update Calagator::Event 1250468071 PDX Cocoaheads Roll back

description Speaker: Justin Miller Topic: Swift Walmart Labs will provide the pizza, and those who wish to will go out for beer after the meeting. For meeting reminders, join our Google group at https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/pdx-cocoaheads Speaker: Al She Topic: Writing Functions: Concepts and Optimizations Summary:We'll start with a few concepts related to functions, such as function overriding, overloading, passing functions as input and output arguments, function nesting, and closures. These topics will include code examples written in Apple's "Swift" programming language. In embedded software development, including mobile apps, it is critical that a software developer understand hardware features and limitations and write functions accordingly, regardless of the programming language. Given these considerations, we'll discuss how to write functions to optimize mobile app performance. Please note - we are not at Walmart Labs this month! We are also meeting a week later than usual. eBay doesn't provide pizza, but you are welcome to bring your own food (there are several food cart pods within walking distance of the office). Just be sure you have utensils, napkins etc. I will add more details about how to find the space after I have been there myself. PS A huge thank you to Todd Bates, who is sponsoring us on behalf of eBay. For meeting reminders, join our Google group at https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/pdx-cocoaheads

update Calagator::Event 1250468736 Collective Agency co-working 4-Year Anniversary: Open House, Lunch, Drinks Roll back

description Collective Agency, co-working in Portland Oregon turns 4 years old this month! This Tuesday July 21st is the open house from 9am to 5pm. Lunch is at 12pm (bring your own), drinks are at 4pm (we'll provide). The disco ball might turn on for a bit. There will be cupcakes. We'll be open to the public for the workday. For people interested in membership, you'll get a sense of the cozy workplace community here and can sign up, and for people who just want to visit for the day and share with their friends and co-workers, that's great too. We've hosted more open-source related events in the past 4 years than almost any other venue in Portland, are rated one of the best co-working places in the U.S., and have won awards as one of the world's most democratic workplaces. Community: Members here value socializing and community activities at their workplace. There’s desire expressed by members to have people here and community activities. Openness, socializing, inspiration, and friendships are largely what defines a successful event and a great day here. Many of us eat lunch and talk on the sofas here each day. There are weekly activities. Most of the time people are productively working. Neighborhood Notes wrote an article about the open house: http://www.neighborhoodnotes.com/events/2015/07/collective_agency_celebrates_4_years_of_work_space_collaborations/ RSVP for the open house on Facebook (the link at the top of this page) or just show up. The community guidelines are the core of the terms of service. http://collectiveagency.co/community-guidelines Sharing info about Collective Agency with people you know who might be interested is great. Membership is open. $250 per month or $2,400 per year per person includes: 24/7 access to the big loft room, conference room access (3 hours for each person each day for phone calls and meetings), and community activities. Companies can have up to 20 members here. description nil Attend Liferay's iBeacons workshop for free! Developing cross-platform mobile apps using iBeacons Learn the basics of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and iBeacons with James Falkner and how it can be used for interesting applications related to indoor positioning and location-aware apps. You'll build a cross-platform mobile app using Titanium Appcelerator (an open source cross-device mobile app platform) which displays engaging notifications as you move throughout a space and collects analytics along the way. Finally, you'll build a site using Liferay and build visualization plugins to be able to quickly see how you (and others!) are moving throughout the space using various visualizations like timelines, heatmaps, etc. To get the most out of this workshop, you should have some programming experience in any language (we'll be primarily using JavaScript and Java), but it's not absolutely required. To be able to deploy apps to your phone during the workshop, you'll need a reasonably modern iOS or Android smartphone (one of these) running iOS 7.1+ or Android 4.3+.

description
Hey folks! It’s time again for our monthly meeting. Whether you’re a newcomer to Scala or an experienced expert, we’d love to have you join us. We've got two great talks lined up this month and you won't want to miss either of these. Both speakers will be previewing their Lambda Conf talks. First up, we'll have our own Rob Norris talking about the implementation of his library Doobie which provides a pure functional JDBC layer for Scala.

We're also very lucky to have Paul Phillips joining us to talk about Suffuse. Suffuse is a system for writing filesystems in scala, built on top of native FUSE. The goal is that it be no more difficult to create a new filesystem than to create a new file. Subject matter will include the project's motivation, state, and opportunities for participation. He'll also talk about principles of API design in the Suffuse context.

We look forward to seeing you all there!

Hey folks! It’s time again for our monthly meeting.
