Portland Java User Group: Android 3.0
Oracle (Downtown Campus)

This month's topic: Android 3.0

Google unveiled Android 3.0 in February 2011. This release provides a new UI and other features that are suited for mobile tablet devices. In this presentation, we'll discuss Android's new platform API's and highlight changes in the developer SDK.

Slides: http://www.slideshare.net/sullis/android-30-portland-java-user-group-20110315

Speaker: Sean Sullivan

Sean is a software engineer specializing in web services development, mobile applications, and supply chain management systems. Sean is an Apache Software Foundation committer and has contributed to various open source projects, including the OAuth Java library.

PJUG meetings start with some time to eat and socialize (pizza and beverages are provided), followed by the featured speaker, then Q&A, discussion, sometimes a drawing to give away swag. :)

Though we like knowing how many people to expect, you don't have to RSVP, on Upcoming or otherwise. Go ahead and just show up!

Many people also go for a drink and further discussion following the meeting, at a location determined ad hoc (lately, Trees restaurant in the same building).

How to analyze your website to understand EXACTLY what areas of SEO you need to work on to be #1.
  • On-Page Optimization How to optimize your page titles, meta descriptions, H tags, copy, URLs and ALT tags.  How to avoid duplicate content and canonical URL issues. How to build a strong internal link structure. How to see your website THE SAME WAY Google sees it so you can fix the content Google can't spider. Website architecture best practices: How to turn your website into one that Google loves.
  • Blog Optimization What blogging platforms you should use and which ones you should AVOID.  The best WordPress plugins for SEO.
  • Content Creation Why it's important to create fresh, quality content and WHAT GOOGLE CONSIDERS fresh, quality content.  How to create content that is great for your readers AND great for Google (this is one of the biggest challenges most SEOs have).

  • Q&A and Networking I'll be answering all your questions and ANALYZING YOUR WEBSITES to tell you what you need to work on to get to the top of Google (Due to time constraints, I can only analyze 2-3 websites, so if you're interested, please email me at [email protected] a few days before the event.)  We'll also have some time for networking and building VALUABLE CONNECTIONS.

What Business Owners need to know about Internet Marketing

The essentials that every business owner must know. Failure to understand these principles will probably cost you money. This will be presented both from the perspective of a business owner, and also from a consultant's perspective who must advise businesses.

Organic Search including Google, Bing, and Yahoo. The big picture: where they've been, where they're going and the impact of social media.
Paid placement advertising: including Google, Bing, Facebook. and some efficiency tools.
Social Media: Facebook and Linked-In. When and how to use them efficiently.
Twitter: when is it useful and important.
Local Search will get time too, for both brick and mortar businesses and onsite service types.

Even though this will largely be big picture stuff, there will be plenty of actionable ideas and takeaways.

Presented by Scott Hendison, founder Search Commander, Inc.

As the owner of a computer & software store from 1997 to 2002, Scott first learned about search selling software and building a local on-site computer repair business using both Pay Per Click and organic search engine optimization.

He began working for clients in the search industry in 2002, and has been attending and speaking at national search marketing conferences since he founded Search Commander, Inc. in 2004.

Search Commander, Inc. is an Internet consultancy with multiple services and brands, including SEO Automatic (a toolset for small businesses and Internet marketers), GetWPress (Wordpress development and maintenance), and Portland Technology Consultants (PDXTC - web hosting & technical services ).

Scott lives in SE Portland with his wife and two sons, and when he's not using a keyboard or cell phone, is often found coaching kids baseball, playing racketball, snowboarding or watching tv.

Developing for Google Glass
Webtrends

Is it too early to start talking about Glass, Google's new eyepiece display? I don't think so. The small display, "card" and "timeline" metaphors, voice/visual interaction, new gestures (like blink!) and ever-present display will present new challenges and opportunities for designers and programmers alike.

Eric Redmond has spent the last few months working on the Mirror API, and peering into the gnostic Glass SDK. He's also writing a book about Glass (woops! that's a secret). If you want a peek at the future, or discuss why you think this technology will fail (unlikely), or just want to see what all the fuss is about, you don't want to miss this one.

If you happen to have a Glass device, please attend! It'll be great to have a few to show off.
