PASCAL Hackerspace - Tools That Pwn: A Hacker Symposium
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
<p>This Saturday at PASCAL we are offering a Hacker Symposium of sorts, featuring a few handy tools of the trade as well as two major frameworks often used in developing exploits and attacking systems or networks. We will be surveying several of the tools that are part of Kali, and easy to install on any Debian derived distro. It seems many folks, sometimes even the professionals already hip deep in the field of tech, are unaware of the power their packages wield! The wild hacker kidz at Portland's only non-profit hackerspace are going to show you how to get started with packaged/pre-loaded tools like Burp Suite, Binwalk, Wireshark, Kismet and will also provide you with an overview of the Metasploit and Volatility frameworks. Come take your first step with Reverse Engineering at PASCAL using Binwalk! Excuse yourself and set up a proxy with Burp Suite! Breath deep and sniff packets with Kismet! Enjoy these puns and more, in person with MrDe4d, Cylon, Wireglitch and the rest of the misfit hackers of PDX this Saturday!</p> <p>After (and probably during) this presentation, we will, as presenters and attendees, decide on which tool (or framework) to focus on for a new bi-monthly workshop. We will set aside time to answer questions, and hold demonstrations of each utility discussed. This is all about what YOU want to learn!! The future workshop will be scheduled after all Q&A and demos are complete and will take place 2-4 weeks after, at which point we will continue the series until we have completed a thorough review of each tool.<br>Questions? please email MrD34d--> [masked] or Cylon--> [masked]. We can also be found on the encrypted messaging app called Wire, which is available for desktop, Android and Apple devices (@mrdead or @wireglitch for invites to the PASCAL channel.)<br>PASCAL has snacks and drinks for some dollars and cents, though everyone is welcome to bring their own food and drink.<br>Final Note: if you RSVP and are no longer able to make it, please do take the time to change your RSVP so that someone else may attend, even if it is only an hour before! Thanks!</p> |

CHIFOO Event: Ethics In The Age Of Artificial Intelligence
Roll back
| description |
CHIFOO presents "Ethics In The Age Of Artificial Intelligence" with Cennydd Bowles, Cennydd Ltd!
We mistakenly believe that technology is neutral; that inert objects cannot have moral characteristics. And so we make embarrassing blunders – racist chatbots, manipulative research, privacy violations – that undermine trust and harm those we should help.
This is a dangerous trajectory. We urgently need a deeper ethical dialogue about emerging technology, and interaction design's role within it. This session, informed by many months of ongoing research, will discuss:
-Why companies make poor ethical decisions,
-The development of ethical thinking in other morally-charged disciplines,
-Methods of engaging users in the ethics of emerging technology,
-Ways for designers to engage positively and affect ethical outcomes, so that design decisions benefit not only ourselves but our wider communities and the world at large.
About The Speaker
Cennydd Bowles' (@Cennydd) biography will be published shortly.
CHIFOO is celebrating its 25th anniversary all year long! Come join CHIFOO for our ninth speaker event for 2018's theme "Do the Right Thing- HCI Ethics: Where Do We Start?".

Interviewing for a new job can be a stressful proposition. It is hard to know what to expect and even harder to prepare for it. Each company evaluates its candidates differently. Luckily, some upfront investment and preparation can really go a long way in helping you distinguish yourself from the rest of the candidates. In this seminar guided by an engineering leader at Elemental, we will cover some common interviewing practices for technical interviews and what you may be able to do to get ready. We plan to cover many beneficial topics:
• Morning preparation, attire, mindset
• Preparation for the non-technical parts
• How to study for the coding interview
• How to execute the coding test
Due to the level of interaction required, attendance will be capped at 40. Never fear: we will be organizing this same event bi-monthly because we want everyone to have access to this session!
Agenda:
5:30 p.m. Doors open
5:45 p.m. Introduction
6:00 p.m. Session begins
7:00 p.m. Session ends

Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome. |

Wednesday, October 10, 2018 Peer mentoring, NLP presentation and StarSpace Embedding paper review
Roll back

We'll have a short presentation on deep NLP and review the paper "StarSpace: Embed All The Things!"
The major vendors in cloud-based services are starting to provide machine learning as a service, such as Google Cloud AutoML Natural Language and Azure Language Understanding (LUIS). Jim Tyhurst will give a brief demonstration of IBM Watson Natural Language Classifier service (https://www.ibm.com/watson/services/natural-language-classifier/), which enables you to build a custom classifier with no programming. Just create a new instance and submit training data. When the system has finished training, you can submit a document through a web API. The system responds with JSON, giving a list of some possible categories with a confidence score associated with each category. We will discuss some of the advantages and disadvantages of this service.
StarSpace: Embed All The Things! - describes a general-purpose neural embedding model that can solve a wide variety of problems: labeling tasks such as text classification, ranking tasks such as information retrieval/web search, collaborative filtering-based or content-based recommendation, embedding of multi-relational graphs, and learning word, sentence or document level embeddings. https://arxiv.org/abs/1709.03856 |
