factor can be used to solve real-world problems with a minimum of fuss. At the same time, I will emphasize Factor’s extensible syntax, meta-programming and reflection capabilities, and show that these features, which are unheard of in the world of mainstream programming languages, make programs easier to write, more robust, and fun.
<h2><a title="صور الحمد لله" href="https://rebrand.ly/Pictures-Alhamdallah">صور الحمدلله</a></h2>
Biography:
Slava was born in the former USSR and emigrated to New Zealand at the age of 7. He moved to Ottawa, Canada when he was 18 to study for a Bachelors and Masters degree in Mathematics. He now resides in Minneapolis, Minnesota. An early adopter of Java, Slava wrote the popular jEdit text editor, then went on to design and implement the Factor programming language. At his day job he hacks on web apps, optimizing compilers, garbage collectors, and everything in between
.
Galois has been holding weekly technical seminars for several years on topics from functional programming, formal methods, compiler and language design, to cryptography, and operating system construction, with talks by many figures from the programming language and formal methods communities.
The talks are open and free. If you're planning to attend, dropping a note to is appreciated, but not required. If you're interested in giving a talk, we're always looking for new speakers. |

Vibrant Data PDX Hackathon
Roll back
| description |
Imagine a world in which data becomes a personal asset that works on behalf of our personal interests and communities. Everyday, apps like yours could control how to send their data out into the world to circulate and bring back value to users. Certainly this would require a change in the way the world views data today, and in the infrastructure that enables it to flow freely while protected. This event is a first step in building that infrastructure for the benefit of all.
Consider the prospect of Facebook, Google, Amazon, LinkedIn and other data silos bidding against each other for what data you might provide. What kinds of data might be the most interesting? How could that value be enhanced? How could you collect it with minimal effort? How would your privacy be protected? What could you get in return?
At this event you’ll pick a particular type of personal data and build an app to show how its value as a personal asset can be enhanced. The app can be mobile, desktop, web or something else.
About <a href="http://vibrantdata.org">Vibrant Data</a>
Inspired by the Arab Spring popular uprisings’ use of Facebook and Twitter, The Vibrant Data Project is trying to understand the development landscape that is giving rise to the Gutenburg press of our era: disruptive communication and commerce vehicles that have the potential to overthrow corrupt regimes, spread new ideas, broaden economic opportunity, improve health and well being and aid in the fight for social justice and human rights.

Automating Security in AWS Cloud
Roll back
| description |
AWS customers continue to struggle demonstrating alignment with security, compliance and audit requirements, such as the PCI-DSS. Additionally, many compliance requirements necessitate administrative and operational security controls that lack technical validation.
This workshop is designed to instruct AWS cloud engineers, DevOps team members, security practitioners, and Managed Security Service Providers (MSSP) how to secure and manage regulated customer workloads in AWS. This class will focus on the security of an AWS customer account design (e.g. AWS CIS Foundation Benchmark), security architecture (e.g. AWS CIS 3-Tier Web Benchmark) and security automation leading practices. This workshop is an intermediate to advanced workshop with an emphasis on designing security automation for regulated workloads in AWS (e.g. PCI, DoD, CJIS, HIPAA, DFARs (800-171), FERPA and others).
The result will enable cloud engineers and security practitioners to design, architect and implement automation in an AWS customer account to automatically enforce compliance requirements. It will also enable attendees to document their security governance/audit readiness through integration of AWS Security Partners from our AWS Marketplace and Security Competency Partners and Solutions.
What will I learn in this class?
How to design automation in AWS to enforce security controls and compliance requirements
Automate audit findings to accelerate the compliance process
Use AWS Partners and Marketplace tools to create more secure and reliable environments
Course Objectives:
<h2><a title="رسائل تعزية" href="https://rebrand.ly/condolence">رسائل تعزية</a></h2>
Establish secure foundational account design and/or remediation of existing customer accounts
Configure and manage AWS Security Services with a focus on automation
Implement and design security automation services through AWS services and partner solutions
Manage, secure and audit the use of AWS services using real-time risk management processes
Leverage shared compliance across multiple security frameworks (e.g. PCI, DoD, CJIS, etc.)
Learn about and leverage key security partners from the AWS Partner Network (APN)
Learn about Container Security, Serverless Architecture, Advanced Encryption, and Auto-Healing in AWS |

PDX OSGeo Monthly meeting
Roll back
| description |
Monthly meeting of the Portland open source GIS group. Projects big and small are usually presented monthly along with rousing conversation and discussion. All are welcome, no need to RSVP - our group ranges from the geo-curious to the überhackers so bring your ideas and questions!
This month's agenda: exciting happenings in geodata, upcoming geoevents and bring your own geo-show and tell.
This month our special guest is Nicholas Chun, manager of the Oregon Population Forecast Program (OPFP). The OPFP produces regularly updated, coordinated population forecasts for Oregon counties and cities to assist them with their long term land use planning strategies. In addition to his primary role, Nick regularly create demographic profiles for customized areas using census data. Most of his data extraction and manipulation is done in R studio because of its flexibility and diverse number of packages. Among other things, Nick will be demonstrating how to use R to grab census data from the official APIs and produce basic choropleth maps. Bring your questions and come prepared to learn!
As always, there will be pizza! And BYOB is always welcome.

If you're planning to attend, dropping a note to <[email protected]> is appreciated, but not required. If you're interested in giving a talk, we're always looking for new speakers. |

* http://www.ractivejs.org/
* https://github.com/martypdx/ractive-workshop
###Installation
Using Ractive can be as simple as adding a script tag in the browser.
__However__, for this workshop please make sure you have node.js installed as will be exploring ractive in a modern build environment. Here's how to get started: http://docs.ractivejs.org/latest/get-started-with-node-js
