Portland Startup Summit 2.0.1
Roll back
| description |
Portland is the next big thing.
You're invited to Portland Startup Summit 2.0.1, taking place at Holocene (1001 SE Morrison St.) from 11 AM to 7 PM on Monday, July 13.
Half-day tickets are FREE while supplies last. Get them here.
Brought to you by the team behind SF Beta, Startup Happy Hour, and Dev-to-Dev Summit, we've put together an all-star lineup of speakers from the Portland startup scene, with some very special guests from Silicon Valley.
Register now and join our online community:
http://www.portlandstartupsummit.com
And now, the agenda:
THE POWER OF THE PORTLAND BRAND
Portland is more than just a city – it's a global brand. Nobody understands this better than Marcus Harvey, Founder of Portland Gear and the ever-popular @Portland instagram account. Rather than building a novel identity from scratch, this talk encourages founders to co-brand with Portland from day one – a tactic embraced not only by Marcus, but by this very summit.
• Marcus Harvey, Founder, Portland Gear
THE FUTURE OF FOOD
This feature session reflects upon the rapidly evolving Portland food scene, sharing the stories and viewpoints from three local leaders in the booming industry. This panel will share the personal stories from the visionaries behind companies and brands that people know; explore different food startup business models (eg. What kind of food startup is fundable, and by whom?); discuss case studies and examples of successful food startups; and speculate openly and with sweeping hand gestures on the future of food in Portland.
• Erik Wolf, Founder, SavorSearch
• Tom Gillpatrick, Juan Young Professor of Marketing and Food Management, Portland State University
• Sarah Masoni, Product & Process Development Manager, OSU Food Innovation Center
• Matt Milletto, Owner/Partner, Water Avenue Coffee
KEYNOTE: RISE OF THE SILICON VALLEY AMBASSADOR
As Portland and the Bay Area grow ever more interconnected, startups need to be active on both sides of the #SiliconBridge. Portland startups can do this by working with a Silicon Valley Ambassador, a role being pioneered by Bay Area technology veteran Mary Hodder, who works alongside the Portland-based team at Village. This talk will explore the dynamics of a multi-city team and present a vision of the Silicon Valley Ambassador as a new, yet vital, position for Portland startups to consider.
• Mary Hodder, Co-Founder & CPO, Village
THE PERSONAL IS THE PROFESSIONAL
This talk explores the evolving nature of professionalism in the era of cultural diversity, decentralized media, and personal branding. It's time to rethink assumptions about professional identity, moving towards a framework of empowerment, individuality, and interconnection.
• Dave Barcos, Founder, Bridge Incubator
AN INSIDE LOOK AT INTRAPRENEURSHIP
Innovation matters to big companies as much as small ones. In a process called "intrapreneurship," large organizations empower champions to create and scale new opportunities. In many ways the best of both worlds – and in many ways more challenging – this talk explores intrapreneurship from the perspective of one its most experienced practitioners.
• Jay Fayloga, Intrapreneur & Advisor
STARTING UP WITHOUT INVESTORS
Drawing on the success stories of local crowdfunded startups, this panel examines non-traditional sources of capital in an increasingly diverse funding landscape. Panelists will discuss both the advantages and drawbacks to non-traditional fundraising, sharing success stories and lessons learned in the process.
• Thubten Comerford, Founder, WePost Media
• Kristen Gallagher, Founder, Edify Education Design
• Helga Waage, Co-Founder & CTO, Mobilitus
• Tekin Tatar, CEO & Co-Founder, BeFunky

Startup Happy Hour!
Roll back
| description |

Startup Happy Hour! is a friendly, informal gathering of like-minded people from the Portland Startup Scene.
There are no pitches, no nametags, and no agenda – just hanging out, making new connections, and enjoying each other's company.
We're meeting this Friday at 4:30 PM at the Green Dragon.
When you arrive, please gather in the area by the back bar. We request that guests mingle around freely rather than clustering around a single table - this makes it easier for everyone to meet each other and network effectively.
You are welcome to arrive and leave at leisure -- the start and end times function within a fluid continuum. That said, we find that the event works best when most people arrive within the first 15 minutes or so.
Hope to see you there!
Please RSVP: http://www.meetup.com/StartupHappyHour/events/nhkbjlytlblc/
Thank you. |

Roll back
| description |

The Women in Technology, Coding, and Hacking (WITCH) second event will be held on July 16th at the Jaguar Land Rover R&D Labs in NW Portland. These events give us the opportunity to share our experiences, make new friends, provide informal mentorship, and strengthen Portland’s community of women in technology. Come celebrate summer with snacks and drinks, network, learn about all the groups serving women in computing and technology in PDX, and hatch fun plans for future collaborations!
Doors will open at 5:30, and at 6:00pm we'll have a quick welcome by organizing groups and sponsors. Food and drinks will be provided, so please RSVP so we can plan accordingly. Looking forward to seeing everyone there!
WITCH is a collaboration of the Portland women in tech groups Lesbians Who Tech, ChickTech, Girl Develop It, Women Who Code, PDX WIT, and more! It was created to bring our members together to cross-pollinate and provide support to all. Our first event, a holiday happy hour, was a great success and we're excited to make this a biannual event.

