Build a Cloud Day
Roll back
| description |
Build a Cloud Day" will be dedicated to teaching users how to build and manage a cloud computing environment using free and open source software. The program is designed to expose attendees to the concepts and best practices around deploying cloud computing infrastructure.
Attendees should expect to learn how to deploy a cloud computing environment using CloudStack and other cloud infrastructure tools including those from OpenStack, Puppet Labs and Arista Networks that automate server and network configuration for building highly available cloud computing environments.
Tentative schedule is as follows. [We are consistently adding additional cloud computing experts from the open source community to broaden the program.]
9:00 - 9:15 - Welcome - Mark Hinkle, VP of Community, Cloud.com
We'll kick off the day reviewing the program with attendees and gathering information so we can tailor the program to best address the needs and experience level of the audience.
9:15 - 10:30 - Build Your Cloud - Part I - Cloud.com CloudStack
David Nalley, CloudStack community manager, will give an overview of Cloudstack, an open source Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) software platform available under the GPLv3 license which enables users to build, manage and deploy compute cloud environments. The community edition is based on the latest, leading edge features and bits that the Cloud.com team of engineers are working on and is supported by an open source community.
Using CloudStack a free and open source cloud computing software to build a private cloud. During the training attendees will be instructed on how to install Cloudstack to manage virtual infrastructure in a private cloud computing configuration. At the conclusion of the Build a Private Cloud section users will have the knowledge needed to create a simple private cloud computing environment.
10:30- 12:00 - Build Your Cloud - Part II - OpenStack
OpenStack is a collection of open source technologies delivering a massively scalable cloud operating system. OpenStack is currently developing two interrelated projects: OpenStack Compute and OpenStack Object Storage. OpenStack Compute is software to provision and manage large groups of virtual private servers, and OpenStack Object Storage is software for creating redundant, scalable object storage using clusters of commodity servers to store terabytes or even petabytes of data. OpenStack was founded by Rackspace and NASA, and now has the support of more than 50 organizations building an open cloud standard.
12:00 - 1:00: Lunch
We will break for lunch after the morning session.
1:00 - 2:15 - Automatic Configuration of Your Cloud with Puppet
The shift to cloud-based services has dramatically altered the IT landscape as we know it. Enterprise infrastructure borders have expanded beyond the firewall and now include hosted applications and infrastructure hosted in public and private clouds. Puppet helps DevOps teams meet their common objectives, creating a seamless IT infrastructure across departments, reducing cost and increasing productivity.
This training section will cover deploying cloud infrastructure automatically using Puppet, an open source configuration management and automation tool. The session will cover the following topics:
Configuring Puppet and Puppetmaster
Resource Types and the Resource Abstration Layer
Virtual Resources, Exported Resources and Stored Configs
Best practices for Automated Deployment
2:15 - 3:15 - Building Clouds the Devops Way
Noted cloud blogger, host of the DevOps Cafe podcast and VP of Services for cloud services company DTO solutions, John M. Willis, will explain the DevOps philosphy of rapid, structured deployment of cloud infrastructure using open source tools like Chef, Puppet, Maven, Jenkins and RunDeck.
RunDeck is cross-platform open source software that helps you automate ad-hoc and routine procedures in data center or cloud environments. RunDeck allows you to run tasks on any number of nodes from a web-based or command-line interface. RunDeck also includes other features that make it easy to scale up your scripting efforts including: access control, workflow building, scheduling, logging, and integration with external sources for node and option data. Run Deck is sponsored by DTO Solutions.
3:30 - 4:15 Gluster Petascale Storage for the Cloud - John Mark Walker, Gluster Inc.
GlusterFS is an open source scale-out NAS solution. The software is a powerful and flexible solution that simplifies the task of managing unstructured file data whether you have a few terabytes of storage or multiple petabytes. Itâs no secret that unstructured data is growing like crazy, Gluster provides a solutions that scales capacity and performance as you need it and is an ideal fit for an IT environment that is increasingly virtualized and moving to the cloud.
There are two key ways that GlusterFS is beneficial for cloud builders:
1. Storage layer for VMs. If you're deploying Xen or KVM VMs on a private cloud, storing them on GlusterFS gives you the ability to migrate to different hypervisors, suspend and resume quickly - even on another hypervisor, scale out far beyond what other filesystems will allow, and utilize N-way replication for DR and HA
2. Unified storage layer for applications. With GlusterFS 3.3, you will be able to access your application data stores from an object (S3, Swift-style) interface, as well as a traditional POSIX-compatible NAS interface. This unified approach gives developers and admins the ability to access the same data store using a variety of different methods.
In this session, attendees will learn steps for deployment and some common use cases.
4:15 - 5:00 - Hacking Your Data Center Network Switch
Arista EOS⢠was designed to provide a foundation for the business needs of next-generation datacenters and cloud networks. EOS is a highly modular software design based on a unique multi-process state sharing architecture that completely separates networking state from the processing itself. This enables fault recovery and incremental software updates on a fine-grain process basis without affecting the state of the system.
5:00 - 6:00 Get Your Code in the Cloud and Your PaaS Over Here - The OpenShift Primer - Grant Shipley
Whether you're a seasoned Java developer looking to start hacking on EE6 or you just wrote your first line of Ruby yesterday, the cloud is turning out to be the perfect environment for developing applications in just about any modern language or framework. There are plenty of clouds and platform-as-a-services to choose from, but where to start?
Join us for an action-packed session where we'll show you how to deploy an application written in the language of your choice - Java, Ruby, PHP, Perl or Python, with the framework of your choice - EE6, CDI, Seam, Spring, Zend, Cake, Rails, Sinatra, PerlDancer or Django to the OpenShift PaaS in just minutes. And without having to rewrite your app to get it to work the way the cloud provider thinks your app should work.
Check the command-line fu of Grant Shipley as they leverage Git to onboard apps onto OpenShift Express in seconds, while also making use of the web browser do the heavy-lifting of provisioning clusters, deploying, monitoring and auto-scaling apps in OpenShift Flex. By the end of this session you'll have multiple applications running in the cloud, guaranteed, or your money back! (Did we mention OpenShift is free-as-in-beer?)
If you want to learn how the OpenShift PaaS can change everything you thought you knew about developing applications in the cloud, this session is for you! |

