Season 2, episode 4
Get up early and work on your side projects with some like-minded geeks!
TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference.
So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. Or, if you can't be there in person, join us on IRC at #techcoffee on freenode. One commit a week is all we ask.

Tech for Tomorrow: How to Win the Sustainable Innovation Race
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
We all know Ghandi once said: “Be the change you want to see in the world.” Many of us are pretty good at practicing that principle in our personal lives, but what about at work? The goal of this one day workshop is to motivate and educate potential “change agents” in the high tech and IT industries on how to use the scientifically-based framework of The Natural Step (TNS) in launching successful sustainability initiatives in their organization. You can then apply this framework and the new ways of thinking presented in this course to make you and your organization more innovative, more competitive and ultimately more sustainable.
Training Objectives: What You Will Learn
* A whole systems perspective for considering sustainability
* The Natural Step framework, including the four system conditions
* The basic science underlying The Natural Step Framework
* How the framework is used for decision making and strategic planning
* Suggested ideas for applying the TNS framework in technology organizations
* Resources for fresh ideas and assistance when you wonder what to do next
* Through case studies, how organizations have benefited from implementing the framework

The L4.verified Project
Presented by Dr. Gerwin Klein.
Last year, the NICTA L4.verifed project produced a formal machine-checked Isabelle/HOL proof that the C code of the seL4 OS microkernel correctly implements its abstract implementation. This talk will give an overview of the proof together with its main implications and assumptions, and will show in which kinds of systems this formally verified kernel can be used for gaining assurance on overall system security. |

Raising the Bar at Intel: A Project Retrospective Case Study (Rose City SPIN Seminar)
Roll back

<h2>Rose City Software Process Improvement Network (SPIN) Seminar</h2>
Dates/Times: Thursday, May 27th, 2010; Networking @ 6:00 PM with Pizza; Seminar 7:00-8:00 PM
This event is free and open to the public.
<h2>Abstract</h2>
Retrospectives can be one of the most effective tools in process improvement. They allow projects and organizations to identify the key issues and improvements for success and provide a platform to create buy in and clear steps to implement positive change. Come join Debra Lavell from Intel Corp. as she shares a case study taken from a real project from Intel, where a project manager has been asked to gather and share key learnings from a very important software program. The twist â this team has zero travel budget, complex cross-organizational cultural differences, and a high level of resistance to change. Debra will discuss how a retrospective is different from other review practices such as post mortems, after action reviews, etc. She will explain the four phases of a retrospective process with emphasis on the role of the facilitator so when you leave, you can design and deliver an effective retrospective when you get back to your organizations.
<h2>Speaker Bio</h2>
Debra Lavell is the Organizational Learning & Retrospective Program Manager in the Corporate Platform Office at Intel Corporation. With over 10 years of experience, Debra has delivered over 300 Project and Milestone Retrospectives for Intel world-wide. Prior to her work in quality, Debra spent over 5 years managing an IT department responsible for a 500+-node network for ADC Telecommunications. Debra is a member of the Rose City Software Process Improvement Network (SPIN) Steering Committee. She currently is the President of the Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference, Portland, Oregon. She holds a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Management with an emphasis on Industrial Relations
<h2>A Special Treat from PNSQC</h2>
Plan on coming early! In collaboration with the Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference (PNSQC) the SPIN meeting will have pizza and soda provided by PNSQC beginning at 6:00 pm.
PNSQC is the Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference, a group of volunteers interested in Software Quality. The Mission of the PNSQC is to enable knowledge exchange to produce higher quality software. As a non-profit, it seeks to promote software quality by providing education and opportunities for information exchange within the software community.
<h2>How to Register</h2>
This is a FREE lecture sponsored by the Rose City SPIN.
<h2>Rose City SPIN</h2>
The Rose City Software Process Improvement Network (SPIN) is a monthly forum for networking, mutual support, and promotion of effective software practices. We exchange practical experiences, ideas, knowledge, wisdom, and war stories about the technical, business, and human facets of software process improvement. The Rose City SPIN serves the software development community of the Portland/Vancouver metro area. Whether you work for a large company or a small one, corporate or self-employed, industrial or academic setting, you are welcome at the Rose City SPIN.

