Join SANS Instructors Brian Ventura and Derek Hill for an evening of conversation regarding Secure configurations - Built-in Security Enhancements and the benefit of the CISSP certification from a hiring manager perspective.
TOPICS
1. In the information security news, we regularly hear about the latest vulnerabilities with recommendations to scramble and patch immediately. This is an important aspect of our industry, however there are other security considerations. Are there configurations we can set now in our systems and software that will protect us? Let's explore secure configurations and see what we find.
2. The Hiring Manager is looking at your resume – why does CISSP matter? While the CISSP is not the only thing we look at, it is a great starting point. What knowledge does the CISSP provide and how does one prepare for the exam?
Who is Brian Ventura: Brian Ventura is an Information Security Architect by day and SANS instructor by night. Brian volunteers with the Portland ISSA and OWASP chapters, focusing on educational opportunities. For SANS, he regularly teaches CyberDefense courses like the CIS Controls, Risk Management, and Security Essentials. Brian has a Security Essentials (SEC401) course in Portland, June 18-23. Come join in the learning experience!
Who is Derek Hill? Derek Hill has over 25 years of experience in IT and Information Security. He currently manages an Application Security Team, an Infrastructure Security Team (Blue Team) and a Data Privacy Engineering team at HP Inc. in Vancouver, WA. His teams are responsible for ensuring that HP’s internally developed applications are secure as well as the AWS infrastructure that is hosting these applications. Prior to his current position, Derek held IT management and technical roles at both large and small companies. In each role, he has focused on delivering excellent services, uptime and security for all the projects/staff he managed.
Derek holds an MBA from Willamette University and an undergraduate degree in Management Information Systems from Oregon State University. He has various security credentials including a CISSP and multiple GIAC certifications.

Come join us for Pythonic talks!
This month:
JR Heard presents:
How To Find All Your Bugs Using Generative Testing
Testing your code is important, but writing example-based unit tests by hand is time-consuming and often ineffective. There's a better way! In this talk, JR (formerly @yelp, currently @ewindsolutions) will show you how to use the Hypothesis library in order to create property-based tests. Hypothesis is easy to use, it's fun, and it'll find tons of bugs in your code so you can sleep better at night! All skill levels are welcome; this talk will be great for beginners and advanced programmers alike.
Join us after the meetup at Bailey's taproom at 213 SW Broadway to continue the discussion over a beverage.
Do you have something you'd like to share? Submit talk proposals here:

Bridges.
PDX. Stumptown. Rose City.
Portland has many nicknames, but perhaps the most enduring is Bridgetown — a nod to our iconic bridges and the culture of acceptance that fuels our creativity. Portland’s famed bridges represent our progress and expose our challenges. From a past tarnished with racial inequality to a present that seeks to transcend that story. Year 8 is dedicated to building the future of Portland as an equitable, hopeful, and prosperous city for all. We will explore the duality with each speaker and their idea. |

Q: What is the parking situation?
A: Lots of free parking available. There is a parking lot and some street parking available but I wanted to let you know that there is a parking garage (called The Round Parking Garage) on 12655 SW Millikan Way, which is a very convenient location for parking: http://theroundbeaverton.com/transit-parking/parking/
Q: Is there secured bike parking?
A: No
Q: Should I consider using public transportation?
A: Absolutely! The Watson Building is located right at the Beaverton Central MAX stop, so it’s an easy trip in from either Portland or Hillsboro.
Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome.

We’ll focus this event on tips and ideas for folks embarking on their own strategy and anyone looking to improve their digital profile.

Tonight, we're going to celebrate with a collection of *lightning talks* show-casing new things we've learned or built...essentially, live demos of our #cool-til Slack channel 😄
This includes a demo of Howard's new keyboard.io and his hacks to make it work well with Emacs.
After our show and tell session, we'll retire to a nearby restaurant for food and drinks. Hope to see you there. |

Workday's new offices are in the same building as their old offices, but on the **5th floor**, so you can now enter on either side and take the elevator all the way. |

PIZZA WITH INTEGRITY
A labor of love
Pizza originated as the food of the people. A simple meal of fresh baked bread topped with seasonal ingredients, a slice would cost a fraction of a cent on the streets of Naples. Hundreds of years after its inception, pizza is without a doubt one of the most popular foods in the world.
Our intention is to make delicious, well-crafted pizza affordable to all, while ensuring that those who work to put food on your plate can still afford to feed themselves and their families. This is why all our workers earn at least $15 per hour, and why we have a pay-it-forward system that ensures no one leaves here hungry.
Just like pizza, paying it forward also has Neapolitan origins. A tradition that dates back to the hard economic times during WWII, it began with people buying their morning coffee, but paying for two so that someone else could enjoy a coffee even if they couldn't afford it. The idea has since spread worldwide, and we believe there's no reason it can't work with a slice of pizza instead of coffee.
We also just love making pies, listening to music, and talking about ninja turtles.
Scottie's Pizza Parlor is a place where anyone is welcome to grab a slice, have a beer, play some pacman, jam out with us under our disco ball, bring the family, crush a whole pie by yourself, or just hang out at the counter and watch the pizzamaking action!
See you at the pizza party! |

PDX Women in Tech (PDXWIT) Creating a Culture of Inclusion and Equity
Roll back

***Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-creating-a-culture-of-inclusion-and-equity-tickets-45293162067] is required to gain entry to this event ***
Tech culture needs to change. All too often, underrepresented groups are marginalized and excluded as a result of implicit bias, often expressed through microaggressions. Creating a culture in which everyone experiences a sense of acceptance and belonging requires a collective commitment.
Changing the culture requires a lot of people making individual choices that actively tear down and confront everyday biases and microaggressions. Such work is difficult and takes practice. Lack of understanding, personality traits, friendships, professional goals and a fear of offending people all get in the way of confronting bias and its harmful effects.
Based on research and experience, “Creating a Culture of Inclusion and Equity” brings to light the impact of cultural bias and how to bring about change. Using concrete, typical scenarios, participants will learn about the relationship between implicit bias and the microaggressions that can surface. Participants will discover their own personal obstacles and identify and practice strategies to engage in culture change.
