In this powerful three-hour session, you will learn and practice a new way to coach your own direct reports, a method you can put to use immediately — while getting a preview into the upcoming “CEO and CIO Group Coaching Programs” from the Portland Transformational Leadership Initiative (PTLI) and Oregon Training Network (OTN).

A recent Portland Development Commission (PDC) survey of the Portland technology community found that the single greatest need is for more effective mentoring opportunities. We are responding to this need by adapting our already successful C-level six-month coaching program – now focused exclusively on CEOs and CIOs. In this three-hour preview session, you will get a taste of the full six-month program while experiencing a highly effective and structured approach to executive and peer coaching.

You will walk away from this first session having new insights into how you work with your direct reports and you will have a stronger sense of areas you’d like to improve in, related to your ongoing work as a CEO or CIO. We do this through illuminating blind spots, building up weak areas, and amplifying your strengths.

OEN Coaching Program

OEN’s new Coaching Program is an opportunity for entrepreneurs to share their goals, challenges, insights, and advice in an intimate and confidential setting. Limited to 15 participants, this Program is supported by a certified Coach and a network of mentors with expertise in various topics. Participants will meet monthly for a period of six months, though we expect the connections you make will endure long after the program ends.

Coaching and leadership development can often be inaccessible for entrepreneurs at this stage, which is why OEN is partnering with Geffen Mesher, one of Portland’s local accounting firms, and Industrious, Portland’s newest co-working space, to pilot this coaching experience. Participants will be assigned a small group of partners within their cohort to connect with between sessions to tackle pressing and emerging issues. All participants will be able to contact everyone in the cohort and all the mentors on an ongoing basis.

Entrepreneurship is hard, but it’s much harder if you try to go it alone. You need the support of other founders and startup executives who can “feel your pain” and help you solve real-life problems in real time. You also need experienced mentors who can help guide you on your path.

Eligibility: Founders and/or leaders of companies currently experiencing significant growth who want to learn how to scale up their business from an experienced coach, a peer cohort, and a network of mentors/experts in various fields. This is the perfect “next step” after our Startup Series.

Program: This six-month pilot program will kick off with a half-day session with subsequent sessions running for three hours. Participants will be also be matched up with a small Pod cohort to discuss emerging issues, homework, and other matters as they arise in between monthly meetings.

Given that many startups face similar challenges, we have curated a group of mentors, each with expertise on topics relevant to leaders of companies at this stage, including legal, accounting, sales, marketing, leadership, finance/fundraising, and more. These mentors have agreed to provide advice and support to the participants for the duration of the program. They will attend the first and last session and may appear as guest speakers when appropriate.

Prior to the first session, participants will be invited to take the Clifton Strengthsfinder Assessment to identify their Top 5 Strengths so that over the course of the Program, participants can expand their effectiveness, learn to leverage others’ strengths, and extend the collective strengths of their team.

The format of the monthly meeting will have one mentor present for the first 1-1.5 hours with a facilitated group discussion to follow. The discussion will be customized to the specific needs of the participants.

Welcome to the nuCognitive Agile Coaching Network.

Do you need help with your Agile adoption? Or, would you like to give advice to others on what worked or did not work as you were doing an adoption in your own company? If so, then than I am excited to invite you to attend the Agile Coaching Network. It’s an online community and a bi-weekly webcast that allows you to learn and share with other Agile practitioners.
​ Ray Arell will be the moderator of the bi-weekly event. The agenda and format are very simple, we are using a park bench chat style where everybody can participate. The goal is to get and provide help with adoption of Agile and other related topics. If no topic is introduced, then as the moderator I may propose a topic to get the group talking.

Agile Practitioners' Book Club: The Five Dysfunctions of a Team

Join us for a beer (or beverage of your choice) and a snack at the Rogue Eastside Pub to discuss Patrick Lencioni's book "The Five Dysfunctions of a Team". If you work with teams and team success, this book may be an interesting addition to your library.

Lencioni tells the story of a troubled Silicon Valley firm and the new CEO faced with uniting and guiding a team of leaders with the aim of making the company a success. Through this business fable, Lencioni highlights the common dysfunctions that he claims can cripple any team: absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability, and inattention to results. He offers ways to assess a team and provides actionable steps on how to overcome each of the 5 dysfunctions.

Food for thought:

  • This book tells the tale of a CEO refashioning the dynamic of an executive committee. Do fables apply to everyone?
  • Is Lencioni right? Does he name the most important dysfunctions that challenge the teams you work with?
  • What can we learn from this representative tale about development teams? Where can we add our own wisdom to Lencioni's model?
