create Calagator::Event 1250468686 TiE Speaker Series: Confessions of An Entrepreneur (and Investor) – Robin Jones Maloney Roll back

description nil TiE Members: FREE; Public: $25 Register at the link above! Join us for Confessions Of An Entrepreneur (and Investor) with TiE Charter Member and Board Member Robin Jones Maloney. In a past life, Robin was an investor. She has also been an entrepreneur and founder, startup advisor and mentor. Currently she is an executive with a company that went from startup (Geoloqi) to being acquired by ESRI. Along the way, she got a unique view on entrepreneurship from many different positions and vantage points. At our upcoming event, Robin will share some compelling confessions with us, such as: insights from her early career "on the inside" as a corporate venture capital manager, and some of the less-than-entrepreneur-friendly terminology she and her co-investors used; the elements of a pitch and business plan that she would pay closest attention to as an investor, and why; and her (torturous) experience raising funds for her first company, and the differences between the Silicon Valley and Oregon funding environment.

create Calagator::Event 1250468685 Talk about "Better Stories, Better Technologies" Roll back

description nil Note: We'll give away one free 3-day pass to OSCON 2015, good July 22-24. Sign up when you arrive, and we'll raffle off the pass after the talk is complete! ******** If you attended the Write The Docs 2015 Conference, you know the importance of User Stories, and how they lead to more readable documentation. On July 14 (Bastille Day!), Amelia Abreu will give us her take on the User Story, when she talks about: * Better Stories, Better Technologies: ********* Technologies all have stories behind them, some we hear, some we don’t. From the genesis of a product idea, to the way that technologists characterize their work, to documentation, to startup origin stories. Development frameworks operationalize stories as a way to build features. Documentation tells a story, and speaks to certain stories about our users. How can documentarians think critically about the way that we tell stories? How do we confront times when some stories get told over others? How do we talk about our successes, and how do we not talk about our failures? Whose stories get heard: how do women, people of color, disabled people, and “non-technical” workers get left out of the stories we hear? In this talk, I’ll explore some of the ways that stories and storytelling are used in building technologies. I’ll share what I’ve found in looking at stories in technology, and propose some practical solutions for telling better stories and using them in building products.

create Calagator::Event 1250468684 AgilePDX Dntn Pub Lunch: Making the Business and Technical Case for Pair Programming and TDD Roll back

description nil This June Cotten Blackwell's Agile team started a 3-month pilot adoption of pair programming and TDD – almost exactly as practiced during Coderetreats (http://coderetreat.org/facilitating/structure-of-a-coderetreat), which they used to kick off their pilot and can’t recommend strongly enough. So exactly how did they get management and team approval (and active support) for TDD/pair programming? Well, they are definitely blessed with Product Managers (and Directors) who are very big-picture, and highly open to persuasive business cases grounded in data and metrics. But, they think that *how* they made the business and technical case for pair programming and TDD is worth sharing – and that much of it might be highly applicable to *your* team. Bio: Cotten Blackwell is an engineering manager, Agile champion and Swift developer with over 15 years experience leading, coaching and mentoring software development teams. For the last four years he’s been doing that at Huron Consulting Group, where he’s known for his focus on improving team health and employee development and retention. Cotten has driven continuous improvements in Huron’s mastery of Agile and Lean Startup fundamentals, and has leveraged multiple software teams to more consistently, more deeply engage in risk identification, analysis and mitigation. RSVP's to [email protected] very welcome but not required.

As usual, I'm really excited about these speakers. update Calagator::Event 1250468659 UserOnboard Ice Cream Party!! Roll back

description Hello friends! Let's celebrate the glorious Portland summertime together by eating ice cream in a park! I just reviewed Eventbrite's onboarding experience (http://www.useronboard.com/how-eventbrite-onboards-new-users/) and in order to do so, had to come up with an event to post. Ice cream and beer in Col. Summer's Park sounded like a great idea, and when the review was published, a lot of people actually RSVPed. So it's on! UserOnboard will provide the ice cream and probably some beer and we will all supply the good times with chill people. Hello friends! update Calagator::Event 1250468677 Wearable Electronics Kits Roll back

description What's better than buying wearables? Making your own! We'll look at a few wearable development kit options, many are so easy they don't require any specialized knowledge to make the next big thing! We have the pleasure of digging into the WearDuino development kit with its creator Mark Leavitt. WearDuino is a local creation by pdxwhl.org, and is an open platform for innovation in wearable health technology. WearDuino highlights: * Open hardware, firmware, software and physical design * Simple: coin-cell battery, Bluetooth low energy wireless * Modular: experiment freely with sensor innovations * Wearable in multiple body locations with different attachments * Smaller, lighter, thinner and 5x less expensive than Apple Watch We're also thrilled to host Camille Dodson who will show off LilyPad, another Arduino based development kit. It's not as focused on healthcare as WearDuino, but is a great way for Makers to easily get their feet wet building and sharing cool wearable projects. We'll look at other Wearable dev kits as well, and if you have any, feel free to bring them along! We love show and tell. What's better than buying wearables? Making your own! We'll look at a few wearable development kit options, many are so easy they don't require any specialized knowledge to make the next big thing!

