Interested in How Music Copyrights Work?
Roll back

Eric Cole came up with an amazing topic idea and plans to research and share his findings on Music Copyrights. We are curious how sharing works when editing music even if it's free for personal download.

SANS Community Event
Roll back
| description |
Join SANS Instructors Brian Ventura and Derek Hill for an evening of conversation regarding Secure configurations - Built-in Security Enhancements and the benefit of the CISSP certification from a hiring manager perspective.
<h2><a title="حالات حب" href="https://rebrand.ly/Love-whatsapp">حالات حب</a></h2>
TOPICS
1. In the information security news, we regularly hear about the latest vulnerabilities with recommendations to scramble and patch immediately. This is an important aspect of our industry, however there are other security considerations. Are there configurations we can set now in our systems and software that will protect us? Let's explore secure configurations and see what we find.
2. The Hiring Manager is looking at your resume – why does CISSP matter? While the CISSP is not the only thing we look at, it is a great starting point. What knowledge does the CISSP provide and how does one prepare for the exam?
Who is Brian Ventura: Brian Ventura is an Information Security Architect by day and SANS instructor by night. Brian volunteers with the Portland ISSA and OWASP chapters, focusing on educational opportunities. For SANS, he regularly teaches CyberDefense courses like the CIS Controls, Risk Management, and Security Essentials. Brian has a Security Essentials (SEC401) course in Portland, June 18-23. Come join in the learning experience!
Who is Derek Hill? Derek Hill has over 25 years of experience in IT and Information Security. He currently manages an Application Security Team, an Infrastructure Security Team (Blue Team) and a Data Privacy Engineering team at HP Inc. in Vancouver, WA. His teams are responsible for ensuring that HP’s internally developed applications are secure as well as the AWS infrastructure that is hosting these applications. Prior to his current position, Derek held IT management and technical roles at both large and small companies. In each role, he has focused on delivering excellent services, uptime and security for all the projects/staff he managed.
Derek holds an MBA from Willamette University and an undergraduate degree in Management Information Systems from Oregon State University. He has various security credentials including a CISSP and multiple GIAC certifications.
DATE: Thursday, May 10, 2018

Newsroom Security in the US and Abroad
Roll back
| description |

In the past decade, media organizations and newsrooms have become high value targets for digital attacks. Whether it is governments purchasing spyware to illegally surveil reporters in the diaspora, like the government of Ethiopia has been caught doing twice, or information campaigns to discredit news sources, newsrooms have become targets of government 'cyber warfare'.
Norman Shamas will lead a conversation on some of the current threats and the state of security in newsrooms in the US and around the globe (primary focus on South Africa) followed by a conversation on a new training guide for US-based newsrooms([1]), which Norman helped write.
This month's TA3M will be interactive and an open discussion. If you are interested in walking through any of the modules during the meeting, please post a comment in the discussion or send the organizer a message through Meetup.

Just like fight club, if this is your first night attending, you have to present.
Discussing your startup, recent project, code reviews, business ideas, etc. are all applicable. There is not a required length of time to present. This can be a live prototype or even a set of powerpoint slides. You do not have to know how to code to present your dream, and we are HERE TO HELP you. Presentations are meant to be collaborative, not the traditional meetup style where a presenter talks like a teacher for a very long time and saves questions for the end. We use a timer and the group dynamic works to collaboratively prevent cross talk and side conversations. So bring your computer, fun spirit and desire to learn, and let's have fun.
Signups through meetup.com are required and seats are limited, so buy your tickets early because we usually sell out. We are self funded, and 100% of the revenue received is put back into the meetup costs. We will have top shelf pizza from Crown PDX (http://www.imperialpdx.com/the-crown/) so come HUNGRY for dinner!!
Doors open at 6pm and we kick off on time. After the concert of presentations we will walk over to Bailey's Taproom (http://www.baileystaproom.com/) to continue the evening.
Location: WeWork Customs House : Room 1C : When you check in ask for CP Handheld, they are our sponsor. The room is right to the left as you walk in. |

