→ |
Jelly in Portland continues, every Monday (and really every Mon-Fri, 9-5). Come and work here! Alongside others. Bring friends.
Open to people who are friendly and doing some kind of work they care about, no matter what kind of work it is. Most people are usually working on website-related work or writing, or having conversations.
Look at the homepage of the website and see who we are and how you'd like to be involved.
Info on Jelly coworking: http://workatjelly.com
Logistics: Wi-fi, Stumptown coffee, beautiful workplace, indoor bike parking available upstairs. On the Yellow and Green MAX lines.
Expect to get as much work done as you want to, and to ask and give advice as much as you and others want to. "What are you working on?" and "What do you think of this?" (while showing a screen) are favorite questions. |

(Unconference) Evolving Virtual Teams
Roll back
| description |
Generally acknowledged best practices for software development strongly favor co-location, but with mergers, acquisitions, outsourcing, and off-shoring the co-located team is becoming an endangered species. Teams now are commonly project-based and geographically distributed. How can we work effectively with team members in different physical locations?
Learn from key open source leaders that with the help of virtual teams produce some of the highest quality, most widely used software today. Come prepared to speak your mind, share your experience, listen and learn about working in a virtual team. If you are involved anywhere in the software development lifecycle, this event is for you.
<b>What is an Unconference?</b>
An Unconference is the inverse of a conference, in that thereâs no predetermined, pre-set schedule, agenda, or speaker lineup. Utilizing the concept of OpenSpace, this unconference is the coming together of participants, with no predetermined agenda or program, to have an open discussion and share insight in a place where experts and beginners are equal. You won't be lectured at, rather you'll leave with a better understanding of a topic and the satisfaction of being heard outside Q&A time.
The OpenSpace methodology is carefully designed to elicit maximum involvement and creativity in a constructive atmosphere. It is also highly flexible so that the content is entirely determined by you -- the participants. This is not to suggest that the conference will not have content or outcomes, for there certainly will be both. Achievement in the meeting will be totally dependent upon individual and collective responsibility to make it happen. The content is what each person shares, and the outcome is what we will all create. The event will be inventive, creative, productive and full of surprises.
<b>Capacity:</b> 160 attendees
<b>Audience:</b> From executives whom are concerned with productivity, quality and cost management to product owners, analysts, developers, designers, and testers all who are attempting to share a single thought and build upon it.

Vision Planning for the Community-Minded
Roll back
| description |
Vision planning for people who want to do something for a community.
Do you not yet have a vision statement written out, or would you like to tweak or revise? And do you say things like, "I'm hoping someone will want to contribute to my project: it is for the public good"? Then this workshop is for you.
Monday, October 17th, 7-9pm. Catherine Poole, Alex Linsker, Mark Grimes, and more coaches to be announced will lead this workshop. Last month we had 3 coaches and 9 participants. We're expecting more this time.
The main questions about your vision: Where are you coming from? What phrasing describes the reason why youâre doing this?
If related questions come up organically, weâll explore. These questions are where groups like âCollective Agencyâ started.
Whether a website, open source project, discussion group, visual art, nonprofit startup, or something else, the main focus of the people who show up will be for the benefit of a group or groups of people (the "community"). Weâll have fun and develop a vision planning community of our own.
In 2 hours we will meet-and-greet (go around and say what weâre working on and what weâd like to happen with it), have a brief overview, then invest most of the time in one-on-one coaching in 15 minute sessions.
This event is free of charge. Vision coaching is available here upon request with free and paid options.
Please RSVP. Plancast is best, so people can see you're coming. Email [email protected] or tweet @alexlinsker with any questions. |

Innovation in Motion: Zero Moment of Truth - A New Model for Modern Marketing
Roll back
| description |
Shoppers used to make up their minds about a product within the first few seconds of encountering that product on the shelf for the first time. In 2005, Procter & Gamble coined this interaction as âThe First Moment of Truthâ. With the rise of internet use today, shoppers are now experiencing many brand interactions before they see the product on a shelf. This phenomenon (and marketing opportunity) is what Google is calling the âZero Moment of Truthâ. Eighty-three percent of shoppers make their purchase decisions prior to entering a store. This means that marketers now need to ensure that consumers receive a consistent and positive experience â from the Zero Moment of Truth to the point of purchase and beyond. Join our interactive marketing experts for innovative case-study examples and a lively discussion about what the Zero Moment of Truth means for both large and small brands.