AgilePDX Dntn Pub Lunch: How to be an Outstanding Servant Leader
Roll back
| description |
Is being an "outstanding Servant Leader" a contradiction in terms? How does someone who facilitates the success of others see progress along a desirable career trajectory? How do you know whether you're being the best Servant Leader you can be? Where can you learn more?
The Pub Lunchers chose this topic as an evolution of the discussion on managers and power.
The Scrum Guide identifies Servant Leadership as the model that Scrum Masters should use, and this approach to leadership is considered desirable among Agilists whether or not they are Scrum Masters. But, what is servant leadership?
Come on down to Ringlers on Burnside on 7/10 (NOTE CHANGE TO ADJUST FOR JULY 4th) and talk it through with people who have been there, done the homework, have the stripes to prove it or want to be there do that and get the stripes.
We'll be in the back starting promptly at noon to wrestle with this perennially attractive topic. |

After presentations we'll have more socializing time.
# Thanks to New Relic for providing the venue and beer, pizza & snacks this month!
#
ARRIVING BY BIKE? Cyclists are welcome to park their bikes in the New Relic office. Bikes are not allowed in the building lobby, however, and must use the freight elevator. To get your bike up to the 29th floor, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." You can get up by buzzing in with the intercom, and saying you're here for New Relic. Ride on up to the 29th floor, you'll easily find the bike parking.
<em>ABOUT THE GROUP: The Portland Ruby Brigade, also known as pdxruby and pdx.rb, is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland, Oregon area. The group welcomes all programmers interested in the language and its implementations, tools, libraries and frameworks, such as Ruby on Rails. The group has been meeting since August 2002 for presentations, demos and discussions. Every month 35-75 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for Ruby. If you'd like to present or have a topic you'd like discussed, please post to the <a href="http://groups.google.com/group/pdxruby">mailing list</a>. The group usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month, "Ruby Tuesday" -- see you there!

CATFISH: WHY YOUR AUDIENCE IS DECEIVING YOU.
(Catfish: To lure someone into a relationship by means of a fictional online persona.)
In the love game of marketing and user profiling, a common occurrence is surfacing—your audience is catfishing you… and you’re falling for it.
You rely on your audience’s profiles to describe themselves: male or female, median household income, and interests. Your narrow questions lead to vast assumptions. Unknowingly, individuals are defining their entire online persona with just a single answer, an answer which then defines your segmentation and content strategy. You speak to, and create content for, a stereotype rather than a real human being.
By using non-intrusive tactics, you’ll learn how to carefully mine out your audience's true desires and needs as individuals, allowing their actions to speak for them. Listening to those actions, you’ll be able to create strategic segmentations, and provide more personalized content, that will help to drive authentic brand engagement.
When you ring the doorbell, make sure you know who’s on the other side.
This presentation is lead by two members of the eROI team...
Cher Fuller - Digital Strategist
Tatiana Mac - Design Lead |

TiE Oregon Pitch Club featuring Ana Andueza
Roll back
| description |

TiE Members: FREE / Public: $25
When you are pitching to investors, they will want to know whether they can trust you with their money: inevitably you're going to get to the question of what the financial projections for your business are. When are you going to make money and how much?
One thing that will be 100% certain about your numbers: they will be wrong.
However, what is actually more important, is how you arrived at those numbers. Investors will be more interested in hearing what assumptions you made about the number of customers you are expecting to get, how much it costs to sell to them, what the costs are of producing your product or services, how much staff you will need, etc. etc. You have to demonstrate that you know your market, your abilities and the things you will need to make your vision a profitable reality.
For some entrepreneurs, this is a really daunting topic. However, you must be able to understand your business and the numbers behind it, before you can convince anyone else to come along for the ride.
Join us for TiE Oregon Pitch Club where our July speaker, Ana Andueza, will shed light on how to construct your financial model.
As a CFO as well as an angel investor, Ana has broad experience in dealing with startups and finances.
Currently the CFO at CFO with Criterion Brock, she is a TiE member, angel investor, and vice chair of the OEN's Angel Oregon. Previously she was the chief financial officer for Irwin Commercial Finance and U.S. Bancorp Equipment Finance. Earlier in her career, Andueza held senior accounting positions with U.S. Bank and Deloitte and Touche.
Join us for this talk, networking and refreshments as well as pitch practice and actionable feedback! |

Join us at the next PDX Design Research Group meeting on Wednesday, July 15th, 2015!
Tell Us How You Really Feel: Subconscious Metrics Meet Product UX
Elise Lind, Thug Design
The variety and scope of project requests from clients is an interesting and often complicated part of agency work. Elise Lind will discuss what happened when one of Thug's clients wanted to use subconscious measurements to evaluate the user experience of a product. She and her team had to put aside their initial skepticism and figure out which of the various methods would be useful for design research. Explored methods included: EEG, galvanic skin response, forced-choice reaction times, guided visualizations and micro-expressions. Elise will share the good and bad parts of that journey, and talk about recent advances to help improve the value of these methods.
Elise is a senior research strategist and UX researcher at Thug Design, a Portland agency specializing in UX research and design. She has been doing a mix of user research and interaction design for the past 20 years, in agencies and with in-house groups at Intel.
Date: Wednesday, July 15th, 2015
Time: Networking 6:30 – 7:00 pm, presentation 7:00 – 8:00 pm
Location: eBay's downtown offices, 1400 SW 5th Ave., 3rd Floor
Informal networking is from 6:30 – 7:00, with Elise’s talk to begin promptly at 7:00.
