This month's topic: Writing a Database Application Without Knowing a Word of SQL (a.k.a. POJOs, JPA, and ORM)

We will discuss building a Java Swing application (installed or web start) that saves its data POJOs (Plain Old Java Objects) into SQL databases across the net (mySQL) or to a local embedded database (Derby) by using the JPA (Java Persistance API) and ORM (Object Relational Mapping) via Toplink or EclipseLink.

You will see that REAL applications get to benefit from technology that typically lives in the world of Hibernate and Web Apps. You gotta love portable SQL database data persistance without building any tables or writing any SQL!

GPC4J is a computing paradigm that breaks a partitionable problem into GridPackets, which are routed, processed and re-assembled into the solution to the original problem. This presentation will cover the use of the system and design of the project's web application. The application is built using REST (Jersey), Maven, Hibernate, JPA, MySQL and GlassFish.

Rob Wultsch, a recent addition to Facebook's Database Operations team, will compare and contrast the Facebook deployment with his previous work with another large deployment of open source databases. In this db-agnostic talk, he'll go over: the bizarre becoming ordinary, the many types of infrastructure that do not scale and what does and does not work when building a DBA team.

Before joining Facebook, Rob worked for a very large hosting company as a database administrator and a newspaper as a web developer. In his free time he enjoys riding his motorcycle and bicycle and fantasizes about moving to Portland.

Description: "Drupal is one of the more widely adopted CMSs. It is open source and has a huge developer base. However, I rarely hear a DBA mention having to administer Drupal with anything but frustration and pessimism. At Acquia, we have thousands of Amazon instances running Drupal databases. Most sites are quite different from each other, but some basic principles apply to all. Being the DBA for Drupal does not have to be a negative experience! In addition to covering the generic Drupal MySQL configuration tips, I will cover optimization methods for specific features like semaphores, sessions, Views, and the various Drupal caching layers. I’ll also cover the use of query cache in the Drupal context, which while normally frowned upon in the MySQL community, is often beneficial in maintaining a healthy Drupal site. "

Memory usage is something that we as developers have to be aware of. Ever debugging a memory issue and find that your once small dataset has ballooned out of proportion? And instead of dealing with the issue, you opt for upping the memory limit? Iterators can be the answer but they require a lot of code and can be very difficult to understand at a glance. Thankfully since PHP 5.5 Generators help us create and manage what would be complex iterators with simple syntax sugar. In this talk I will go over some of the ways you can implement generators and cure your memory bloat.

Using the Null Object Pattern

When you develop OO PHP applications, you'll eventually get the error message "PHP Notice: Trying to get property of non-object". You can add a conditional to check if an object is null. There is however a better way. Null Object Pattern is a design pattern that helps you to simplify your application logic. The Null Object patthern removes the need to check for an object vs null by using Polymorphism. I'll demonstrate how it works with generic PHP code, and how you can apply it to work with database results.

Ever wanted your code to accept payments, not just through e-commerce, but in-person credit card swipe, dips and taps? Now you can! Tristan will be hands-on with how to add ecommerce to your site, build a PHP based point of sale system, and talk about other offerings Square has for PHP developers. 

Tristan works on the Developer Platform team at Square, and got his start in web development working on PHP sites for university student groups. When he isn't at work, Tristan grows backyard succulents in beautiful Oakland, California.

PHP TestFest seeks to create more PHP core contributors by introducing PHP programmers to the PHP language test suite, teaching them how to write phpttests. From September through December, 2017, groups worldwide will meet physically or virtually to learn how to write and contribute phpt tests. You don’t have to be a C genius—in fact, you don’t need to know C at all to contribute.1 If you can write a few lines of PHP, you can write a phpt test.

PHP TestFest wouldn’t be complete without prizes. We’re still working out the details, so we’ll announce prizes and how to win them soon.

This kick-off meeting will be a mini-hackathon which will include information on setting up your environment and how to write and contribute phpt tests. We'll be able to continue working on our test together in the slack channel and at other meetups, so you'll want to get started with us now!!!

Kurtis Holsapple presents Procedural Code to Testable Code

During this talk we'll look at how we can transform existing PHP code to cover it with a few unit tests. If you've never written a test, or want to see how we can cover a legacy code base with a brand new test suite, we'll be doing it live! We'll start with a basic contact form and build out a brand new testing setup based on PHP Unit and Composer, and when we're done we'll try to build out additional functionality all covered by unit tests.

Let's build out a site with no serverside processing at all. Static sites are nothing more than static files put up on a server that doesn't need any serverside runtimes. That means that you can host your site on places like Github Pages, AWS S3, or any other cheap hosting options. This month I am going to be talking about my current work on sharding large mysql databases with Vitess. My team has been on a journey towards splitting our largest mysql databases and I want to share my experiences and lessons learned. We are going to look at the problems and possible solutions to scaling reads and writes in relational databases.

Vitess is an open source project born at youtube to scale their largest and most critical databases. It has been adopted in as a Cloud Native Compute Foundation incubator project. With PostgreSQL on the medium-term road map, let’s take a look at what we have been able to do with mysql.

Hi its me Grant. I work on the database engineering team at New Relic. I’ve been using Postgres in production since 9.2. I co-organize the Postgres user group in Portland with Mark Wong.

This month's topic: Grid Packet Computing for Java (GPC4J)

GPC4J is a computing paradigm that breaks a partitionable problem into GridPackets, which are routed, processed and re-assembled into the solution to the original problem. This presentation will cover the use of the system and design of the project's web application. The application is built using REST (Jersey), Maven, Hibernate, JPA, MySQL and GlassFish.

Speaker: Lyle Harris

Lyle Harris is a Software Engineer working in World Wide Operations at Sun Microsystems, where he develops internal Java applications for automation and customer-facing web applications.

PJUG meetings start with some time to eat and socialize (pizza and beverages are provided), followed by the featured speaker, then Q&A, discussion, sometimes a drawing to give away swag. :)

Though we like knowing how many people to expect, you don't have to RSVP, on Upcoming or otherwise. Go ahead and just show up!