The event this month will be held in the private Alder Creek BC room on the 2nd floor of the Hotel Monaco, which is located at 506 S.W. Washington Street. As always, everyone is welcome, from existing Web Analytics practitioners to those with even a passing interest in the field.
Drinks and food will be graciously provided by our sponsor WebTrends and the event will begin at 6PM on Wednesday, September 28th. We will also be lucky enough to have a brief presentation from Sarah Buchanan, the Director of Digital Strategy at Roundhouse, and Justin Kistner, the Director of Social Products at Webtrends. The current schedule is as follows:
6:00 â 7:00: Networking/Drinks/Snacks
7:00 - 7:30: Open Forum/Special Presentation by Sarah Buchanan & Justin Kistner
7:30 â 9:00: More Networking/Drinks/Snacks

End of summer vacations, DjangoCon, back to school, new jobs- most of us seem to have been busy-busy this last month. Our usual "presentations & beer" style meeting didn't come together this time. In its stead, please behold the introduction of the first* PDXPython Dinner Social!
Please RSVP and join us at the DESCHUTES BREWERY at 6:30, Tuesday September 14th, where we will enjoy the promise of large tables, a varied menu for the hungry, a wide range of beverages, and spirited discussion of the Pythonic pursuits that are keeping us so busy.
I hope to see you all there! |

Part hackathon, part geek social, these biweekly meetings are a time for you to come join others for insight, inspiration or just insanity. Bring your toys for others to see, or come see what others have been painstakingly chipping away at in their spare time. Whether it's code or chips, hacking of all sorts is encouraged. But we also like to hear your crazy ideas, so please come join us and bring your willingness to share your brilliance. We'll be the kids with all the coolest stuff on the table. "Chad Casady: Going All-In with Agile at PH Tech"
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
In 2009, Performance Health Technology went "all-in" and began the
adoption of agile methodologies throughout the software development
process. In this talk, you'll take a multi-year journey with a growing
small business and experience the transition from the blissful ignorance
of cowboy-coding through the misery and despair of a sinking,
dysfunctional organization, and on to the satisfaction and exhilaration
that comes with a high-functioning agile team.
This interactive presentation is about both the pain and the fulfillment
that comes with developing software in a small business, before, during,
and after agile adoption. Developers, Business/IT Managers, Agile
Coaches, and Executives are invited to look behind the curtain to see
how PH Tech narrowly escaped from the Pit of Development Despair and
survived a Total Immersion into Agile.
Chad is the Director of Information Technology at PH Tech. His
responsibilities include all aspects of technological infrastructure and
software development, including three technology departments;
Information Systems, Business Intelligence, and Software Engineering.
When he's not talking about healthcare or technology, he's expounding
the life-giving qualities of bacon and BBQ. Buy him a beer and he'll
give you the recipe for the greatest chicken wing rub he's ever stolen.
This event is free and is at our new location, Puppet Labs. It begins at 6:30 pm with pizza, sponsored by PNSQC (Many thanks to both Puppet Labs and PNSQC for supporting agile in Portland).
The program starts at 7:00 pm.
After the program you're invited to join us for a no-host gathering at a nearby brewpub for further discussion of chicken wings and other agile conundrums.