AgilePDX: Lean Coffee in the North
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Join us for coffee/tea or beverage of your choice and fun discussions about how to overcome challenges we face or to share about Agile-inspired and other topics we agree or disagree with. This event is aimed at getting people in the North and NE areas of Portland together to facilitate discussions. It's not exclusive to people that live in the North and NE, just closer to those parts of the city to make it easier to come out. (If you want something other than tea or coffee, you'll have to bring it with you. We'll have hot water and cups available.)
**Percipio Consulting Group is opening up their offices to host this event.**
Percipio is a business consulting firm that helps companies identify opportunities for improvement and successfully implement meaningful changes. That means more efficient processes, shored-up controls, a technology solution that really works for you, or all of the above. They have helped many companies, both Fortune 500 and mid-sized, navigate complex projects by truly understanding business needs and defining up front what success will look like.
**Parking:** Use the Gotham Building Parking lot on the corner of N Page St and N Borthwick Ave.
**Building Entry:** Entry to the building is best through the door by Little Gotham Coffee. We'll have someone meeting on time attendees at the door. For those that run a few minutes late due to traffic or other reasons out of your control, there will be directions at the door on how to contact someone to let you in.
We'll spend the first few minutes gathering discussion ideas, then roll right into the smooth easy cadence of the lively chatter.
##**New to Lean Coffee?**
It's a great way to have real, focused dialogue and we often discuss matters of agile, lean and such - but anything goes. As far as the mechanics, here's the format we'll follow:
**Step 1:** Everybody writes down proposed topics on stickies, placing them in the center of the table. Take as much time as needed, but typically takes only 3-5 minutes (or whenever coffee is ready).
**Step 2:** Each topic is briefly described by its writer to get a flavor for the subject (15-30 seconds typically per sticky).
**Step 3:** Each person gets five votes which they indicate by marking the voted-for sticky with their Sharpie. Mark with a plus + if you agree with the topic and want to discuss it, or a minus - if you disagree and want to discuss it, mark it with a dot if you want to hear the discussion and maybe join in. You can put all votes on one, one across many, however you feel. Each mark counts as one vote.
**Step 4:** The top vote-getting stickies are placed in the ToDo column, ordered by the stickies with the most votes at the top. In an Agile fashion, we'll use groupings of ToDo, Doing, Done and Lessons learned.
**Step 5:** Each of these stickies are discussed for 5 minutes, most votes first. The facilitator takes a quick "Cesar" (thumbs up/down) vote at the five-minute timer, and she moves on for three more minutes if the discussion still has majority interest. When complete, move the sticky over to the Done column. Rinse and repeat.
**Step 6:** wrap-up thoughts at the end - what one idea or person did you most enjoy, then break for home/drinks/cover. |

PDX Women in Tech (PDXWIT) September Happy Hour
Roll back
| description |
***Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-september-happy-hour-tickets-49177317681] is required to gain entry to this event ***
Join us for Happy Hour at Schrodinger on September 18th.
We talk a lot about the importance of technical skills at every level of the technology industry, but our soft skills can be just as important, if not more! This month we are focusing on how we can nurture and leverage our soft-skills and natural strengths at work. To facilitate this discussion we’ve set the conversation starter to “how can you create space for folks transitioning into tech.”
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase three women in our community.
An employee of Schrodinger will provide an introduction to the company and share open job opportunities.
Shauna Levy, of Shauna Levy Strengths + Leadership LLC, will tell us how understanding our natural strengths (the things we do without thinking) can be applied to improve our performance and satisfaction at work.
Caroline Clyburn, licensed massage therapist, will talk about self-care, and how it relates to health, happiness, and performance!
During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking:
An Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director.
Table Topics to help break the ice.
A section for job seekers and our sponsors who are hiring, to ensure people get connected.
Agenda:
4:30 p.m. - Doors open/Networking
5:30 p.m. - Introductions, Announcements + Lightning Speakers
6:30 p.m. - Event ends
Event FAQ:

Q: Will there be food and drink at this event?
A: Yes there will be food and drink with labeled vegan and GF options
Q: What is the parking situation?

