I have done Toastmasters already.. why Speaking Made Easy?
Speaking Made Easy:
*Is supportive rather than corrective - this is about connecting with your audience & being authentic with yourself
*Cultivates win-win interpersonal relations - realize your audience is supportive and benign
*Offers valuable & practical results - naturally pausing & being silent while engaged with your audience is ok and even powerful!
*Helps you create a sense of Well Being when in the center of attention

Science Fiction Reader Series
Roll back
| description |

The next Portland event will be held on Monday, October 15 and will be hosted by New York Times bestselling author Seanan McGuire, accompanied by Jay Lake and M.K. Hobson.
The greater Pacific Northwest is home to Ursula K. Le Guin, Kay Kenyon, Jay Lake, Nancy Kress, Brent Weeks, Ted Chiang and Ramona Quimby. Although Ramona isn’t known for her Science Fiction and Fantasy escapades, the rest are, and will be celebrated as part of the Pacific Northwest Reading Series. These free quarterly events provide the Northwest Science Fiction and Fantasy community a chance to gather, network and enjoy readings from local authors.
The 2012 series brings exciting authors directly to you through a series of readings held in local venues. After the success of our Portland pilot program, SFWA is adding a new venue in Seattle.
Each event starts with notes from the host, a leading local author, who has selected two of their favorite writers to complete the evening’s theme. In turn, each is given time to read from their latest work, interpreting and explaining their concepts and vision. In addition, space is provided for networking and conversation. |

Agile Metrics â Velocity is Not the Goal
Roll back
| description |

Agile Metrics â Velocity is Not the Goal
Michael âDocâ Norton, LeanDog
Velocity is one of the most common metrics usedâand one of the most commonly misusedâon agile projects. Velocity is simply a measurement of speed in a given directionâthe rate at which a team is delivering toward a product release. As with a vehicle en route to a particular destination, increasing the speed may appear to ensure a timely arrival. However, that assumption is dangerous because it ignores the risks with higher speeds. And while itâs easy to increase a vehicleâs speed, where exactly is the accelerator on a software team? Michael âDocâ Norton walks us through the Hawthorne Effect and Goodhartâs Law to explain why setting goals for velocity can actually hurt a projectâs chances of success. Take a look at what can negatively impact velocity, ways to stabilize fluctuating velocity, and methods to improve velocity without the risks. Leave with a toolkit of additional metrics that, coupled with velocity, give a better view of the projectâs overall health.
A promoter and practitioner of agile since 1999, Michael âDocâ Norton (@DocOnDev) is an agile coach and a partner with LeanDog. Docâs twenty-plus years of software development have provided him with experience on a wide range of topics. As a member of LeanDog, living in Wadsworth, OH, Doc provides coaching, mentoring, training, and delivery in agile/XP/lean software development techniques. Doc is immediately suspicious of anyone who declares expertise in a single programming language or methodology. He is passionate about helping others become better developers, working with teams to improve delivery, and emphasizing software craftsmanship.

PLUG AT: Embedded Linux and GPL compliance
Roll back
| description |
Portland Linux/Unix Group Advanced Topics:
Embedded Linux and GPL compliance. How not to make a mess of things by Beth Flanagan of Intel
As Linux becomes more and more common in the consumer device market, the number of GPL violations found by various compliance organizations have increased dramatically. We'll discuss how violations occur, what to do if you find yourself in violation and how the Yocto Project and OpenEmbedded-Core helps you to avoid a costly GPL violation action.
Beth 'pidge' Flanagan is the maintainer of the licensing infrastructure for the Yocto Project and OpenEmbedded-Core, maintainer of the yocto-autobuilder and build and release engineer for the Yocto Project. She has spoken on a wide range of topics over the years, from GPL compliance in the embedded world to open source firearms. She works full time on the Yocto Project and OpenEmbedded-Core for Intel's Open Source Technologies Center.
Many will head to the Lucky Lab on Hawthorne after the meeting. |

