create Calagator::Event 1250470262 Computer Science Colloquium: Drucker-Prager Elastoplasticity for Sand Animation Roll back

description nil Title: Drucker-Prager Elastoplasticity for Sand Animation Speaker: Joseph Teran, UCLA Abstract: We simulate sand dynamics using an elastoplastic, continuum assumption. We demonstrate that the Drucker-Prager plastic flow model combined with a Hencky-strain-based hyperelasticity accurately recreates a wide range of visual sand phenomena with moderate computational expense. We use the Material Point Method (MPM) to discretize the governing equations for its natural treatment of contact, topological change and history dependent constitutive relations. The Drucker-Prager model naturally represents the frictional relation between shear and normal stresses through a yield stress criterion. We develop a stress projection algorithm used for enforcing this condition with a non-associative flow rule that works naturally with both implicit and explicit time integration. We demonstrate the efficacy of our approach on examples undergoing large deformation, collisions and topological changes necessary for producing modern visual effects. Bio: Joseph Teran is a professor of applied mathematics at UCLA. His research is focused on numerical methods for partial differential equations arising in classical physics. This includes computational solids, computational fluids, multi-material interactions, fracture dynamics and computational biomechanics. Exciting applications include computer graphics and movie special effects at Walt Disney Animation. Professor Teran was a recipient of a 2011 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) and a 2010 Young Investigator award from the Office of Naval Research. In 2008, Discover Magazine named him one of the 50 “Best Brains in Science” which lauded him and other young scientists as “young visionaries who are transforming the way we understand the world”.

create Calagator::Event 1250470260 Best Practices for Destroying People’s Dreams (And Other Ways UX Can Be Helpful) Roll back

description nil Ever been handed a project or had someone come to you with an idea that immediately made you think, “This is probably a waste of time.” What if, instead of taking on the project, you first went to find out if it’s a good idea? This talk is a mix of stories about people whose dreams were dashed (and they were thankful for it) as well as practical advice for helping you find out if that idea is any good. The talk title comes from the fact that, over the course of his career, Matthew killed several projects by providing evidence that the project shouldn’t even begin (or should be stopped in its tracks). Twice, he’s had to deliver the bad news to someone who then went on to shutter their entire business. And they thanked him for it. Spending $20,000 to make that early decision meant avoiding spending millions to build something no one would want enough to justify the money, time, and effort.
Our Presenter, Matthew Oliphant
Matthew has been getting people from WTF to FTW since 1999 when he started down the UX road as a Technical Writer. He’s worked as a freelancer, in corporate cube-farms, agencies, and startups. He is currently Director of User Experience at Vadio, an innovative video startup. Matthew has designed and led the development of several multi-million-dollar products, redesigned large-scale corporate design and development processes, led research efforts to understand the needs of organ transplant recipients, and ghost-edits articles on web design and development on the side. He continues his mission to Inform and Educate by running Refresh Portland (this site!), a non-profit organization devoted to highlighting new voices and interesting perspectives on all things web-related.

create Calagator::Event 1250470256 Portland Podcast Cooperative: Mingle, Chat with Roustabouts & Dr. Kiki Too Roll back

