Oregon Innovation Academy Launch and Unconference
Roll back
| description |

→ |
The Innovation Academy is bringing together students, teachers, and working professionals from the Northwest’s technology industries to empower students with new skills sets of the digital age.
Teams will work collaboratively to build software applications and other technology-‐based solutions that solve real world problems that exist within our community. The solutions that will emerge from these teams will be known as "Innovation for the Common Good."
The region’s first "Innovation Academy will be launching at Franklin High School Saturday, May 18 from 2-‐5pm. The launch will offer students the opportunity to form project teams that will meet over the summer to work on their projects with industry mentors. New solutions in areas such as education, the environment, energy and public safety will be explored.
Attendees at the launch event will preview a new community safety mobile app that is being developed by a team of Franklin and Wilson students working with industry experts and the Portland Police Bureau. Designed to improve communication and collaboration between district police officers and the neighborhoods that they serve, the new mobile app is an example of the kind of impact student-‐based innovation can bring to Oregon.
All students, teachers and technology industry professionals are welcome to participate in the launch event. Once teams have been formed and projects are begun, their solutions will be demonstrated in a large community celebration when the school year resumes next fall. |

CHIFOO Presents: The Future of Kick Ass Cars
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
The program will begin with a review of Hondaâs user research and design research process while developing new applications for the companyâs 3-D heads-up display prototype. It will be a fairly candid talk showing lessons learned and how the team changed focus mid-way on design direction after learning about new things while designing. This included focusing more on the driverâs primary task instead of secondary tasks to help create a more engaging (âkick-assâ) experience for the driver.
About the Speaker
Victor Ng Thow Hing is a Principal Scientist working at the Honda Research Institute in Mountain View, Calif. He has worked on projects related to digital human modeling, intelligent systems, human-robot interaction, and now human-machine interaction in the car.

May PADNUG - A Tour of WinRT using C# and XAML
Roll back
| description |

Metro... no wait WinRT... no wait Window 8... no wait Windows RT... no wait Windows Store Apps - argh!! to much confusion!
So what does WinRT have to offer? Is it worth the effort to learn it? This presentation is about Charles' experiences with WinRT as he dove into learning WinRT back in December of last year and what he has discovered along the way.
He will attempt to give you the width and breath of what WinRT has to offer using C# and XAML but the presentation is not about C# and XAML. He came from a WPF/XAML background so it was natural fit for him. In addition, he intends to poke a lot of fun at Microsoft, Google, and Apple - especially at their marketing departments! Along the way we will have a bit of a history lesson coupled with a group quiz and in addition, we will try to discern the future.
Oh, and who the heck stole the "Start" button! "That totally stinks!" - Bob "Bulldog" Brisco host of the Gonzo Sports Show KACL on Fraiser.

Rony Lerner, VP of Engineering at Tripwire, will share how he stumbled upon Scrum and will argue that a top down approach is more effective than a bottom up approach to agile adoptions.
Don’t be shy. Bring your toughest questions and your management team. Rony can take it.

Rony is responsible for growing and extending the company’s market-leading software products across a wide range of industries to help customers meet compliance regulations, improve security and drive IT efficiency. Prior to joining Tripwire, Rony was Vice President of Research and Development for the Database Management Business Unit of Quest Software Inc., where he led the development and release of more than 40 products, with 250 engineers distributed in 20 locations across four continents. Introducing SwellPath Presents, a Free Event
Responsive Design, Mobile SEO, and the Future of Search Marketing.
The modern web is multi-platform. Brands interested in providing site experiences that delight customers need to have sites that display flawlessly and are highly useful on desktops, phones, and tablets; experienced digital marketers know this, savvy users know this, and the web's leading search engines know this. Don't be left behind and relegated to the bottom of the search results for your valuable keywords. Make sure that search engines rank your site where it belongs so your mobile audience can find you at the important stages of their journeys. In the first ever SwellPath Presents, our Senior SEO Analyst, Mike Arnesen, will teach why mobile SEO is more important than ever, dive into the different takes on mobile SEO, and outline how you can build a mobile experience that is nothing less than SEO perfection.

In the wake of tragic national and local losses in the open source community to depression, Yshai Boussi of Portland Family Counseling will discuss all aspects of depression including signs and symptoms, origins, solutions and treatments, how to help others if you're concerned that they may be depressed. Yshai has family in the tech community and insights into why we may have a different relationship with depression than most communities.
Yshai has been practicing as a psychotherapist since 2003. Over the years, he has worked with many different types of individuals, couples, adolescents and families. He has seen how depression affects individuals but also friends and family as well. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor operating a private practice with his wife called Portland Family Counseling. Our practice is in NW Portland. http://portlandfamilycounseling.com

COPIOUS is a user-centered digital experience agency. We build digital products with the user at heart and technology in our bones. We recently moved to a new office and now have a large space to host our TechTalks.
**About TechTalks:**
COPIOUSLabs TechTalks series meets every other Friday at 1pm at the COPIOUS offices. Our talks span artificial intelligence, new programming languages and techniques, computational linguistics, geographic data processing, systems and software architecture, augmented reality, network security, and more as proposed to the Copious engineering team.
**About this talk:**
Speaker: [Andrew Gauger,](http://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=44275699&authType=NAME_SEARCH&authToken=nVfL&locale=en_US&srchid=4efb4353-06dd-46d4-8f13-ac674eb24546-0&srchindex=1&srchtotal=13&goback=%2Efps_PBCK_andrew+gauger_*1_*1_*1_*1_*1_*1_*2_*1_Y_*1_*1_*1_false_1_R_*1_*51_*1_*51_true_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2&pvs=ps&trk=pp_profile_name_link)
Systems Engineer, Rejuvenation
MongoDB allows for abstracted data storage, so Andrew will talk about implementations of this flexible data design pattern. State machine and its ability to extend a document asynchronously gets highlighted. We will talk about data abstraction, and how to abstract structured data into a schema-less logger to perform validation.
In this TechTalk, Andrew will aim to describe clustering and replication as well as referencing and embedding in a simple language. The samples come fast but keep to explaining a simple topic. The talk diverges about how distributed database technology can be brought to firmware, how massive quantity small computing instances best leverage this technology, and what frameworks exist to leverage MongoDB on an upcoming project.
All are welcome to attend. If you have a talk that you'd like to suggest presenting, please email it to [email protected] along with a brief outline of what you'd like to cover. |
