Join us at CtrlH for food, drinks, discussion and a talk by Juan Benet on IPFS during OSCON week!
## What is IPFS?
[IPFS](http://ipfs.io) is a distributed file system that seeks to connect all computing devices with the same system of files. In some ways, this is similar to the original aims of the Web, but brings in the latest ideas from P2P and cryptography to form a distributed, permanent web.
IPFS could become a new major subsystem of the internet. **If built right, it could complement or replace HTTP.** It could complement or replace even more. It sounds crazy. It is crazy! We also think it's the future of the web. Come see it in action, and meet the team of developers working on it.
Afterwards hang out, talk tech, hack, recharge your batteries, use our fast WiFi and get a tour of CtrlH, Portland’s newest and largest hackerspace.
See you there! |

Roll back
| description |

The Women in Technology, Coding, and Hacking (WITCH) second event will be held on July 16th at the Jaguar Land Rover R&D Labs in NW Portland. These events give us the opportunity to share our experiences, make new friends, provide informal mentorship, and strengthen Portland’s community of women in technology. Come celebrate summer with snacks and drinks, network, learn about all the groups serving women in computing and technology in PDX, and hatch fun plans for future collaborations!
Doors will open at 5:30, and at 6:00pm we'll have a quick welcome by organizing groups and sponsors. Food and drinks will be provided, so please RSVP so we can plan accordingly. Looking forward to seeing everyone there!
WITCH is a collaboration of the Portland women in tech groups Lesbians Who Tech, ChickTech, Girl Develop It, Women Who Code, PDX WIT, and more! It was created to bring our members together to cross-pollinate and provide support to all. Our first event, a holiday happy hour, was a great success and we're excited to make this a biannual event.

Topic: Swift

Speaker: Al She
Topic: Writing Functions: Concepts and Optimizations
Summary:We'll start with a few concepts related to functions, such as function overriding, overloading, passing functions as input and output arguments, function nesting, and closures. These topics will include code examples written in Apple's "Swift" programming language. In embedded software development, including mobile apps, it is critical that a software developer understand hardware features and limitations and write functions accordingly, regardless of the programming language. Given these considerations, we'll discuss how to write functions to optimize mobile app performance.
Please note - we are not at Walmart Labs this month! We are also meeting a week later than usual. eBay doesn't provide pizza, but you are welcome to bring your own food (there are several food cart pods within walking distance of the office). Just be sure you have utensils, napkins etc.
I will add more details about how to find the space after I have been there myself.
PS A huge thank you to Todd Bates, who is sponsoring us on behalf of eBay.

Collective Agency co-working 4-Year Anniversary: Open House, Lunch, Drinks
Roll back
| description |
<strong>Collective Agency, co-working in Portland Oregon turns 4 years old this month!</strong> This Tuesday July 21st is the open house from 9am to 5pm. Lunch is at 12pm (bring your own), drinks are at 4pm (we'll provide). The disco ball might turn on for a bit. There will be cupcakes. We'll be open to the public for the workday. For people interested in membership, you'll get a sense of the cozy workplace community here and can sign up, and for people who just want to visit for the day and share with their friends and co-workers, that's great too.
We've hosted more open-source related events in the past 4 years than almost any other venue in Portland, are rated one of the best co-working places in the U.S., and have won awards as one of the world's most democratic workplaces.
<strong>Community:</strong> Members here value socializing and community activities at their workplace. There’s desire expressed by members to have people here and community activities. Openness, socializing, inspiration, and friendships are largely what defines a successful event and a great day here.
Many of us eat lunch and talk on the sofas here each day. There are weekly activities. Most of the time people are productively working.
Neighborhood Notes wrote an article about the open house: http://www.neighborhoodnotes.com/events/2015/07/collective_agency_celebrates_4_years_of_work_space_collaborations/
RSVP for the open house on Facebook (the link at the top of this page) or just show up. The community guidelines are the core of the terms of service. http://collectiveagency.co/community-guidelines Sharing info about Collective Agency with people you know who might be interested is great.
<strong>Membership is open.</strong> $250 per month or $2,400 per year per person includes: 24/7 access to the big loft room, conference room access (3 hours for each person each day for phone calls and meetings), and community activities. Companies can have up to 20 members here. Full info on membership is at: http://collectiveagency.co/membership

<strong>Come and work here!</strong>

| description |
On Tuesday July 21st, 9am-5pm, Collective Agency is open to the public (non-members can be here) for the day. 12pm lunch on the sofas here. Collective Agency has been open for four years and this’ll be a mini-celebration.
Community Mission Statement: A cozy place to work alongside people doing work they’re passionate about and committed to, where 80% of people say hi. Come and work here!
Where? 322 NW Sixth Ave (between Everett and Flanders), Suite 200, Portland Oregon 97209. Buzz “200″ when you arrive. The phone will ring once or twice, then you’ll be buzzed up. Come on up; we’re on the second floor. When? Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm. 24/7 access for meetings by non-members, and members. What else? You can call (503) 517-6900 or email Alex at [email protected]
Community: Members here value socializing and community activities at their workplace. Recently there’s been desire by many members expressed to have more people here and more community activities. Socializing, learning, inspiration, in-depth open conversations with laughter are largely what defines a successful event and a great day here.
Membership is $250/month or $375/month. 12 months prepayment is $50 off per month. A company can have up to 20 members here.
People come here to work alongside other people instead of working from home.
Collective Agency started June 15th 2011, and has been open since August 1st 2011. We are one of the main co-working places in Portland Oregon.
Many of us eat lunch and talk on the sofas here each day. There are weekly activities. Most of the time people are productively working.
We also rent conference rooms for up to 14 people, and events of up to 125 people.

Attend Liferay's iBeacons workshop for free!
Developing cross-platform mobile apps using iBeacons
Learn the basics of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and iBeacons with James Falkner and how it can be used for interesting applications related to indoor positioning and location-aware apps. You'll build a cross-platform mobile app using Titanium Appcelerator (an open source cross-device mobile app platform) which displays engaging notifications as you move throughout a space and collects analytics along the way. Finally, you'll build a site using Liferay and build visualization plugins to be able to quickly see how you (and others!) are moving throughout the space using various visualizations like timelines, heatmaps, etc.
To get the most out of this workshop, you should have some programming experience in any language (we'll be primarily using JavaScript and Java), but it's not absolutely required.
To be able to deploy apps to your phone during the workshop, you'll need a reasonably modern iOS or Android smartphone (one of these) running iOS 7.1+ or Android 4.3+. |
