Galois tech talk: A Brief History of Verifiable Elections
Roll back
| description |

abstract:
Since the ideas were first published in 1981, verifiable election technologies have undergone decades of research successes and deployment failures. This talk will trace the history of these technologies, their evolution, and the practical challenges that they have faced. We’ll then look forward at the potential for near-term successes and the public benefits that may be derived.
bio:
Josh Benaloh is Senior Cryptographer at Microsoft Research where his research focuses on multi-party protocols. He earned his bachelor’s degree from M.I.T. and his doctorate from Yale University where his 1987 dissertation “Verifiable Secret-Ballot Elections” introduced the first application of homomorphic encryption. Dr. Benaloh serves as a director of the 1500-member International Association for Cryptologic Research and chairs the Citizen Oversight Panel for Sound Transit which is investing nearly $1 billion annually on improvements to the Seattle-area transit infrastructure. |

Roll back

You are cordially invited to join us for our Tuesday, July 28, 2015 Oregon Computer Consultants' Association Monthly Meeting!
On July 29 Windows 10 will be officially released. We have lots of questions that need to be answered.
~ What does it look like?
~ What are the potential problems?
~ What are the important new features?
~ What was left out?
~ What compatibility issues might there be?
~ Should my clients move production machines to it right away, or wait?
These and many more questions will be answered by Scott just 1 day before the Windows 10 release.
Presented by
Scott Hanselman. Scott works from his home in Oregon for the Microsoft Web Platform Team. He is a teacher. He speaks widely. He has written code that you've used. He's been blogging for over a decade, coding for twice that, and podcasting for over half that. He codes, writes, speaks, empowers, promotes, braids, learns and listens, usually not in that order.
Check out our speaker's web site and blog at http://www.hanselman.com/
About:

Galois tech talk: Effective Verification of Low-Level Software with Nested Interrupts
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
<p>abstract:</p>
Interrupt-driven software is difficult to test and debug, especially when interrupts can be nested and subject to priorities. Interrupts can arrive at arbitrary times, leading to an explosion in the number of cases to be considered. We present a new formal approach to verifying interrupt-driven software based on symbolic execution. The approach leverages recent advances in the encoding of the execution traces of interacting, concurrent threads. We assess the performance of our method on benchmarks drawn from embedded systems code and device drivers, and experimentally compare it to conventional formal approaches that use source-to-source transformations. Our experimental results show that our method significantly outperforms conventional techniques. To the best of our knowledge, our technique is the first to demonstrate effective formal verification of low-level embedded software with nested interrupts.
<p>bio:</p>
Lihao Liang is a PhD student in the Department of Computer Science of University of Oxford, working with Daniel Kroening, Tom Melham and Luke Ong. His research is supported by an Intel funded project Effective Validation of Firmware. He is interested in automated software analysis and verification, particularly concurrent software and synchronization primitives such as read-copy update (RCU). |

ARRIVING BY BIKE? Cyclists are welcome to park their bikes in the New Relic office. Bikes are not allowed in the building lobby, however, and must use the freight elevator. To get your bike up to the 29th floor, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." You can get up by buzzing in with the intercom, and saying you're here for New Relic. Ride on up to the 29th floor, you'll easily find the bike parking.

### Godfrey Chan: Dropping down to The Metal™
As much as we love Ruby, when you need to be really close to the metal, you have no choice but to use JavaScript. This is why I developed the javascript gem to help you harness the raw power of your machines. In this talk, we will examine the Ruby tricks and black magic hidden behind this ludicrous invention. Along the way, we will learn about how Ruby internally deal with variable lookups, method calls, scoping and bindings. Together, we will push the limits of the Ruby language, taking it to places Matz never ever envisioned!

Break into small teams! Build something awesome! Share the results!
At brightnight, we will start with a challenge, break into small groups, then create and code our ideas into existence! We will take the last 30 or so minutes of the night to show and tell. All skill levels are welcome. We'll code in Ruby but those who know other languages are welcome as well.
Come join us to enjoy some creative coding time where we all can learn from each other, try out wacky ideas and cultivate our skills in a fun, low-pressure environment.

Apple Watch, Android Wear and Wearables

<p>With Android Gear watches already in the market and Apple Watch near on the horizon, businesses and developers are scrambling to try to figure out how watches and other wearables fit into their plans.</p> <p><img src="http://photos3.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/6/5/c/600_433561628.jpeg"></p> <p>
