"Financing the Good" Springboard Social Innovation Forum - FREE
Urban Grind East

With economic turmoil spreading from financial markets to local communities, it’s a tough season for raising funds to start or support good causes. Join us for this free event on December 10th to explore diverse ideas and new models for “financing the good.”

Panelists representing banking, angel investing, micro-philanthropy, and grant funding will discuss innovative approaches for funding social change that reflect shifts in the way their organizations do business. Specifically, they will highlight opportunities for "average" Portlanders to obtain funding for their social change projects and visions.

During the workshop segment, learn tips and tricks for obtaining one of Portland's community building or environmental grants, discover how community currency can fund social change, talk with a lawyer about how to apply for a 501(c)(3), learn how a social stock market generates seed funding for launching good ideas and how to implement "sustaining strategies."

Panelists: Mark Moffenbier, Shorebank Pacific Mark Holloway, Social Venture Partners Portland Amy Pearl, ChangeXchange Social Stock Market Joy Hunt, Vision into Action Grants

Workshops Angela Southwick, Neighbors West-Northwest Neighborhood Grants Emily Rice, Community Watershed Stewardship Program Environmental Grants Janelle Geddes, Metro Grants John Brown, Rooms for Peace Alan Rosenblith, Community Prosper, community currency Nancy Murray, Community Development Legal Clinic

The forum is sponsored by Portland-based nonprofit, Springboard Innovation. Springboard's mission is to launch community-led community change. The purpose of the forum is to empower "average" Portlanders with the resources and tools needed to take action to solve problems our society is facing.

**TUESDAY** The Digital Defense Fund and information security in abortion access
Virtual

NOTE: this meeting is on the 3rd TUESDAY because of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on Monday!

The 2020s have seen new and complex challenges for those fighting for reproductive freedom. In September of last year, the Texas legislature passed one of the most restrictive abortion bans in the nation, prohibiting all procedures after 6 weeks, without exceptions for rape or incest. But SB8 goes further, giving citizens with no connection to the woman the right to sue in civil court any person who aids her in seeking an abortion. As Planned Parenthood states, this means that “private citizens can sue other Texans for having or aiding in the procurement of an abortion — they can sue anyone from the person who drives the patient to the clinic to the doctor who performs the abortion.” (https://www.plannedparenthoodaction.org/planned-parenthood-pennsylvania-advocates/blog/how-did-texas-get-to-sb8) As the EFF predicts, “The result will be a chilling effect on speech and a litigation cudgel that will be used to silence those who seek to give women truthful information about their reproductive options.”

Since 2017, the Digital Defense Fund has brought engineers and organizers together to provide security and technology support for the abortion access movement. Kate Bertash, Director of the DDF, will speak during our January event about the critical work the DDF does to create "a future where technology and innovation support secure, autonomous reproductive decisions, free from stigma.”

Speaker bio:

Kate Bertash (she/her) is Director of the Digital Defense Fund, a team providing technology and security resources and front-line support to the American abortion access movement. She brings together a background in nonprofit fundraising and technology, and left startup life after co-organizing the Abortion Access Hackathons and Debug Politics Hackathons. In her free time she helps organize the Crypto and Privacy Village at DEFCON, designs fabrics, and is working on building a science research and education center here in the Pacific Northwest.

Alliance of Angels 10 Minute Pitch Clinic
K&L Gates

Raising capital from Angel investors can be a challenge, particularly given just 10 minutes to distill your entire business plan into a compelling presentation. What information is critical? How much detail is enough, or too much? What do angel investors consider when evaluating an investment opportunity?

Since 1999, the Program Managers at the Alliance of Angels have been coaching early-stage companies and bringing the best deals to angel investor members. Having collectively interviewed hundreds of companies, we have developed a set of best practices regarding the presentations that resonate with the angel investment community. In the 10-Minute Pitch Clinic, we share these best practices with you in an interactive workshop. Instead of learning these lessons the hard way, when you're in front of angels asking for money, consider attending our clinic first to get the inside information you need to know, now.

This workshop format will be divided into two parts. First, we will give an overview of the Alliance of Angels and discuss the components of a good 10 minute pitch. Afterwards, we will work directly with the participants on your specific start-up messaging. All you need to bring is your vision for your company and your desire to make this workshop truly participative-- no other preparation is necessary. Space is limited to 20 attendees, so reserve your spot today. The price to attend is $95 per person with advanced registration, or $110 at the door.

Dynamic Tracing with DTrace and SystemTap - Portland Linux/Unix Group Advanced Topics
Free Geek

Daniel Hedlund will be giving an intermediate to advanced level talk on DTrace and SystemTap.

DTrace (http://dtrace.org/blogs/about/) is a dynamic tracing framework, originally developed for Solaris, has been released under the CDDL license and ported to many other Unix-like OSes including FreeBSD, OS X and Linux. SystemTap (https://sourceware.org/systemtap/) provides similar functionality to DTrace but is Linux specific and released under the GPL.

Dynamic tracing tools make it possible to safely inject instrumentation points (probes) into running applications on production environments; no recompilation is necessary and there is only minimal performance overhead when being used, and no overhead when not. Probes can be used to gather performance metrics to identify bottlenecks, create aggregate statistics such as the size distribution of filesystem writes, or to introspect arguments passed to individual functions in a running application without ever taking it offline.