PDXPHP - Meeting with Haiping Zhao of Facebook
Roll back
| description |

I'm Very pleased to announce that <a href="http://www.facebook.com/hzhao">Haiping</a>, Senior Server Engineer at facebook and main engineer behind <a href="http://developers.facebook.com/blog/post/358">HipHop for PHP</a> will be meeting with the PDXPHP group on June 3rd.  HipHop is one of the major developments in the PHP-verse as of late and it's announcement certainly generated quite a bit of hubbub.  Be sure to come down to learn all about HipHop and related work, plus what it's like being an engineer at Facebook.
<blockquote><em>HipHop for PHP isn't technically a compiler itself. Rather it is a source code transformer. HipHop programmatically transforms your PHP source code into highly optimized C++ and then uses g++ to compile it. HipHop executes the source code in a semantically equivalent manner and sacrifices some rarely used features â such as eval() â in exchange for improved performance. HipHop includes a code transformer, a reimplementation of PHP's runtime system, and a rewrite of many common PHP Extensions to take advantage of these performance optimizations.</em></blockquote> |

Our next meeting is Wednesday, May 19th, at the usual place & time: 7pm at PIE (1227 NW Davis St). This week we'll hear from Lennon Day-Reynolds about his in-house model migration library, and from Jeff "rozwell" Kistler about fromagerie [1], his private package index reusable app. In addition, we're putting together a few lightning talks covering some of the things new in Django 1.2 [2].
So far we've got Chris McDonald on what's new in the feed class, myself on the new CSRF protection system, and Dermot Maty on Multi-DB. We've got room for a couple more, so why not add your name to the list?

PDXScala Meeting
Roll back
| description |
Details to come... |
→ |
It's that time again! It seems to sneak up on me and if I'm not careful, I'll forget to send these notices out entirely. But fate intervened and I was reminded about it just now, so... without further ado... I'm happy to say we have what looks to be a very interesting talk this month being given by Stephen Judkins. Here's the description in his own words:
----
GOTO Considered Awesome: Delimited Continuations in Scala
Scala 2.8 adds support for delimited continuations, a powerful control-flow abstraction. First, I'll show how the the impressive power offered by continuations can be used for good or evil. I will demonstrate how they can be used to implement GOTO in Scala, then I'll show how a simple, synchronous Scala program can be transformed into a distributed, asynchronous web application that could support millions of concurrent users.
I'll explain what a continuation actually is, and how Scala's are "delimited". I'll step though the code transformations the Scala compiler performs in order to support continuations. I'll show the limitations of Scala's continuation support and how it could be improved. Finally, I'll explain how continuations are a fundamental abstraction upon which many other things can be built.
----
If you have other topics you'd like to discuss or just want to come hear how others are using Scala, please come join us. There is always plenty of opportunity for open discussions and mini-presentations. |

Research Club Nerd Night
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
You are cordially invited to the Research Club Nerd Night at the new Research Club location on May 22 at 5pm!
Research Club has just moved into its first dedicated location after nearly a year of hosting discussions, salon-style dinners, events, and the popular Research Club Brunch. Located in the heart of the central-eastside industrial district, we’re sharing a 660 square-foot space with Grand Detour, Portland’s new center for experimental documentary and new media.
What We are Offering
---------------------------------
A large portion of the Research Club community comes from the local tech scene. A few collaborations have already grown out of meetings at Research Club brunch, but we would like to learn how to better serve this (large) portion of our community. The first half of Nerd Night will be a discussion of ways in which the new space and the other efforts of Research Club can contribute to the things that interest you.
What We are Asking --
It’s all well and good to have a new home in meatspace, but if we’re really going to reach people we need a better home online. Ním, the founder of Research Club, will be presenting a proposal for the Research Club Network, an explanation of why it matters, and a call to join the development team.
Afterwards: Stay after for refreshments and a chance to mingle with the artsy folks who will be arriving for the Art Department Orientation. (Feel free to stay for that too.)
215 E Morrison, Suite 2020
5:00 -- discussion of space use
6:00 -- Research Club Network proposal
7:00 refreshments served, opportunity to mingle with the artsy folk coming for the Research Club Art Department Orientation
7:30 -- Art Department Orientation
8:00 -- late: discussion and local pub-crawl
For more information and/or to RSVP, please check out our Facebook event! Hope to see you there.

Abstract:
Embedding active devices in the circuit board offers improved performance by cutting interconnect parasitics, reliability gains by eliminating wire-bonds and solder-bumps, and reduced cost and size by parts list reduction. Like every new development, these benefits come at a price: disrupted logistics, altered partitioning & design constraints, yield management considerations, and limited rework and repair options.
After a brief review of embedded packaging drivers this presentation looks at the leading commercial and developmental approaches from around the world emphasizing the various approaches to overcoming the barriers mentioned in the previous paragraph. Examples of specific embedded package structures, including GEâs ECBU, Verdantâs Occam, Infineonâs TWLP, Freescaleâs RCP, Casioâs EWLP, Shinkoâs EOP, and Imberaâs IMB technologies, demonstrate both the power and limitations of these approaches. Next, the presentation treats practical implementation challenges such as yield management strategies and supply chain restructuring. Finally, the presentation concludes with an assessment of the outlook for embedded packaging.
Speaker:
Charles E. Bauer, Ph.D. serves as Senior Managing Director of TechLead Corporation, a technology management company specializing in the electronics packaging, interconnection and assembly industry. Dr. Bauer focuses in the areas of strategic technology planning, market analysis and business development, particularly in the international arena.