PDX Python Monthly Meeting
Roll back
| description |
tl;dr: Python Module Thunderdome, Pythonic Trivia, wear Halloween costume if you like!
This Tuesday at 6:30pm at Urban Airship we'll be celebrating October with the Second Annual PDX Python MODULE THUNDERDOOOOOME. We still don't really know what the rules are, but it was fun last year so we're doing it again. :)
In the Thunderdome ring so far we have: Nick Wilson, Dan Colish, Chris McDonald and Kyle Jones. Are you up for a round in the dome? Pick a module in stdlib or PyPI and bring a 5 minute Michel's Module of the Month-style presentation to the meeting. All are welcome to compete! If you want to make sure no one else is doing your module, let me know ([email protected] / @pythonchelle) what you're thinking and I'll find out.
After the module throw down, Rob Bednark has created a Python-themed trivia game for us to play!
*** New this year: The Dome is close-ish to Halloween, and some competitors have talked about dressing up like the module they're representing. Why not? Dressing up is fun, and fun things are fun. (Still not sure if a costume will affect the results.) I am going to wear my Halloween costume, which has nothing to do with Python or modules, but does include some fake blood and a couple props. I might also bring some Halloween candy. Feel free to wear a costume, bring some candy to share, or none of the above, but please do join us! |

Smallest Federated Wiki Worksession with Ward Cunningham
Roll back
| description |
Interested in working with Ward Cunningham on his new wiki project? You can on Thursday, October 13th, 2011 at the Portland Incubator Experiment. Wiki-founder Ward Cunningham shared his idea of a Smallest Federated Wiki SFW during IndieWebCamp this June. In a few short weeks, he brought his idea to life and is inviting others to work with him on it. This is the second worksession for people interested in contributing to the project.
What is SFW?
The Smallest Federated Wiki project wants to be small in the âeasy to learn powerful ideasâ version of small. It wants to be a wiki so that strangers can meet and create works of value together. And it wants to be federated so that the burden of maintaining long-lasting content is shared among those who care.
As Ward says,
Our new wiki innovates three ways:
It shares through federation,
composes by refactoring and
wraps data with visualization.

Roll back
| description |
WhereCampPDX is a free unconference focusing on all things geographical. This informal meeting of minds welcomes all geo-locative enthusiasts, anyone who asks âwhere am Iâ or feels the need to âknow their placeâ.
An unconference is a conference planned by the participants, we all convene together, plan sessions, and have break-outs into sessions. This gives everybody an opportunity to bring to the table the things that interest them the most and lets us talk about new topics that are still new and exploratory. Part of what is important to hearing new voices and getting new ideas is lowering barriers to participation â this event is free and it is driven by the participants. |

Design for First Person User Interfaces
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Following in the tradition of Command Line, GUI, and NUI interface paradigms, first person interfaces continue to reduce the layers of abstraction between the digital and the real. With first person interfaces we can allow people to interact digitally with the real world as they are currently experiencing it. This allows people to navigate the space around them, augment their immediate surroundings, and interact with nearby objects, locations, or people.
First person interfaces enable people to interact with the real world through a set of âalways onâ sensors. Simply place a computing device in a specific location, near a specific object or person, and automatically get relevant output based on who you are, where you are, and who or what is near you.
The technology to make this happen is here today but these interfaces are in their infancy âthey need design help. They need designers to care and focus on this class of software.
About the Speaker
Luke Wroblewski is an internationally recognized digital product design leader who has designed or contributed to software used by more than 700 million people worldwide.
Luke is currently Chief Design Officer and co-founder of a stealth start-up. He is also an Entrepreneur in Residence (EIR) at Benchmark Capital. Prior to this, Luke was the Chief Design Architect (VP) at Yahoo! Inc. where he worked on product alignment and forward-looking integrated customer experiences on the web, mobile, TV, and beyond.
Luke is the author of two popular web design books, Web Form Design and Site-Seeing: A Visual Approach to Web Usability. He has also authored many articles about digital product design and strategy. He is also a consistently top-rated speaker at conferences and companies around the world, and a co-founder and former Board member of the Interaction Design Association (IxDA).

Catherine Poole, Alex Linsker, and more coaches to be announced will lead this workshop.
