create Calagator::Event 1250469373 Former Portland Code School's Student Portfolio Project Showcase Roll back

description nil Portland, OR – November 9th, 2015 - When the Portland Code School unexpectedly shut its doors over the October 16th weekend, midway through the fall term, displaced students and former instructors came together to continue learning on their own, complete their final software projects and display the results of their dedication at their showcase event. When Portland’s tech community heard the news, they responded with an outpouring of support, offering everything from domain hosting and student scholarships to catering. Wirestorm, a globally distributed software development company, which has provided the students with mentors and study space, will host the showcase on Monday, November 16th from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., at their Portland office at Forge Co-working space on the top floor of Tiffany Center, at 1410 SW Morrison Street. The event will showcase ten student teams who will unveil their final projects, which include innovative web applications and iOS-based mobile apps. The project teams have used a variety of technologies to show off the skills they’ve learned, including jQuery, JavaScript, Node.js, Backbone.js, Meteor.js, PostRegSQL, Orchestrate, various APIs, and much more. Students, instructors, mentors, industry recruiters and tech companies are invited to attend the product showcase and honor the tenacity of the students whose mantra has been, “When the going gets tough, the tough get coding.”

create Calagator::Event 1250469368 An Introduction to Pure Data (free DorkbotPDX workshop) Roll back

description nil DorkbotPDX is happy to offer a free workshop as an introduction to Pure Data (Pd). When: Sunday, November 15th, 2015. 1-5pm Where: Ctrl-H Hackerspace, 7608 N. Interstate, PDX, OR Bring: A laptop and headphones Instructors: Jesse Mejia, Alex Norman, Jason Plumb Details: In this 4-hour course, students will learn the basics of Pd and will have fun developing foundational Pd patching skills. Pure Data (Pd) is a free, open-source, community supported data flow language and coding environment with an emphasis on sound, music, and multimedia. It was originally written by Miller Puckette (also the original author of Max/Max MSP) and runs on Linux, Mac OSX, Android, and Windows. Pd has been used widely in the creation of art -- such as music, sound art, visual art, generative, new-media, and interactive art. Pd interfaces readily with MIDI equipment and many popular microcontrollers. We have curriculum posted here: http://dorkbotpdx.org/wiki/intro_to_pd_workshop_2015 Beginners are welcome. No prior computer programming or sound programming experience is required! Notes: Students should attempt to install Pd prior to the workshop...but if not, no biggie. We can help with that! Seating is limited to 20 participants. Please RSVP to [email protected] to reserve a spot. Attendees will respect The DorkbotPDX code of conduct and will be asked to donate.

The Snowdrift.coop platform uses the Yesod web framework written in Haskell. The container represents a modern abstraction for applications and provides the necessary constraints for building robust and self-aware systems on top of the core tenants of distributed computing. In the future the virtual machine will disappear and a logical computer will emerge that stretches across the datacenter and plugs into the global network over high speed links. Some will say this future is more than a decade away, but what if I told you it exists today and it's source code was available on GitHub? In this talk we will take a look at Kubernetes, the open source container management platform, and how it's changing the way we think about compute. create Calagator::Event 1250469354 Journeyman/Apprentice Round Table Roll back

description nil <p>Are you a beginner, just getting started in the land of iOS development, and have some questions you'd like to ask a group of more advanced developers?</p> <p>Are you an iOS developer that's been doing it a while and have lots of juicy knowledge to share with some beginners?</p> <p>Are you somewhere in between these two and just want to hear and contribute to a conversation that those two groups of people might spark?</p> <p>If you answered "yes" to any of those questions, that's what I'd like to do this month! This will be an extremely free-form meeting as we'll need to adapt to what you all bring to it. Have some code you'd like some help with? Bring it. Have some burning questions that have been hard to find just by Googling? Bring 'em! Have some really cool tips you think would help other developers, but you've never really found the right platform from which to share them? This is it! Bring 'em!</p> <p> Show up at 6 for some pre-meeting chatting/networking. Meeting starts at 6:30. We usually wrap up around 8-8:30 and head to Bunk Bar for post-meeting beers.</p> <p> See you there!</p>

create Calagator::Event 1250469351 Galois tech talk: Designing a practical dependently typed language Roll back

description nil <b>abstract:</b> The last decade has seen many success stories for verified programming with dependent types, including the CompCert verified C compiler, verified libraries for concurrency and security, and machine-checked proofs of results like the four color theorem and the Feit-Thompson theorem. Despite these successes, dependently typed languages are rarely used for day-to-day programming tasks. In this talk, I’ll describe several limitations of modern dependently-typed languages that are holding them back from wider adoption for practical programming. I’ll explain the historical and mathematical reasons for these limitations, and describe how we attempted to relax them in the design of the Zombie research language. <b>bio:</b> Chris Casinghino is a Senior Member of the Technical Staff at Draper Laboratory, where he develops static analysis tools in Haskell. In 2014, he completed a PhD in the programming languages group at The University of Pennsylvania. His doctoral research focused on dependently typed programming languages, exploring both their semantics and how to use them to write better programs.