A: Entering: Guests can come in through SW 5th and SW Morrison Avenue and make their way to the top floor of Pioneer Place mall.
Exiting: When the mall is closed (after 8 pm), guests can use our private elevator exit that will drop them directly on 5th Avenue.
Q: Is there secured bike parking?
A: No
Q: Should I consider using public transportation?
A: YES - max and bus accessible
Q: Can I bring my dog?
A: No, we ask that you leave your furry friend home.
Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome. |

Many of us live and/or work on the west side of the metro area but may not have a convenient professional community nearby. Thanks to PDXWIT and Discogs support, we can get together to talk tech and other work topics.
Regardless of company or industry, often our work centers around designing products, communication, functionality, etc. for end users. What strategies do you follow to be successful? What challenges have you faced and how did you overcome them? Let’s chat about this and other topics, share ideas, and network on the West Side.
Guest speaker Mark Chesney will tell us about machine learning, artificial intelligence and computer vision, and why women should be involved in all of these technologies.

Modern business is fluid. Critical business events must be responded to when they occur. Delays mean lost opportunities and sub-optimal outcomes. Modern analytics must be as agile as the business itself.
The days of looking at your data in the rear-view mirror are coming to an end. We are at the dawn of a new analytic revolution: the real-time database.
Millisecond latency is the new analytic performance standard. A new class of GPU-accelerated databases enable this level of performance. GPU-accelerated databases are over 100x more performant than even the “fastest” in-memory data stores.
GPU-accelerated databases can provide extreme levels of scalability without negative performance impacts. They are also easy to implement; thanks to their use of ANSI-standard SQL and hybrid visualization capabilities. This makes them particularly attractive for some of the most demanding analytic tasks; like scoring of predictive models, and geospatial visualizations.
Join Amit Vij from Kinetica to learn how GPU-accelerated databases can enable real-time businesses.
Speaker
Amit is President and Co-Founder of Kinetica. Amit is responsible for the vision and strategic decisions for the company. Having a background in computer engineering, he has over a decade of software development experience in the commercial and federal space, with an emphasis in analyzing and visualizing big data, and helped architect Kinetica. Amit served as the chief GEOINT technical architect as a contractor for a major Top Secret cloud initiative between the US Army, NSA, and the DIA. Prior to Kinetica, Amit was a subject matter expert on geospatial intelligence with General Dynamics AIS and had been chief architect for several Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security contracts. Mob Programming is a software development practice with many benefits - it raises code quality, removes knowledge silos, minimizes mental fatigue, and more. In practice it feels more like a bulldozer than a racecar - unstoppable and thorough. The core of mob programming is pointing many pairs of eyes on a single problem, pushing all the code through a single keyboard. Each month we'll explore different methods for learning to mob well and reaping the rewards of this practice as soon as possible on your own team.
We may choose to head over to McMennamin's Kennedy School for food, drink, and talk afterwards.
Facilitator Bio:
Willem Larsen is a senior software developer at Hunter Industries. He has been speaking at Agile conferences on improving collaboration since 2009. He is the creator of accelerated team learning tools such as the Mob Programming role-playing game and Code Cooking (with Emmanuel Gaillot), author of the Language Hunter's Kit, co-author of 5 Rules For Accelerated Learning, founder of Language Hunters (a non-profit organization dedicated to improving communities of learning in technology, language, science, and music), and both a wildlife tracker and Search and Rescue tracker. |

<h3>
Building and Deploying Predictive Models - A full day Data Education and Networking Event coming to Portland October 18th
</h3>
Join your fellow Lovers of Data for a full day of data education and networking provided by your local Portland DAMA Chapter. The DAMA Portland Chapter Board, in conjunction with our sponsors WhereScape, are proud to welcome back one of our most popular speakers, Dean Abbott of Abbott Analytics. Dean is one of Cognilytica's 50 Data Science Influencers to follow for 2018.
This training is all day in downtown Portland Oregon, with Breakfast and Lunch provided. Dean will present four progressive sessions covering the building and deployment of predictive models. The sessions will include demos, and Dean prefers a largely interactive format allowing plenty of time for Q&A both during the sessions and at the end of the day.
Sponsorship has allowed us to lower the price this year for this all day training to $49 for chapter members and employees of DAMA sponsor companies ($69 general public) . This is an amazing value for your training budget, especially if you are looking for exposure to data science and how to apply predictive modeling to your business use-cases.
