create Calagator::Event 1250469189 Haskell Office Hours Roll back

description nil Welcome to Portland Haskell Office Hours! Bring your projects, or just your excitement for learning. We will still be taking feedback on the format of the meetup, the scheduling, and anything else that will help make this a valuable resource for you. If you are not able to attend, let us know if there's anything we can do to help make it work in the future. As before, the front door of the building will lock at 6pm; if you get locked out, contact us via Meetup, and we'll let you in. -- About Haskell Office Hours: Show up with a project you'd like to share or a problem that you're stuck on, and we'll learn together in small, supportive groups! An "Office Hours" meetup is an opportunity for people of all skill levels to come together, learn, and have fun. Our goal is to focus on inclusion and active participation through teaching and mentorship. The meetup is hosted at Galois, which uses Haskell extensively in industry, and is well-attended by Galwegians who are eager to share their excitement for Haskell and functional programming. This group is very new, so you still have an opportunity to shape how we do things. If the schedule doesn't work for you, or if we can do anything to help you feel more safe and welcome, let us know!

create Calagator::Event 1250469188 Ruby Book Club Roll back

description nil Reading through technical books in a group is a great way to learn. You can stay motivated by reading together; better apply what you are reading by actively communicating it, as well as hearing others perspectives that will help you better understand the book. Even if you're a more experienced developer it's a great way to keep your skill sharp and share your wisdom and experience. If none of that is convincing just come and have fun with fellow ruby developers! We are starting a new book [Working With Ruby Threads](http://www.jstorimer.com/products/working-with-ruby-threads) by Jesse Storimer. We will be discussing chapters ('Wrap Your Threads in an Abstraction' - 'How Sidekiq Uses Celluloid'). Please come having read the chapters and ready to discuss it. Pizza will be provided! ##Book Summary *Threading and concurrency are hot topics in the Ruby community.* *Want to join the conversation?* *You've probably heard people around you talking mutexes, race conditions, or the GIL. Do you wonder what the heck they're talking about?* *This book is a gentle introduction to these concepts and will give you the knowledge you need to become your teams resident concurrency expert.*

create Calagator::Event 1250469187 Hack Oregon Glorious Demo Night! Roll back

description nil <b>Hack Oregon Glorious Demo Night! After nearly six months of data-sleuthing, creative hustle, and late nights of coding…. the fruits of our labor will all be revealed. We’re launching five open source projects to improve the quality of civic life and bring a big-data perspective to big issues in right here in Oregon. Every project was lovingly built by committed volunteer focus teams from our community. Meet the teams and vote for your favorite for a bit of friendly competition on demo night. <br> <br> <b>Sneak Peek of our Launch Lineup: <br> <b>Crop Compass <b>Theme: Agriculture <br> Teaser: Oregon is one of the richest growing regions on the planet, and we’re known for exporting some of the highest quality crops and commodities all over the world---but what are we getting in exchange for our resources? Learn more about what we’re growing across our state, and what we’re buying and bringing in. How do factors like seasonality, soil quality, market demand, and subsidies affect the vitality of our landscape, agribusiness, and the sustainability of our crops? <br> <b>Raise Effect <b>Theme: Job Economy <br> Teaser: Next session, our state legislature will debate a minimum wage increase in Oregon--- but how can we understand the effect of raising the minimum wage across a spectrum of different dollar amount increases? What would this mean for families and regions with different costs of living across Oregon? We’re putting the power in your hands to balance multiple factors and imagine what you would do if you were a legislator. <br> <b>40-40-100 <b>Theme: Education <br> Teaser: In 2011, Oregon made a strong commitment to achievement in statewide education. The 40-40-20 Goal aims to have 40% of Oregonians to receive bachelor degree or higher, 40% to have an associate or vocational degree, and 100% high school graduation by the year 2025. We’ll take take a data-driven look at the student journey navigating enrollment to degree attainment, and check in to see how Oregon is doing in relationship to our goal. <br> <b>Plot PDX <b>Theme: Urban Development <br> Teaser: It’s no secret that Portland is going through a period of incredible urban growth, and many feel like the decisions that are being made today will impact our city for decades to come. It’s also no secret that this issue has many different points of view and not everyone sees the sees information the same way. We’ve pulled together datasets on all things Urban Development, current and historic, and put them at your fingertips to explore trends, keep track of current activity, and tell your own story. <br> <b>Behind the Curtain <b>Theme: Campaign Finance <br> Teaser: Even though campaign finance has some of the most strict regulations around transparency and reporting, for many of us, the way influence works in politics seems like a total mystery. Well, not anymore. We’ve opened up everything from school board to senate races to show patterns in relationships, timing, movement in money, and exactly how much your vote is worth (and what you can do to be immune to campaign media). </b></b></b></b></b></b></b></b></b></b></b></b>

