WIN with ChickTech: Girl Rising STEM Event
Intel Hawthorn Farms 3 (HF3) Campus

Did you ever think you could change the world by pursuing your dreams? But how do you get there and reach your full potential? What does education has to do with all of this? Women can transform their lives by jumping in and getting involved in their dreams. At this event, you’ll see an inspiring movie called Girl Rising.

Want to understand the basics behind all the cool gadgets we use every day? It all starts with circuits! And we’ll have a fun activity for beginners.

What is this event? It’s a combination movie showing and hands-on activity. It’s a chance for high school girls to meet women in technology and a chance for women in technology to be inspired by high school girls!

Who's invited? We’re excited to have an Intel WIN and ChickTech event! If you identify with any of the following, we’d love to have you:

Current and past ChickTech: High School participants Current and past ChickTech volunteers ChickTech supporters Intel WIN members Future ChickTech volunteers and supporters

Why should you come? It’s free! There will be snacks.

But seriously, this is an event to watch and reflect on women’s empowerment in tech by watching Girl Rising. We’ll also have an educational (and fun, we promise!) hands-on activity and create your very own circuit.

If you’re a ChickTech: High School participant, we’ll do our best to provide transportation to the event, free of charge.

Who’s hosting? Intel WIN (Women in Intel Network) Oregon will be co-hosting this event with ChickTech. Intel is graciously hosting the event, and ChickTech is working hard to plan and run the event.

Public Transportation HF3 is a 7 minute walk from the Hawthorn Farm MAX Station on the blue line and 4 minutes from the nearest bus stops on Cornell Rd on route 48.

ChickTech Imposter Syndrome Workshop
New Relic

More more info and to RSVP, please visit the eventbrite link above. Cost of the workshop is $15 for students and $20 for community members.

Have you ever felt like a fraud? Do you attribute your successes to luck or chance? Do you feel inadequate despite evidence to the contrary and worry that others will “find you out”? If you answered yes to any of these questions - guess what, you are not alone! You merely have a case of . . . Imposter Syndrome.

What is Imposter Syndrome? Come join us for an evening and find out! We will kick off the night with dinner and our Keynote speaker, Vanessa Van Edwards (http://www.scienceofpeople.com/about-vanessa-van-edwards/).

We will then break into small groups to discuss how Imposter Syndrome affects us in our everyday lives and do activities that help build confidence in the value we bring to the table. Still not convinced? Tina Fey, Maya Angelou, and Sheryl Sandberg have all admitted to feeling like imposters in their careers at some point. If these "low-achieving" women can overcome the thickets of Imposter Syndrome so can you! We hope to see you at the workshop!

Please note, although this is a female-centered workshop, everyone is welcome to attend.

Please see ChickTech's inclusion policy for more detail (http://chicktech.org/about-us/inclusion-policy/).

Dinner and supplies are included in the cost of this workshop.

FutureTalk with Liz Abinante and Janice Levenhagen
New Relic

Diversity and Education in Tech

› Please RSVP via Eventbrite HERE

Programming, Education, and the American Dream

The learn to code movement has popularized the idea that coding is a skill everyone can learn. It's the American dream: learn the desirable skill and you'll succeed financially. Liz will discuss the history of the American Dream, how new programming education endeavors have repackaged it, and how the lack of awareness and analysis of this privileged rhetoric is damaging our culture and workforce.

Liz Abinante is an engineer living in Portland working for New Relic. Previously, she has served as co-leader for the Chicago chapter of Girl Develop It, where she taught and organized programming classes for women and minorities. She is infectiously enthusiastic about web development, teaching, learning, and feminism. She enjoys knitting, writing knitting programs and patterns, and hacking away on interesting problems. Her greatest dream in life is to spend her entire day surrounded by puppies while coding.

Women in Today's Tech

At ChickTech, we're often asked exactly why women are so underrepresented in technology. This is a hard question to answer, because it rarely is just one thing. It's a complex mix that we often call "death by a thousand cuts". Janice will guide us through the stats on technical women in various national and local tech companies and then take a dive into anecdotes that help to illustrate some of the reasons why women leave technology at twice the rate of men.

Janice Levenhagen is the Executive Director of ChickTech. She has a BS in Computer Engineering from Oregon State University and an MBA from Willamette University. She believes strongly that the diversity and strengths that women can bring will push high tech to even more impressive heights. Her inspiration for creating ChickTech came from her own experiences in computer engineering and the realization that the percentage of women in engineering isn’t going to get higher by itself.

› Doors will open at 5:30 for a 30-minute networking happy hour! The food, beer and drinks are provided by Bellagios and New Relic.

› The presentation will begin right at 6p.

› FutureTalk is brought to you by New Relic in collaboration with TAO

› Stay tuned for the latest developments and updates on this and upcoming events by joining our Meetup group, New Relic FutureTalks PDX, and following us on Twitter @newrelic.

