create Calagator::Event 1250469142 Snowdrift.coop meetup / chat / hack session Roll back

description nil Snowdrift.coop is a volunteer-built non-profit community project focused on a new sustainable matching system to coordinate the global community in better funding shareable freely-licensed works. The Snowdrift.coop platform uses the Yesod web framework written in Haskell. Other technologies and relevant work includes basic HTML/CSS/JavaScript and general design, organizing, and other non-technical tasks. While the community includes people on many continents across the globe, we have a strong Portland foundation with one of the co-founders, the lead developer, and several active volunteers and supporters in the area. At this meetup, we'll mix casual chat with focusing on some refactoring on the Haskell side and hacking on HTML/CSS stuff for the [new design](https://snowdrift.coop/p/snowdrift/blog/new-design-2).

create Calagator::Event 1250469136 ChickTech's Scrum Workshop Roll back

description nil <b>Come to ChickTech’s Scrum Workshop</b> to get a refresher or an introduction to the world of Scrum. For two Wednesday evenings in a row, you will go through the core aspects of the Scrum Framework. This includes why Scrum works, the key players on each Scrum team, and how product development occurs within Scrum. Registration for this event includes both workshop sessions. You can register for the event via <a href="https://www.eventbrite.com/e/chicktechs-scrum-workshop-tickets-18575133725" target="_blank">Eventbrite</a>. Scrum is an agile way to manage a project, usually software development. Agile software development with Scrum is often perceived as a methodology; but rather than viewing Scrum as methodology, <b>think of it as a framework for managing a process</b>. -Mountain Goat Software <b>The Instructor: Austin Richter, Scrum Master</b> Austin, a Certified Scrum Master, has been working within the Scrum Framework for two years. Before that he worked as Project Coordinator on a team that was transitioning from a Waterfall approach to Scrum. <b>Session 1, September 30th: Introduction to Scrum and Building a Backlog </b> The first session will offer an overview/refresher of the Scrum Framework. In this workshop we will explore the differences betwen a Waterfall approach and the Scrum Framework. This will highlight the importance of feedback to a team. We will demonstrate these concepts by constructing a bridge and building backlogs. During the building a backlog activity we will explore the three roles on the Scrum Team. <b>Session 2, October 7th: Sprint Simulation </b> In this workshop you will build something for a customer using the Scrum process. Through this exercise you will go through each step of the Scrum process and produce the necessary artifacts to be successful in a given Sprint. From building a task board to demonstrating your product to the stakeholders, you will be immersed into the scrum process during the Sprint Simulation. <b>By the end of this workshop series</b> you'll have a comprehensive understanding of Scrum. Part of ChickTech’s mission is to retain women in technology. We intend for this event to build community and add skills to resumes. We encourage anyone who wants to practice the Scrum workflow to register for this event! <b>Dates:</b> September 30th and October 7th <b>Time:</b> Doors open at 5:30pm and close around 8:30pm. The sessions will run 6-8pm <b>Location:</b> <a href="http://www.deskhub.com/portland" target="_blank">DeskHub </a> 334 NW 11th Ave Portland, OR 97209 Registration pays for dinner both evenings, along with the class costs. Any amount left over supports ChickTech: High School. A big thank you to our event location provider, DeskHub! <b>ChickTech: Career events are open to all genders with a focus on women.</b>

update Calagator::Event 1250469067 eBay Tech Tuesdays: "To Sell or Not to Sell? That is the Question." Roll back

description Happy September! This month's Tech Tuesday is just a few weeks away, and we're shifting gears a bit and bringing the focus back around to the entrepreneur. During the course of starting, running, and growing a business, almost every founder will ask themselves at least once, but more likely numerous times, “Should I sell?” And then they will go back and forth tossing around all the reasons why or why not, usually losing a lot of sleep and sanity in the process. For September's Tech Tuesday we've put together a panel of local founders who answered that hard question. You'll hear about why they chose to sell or not, if they’d make the same decision if given the opportunity again, if they'd do anything differently next time, and more. Panelists · James Keller, former co-founder of Small Society which was purchased by Walmart Labs in 2011 · Josh Reich, CEO & co-founder of Simple, which was purchased by BBVA in 2014 · David Nelsen, Investor and Entrepreneur, and former CEO and Co-Founder of Giftango Corporation, which was purchased by InComm in 2012 Moderator: Sara Morrow, Talent Partner, ebay Marketplaces Not only do I expect this will be a very interesting – and entertaining - evening of insights, experiences, and shoulda/coulda/wouldas... but what you learn might help you stay a little more sane and rested when it comes time to ask yourself, "To sell or not sell?" RSVP here: http://bit.ly/1OboEbC See you on the 29th! -- Doors open at 5:45pm and we’ll have pizza & sodas for you. Presentation starts at 6:30pm. Happy September! At the workshop, you'll receive a handful of useful, editable materials that you can use again and again. We look forward to meeting you and sharing the HCD framework with you - to revolutionize HR! This workshop is co-taught by Kristen Gallagher of Edify and Nitya Wahklu of Drawing Bridges: Nitya Wakhlu is the founder at Drawbridge Innovations LLC, where she specializes in using Visual Thinking and Experiential Learning to create whole-brained experiences that support learning and change. Nitya has a bachelor's degree in Electrical and Telecommunications engineering and an MBA focused on human resources and organization development. She brings over eight years of facilitation experience working with corporate, government and non-profit groups across North America, India, Africa, and Europe. Nitya is best known for her work in learning design and visual facilitation. As a visual facilitator, Nitya brings a ninja-like listening ability to the table. She distills what she hears and creates a large-scale visual mural of key insights and emerging conversation patterns. This live visual capture prevents precious insight from being lost, stimulates higher levels of group creativity and helps the group truly “see the big picture”. Things that make her eyes shine include: working with smart and diverse groups, learning about the brain, and studying behavior change. Find her at http://www.nityawakhlu.com/ Kristen Gallagher is the founder of Edify, a learning design consultancy that helps technology and creative companies grow their employees, customers, and businesses. She brings over eight years of instructional design, alternative learning environment experience, event management, business development, and nonprofit education experience to Edify. Recently, her focus has been on building educational experiences that empower people, especially new employees, women and small business owners. Gallagher has presented research, workshops, and facilitated experiences at conferences and events of all sizes for over six years, focusing primarily on art history, museum, and education topics. She has experience presenting for a variety of audiences, though she prefers to focus on adult learning and treats "presentations" as learning experiences rather than show-and-tell sessions. Effective, efficient programs, events, and strategies are what motivate her, and in every project, she strives to engage teams and stakeholders to uncover the solutions for their needs (and often solve problems they didn't know they had!) create Calagator::Event 1250469129 Reactive-Interactive Approaches to Visualization of F# jobs Roll back

