PDX11 is proud to welcome Ken Westin, CEO of ActiveTrak, and Jeff Martens, CEO of CPUsage to lead Roundtable #2 - The Psychology of Starting Up!
On Tuesday, March 27th from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m, we will hold our second of the 2012 PDX11 Roundtable Series. This sessionâs topic is âThe Psychology of Starting Upâ â a first hand exploration of two different experiences that led to our speakers' successful launches.
The Portland startup scene is full of activity, talent, and new concepts â if youâve got these but need a candid, firsthand account on how/when/why to leave the tarmac and launch your startup, this Roundtableâs for you. Refreshments will be served, and there are a limited number of seats. Please RSVP to Tamsen Galloway to reserve a spot at the roundtable. Details will be listed at www.calagator.org.
About the PDX11 Roundtable Series:
The PDX11 Roundtable Series is an answer to the startup communityâs request for a roundtable-style, firsthand interaction with software leaders who have expertise in specific topics. These will be held on a regular basis throughout the year.
For more information about the PDX11 Network, please visit www.pdx11.org
Please RSVP to [email protected] to reserve a spot at the roundtable.

OEN CEO Roundtable: How to build great teams by having a rigorous HR personnel management system
Roll back
| description |
In this OEN CEO Roundtable, Nitin will talk about the HR philosophy, culture, policies, and tactics that allowed Saber to grow from 20 employees to 1200 with zero voluntary separations from the company in its first 8 years. More importantly, 100% of the management team that drove this growth were promoted from within (programmers to executives) thus keeping our compensation and recruiting costs amongst the lowest in the industry.
Open only to CEOs or Presidents of currently operating companies that have employees. Boxed lunch will be served. This program is limited to 12 participants, and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Who should attend this event: CEOs and VP of HR for current and future high growth companies though any CEO that wants to build a company with a fabulous performance based culture would benefit from this event.
To register for this event, please call Kirsten Ringen, OEN Director of Membership Services, at 503-222-2270 x 113.
Speaker: Nitin Khanna, CEO, MergerTech
Nitin Khanna, CEO, MergerTech, a boutique investment bank that facilitates mergers and acquisitions for technology companies with less than $100MM in revenue. Prior to MergerTech, Nitin was the founder, Chairman and CEO of Saber Corp. a Portland based national firm focused on providing technology solutions to government clients. Nitin started Saber in July 1998 and grew it to $120MM in revenues by 2007. The company was sold to EDS in December 2007 for $460MM. Currently he is very active in the Portland tech entrepreneurial community as an advisor, investor, mentor, and teacher.

About ZH Brewing Company
The founders at ZH Brewing Company have a simple concept: foster a community built around a brewery restaurant. Both the beers and the restaurant have their roots in German brewing and culinary traditions. ZH Brewing Company customers will enjoy the same feeling of belonging in the family-friendly restaurant as they would in the traditional houses of Germany. The restaurant will offer a very fresh and handmade menu, with foods procured from local suppliers. Our goal with the brewery is to make the best German-style beers on the West Coast; the best Gluten-Free beer in the US; quaffable, session-style American beers that still interest the beer connoisseurs; avant-garde beers or recreations of extinct World beer styles to put our beers in an historical context.

Join the PDX11 Mentor Network and the co-founders of OpenSesame for our first 2012 Roundtable!
On Tuesday, February 28th from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m, the SAO will host our first 2012 PDX11 Roundtable. This session’s topic is “Who’s On, First?” – Building Your Startup’s Team, and will feature Josh Blank and Tom Turnbull, co-founders of Portland’s own OpenSesame.
The Portland startup scene is on fire with activity, energy and new concepts – if you’ve got these but need a candid, firsthand account on how to build the right foundation for a successful company, this Roundtable’s for you. Refreshments will be served, and there are a limited number of seats. Please RSVP to Tamsen Galloway to reserve a spot at the roundtable. Details will be listed at www.calagator.org
About the PDX11 Roundtable Series:
The PDX11 Roundtable Series is an answer to the startup community’s request for a small gathering, face to face interaction with software leaders who have expertise in specific topics. These will be held on a regular basis throughout the year.
For more information about the PDX11 Network, please visit www.pdx11.org
Please RSVP to [email protected] to reserve a spot at the roundtable.

AgilePDX sponsors: "The Mikado Method, or how to behead the legacy beast" workshop
Roll back
| description |
For any code base there comes a time when you want (or need) to change it. If your changes are extensive, itâs easy to get lost in a jungle of dependencies or on a sea of broken code. Ultimately, you might just give up and shove it away under the legacy label. Instead of doing that, use "The Mikado Method," a systematic approach to reclaim your code. The method helps you visualize, prepare, and perform business-value focused changes, while delivering, and without having a broken code-base in the process. It enhances team communication, collaboration and learning, and helps individuals stay on track.
http://mikadomethod.wordpress.com/book/
For: Lead developers, architects, programming coaches, or anyone who wants to get some serious hands-on practice on how to work their way out of messy code while keeping the delivery frequency and business value focus.
Join Ola Ellnestam, founder of Agical.se and author of The Mikado Method, as he leads the group through exploring techniques for restructuring difficult-t0-work-with code. Ola likes to combine people, technology and business which is best done with simple means and flexible processes. More than that he likes to share his knowledge and experiences because thatâs how new insights are created according to him.
Registration fee: $85 (the participation of our sponsors helps us to keep the fee as low as possible)

Season 6, episode 3
Get up early and work on your side projects with some like-minded geeks!
TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference.
So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. Or, if you can't be there in person, join us on IRC at #techcoffee on FreeNode. One commit a week is all we ask.

Hillsboro, OR 97124
Map: http://binged.it/IntelHF3Map
WHEN:
Tuesday 2/7/2012

6:30 p.m. Presentation
~8:30 p.m. After Words at On the Border Mexican Grill
WHO:
Adron Hall is CTO of Three Step Solutions, working with startups and small businesses to get the right architecture, build and deployed product into place. He is one of the Node PDX organizers (RSVP now - it is next weekend!) In his day job Adron works on enterprise systems for Russell Investments. Adron's blog is at http://compositecode.com/, and his Twitter handle is @adron.
TOPIC:
In this presentation we jump straight into the middle of web development using VS 2010 with AWS Toolkit as our primary deployment tooling. The tooling enables single step deployment to one, or 5,000 instances, in various ways, with multitudes of networking options, traffic distributions, etc. At the end I demo a sample application, using several of the Enterprise Tools & Open Source Tools many .NET Developers use, I deploy an application live.