description nil Hey Fellow Podcasters Let's meet again and chat, shall we? It's about time. We're overdue. On Thursday June 9th, at the glorious new NedSpace location on SW Washington we're gonna have a full on podcast hootenanny. There will be ample time for some mingling, chatting, talking, inspiration and perhaps even some overall fiddle-faddle. So, RSVP now and come get yourself some podcast connecting done. One thing, you can take a look at Portland's first podcast studio, AKA Bigfoot Podcast Studio. Full of audio devices galore and the sweet, sweet sounds of a padded room for podcast recording goodness. Also, during the evening, we'll be hearing some podcast insights from Dr. Kiki Sanford hostess of This Week in Science (TWIS) is a weekly, hour-long web and radio show presenting an humorous, often opinionated, and irreverent look at the week in science and technology. In each episode, TWIS discusses the latest in cutting-edge science news on topics such as genetic engineering, stem cells, cybernetics, epigenetics, space exploration, neuroscience, microbiology, the end of the world, and a show favorite – Countdown to World Robot Domination. TWIS broadcasts weekly at 8:00pm Pacific Time on Wednesdays. Oh yeah, the show has been running weekly for over 10 years, and has recorded over 565 episodes. Yowza. How does she do it? How to they make money? What have they learned from 10 years in the podcasting biz? G-Spot science, sperm updates, dinos and dung beetles, dirty wine...they cover it all. Dr. Kiki will share some thoughts and ideas on podcasting and her podcasting adventures. Then a little Q&A, then back to more mingling and whatnot. Casual and fun. Be there or be square...space. description nil Taught by John Blyler, PSU and JB Systems This course educates users with the CyberSecurity knowledge and skill set to survive malicious attacks that continue to increase in COMPLEXITY, FREQUENCY and SEVERITY. Students understand what CyberSecurity is all about: to manage assets, and deploy security measures to pre-empt, prevent, and proactively control risks by identifying, monitoring, prioritizing, controlling, and mitigating them. Controlling these threats requires multiple security disciplines working together in context. While no single solution will solve the problem of such threats, next-generation security tools provides the unique monitoring, management, configuration, control, and the integration needed to find and stop these threats — both known and unknown. This course will show what these tools are all about. View on the Benchmark Email site

update Calagator::Event 1250470251 Hack Oregon Spring Buildathon Roll back

description # Presented with The Oregonian and Oregonian Media Group ##What is it? Believe it or not, Hack Oregon actually doesn’t really do a lot of Hackathons. We form specialized teams to build software and open data stories for important themes in Oregon, and work and iterate incrementally over months to create a product. The “Buildathon” is the one day where we open up our project teams for guest contributors that want to be part of the magic and build something amazing, but might not have the time to participate in our months-long project season. ## What’s the goal? The Buildathon is a production sprint. We’ve laid the groundwork to do research, visualizations, and data storytelling quickly, and we need your help to bring our projects to the next level. Be prepared to make friends and be an instant part of our Hack Oregon family! ## How can I get involved? By joining our sprint, you’ll be placed with a team that needs extra hands on deck in your particular skill set. We’re working toward a public demo day in June, where you can proudly present alongside your team. ### Here are the two ways to join the event: 1. We have open roles for experienced developers, creatives, and multimedia storytellers on each team. If you'd like to join one of the project teams for the day, we'll need to match you with the team that needs your skills most and give you an onboarding package. **[Fill out this inquiry form](https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1TRuG_28QcFlWBcO3LX5gJp9SyqTRidTijjaBCb-Mpd4/viewform) along with your eventbrite RSVP, and we will be in touch with you shortly!** 2. If you are a new to coding or want to contribute in a non-tech way, we have a highly appreciated team working on research, fact-checking, and user testing. **No inquiry form required, just go ahead and RSVP for "Research Team". ** We can't wait to meet you! ### Perks * Team T Shirt * All Day Food * Profound Glory ## Project Teasers ### Food Insecurity: “Oregon Hunger Equation” Why does Oregon consistently have one of the highest reported rates of food insecurity in the country? We’re analyzing links between regional cost of living, benefit programs, and local school districts to solve for systemic causes of hunger at home. ### Campaign Finance: “Behind the Curtain” Hack Oregon has the only machine readable database for local campaign finance in the country. We’re adding in new meta-data and working on fascinating high level view of influence and money in Oregon’s election cycles. ### Urban Development: “Plot PDX” Data can tell us a lot about our neighborhoods. We’re building maps that take a non-typical approach to hard truths about urban growth, concentration of wealth, and the digital divide. ### Agriculture: “Crop Compass” In the Pacific Northwest, we live in one of the most rich biospheres in the world, with global demand for Oregon grown products. We have the ability to produce a wide range of food in Oregon, but we’re far from self-sustaining. How do our economic and environmental factors work together to shape our food system? ### Education: "Programming for Progress" Across Oregon, some schools are lucky enough to have free or low cost summer school programming and/or afterschool programming. How much of a difference can that programming make for early literacy, attendance, and future academic success of students? What does could this say about Oregon’s statewide performance, and especially those districts facing higher poverty? ## [Eventbrite RSVP Here!](https://www.eventbrite.com/e/hack-oregon-spring-buildathon-tickets-25360055609) # Hack Oregon Spring Buildathon!

## Presented with The Oregonian and OregonLive

##What is it?