description nil <p>Join <a href="https://twitter.com/lenadroid">Alena Dzenisenka</a> as she presents "<b>Reactive-Interactive Approaches to Visualization of F# jobs</b>"</p> <p>This talk will show lightweight approaches for web based visualization of server side computations for data science jobs written in F#. These jobs you'd often launch some analytic algorithms on input data and the algorithms may run either on a single local server or be distributed across the cloud, clusters or other locations. There can be different data sources, different places or locations where algorithms are being performed, and various kinds of jobs that produce the updated overall result each time when data changes, updates or new data comes. This talk will cover these concepts and ideas.</p> <p>An example we can use is with MBrace or other cloud computing framework for performing jobs. If updates are frequent and it's important to keep an eye on these metrics, having an interactive visualization for the results is important.</p> <p>During the talk we will take a number of jobs, go through the options we have and see the examples of how to use and combine F#, SignalR web sockets and JS together for visualization of various computing job results to display them in a beautiful web interactive and flexible way.</p>

create Calagator::Event 1250469122 Computer programming for non programmers, meeting for prospective students. Roll back

description nil YOU: are interested in programming but have limited or no experience. Perhaps you're an artist who wants to work with digital tools including Processing and Arduino. Perhaps you're a machinist who would like to write software to direct a laser cutter or CAM system. Maybe you want an edge for you spreadsheet macros. Or you'd like to start a small business on the web and would like to do some of the work yourself. The goal of this course will be to give a solid foundation in theory and practice so that you have the context to pick up and use any individual programming environment. The goal of this meeting, is to determine a course format, length, and structure based upon student goals. In any case, at the end you will have a software project you've created, and can show off to your friends! Bring: (1) Note taking ability. (2) Laptop computer, if you have one. (3) Food or snack to share. (4) Friends, anybody who you think may be interested. (5) This meeting is free, but if you want to enroll (and weigh in on class format) bring $5. (6) Adherence to this code of conduct. This class is not affiliated in any way with the Plone project, I'm just borrowing their code of conduct. https://plone.org/foundation/materials/foundation-resolutions/code-of-conduct Agenda: (1) Class format, several alternatives will be presented. (2) Discussion of student goals. (3) Discussion of time line and homework requirements.

description Reading through technical books in a group is a great way to learn. You can stay motivated by reading together; better apply what you are reading by actively communicating it, as well as hearing others perspectives that will help you better understand the book. Even if you're a more experienced developer it's a great way to keep your skill sharp and share your wisdom and experience. If none of that is convincing just come and have fun with fellow ruby developers! We are starting a new book [Working With Ruby Threads](http://www.jstorimer.com/products/working-with-ruby-threads) by Jesse Storimer. We will be discussing chapters 6-8. Please come having read the chapters and ready to discuss it. Pizza will be provided! ##Book Summary *Threading and concurrency are hot topics in the Ruby community.* *Want to join the conversation?* *You've probably heard people around you talking mutexes, race conditions, or the GIL. Do you wonder what the heck they're talking about?* *This book is a gentle introduction to these concepts and will give you the knowledge you need to become your teams resident concurrency expert.* Reading through technical books in a group is a great way to learn. Bring your pitch and pitch deck to receive actionable and valuable feedback from fellow entrepreneurs who have been through it or are going through it. You never know, there may be an investor or two sprinkled throughout the crowd. Not fully comfortable pitching? Come be part of the audience and learn by watching and providing feedback to others. However, it pays not to just be a watcher; you will definitely get the most benefit from this event by getting up and practicing your pitch! Many went before you, lived to tell the tale (we don’t bite!) and got a lot of actionable feedback!
