AgilePDX - Virtual Pub Lunch: Comparing Scrum, Lean, Kanban, XP, and other methods
Roll back
| description |

Have traffic and work schedules prevented you from joining an agile event on a topic which could help you or your teams? Then a virtual "pub lunch" may be the answer!
This agile lunch discussion is a collaborative effort between Seattle and Portland agile minds, and we're hoping it won't stop there. The event is held on a Zoom conference line. We've learned using video is best, and you might consider your environment before joining -- find a quiet space where you won't be interrupted or feel self conscious. We're monitoring chat as a back channel, so if you can't find a spot in the discussion, add your question in chat and our hosts will try to work it in.
**Topic:**
Agile thinking: Compare Scrum, Lean, Kanban, XP and any other methodologies you have used. What has worked? What hasn't? Maybe one methodology is better suited for certain situations or work efforts. Or you have seen great success going beyond frameworks and methodologies. Join us and tell us about the spices in your kitchen, and let's compare notes!
**Please RSVP at our Meetup event and get the zoom connection info:**

_Note: Register here for the pizza and pop headcount, please: https://www.meetup.com/AgilePDX-User-Group-Portland-Metro/events/255230595/_
Ever had a project go very, very badly? Ever had a team completely fall apart? Ever suddenly discover that the underlying assumptions, attitudes, beliefs, and aspirations of the group weren't what you thought?
Rest assured, you're not alone. Welcome to the world of complex systems. Every one of these things (and more) have happened to the presenter of this talk. Join Michael as he shares his own journeys and the journeys of other adventurers, in an attempt to devise better tools for managing our (mis)adventures.
Speaker Bio:
Michael is a veteran of numerous software development adventures. He's built software for power companies and banks, for the trucking industry and education, for internet start-ups and established companies. Some have been spectacular successes...others, not so much. He's currently delving into the intersection of complexity theory and cognitive science, as seen through the lens of wilderness adventuring, in an attempt to improve our chances of survival.

Portland Linux/Unix Group: Open Source and POSIX tools for Windows

Portland Linux/Unix Group General Meeting Announcement
Who: Michael Dexter
What: Open Source and POSIX tools for Windows
Where: PSU, 1930 SW 4th Ave. Room FAB 86-01 (Lower Level)
When: Thursday, October 4th, 2018 at 7pm
Why: The pursuit of technology freedom
Stream: http://pdxlinux.org/live
Windows has a hard-earned reputation for appalling security and reliability but, better late than never, has matured into a relatively stable and secure desktop and server problem. Windows can run many popular open source desktop applications and has an incredibly-long history of on-again and off-again supporting Unix/POSIX environments such as Interix/SFU and Cygwin, and now ships with Linux emulation. These tools vary wildly in their depth of frustration to Unix users but do provide a gateway to some extremely-interesting yet intentionally-vague open source opportunities that will be demonstrated.
Many will head to the Lucky Lab at 1945 NW Quimby St. after the meeting.
Rideshares to the Lucky Lab available
PLUG is open to everyone and does not tolerate abusive behavior on its mailing lists or at its meetings. |

***Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-november-happy-hour-tickets-50979835059] is required to gain entry to this event ***
PDXWIT is thrilled to be partnering with Free Geek for a special edition happy hour on #givingtuesday November 27th! The theme of the evening is Supporting our Community. Let’s connect to talk about how we can really show up and support one another.
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase some individuals in our community.
- An employee of Free Geek will provide an introduction to the company and share open job opportunities.
- A guest speaker will share their story of the impact Free Geek and PDXWIT has had on their professional and personal life.
- Elizabeth Stock and Hilary Shohoney will talk about how critical it is for community members to do what they can to support organizations that matter to them.
During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking:
- An activity table where you can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director.
- Table topics to help break the ice.
- A section for job seekers and our sponsors who are hiring, to ensure people get connected.
- A #givingtuesday table with raffle prizes and other goodies for folks who decide to support BOTH FreeGeek and PDXWIT at the event.
Agenda:
4:30 p.m. - Doors open/networking
5:30 p.m. - Introductions, announcements + lightning speakers
6:30 p.m. - Event ends

Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome. |

Election security: How hackable are Oregon's vote scanners?
Roll back
| description |

→ |
As Oregonians know, our state has a mail-in voting system, where all ballots are cast either by mail or by dropping them into collection boxes available throughout the area. But, what happens to your ballot after election workers pick it up, and how do you know that your vote will actually be counted?
Sheila Golden has researched the use of optical scanners in scanning our ballots and will report her findings as to the accuracy of the scanners and the results of the vote tally systems. She'll also update us on the current status of legislative efforts to ensure valid election results in the state of Oregon.
Join us for a great presentation and discussion! We'll have snacks, and there will be an opportunity for networking afterwards. We hope to see you there!
Schedule:
6:00 PM: Doors
6:10 PM: Introductions and news
6:15 PM: Presentation
7:15 PM: Q&A
7:30 PM: Wrap up and networking
Speaker bio:
Sheila Golden is an activist focusing on election integrity, civil liberties/immigrant rights, and climate justice. She works with the ACLU, 350PDX, and currently, Sen. Lew Frederick.

Take the stairs or elevator to the lower level and head East, though you will quickly lose orientation. Look for room 86-01 and note that the parking garage also provides access from a level below for $6, up from $1.50 or so. :( |