This will be a casual get together for women who want to hack on projects with or around other women. All types of projects (software and hardware), languages, platforms and experience levels are welcome.
Don't have anything to work on? Come, and we'll help you find a project!
What you should bring:
* Your laptop or other equipment
* Your lovely self!
We'll provide:
* the space, including lots of seating and tables
* internet
* some snacks, including gluten-free and vegan options.
Our goal is to support local women hackers (and aspiring hackers) by providing a safe, welcoming environment in which you can connect with and learn from each other.
We're kid-friendly, too, so feel free to bring your children with you.
Women Who Hack is open to all self-identified women and genderqueer persons, as well as accompanied children of all genders.
All participants of Women Who Hack agree to follow the <a href="http://citizencodeofconduct.org/">Citizen Code of Conduct</a>.
Questions? Get in touch: [email protected].

AgilePDX - Continuous Delivery - Jez Humble
Roll back
| description |
Bio:
[Jez Humble](http://continuousdelivery.com) is a Principal at ThoughtWorks Studios, and co-author of the Jolt Award winning [Continuous Delivery](http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0321601912?tag=contindelive-20), published in Martin Fowlerâs Signature Series. He has worked with a variety of platforms and technologies, consulting for non-profits, telecoms, financial services, and online retail companies. His focus is on helping organisations deliver valuable, high-quality software frequently and reliably through implementing effective engineering practices.
Details and Pizza:
Many thanks to New Relic for covering the speaker costs!
This event is free and is at Puppet Labs. It begins at 6:30 pm with pizza, sponsored by PNSQC (Many thanks to both Puppet Labs and PNSQC for supporting agile in Portland).
The program starts at 7:00 pm.
After the program you're invited to join us for a no-host gathering at a nearby brewpub for further discussion of launching Agile Projects.
Talk description:
Businesses rely on getting valuable new software into the hands of users as fast as possible, while making sure that they keep their production environments stable. Continuous Delivery is a revolutionary and scalable approach to software delivery that enables any team, including teams within enterprise IT organizations, to achieve rapid, reliable releases through better collaboration between developers, testers, DBAs and operations, and automation of the build, deploy, test and release process.
Iâll start by discussing the value of CD to the business, inspired by the lean startup movement. Iâll then present the principles and practices involved in continuous delivery, including value stream mapping, the deployment pipeline, acceptance test driven development, zero-downtime releases, and incremental development. Iâll cover how CD is enabled by an ecosystem including Devops, cloud computing, agile testing, and continuous deployment. |

Portland Linux/Unix Group: UEFI Secure Boot and Open Source
Roll back

UEFI Secure Boot and Open Source. It's not a 'general war against computation' by Vincent Zimmer
As 2012 platform firmware embraces UEFI 2.3.1 and ACPI5.0 support, the ability to interoperate with UEFI Secure Boot is imperative. This poses a unique challenge for open software that may not come pre-installed on the platform. With UEFI Secure Boot, though, infrastructure has been put in place to preserve openness, owner choice and control in addition to mitigating concerns of malware targeting the platform. This talk will provide a history of UEFI Secure Boot, an overview of the implementation, deployment practices, and details on the engagement with the open source community.
Vincent Zimmer is a Principal Engineer with Intel Corporation. He has been working on various platform, networking, trusted computing and security technologies around EFI since 1999 and platform firmware since 1992. Vincent has spoken in various forums on this topic, co-authored 3 books, 10 papers, and several specifications in this area.
Many will break for refreshments at the Lucky Lab NW at 1945 NW Quimby after the meeting
The Portland Linux/Unix Group (PLUG) is a group of enthusiasts dedicated to teaching and learning about Linux, Unix and related projects. There is no membership fee to join and we welcome people of all levels of experience. PLUG has met since 1994 and hosts monthly General and Advanced Topics presentations plus a hands-on support Clinic. |
