This is an exploration of vulnerability through conversation, rooted in a literary work but powered/guided by our own experiences. Is vulnerability something we should strive for? What would be the benefits and challenges of engaging this experience? What does it even mean to be vulnerable? If you're curious about any of these things, you can find more information on our webpage, including Brené Brown's TED Talk.
Agenda 3:30-5:00pm January 30th: Discuss Brené Brown's TED Talk, and start the book Daring Greatly up to page 31, from "What It Means to Dare Greatly", to "Looking Inside Our Culture of 'Never Enough'"

The Portland Linux/Unix Group Advanced Topics meeting
Recoupling Computer Science and Computing
A talk and roundtable discussion
There is no question that hybrid telecommunication/computing appliances like those running iOS and Android have put more open source software into the hands of users than any other effort to date but vendors and carriers consistently choose user control over user freedom. While many users and vendors will argue that "people want their systems to 'just work'", intentional and unintentional decoupling of the user computing experiences from the underlying computer science is the norm, despite the fact that developers and systems administrators are equally lazy and "want their systems to 'just work'".
Because no technical barrier exists between these two experiences of a given system, this talk will explore the historic and modern systems that provide the best balance of user and developer experience and open up to a roundtable discussion of other such systems and how to bridge these two experiences and foster computer science in society.
Please be prepared to talk about your experiences, particularly on platforms like Android and web frameworks which can offer full-stack access to sources yet deliver a competitive user experience.
See you there!
Many will break for the Lucky Lab on Hawthorne afterwards. |

Treating the three categories of IP (trademark, copyright, and design patent) as individual strategies is one way of protecting your IP however these same three categories can be used synergistically to create a cohesive IP policy that will provide greater protection overall.
Learn from Craig Morris, Managing Attorney for Trademark Outreach United States Patent and Trademark Office as he kicks off the Trademark, Copyright, and Design Patent Boot Camp on February 14th. Craig will give a general overview identifying the differences between the three categories as well as domain names and business registrations. He will discuss the basic process and strategy for protecting each, review basic considerations for each, and discuss how they should be used collectively for maximum protection.
Additional Topics:
â¢To register or not to register
â¢How to enforce?
â¢Importance of selecting a strong mark, that is, both federally registrable and legally protectable
â¢Whether an attorney should be used when doing the initial search
â¢Potential grounds for the USPTO to refuse registration
â¢What may happen if another trademark owner believes it has stronger rights
â¢How to avoid scams perpetrated by companies the request fees for services not required by the USPTO
Concluding Craig Morrisâs overview there will be three breakout sessions which will focus on how each category applies to one product, i.e. iPod, Nike shoes, Coke bottle, etc. The outcome of the sessions is to demonstrate how a design patent can and should be linked to trademark and copyright.
Small Group Breakout Sessions
Design Patents Session:
Leads: Katie Maksym, Nike and Brenna Leggard, Lane Powell LLP
â¢How best to cover a product design with a design patent
â¢What strategies can be employed to broaden and maintain coverage through small design iterations?
â¢Strategies for extending coverage for functional features through the use of decorative features
â¢Aspects of the design patent process that can tie in trademark or copyrights and how this can provide enhanced coverage of the product
Trademark Session:
Leads: Jay Rafter, Stoel Rives LLP and Nate Moceri, Stoel Rives LLP
â¢How best to integrate trademark into the actual product design
â¢Can the design itself be a trademark?
â¢Explanation of product configuration trade dress
â¢What strategies can be employed to broaden coverage and maintain coverage over time?
â¢Aspects of trademark that can tie in design or copyrights and how this can provide enhanced coverage of the product
Copyright Session:
Leads: Jay Smith-Hill, Lane Powell LLP
â¢Now that you have a design and trademark, how do you tell the world about it?
â¢How can the use of copyrights extend the reach of a design over multiple media outlets (website, marcom, YouTube videos, etc.)?
â¢Aspects of copyright that can tie in design or trademark and how this can provide enhanced coverage of the product
Who should attend?

Roll back

Hey, Whatâs the Big Data?
How business intelligence is determining design, development, and marketing decisions
Itâs time to say goodbye to old school analytics, and hello to big data. Big data involves huge data sets, coming in at different speeds, from all directions. Everyday, we create 2.5 quintillion bytes of data online. All that data (a quintillion has 30 zeros) comes from social media, digital pictures, purchase transactions, and elsewhere on the web.
This kind of data sinks traditional database systems. To analyze the data, we need fancier systems. Thatâs why IBM Watson won Jeopardy, but Siri continues to drive us crazy with her analytical shortcomings.
Predictive analytics can figure out how to land on Mars, but it cannot predict who will buy a Mars bar. What gives? Luckily, marketing automation tools from companies like Eloqua and Marketo are changing the game.
Join us for a dive into the sea of data. This panel examines how understanding and working with data will optimize business actions in real time.
You will:
â¢Learn how humanizing data will help maintain a competitive advantage
â¢Find out why big data isnât just for big companies
â¢Hear case studies of companies who are successfully interpreting data to predict the needs of their customers, increase purchases and save money
â¢Listen to thought leaders and get ahead of the big data wave
Panelists Include:
â¢Hillary Ervin, Marketing at Tripwire, Inc.
â¢David Steinberg, CEO at The Steinberg Group
â¢Bob Newell, Director at Information Builders (In from New York)
â¢Mike Smitheman, VP of Marketing at GoodData (In from San Francisco)

Portland Perl Mongers â Sane Database Change Management with Sqitch
Roll back
| description |
speaker: David Wheeler
<p>
SQL change management is <em>hard.</em> Most âmigrationâ-style implementations require opaque naming conventions, prefer DSLs that cover a fraction of SQL, and require duplication of code for simple changes to existing functions. Such does not have to be. And now itâs not
</p>
<p>
Introducing Sqitch, simple SQL change management that doesnât suck. Sqitch doesnât care what programming language your app is written in. It has no opinions as to what database to use or what its schema should look like. And it doesnât require sequentially-named migration scripts or the use of any DSL other than SQL. Sqitch lets you to write SQL migration scripts that target your database, and provides a simple, unintrusive interface for specifying dependencies, so that it can run things in the proper order.
</p>
<p>
So come to this talk to learn all about Sqitch: How it works, where to get it, and how to get the most out of managing database deployments.
</p>
<p>
David Wheeler is Senior Data Architect at iovation and an associate at <a href="http://www.pgexperts.com/">PGExperts</a>. He is responsible, among other things, for <a href="http://pgxn.org/">PGXN</a>, <a href="http://pgtap.org/">pgTAP</a>, <a href="http://www.designsceneapp.com/">DesignScene</a>, and way too many <a href="https://metacpan.org/author/DWHEELER">CPAN modules</a>. He lives in Portland unless heâs traveling with his family.
</p>
As usual, the meeting will be followed by social hour at the Lucky Lab Brew Pub. |