Many attendees will break for a social hour after the Third Tuesday meeting at the Lucky Lab on Hawthorne after the meeting

PLUG: Portland's monthly, three-track tech conference!

First Thursday: General Meeting at PSU

Third Tuesday: Advanced Topics at Free Geek

Third Sunday: Hands-on Clinic at Free Geek

Do you wish you had specific goals and strategies to hit your revenue targets?

2018 is almost halfway over but there's still time to make 2018 your best year in business yet!

A winning sports team would never take the field or enter the arena without a game plan in place. Likewise, a business that operates without a plan operates is at a significant competitive disadvantage.

Businesses move so quickly these days that it's no longer feasible to create long-term strategic plans. What is most effective is creating a bold vision, 3-5 year goals, and a specific 90-day plan. These 90-day "sprints" are strategically designed to keep you on- track and focused to meet your goals.

Learn how to get the results you desire in your business by creating a Powerful 90-day Plan for your Third Quarter at the Ignite your Business Workshop.

During this workshop, we'll cover: The importance of having written goals for achieving your dreams How to overcome resistance and blocks to planning (we all have them!) How to create a functional plan that isn't overwhelming and will actually keep you on track! How to reverse engineer a plan to reach your revenue goals in 2018 How to create more joy and ease in your business while achieving your goals Creating a bold vision to take you even farther than you can imagine!

Attendees will receive lunch, our 90-Day Powerful Planning Guide, and Professional Technique to help you succeed with your business planning.

Date and Time: Friday, June 22, 2018 from 11:45 - 2:00 pm

OHSU Technology Commercialization Seminar: Reshaping Consumer Health Behavior Through Measurement and Tailored Advocacy
OHSU West Campus (formerly OGI), Wilson Clark Center

This free seminar is sponsored by the Oregon Clinical & Translational Research Institute (OCTRI), OHSU Division of Management, and the Oregon Bioscience Association. It is part of an ongoing series focusing on commercialization of health and bioscience research.

To register for this seminar, please check the box in the upper left hand corner of this Web page. Since there is no cost, you will NOT have to provide credit card information.

Consumers hold the keys to the healthcare kingdom. Whether one turns to data from the Centers for Disease Control, advocacy organizations such as the American Cancer Society or from published research in the New England Journal of Medicine, one finding resounds--more than 70% of what drives our health status is the result of the choices we make. Even when health is genetically predisposed there remain the choices we make to express this disposition. The Patient Activation Measure (PAM), developed by Dr. Judy Hibbard and colleagues at the University of Oregon, was designed to assess the quintessential and largely untapped dimension of self-management competency. Research worldwide has validated the measurement power of the PAM, and the ability to use the PAM and its related body of behavioral insights, to render care and support with greater effectiveness and efficiency.

In this session Chris Delaney, CEO of Insignia Health, will discuss the Patient Activation Measure from its development in academia to its commercialization through the work of Insignia Health. Learn about the formation of a company through the support of technology transfer at the University of Oregon, the development of a product portfolio designed to activate consumers in their health, and the growth of a company whose clients now include more than 30 leading organizations, including Johns Hopkins Healthcare, Mayo Clinic, OHSU/Health Future, Providence, AstraZeneca and CareOregon.

Speaker Bio

Chris Delaney is the Chief Executive of Insignia Health, a Portland based company founded in 2006 through the technology transfer from the University of Oregon of the Patient Activation Measure and related intellectual property. Prior to Insignia, Chris was part of the founding group and Chief Marketing Officer for Definity Health. Definity, which was acquired by United HealthGroup at the close of 2004, pioneered account based HSA and HRA health benefit designs, as well as a number of Web innovations, including data-driven personalized messaging and cost and quality transparency.

After leaving Definity in February, 2005, Chris became a founding partner of the Sequoi Group, a consultancy specializing in consumer-driven healthcare and the emerging role of the consumer across the healthcare system. Sequoi worked with a host of Fortune 500 companies to develop capabilities supportive of greater consumer engagement in their health. Chris has served as an advisor to various healthcare companies, including Healthline, a pioneer in medically-guided Internet search and information therapy.

Prior to Definity, Chris spent 12 years in executive level brand management positions with The Pillsbury Company, Health Valley Foods, and Dreyer's & Edy's Grand Ice Cream. Chris and his teams developed dozens of leading brands under the Pillsbury, Green Giant, Health Valley, Starbucks, M&M and Godiva equities. Chris holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration from the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Occidental College.

Bring your Linux computer that is being a brat and we'll teach it some manners. Or bring your computer that has some evil operating system on it and we'll send it home with a shiny, clean Linux distro. Or just come and look over shoulders to see what Linux is all about.

If you already know Linux well, the Clinic is also a good place to learn how to help users troubleshoot problems. It's excellent training for tech support work in Linux.

We have monitors, mice, keyboards, and miscellanous other perifpherals, so generally all you need to bring is the box.

There will also be coffee and people usually bring munchies as well. After all, you can't do computers on an empty tummy.
