description 10 Billion a Day, 100 Milliseconds Per: Monitoring Real Time Bidding at AdRoll Brian Troutwine of Adroll will be joining us tonight. Adroll uses Erlang to power their high-speed, never-stop online advertising services. That's right, 10 billion transactions a day. Additional details of Brian's talk will be posted as we get closer, but you can bet it won't be dull. Stay tuned! - Steve 10 Billion a Day, 100 Milliseconds Per: Monitoring Real Time Bidding at AdRoll Brian Troutwine of Adroll will be joining us tonight. Adroll uses Erlang to power their high-speed, never-stop online advertising services. That's right, 10 billion transactions a day. Brian's talk will provide motivation for the extensive instrumentation of complex computer systems and make the argument that such systems are essential. This talk will provide practical starting points in Erlang projects and maintain a perspective on the human organization around the computer system. Brian will focus on getting started with instrumentation in a systematic way and follow up with the challenge of interpreting and acting on metrics emitted from a production system in a way which does not overwhelm operators’ ability to effectively control or prioritize faults in the system. He’ll use historical examples and case studies from my work to keep the talk anchored in the practical. Talk objectives: Brian hopes to convince the audience of two things: • monitoring and instrumentation is an essential component of any long-lived system and • it's not so hard to get started, after all. He’ll keep a clear-eyed view of what works and is difficult in practice so that the audience can make a reasoned decision after the talk.

description nil Reading through technical books in a group is a great way to learn. You can stay motivated by reading together; better apply what you are reading by actively communicating it, as well as hearing others perspectives that will help you better understand the book. Even if you're a more experienced developer it's a great way to keep your skill sharp and share your wisdom and experience. If none of that is convincing just come and have fun with fellow ruby developers! We are starting a new book [Confident Ruby](http://www.confidentruby.com/) by Avdi Grimm. This week we will discuss up to page 112 (4.12 Reject unworkable values with preconditions). Please come having read the chapters and ready to discuss it. Make sure to grab food before.

Bring your war stories and questions on down to Ringlers where we will solve the Agile world's problems with regard to managers, power, and empowered Agile teams over beer and pub grub from 12p to 1p. create Calagator::Event 1250468492 SQAUG Presents: The Importance of Abstraction in Automation Projects Roll back

description nil SQAUG Presents: The Importance of Abstraction in Automation Projects at Con-Way 2055 NW Savier, Portland, OR 97209 on Wednesday May 20, 2015 5:30pm until 7:30pm Event is FREE and Open to the Public The majority of automation projects fail, most within the first 6-12 months. Initially it’s easy to put something together that works for a small number of test cases, but as the application evolves, the troubleshooting/maintenance needs of the tests quickly overcome the ability of the team. Eventually (around 6-12 months) a new engineer takes over and restarts the automation effort in a new direction, often with the same issues. This presentation will be focused on how to use the OOP concept of Abstraction to reduce the maintenance costs of automation and extend the life of your frameworks. Additional benefits will be discussed, like the ability to change the Automation Technology without rebuilding all your tests. These concepts will work with 3rd party automation products like QTP as well as homegrown frameworks. You will get the most value from abstraction when its added at the beginning of the projects, but we will discuss how they can be leverages in larger, existing frameworks. Level: Intermediate. Knowledge of automation concepts along with some basic understanding of development practices will be assumed. All code examples will be shown in C#, but the concepts will apply to any tool or language. description nil The (mostly) unspoken reality of startups is that success is the rarity. So, when you’re fighting the battle every day to make things work, yet only hearing about Company A getting yet another round of capital, or Business Z being acquired, it’s easy to feel like you’re a failure. But your success doesn't have to look like everyone else's. Which is good, since it probably won’t. And honestly, sometimes failure isn't so bad. This month’s Tech Tuesday is about the difficulties faced in building, launching, and keeping a startup afloat. We’ve put together a panel of local entrepreneurs who will be sharing their stories, talking about the struggles they’ve faced as founders, and discussing what they’ve learned so far. We’ll also have an Advisor to numerous startups sharing his perspective, insights, and tips. Panelists: • Kevin Dewhitt, Founder, PDO Technologies, Inc • Josh Carter, CEO/Co-Founder, Plunk • Paul Wagner, CEO/Co-Founder, CloudEngage • Paige Hendrix, Founder, ClientJoy • Dylan Boyd, Advisor Moderator: • Sara Morrow, Talent Partner, eBay Marketplaces The combined backgrounds, experience, and personalities of our panelists should provide for a fun, interesting, and educational evening. I hope you’ll join us! RSVP here: http://bit.ly/1e02bPw * Pizza and sodas will be provided * Doors open at 5:45pm, Presentation begins at 6:30pm * The main lobby doors lock at 7pm.