Lean IT Leadership: Problem Solving Workshop
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Many Lean IT initiatives, such as Agile software development, and the ITIL service management framework, intend to do just that. But often something is missing â the basic discipline for teams to find and fix problems once and for all. At the heart of Lean Thinking is the Plan-Do-Check-Act problem solving process popularized by Dr. Deming over fifty years ago. This problem solving discipline is still vital today, and itâs the very core of what it means to be a âlearning organization.â
This workshop provides hands-on, experiential learning by applying this discipline to a problem that is meaningful to you:
<ul><li> First comes a little advance homework â choose a problem you and your team face, gather some data and artifacts, and speak to your stakeholders to understand their perspectives and needs</li>
<li>Then attend the workshop for a six-hour interactive walkthrough of the problem solving process, during which we will tackle the problem you and your team have brought to class</li>
<li>Take what youâve learned back to your workplace and share with your associates
<li>Then participate in a conference call with the course instructor to discuss what youâve learned, and how you and your team are addressing in a way that it stays solved</li> </ul>

âAutomotive Technology - The Next Generation Drive Systemsâ
Bob Simpson, CTO of EVDrive, will speak on how pure electric vehicles can meet or exceed the performance of internal combustion powered vehicles when powered by the right batteries in the right quantity and in the right location with the right secret sauce and systems integration to pull it all together. This presentation will discuss the design and development of electric vehicle drive systems. It will cover:
** Battery cell technology
** Motor technology
** Power sources and impact to grid,
** Comparative cost of operation and service,
** Solution to Range anxiety with electric vehicles
Bob Simpson is the CTO and Drive System Engineer for EVDrive Inc. He also has been employed since 1977 at Tektronix as a Sr. HW Design Engineer. In 2008 he designed and fabricated a full performance electric conversion of a BMW 325i. Elimination of fuel use and it's emissions was the goal but without sacrifice of performance OR economy. See www.evdrive.com for extensive build diaries.
âAgile Manufacturing: The WIKISPEED 100 mpg car"
Joe Justice, CEO of Seattle-based Wikispeed will speak about Wikispeed, an âopen sourceâ project, developing vehicles using principles from modular, lean, agile software development. The gas-powered cars, evolved from Wikispeed's entry in the Progressive Automotive X-Prize, are designed to be inexpensive, safe, efficient and fast -- made of aluminum extrusions and structural carbon fiber.
Team WIKISPEED entered a $10 Million competition to produce road legal 100+ mpg cars. They built the impossible in three months. The WIKISPEED Team will talk about Agile practices applied to enormously speed up physical manufacturing. Joe Justice leads WIKISPEED, a team of 102 volunteers in 7 countries, and walks through how their 100 MPG road car was made possible through modular design, iterative development, and Agile project management.
Joe takes a deep dive on exactly how a 100 mpg can be prototyped, validated, and brought to market by "using less stuff" and extremely quickly. Joe will use the example and of the design and development of their revolutionary 100 mpg, gasoline powered, four-seat car with a target price of $17,995.
This ground breaking work expands the agile process to design and manufacturing of the car. The talk will provide tools and take-aways for engineers and executives, in manufacturing and software, looking to improve their processes. New professionals and students can see examples of the value found in pairing, prioritized backlog driven development, and extreme programming, as they see the methodology jump from software teams to research, manufacturing, and product engineering.
Joe Justice is a Seattle-area lean-software consultant and entreprenerd, and a registered automotive manufacture since 2007. In 2010, Joeâs X Prize team, WIKISPEED, tied for 10th place in the mainstream class of the Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize, a $10 million challenge for 100+ MPGe automobiles. Joe has spoken on social web application development, project methodology, and agile best practices to audiences at Denver University, University of California Berkley, Google, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Rotary International, and others. Joe is currently on assignment at Zynga and CEO of WIKISPEED.
