Alchemy's 2018FreeCodeCamp.org JAMStack Hackathon PDX Edition!
through Alchemy Code Lab

Free Code Camp is hosting a JAMStack Hackathon in San Fransisco, and we can participate together in Portland! It's a two-day event on Saturday & Sunday, November 3 & 4 from 9AM to 9PM.

Come hang out and participate in the online version of the hackathon in person with teams we'll help you build in downtown Portland at Alchemy Code Lab! ACL lead instructor, mJordan, and Free Code Camp Portland Organizers / awesome developers, Brigette, Kenny, and Daniel will be ready to hack and help. Jason from Gatsby will also be popping in to help and provide some swag!

The online hackathon teams will compete for their own set of prizes. They can interact with the judges, mentors, and other hackathon teams through the chat room and the live stream of the event on the freeCodeCamp YouTube channel.

HOW TO SIGN UP (4 Steps to Officially Participate): 1. RSVP to our MeetUp

  1. Check out the official event page: https://hackathon.freecodecamp.org/

  2. Build and deploy a JAMStack app by following the included instructions. If you need help, feel free to reach out to [email protected] or join the Free Code Camp Portland slack group [http://bit.ly/freecodecamppdx] and reach out!

  3. Once your hello world app is live, apply for a free online ticket here: https://freecodecamp.typeform.com/to/v4mc19

*You can still participate without signing up for the online hackathon ticket, but you won’t be eligible for the official prizes.

SHOULD YOU SIGN UP? YES! Any skill level should feel welcome to come hang out and learn! Hackathons are a great way to meet new people and learn new skills. Some experience with HTML/CSS/JavaScript would be helpful, but there are always plenty of ways for people to contribute even if you don’t know any code coming in.

EVENT DETAILS: The main hackathon is from 9am to 9pm on both Saturday and Sunday. The space here will be available for the same hours.

Food carts are just a few blocks away when you need a midday break, and there will be some food provided...stay tuned!

WAIT, WAIT…. WHAT ACTUALLY IS THE JAMStack? The JAMstack is a simple way of building web apps. JAM stands for JavaScript, APIs, and Markup (HTML and CSS).

If you've built some of the projects in the freeCodeCamp curriculum, you've already been using the JAMstack.

The main difference between the JAMstack and other web development stacks like LAMP and MEAN is this: instead of using a web server back end, you use APIs.

Meet+Hack with the creator of the Wake Programming Language
Ava's Roasteria

Come and bring your laptop, grab coffee, and meet Mike Fairhurst, creator of the Wake programming language.

Learn about, write in, or guide the design of the Wake programming language at an informal hack night.

While hanging out, we'll go over - features we want to add to the language - problems we're trying to solve - prioritizing next steps to code up - talk about what we want from a standard library

Brave coders can spend some time working on the compiler (written in C++), while eager ones can try writing things in Wake to provide valuable feedback. Either way, work directly with Mike as questions come up to ensure its smooth sailing!

Legal Innovation & Technology Meetup with International #NewLaw Leaders Cat Moon, Jeena Cho, & Alix Devendra
Back Pedal Brewing

I'm very excited to announce an impromptu May 8 Meetup with three internationally recognized leaders in the NewLaw and LegalTech movements: Cat Moon, Jeena Cho, and Portland's own Alexandra Devendra!

These forward-looking lawyers will lead a panel discussion ranging from hot topics like the blockchain and AI in legal, to less buzzworthy (but perhaps more important) concepts like what legal teams can learn from the ResponsiveOrg and Holocracy movements, why a meditation practice can help you deliver better client value (and how to start one), how to innovate using the tools of design professionals, and why diversity is the key to achieving better outcomes.

Cat Moon (@inspiredcat) teaches legal design thinking and agile project management at Vanderbilt Law School, her alma mater. She is a contributor to the ABA’s Legal Technology Today blog and writes there and elsewhere about legal technology, blockchain, kanban and agile project management, design thinking, diversity/inclusion in the law, and work/life alignment. Cat also is co-founder, COO and CDO of Legal Alignment, a legal tech startup developing an AI-powered, interoperable platform for legal workflow and project management. She just wrapped up an international conference on Blockchain in the Law and the first Music City Legal Hackathon

Jeena Cho (@jeena_cho) is the co-author of The Anxious Lawyer, An 8-Week Guide to a Joyful and Satisfying Law Practice Through Mindfulness and Meditation (ABA). She is a regular contributor to Forbes, Bloomberg and Above the Law where she covers resilience, work/life integration, and wellness in the workplace. She regularly speaks on women's issues, diversity, wellness, productivity, mindfulness and meditation. She also co-founded Shape The Law, an unconference for lawyers, with Alix Devendra and Mary Redzic.

Alix Devendra (@alixdevendra) is an attorney and legal design consultant based here in Portland. She helps lawyers make their work product more effective using typography and other principles of visual communication design. She is the co-author (with Cat Moon) of the forthcoming Designing Your Practice: A Design Thinking Approach to Legal Services. Alix also consults for legal-tech startups, who value her experience in both law practice and design thinking. She travels internationally to speak and facilitate workshops on legal design.

We'll be at a new location this time, BackPedal Brewing at NW 15th and Flanders. They are opening especially for us and their (excellent) beer will be on tap--please plan to support them!

Finally, we're looking to grow this group. Please forward this invitation to anyone you think would be interested in these topics, including listservs or other groups you're a part of.

Let us know if you have any questions; we hope to see you on Monday May 8!

--John & Zac

Part hackathon, part geek social, these biweekly meetings are a time for you to come join others for insight, inspiration or just insanity. Bring your toys for others to see, or come see what others have been painstakingly chipping away at in their spare time. Whether it's code or chips, hacking of all sorts is encouraged. But we also like to hear your crazy ideas, so please come join us and bring your willingness to share your brilliance. We'll be the kids with all the coolest stuff on the table. Hope to see you there.