ChickTech Problem-Storming for Nonprofits
Thetus Corporation

NOTE: This is now a 1 day event. We hope you can join us.

Let's use our skills to make our community a better place for women and girls!

Are you a woman interested in brainstorming and creating solutions for a nonprofit? Well, we have the event for you! We're bringing in nonprofits who are focused on women and girls (or issues that women and girls encounter) who have something that they've been struggling with...and our goal is to have a viable solution for each of them by the end of the weekend!

Do I have the skills to attend?

  • Are you a women who is 15 years of age or older?
  • Are you a programmer?
  • Are you an interface designer?
  • Are you a manager?
  • Are you a teacher (either officially or not)?
  • Do you have experience with psychology?
  • Are you an artist?
  • Are you passionate about helping non-profits?

If you answered yes to any of those, then yes! You should. We are looking to have teams of women with diverse backgrounds. If you are under 15, let us know and we will see if we can work something out.

Why should I attend?

  • Altruism. Community-Mindedness. You'd like to help the local community with your skills.
  • Learn from your group members. You'll be on a diverse team of women. We are sure that you'll learn a lot from each other!
  • Learn about the non-profits. Portland has a great nonprofit community and this event will help you get in touch with some of them.
  • Help fundraise for ChickTech K-12 events. By paying for your participation, you are not only getting this experience (and food for days!), you are also helping to make our K-12 events free for participants. Thank you in advance for your support!
  • Childcare is provided.
  • Delicious food is provided. Eat up!

What are we doing, exactly?

You will be in a group of women working on a project for a local nonprofit. The projects are listed below under the Nonprofits section.

Each project will have a tech component, but we're looking to create a team with diverse skills to address the needs of the nonprofit. Each group will have a ChickTech or Thetus volunteer to help out. Each group will have a representative from the nonprofit to answer any questions. At the end of the weekend, we want to have a viable solution for the non-profit.

Can men attend?

YES! We are looking for supportive techie guys to help provide childcare for the event in order to break yet another stereotype. We are hoping to have some fun, hands-on activities for the kids too, depending on ages and age ranges.

Can I attend for free?

YES! We are offering a sliding scale because we do not want cost to be a barrier for anyone to attend. If you can afford any of the cost options, please help us out! This will help us cover the costs of this event. Any extra money goes to funding our K-12 programs to ensure that they remain free for participants.

Event Schedule

Friday: 6:30p - 9p, hors d'oeuvres, choose projects, meet teams! Saturday: 9:30a - 5:30p, breakfast, work with teams, lunch, more work! Sunday: 9:30a - 5:30p, breakfast, work, lunch, work, present (not the noun, the verb)!

Help us by spreading the word!

Skills needed (including but not limited to): nonprofit fundraising, marketing, designer, game development, user experience designer

Problem: We're at the stage where we're fleshing out our ideas, and we would love some help integrating the functionality of Asana and Google Docs/Drive as a first step. This tool will be used to coordinate NPOs in both everyday situations and emergencies where cooperation between NPOs will save lives. Skills needed (including but not limited to): Front end web design, user interface design, business, project management, back-end programming, nonprofit experience, graphic design

Best of all, you'll get to print each session’s project in one of five plastic colors to keep!

Technology that will be used: Autodesk Fusion360 and 3D Printers

The Instructor: 3D printing designer Mazuir Ross (Maz) Maz sculpted the 3D printed cow Veronin for Urban Farmer PDX! To learn more about the designer check out her website at mazuirross.com. She is also in partnership with Attero, who focuses on the hardware side of 3D printing. You can find information about Maz and Attero’s operation at mazandattero.xyz.

Session 1, August 25th: Make a Custom Charm The first session will overview the basics needed for successfully designing 3D printing output, particularly FFF/FDM printing. In the lesson we will create a snap-on custom charm for beer bottles/wine glasses. The creation of the snap-on charm will focus on basics of sketching and creating geometry from sketches. You'll be able to put a word or name on the charm, or even make flowers and/or geometric shapes!

Session 2, September 1st: Make a Trinket Box The second session is about modeling a trinket box with a lid. The session will focus on the combining/subtracting and/or intersecting of geometry for modeling. We'll also focus on the concept of fitting tolerances needed for CAM/CNC fabrication, particularly 3D printing.

Session 3 September 8th: Make a Six-Panel Hinged Cube with Custom Panel Design In the third session, you'll model a 6-panel hinged cube, including learning how to create fitted hinges. You'll also get creative with the custom designs on each panel. This folding cube can be designed with a sports team logo, a company name, anything you want. It can also be made into a desk trinket to hold pencils/pens/stylus just by cutting out a hole on the top panel.

By the end of this workshop series you'll have a comprehensive understanding of 3D printing, 3D modeling software, and 3D design.