We have the pleasure of digging into the WearDuino development kit with its creator Mark Leavitt. WearDuino is a local creation by pdxwhl.org, and is an open platform for innovation in wearable health technology. WearDuino highlights:

• Open hardware, firmware, software and physical design

• Simple: coin-cell battery, Bluetooth low energy wireless

• Modular: experiment freely with sensor innovations

• Wearable in multiple body locations with different attachments

• Smaller, lighter, thinner and 5x less expensive than Apple Watch

We're also thrilled to host Camille Dodson who will show off LilyPad, another Arduino based development kit. It's not as focused on healthcare as WearDuino, but is a great way for Makers to easily get their feet wet building and sharing cool wearable projects.

We'll look at other Wearable dev kits as well, and if you have any, feel free to bring them along! We love show and tell.

create Calagator::Event 1250468675 Use Brand Strategy to Get Noticed and Communicate Smarter Roll back

description nil Reservations: Free for members; $5 for nonmembers At it's core, brand strategy is about understanding your audience's needs, identifying what you have to offer, and then communicating your message in a way that resonates with your audience. Brand strategy tactics can be put to work for your cause, business, or even for personal branding. Workshop attendees will learn brand strategy basics, and leave with an idea of how to put them to work to: * Identify and connect with audiences * Write titles, headlines, and descriptions that resonate with the audience * Use social media to strengthen outreach * Consistently communicate your brand across all touchpoints * Handle partnerships, joint-branding and sub-brands DIY tools, expert tips and resources will also be shared throughout the presentation to empower attendees to implement what they've learned on their own. Content will be geared towards City Club of Portland members, however concepts can be applied to other situations where brand strategy is needed. Alicia Nagel Creative provides brand strategy and graphic design services to companies in Portland and along the West and East coasts. Alicia is able to provide a broad range of services to clients by acting as a strategic hub connected to a network of talented independent contractors and complementary service firms. This model allows flexibility in the range of services she can offer without the high overhead of a large agency. Prior to settling in Portland in 2008, Alicia spent several years in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Boston working as Designer and Brand Storyteller at advertising agencies, design firms and freelance. "Twelve years working in the industry has only grown my passion for what I do," says Alicia. "Branding and design represent a fascinating intersection of psychology, business strategy, visual problem-solving, iconography, and art." Clients include local brands such as City Club of Portland and Moonstruck Chocolate, tech and marketing firms such as Pixe lspoke and LanePR, and quirky start-ups such as Humani Pilates and PDX Empanadas foodcart. update Calagator::Event 1250468660 Free workshop: How to give great presentations (a Devsigner sneak-peek) Roll back

description
On Thursday evening, Devsigner presenter Kristen Gallagher will be giving a special workshop for fellow Devsigner presenters -- and it's open to the public.

The workshop is free.

If you're new to speaking -- or just want to brush up on your skills -- please join us!

Talks aren't fun. Panels aren't fun. Conference talks usually suck for many reasons, but they mostly suck because no one is learning anything and everyone is just staring blankly at the talker. It doesn't have to be this way... it doesn't have to hurt. You’re about to give a talk - a talk that really should be awesome. Come hang out and get your hands dirty with making conference talks that are actually awesome. This talk won't hurt at all - all you have to do is teach, don't talk.

In person: Thursday, June 18, 6:00 PM at Phase2, 514 NW 11th Avenue, Suite 203, Portland, OR

Online: We'll be livestreaming the workshop as well. Check this event listing, which will be updated with a link once we have it.

Takeaways:

get concrete tools to set up your presentations to be as awesome as possible

learn how to be yourself while talking

learn how to create talks that people remember

Kristen Gallagher is the founder of Edify, a consultancy that designs and builds learning experiences that people actually learn from and like. She brings over eight years of instructional design, alternative learning environment experience, event management, business development, and nonprofit education experience to Edify. Recently, her focus has been on building educational experiences that empower people, especially young women and small business owners.

Gallagher’s substantial experience in museum educational programming, facilitation, volunteer management, community organizing, strategic planning, exhibition design and curatorial work, and program management informs her systems-thinking approach to business problem solving.

You need not RSVP to attend.

The Devsigner Conference features sessions and workshops focusing on frontend web design and development techniques, tips and tools. We also aim to inspire our technically inclined creative community with amazing session topics that bridge the gap between art and code.