Abstract:
In the last two years, the robotic research community seems to consider that 2D laser-based SLAM is a solved problem. I will not contradict the fact that 2D laser SLAM has reached a maturity that has allowed it to break out of the lab into commercial applications. In this presentation, I will present my experience testing our SLAM algorithm on commercial projects or how our clients are pushing the limit of our algorithms and how multiples robots are now required to map large, complex structures.

OEN HR Outreach Event - Hiring Right: Asking the Right Questions
Roll back
| description |
Perkins & Company
1211 SW Fifth Ave, Suite 1000
Portland, OR 97204-
While Oregon and Southwest Washington economies have endured huge recessionary turmoil, signs are beginning to indicate that it is time to think future, not past. Business owners and HR professionals now need to think longer term, with an emphasis on hiring the right individuals as they lay out a roadmap for ongoing success. With so many people looking for work, the question becomes, "How do I make the right choice or choices?" This seminar is designed to help you do just that!
Too often, well-intentioned interviewers believe that asking the right questions will lead to hearing or not hearing the right answers. This seminar is designed to focus on both the questions and the answers. If youâve ever thought you made the perfect hire only to be led astray, this seminar is for you.
â¢Improve your own interviewing communication skills
â¢Identify what questions you would like your candidates to ask
â¢Know what youâre listening for when you ask, âDo you have any questions?â
â¢Uncover how serious your candidates are about your job offering

PDMA Learning and Networking Event - Communicating Market Requirements
Roll back
| description |
PDMA LEARNING EVENT - THURSDAY, MAY 20th, 5:30-7:30 pm
FIXING THE #1 CAUSE OF NEW PRODUCT FAILURE EFFECTIVELY COMMUNICATING MARKET REQUIREMENTS TO R&D
Save $5 and avoid cash hassles by pre-registering here for this great event!
http://www.pdma.org/oregon)
Poor or incomplete requirements are the number one reason why new products fail. One study associated 74% of failed products with deficient or missing market studies. The goal is to establish a common understanding between marketing and R&D of a prioritized set of customer requirements so R&D can create customer value through innovative products. A Market Requirements Document (MRD) is an attempt to provide this critical communication, but frequently leads to frustration, confusion, and internal battles.
The Oregon Chapter of the Product Development and Management Association (PDMA) invites you to its May Learning and Networking Event. At this event, three experienced product planning professionals will explain the strengths and common failings of MRDs and other techniques used to communicate market opportunities. Three important perspectives will be represented: the theory of what should be done, the reality of how it is done at a large, successful corporation (Intel), and the challenges of trying to do it at small companies with limited resources.
Panelists:
Devu Pandit - Senior Program Manager at Intel
Robb Robles - Principal Product Marketing Manager at Cognex Corporation
Jose Campos - Founder of Rapidinnovation

Revealing Design Treasures from The Amazon
On its surface, Amazon.com just seems like a large e-commerce site, albeit a successful one. Its design isn't flashy, nor is it much to write home about. But deep within its pages are hidden secrets -- secrets that every designer should know about.
If one looks closely at what the team at Amazon has built, it's filled with innovative functionality and clever designs, all of which creates a delightful experience for its users and directly produces regular profits for its shareholders. But not all is perfect. Some design changes in the last few years have not been the success that the team had hoped for. Amazon's exceptional qualities and imperfections are critical knowledge for any designer that wants to dig deep into what makes the site tick.
In this entertaining presentation, Jared will share some of UIE's latest research into the hidden treasures of (the) Amazon. You'll learn:
+ The simple Yes/No question that increased revenues by more than $1 billion
+ The elegant subtlety of Amazon's security system
+ Why Amazon's business model is more than meets the eye (and why designers need to care)
+ The wins and losses that Amazon has had with social media functionality
About the speaker
Jared M. Spool, Founding Principal
If youâve ever seen Jared speak about usability, you know that heâs probably the most effective, knowledgeable communicator on the subject today. What you probably donât know is that he has guided the research agenda and built User Interface Engineering into the largest research organization of its kind in the world. Heâs been working in the field of usability and design since 1978, before the term "usability" was ever associated with computers.
Jared spends his time working with the research teams at the company, helps clients understand how to solve their design problems, explains to reporters and industry analysts what the current state of design is all about, and is a top-rated speaker at more than 20 conferences every year. He is also the conference chair and keynote speaker at the annual User Interface Conference, is on the faculty of the Tufts University Gordon Institute, and manages to squeeze in a fair amount of writing time.

Season 2, episode 3
Get up early and work on your side projects with some like-minded geeks!
TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference.
So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. Or, if you can't be there in person, join us on IRC at #techcoffee on freenode. One commit a week is all we ask.
