3D Printing Basics
Roll back
| description |

→ |
Want to get hands-on experience with 3D printing methods? We will be creating and preparing 3D models for 3D printing. This workshop is good for those who want gain fluency with both 3D modeling (CAD) and 3D printing. We will teach you to create digital files and prepare them for 3D printing. Subjects may include: choosing the right material and method of 3D printing, drawings models with TinkerCAD, and adding supports if necessary to your models for 3D printing.
By the conclusion of the workshop you will be able to produce a 3D-printed object from a design you created.
We will be using 3D printers known as cartesian and delta bots, reprappro mendel, printrbot simple metal, an SLA printer, and the MOST delta. The printers are all connected to a wireless hub and we connect to them wirelessly via web browser. No software is necessary to control and submit jobs on the printers.
Bring a laptop with your favorite slicer and 3d modeling software installed (and bring a mouse).
The software we use for slicing 3D files is called Cura v. 15.02.1 (an older version works best).
One software we use for adding supports (if necessary) is called MeshMixer by autodesk.
One CAD software we’re gonna use is web-based TinkerCAD and requires no installation.
We prefer you use Fusion 360.
Sliding Scale Admission - Suggested Donation is $20

CNPDX June: VMs and Runtimes with Kubernetes
Roll back
| description |

Our June meetup is scheduled at CloudAbilty! Please RSVP on Meetup.com for an accurate headcount, if you can.
Josh Berkus of Red Hat will present:
"CRI-O, a runtime for Kubernetes"
While most people use Kubernetes with Docker, it's not limited to using just Docker. Josh will demo CRI-O, a minimal container runtime designed for meeting Kubernetes' container needs ... and no more.
Then, for our feature presentation Eric Ernst of Intel will present:
"Using OVS-DPDK, VPP and SRIO-V with Clear Containers"
Using OVS-DPDK, VPP and SRIO-V with Clear Containers Clear Containers is an Open Containers Initiative (OCI) “runtime” that launches an Intel VT-x secured hypervisor rather than a standard Linux container. A brief introduction of Clear Containers will be provided, followed by an overview of CNM networking plugins which have been created to enhance network connectivity using Clear Containers. More specifically, we will give an overview of DPDK, OVS, VPP and SRIO-V, followed by demonstrations of using OVS-DPDK, VPP and SRIO-v based networks to connect Clear Containers. |

Portland Ruby Brigade monthly meeting
Roll back
| description |
We'll have pizza & beer starting at 6pm, so stop by early if you want to have dinner and socialize before the presentations. **This month's meeting is on the 27th floor.**
##LIVE CODING at 7pm
###Main Event: LIVE PAIR PROGRAMMING with Lauren Voswinkel and Sam Livingston-Gray
In lieu of a formal presentation this month, we'll have two veteran Ruby developers throw a terminal session up on the big screen and try like heck not to make complete fools of themselves!
###Lauren Voswinkel: Conway's Game of Life Code Retreat.
"Assuming we're not having too much fun with the live coding, we'll take 30-45 minutes to work on Conway's Game of Life. Pair programming is *highly* encouraged, but is not required. We'll take some time to talk about what we learned during the exercise, as well as what approaches worked and what didn't. The whole idea of this exercise is to have a space and time to actively practice coding."
**Please Bring Your Laptops**
After the madness, we'll have more socializing time.
##**Thanks to New Relic for providing the venue and beer, pizza & snacks this month!**
ARRIVING BY BIKE? Cyclists are welcome to park their bikes in the New Relic office. Bikes are not allowed in the building lobby, however, and must use the freight elevator. To get your bike up to the 5th floor, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." You can get up by buzzing in with the intercom, and saying you're here for New Relic. Ride on up to the 27th floor, you'll easily find the bike parking.
ABOUT THE GROUP: *The Portland Ruby Brigade, also known as pdxruby and pdx.rb, is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland, Oregon area. The group welcomes all programmers interested in the language and its implementations, tools, libraries and frameworks, such as Ruby on Rails. The group has been meeting since August 2002 for presentations, demos and discussions. Every month 35-75 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for Ruby. If you'd like to present or have a topic you'd like discussed, please post to the mailing list. The group usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month, "Ruby Tuesday" -- see you there!* |

→ |
This year, TAO is excited to be bringing together tech companies in our region for the Pride NW Parade on June 18th. Diversity and inclusion is an integral part of our tech community and regional workforce. This parade will assist in unifying our local companies in a way that celebrates diversity.
TAO is serving as an umbrella organization for interested individuals and companies to participate more easily in the parade. Our collective tech community is walking together in the parade behind one banner in support of this very important cause. We are so grateful that Zapproved came to us with the idea of bringing together multiple tech companies and reaching a more broad audience for this initiative!
Ways to Participate
Companies interested in including their logo on our parade banner can register beforehand here. Individuals and companies are also encouraged to register to participate in the parade itself and walk together supporting diversity and inclusion in our industry. Registered companies and individuals will be sent more information on our meeting location prior to the event.
Donations for Pride NW will also be accepted here with proceeds being sent to Pride NW on behalf of our regional tech community.
Pride NW
Pride NW is a local nonprofit that assists in serving the LGBTQ community. As a part of registering for this event, you are committing funds to cover costs for the registration and tech community banner, as well as direct proceeds donating the Pride NW organization. |

Deploying to Azure has never been easier with the inception and continual improvement of Azure Resource Management (ARM) templates. At Elastic, we've had an ARM template in the Azure Marketplace for quite a while, able to deploy an unlimited size Elasticsearch cluster in a variety of topologies, and including a Kibana UI visualisation web frontend in addition to plugins for security, monitoring and alerting. We will share our experience developing ARM templates, and how we brought them to the Azure marketplace.

How Automation Can Help You Implement Governed Data Discovery @DAMAPDX
Roll back
| description |

In today’s age of analytics, businesses are demanding self-service access to their corporate data, while struggling to make sense of raw data at the source. In response to this, recent analyst reports have revealed a new form of BI architecture known as Governed Data Discovery. These architectures are immense data structures that, while able to address recent needs, are daunting for even large teams of BI professionals to build using traditional methods. However, with the use of automation software, these structures can be built and maintained by just one person with some data modeling experience. We will go into detail about some of the driving factors of Governed Data Discovery and explain how leading automation software can enable even small organizations to benefit from this approach.
What Attendees Will Learn from Presentation:
<ul>
<li>
The different factors driving Governed Data Discovery including the Gap between Business and IT.
</li>
<li>
What is Governed Data discovery? What does this type of data architecture look like?
</li>
<li>
How Automation software can address the challenges in building & maintaining such an architecture.
</li>

PDX Women in Tech (PDXWIT) Happy Hour Networking Event
Roll back
| description |
** Please RSVP on Eventbrite **
Join us for happy hour at PricewaterhouseCoopers on June 27th.
With summer upon us, we wanted to take a moment to celebrate the end of the school year. We’ve all been students and many of us are parents, so we know how important education is and wanted to build our June event theme around it. The conversation starter this month is “If you were a high school student today, which class would you want to take?”
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase three women in our community.
• Introduction to PwC, including what they do and what job opportunities are available.
• Marie Xun Wang, Postdoctoral Researcher at OHSU, will give us pointers on transitioning out of school into the professional world.
• Esbeida Ramos and Nikki Whitton, both STEM Event Coordinators at nConnect NW, will talk about preparing the future workforce.
During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking:
• An Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director.
• Table Topics to help break-the-ice.
• A section for job seekers and those hiring, to ensure people get connected.
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Trans and non-binary people are always welcome at our events.