create Calagator::Event 1250469180 Let's Talk about AppleTV Roll back

description nil <p>I got an AppleTV Dev Kit so I thought it'd be good to have this month's meeting based on that. I'll go over what it took to port the app that we did for the WatchKit Workshop a few months ago (Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock... aka RoShamBo) to tvOS. Here's the <a href="https://github.com/pdx-ios/tvOS-workshop">repo</a> if you wanted to preview it.</p> <p>If you've been working on an AppleTV app and want to share with the group, there will be plenty of time for that as well.</p> <p>I need to double check with my lawyer... but I'll probably bring the device in so anyone who's interested can get some hands-on time with it. I'm also happy to run code on it if you've got something you want to try out.</p> <p>Hope to see you there!</p> <p>Ryan</p>

create Calagator::Event 1250469155 DesignSpeaks Presents: Peak Performance Roll back

description nil DESIGNSPEAKS exists to explore design within the multidisciplinary: architecture, brand, communications, experience, film, fashion, graphic, industrial. We establish an interface within the context of real life, supporting the most compelling regional voices in design, and talk through to the heart of the practice. PEAK PERFORMANCE Data, Design, and Driving the Future October 8, 2015 7 to 9 pm / 52 Limited Moderated by Tony Thacker Tony Thacker is a longtime auto industry authority, author and book publisher based in Los Angeles. Most recently, Tony was Executive Director of the World of Speed, an educational motorsports-themed museum, in Wilsonville. He served as executive director of the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum in Pomona and the marketing director for the famed SO-CAL Speed Shop for 10 years. Led by the enigmatic Tony Thacker, consider this a glimpse into a not-so-distant future of driverless cars negotiating rush hour traffic and carless drivers using augmented reality. We’ll trace the path of Salem-based Nick McMillen from passionate video gamer to professional racecar driver and learn how the virtual and augmented training environments being pioneered by Keith Maher in Hillsboro give drivers like McMillen an edge on the track. Then we'll take on engineering feats from self-driving trucks to land speed motorcycle design with Daimler Trucks North America's former vehicle dynamics manager Matt Markstaller and contemplate the future of automotive design with Aaron Pizzuti, a former design manager at Chrysler. From Pikes Peak to peak performance, where is technology taking us and who exactly is in the driver's seat? Doors open at 6 pm. Come early for food, drinks and virtual reality demos. Your ticket includes the presentation, dinner, hosted bar, and a limited edition poster. With Panelists: Keith Maher is a leading authority in automotive simulation - from programming to podiums, he provides custom simulation solutions to automotive problems. With 22 years in high technology and a motorsports obsession, he founded Maher Solutions, LLC to help people in the automotive industry achieve their goals through simulation. Matt Markstaller is a mechanical engineer who has worked in various capacities for Daimler Trucks North America for 27 years. He designed and built numerous prototype vehicles including Pikes Peak Hill Climb trucks, test facilities, and wind tunnels. By night, he designs and builds vehicles from open road racers to Bonneville record streamliners. Nick McMillen is a professional racing driver for Nissan. Born in Salem, he took an unconventional path to professional driving by winning the 2013 GT Academy, an international virtual-to-reality contest that allows the best Gran Turismo players to compete for the opportunity to become professional drivers. He won the Dubai 24 and Silverstone in 2014. Aaron Pizzuti is a designer specializing in automotive, footwear and consumer product design and creative direction. Following a life long passion for both automobiles and art, he spent nine years at Chrysler as design manager and senior product designer. He's currently Creative Director at Under Armour in Portland.

update Calagator::Event 1250468987 It Takes Two to Make a Thing Go Right — RefreshPDX Roll back

description <h3>21 October 2015 — Doors at 6pm, Talk at 6:30pm</h3> <h3>Our Topic</h3> With this new surge of bootcamp graduates and career changers gone tech, we’ve found ourselves with an interesting conundrum - there is so much talent out there, but these new candidates are "just too green." Employers are often concerned about the costs of on-boarding junior developers. Meanwhile, knowledgable, enthusiastic, and bright junior candidates are chomping at the bit, waiting for their opportunity to be recognized for their unique talents. This talk will explore pieces to the puzzle that will help transform this new influx of juniors from "green" to "lean, mean, coding machines," consequently making them invaluable members of your team. However, this can only be accomplished if both parties are equally invested in the process. <h3>Our speaker, Amy Vaillancourt-Sals</h3> A professional-musician-turned-developer, Amy graduated from <a href="http://www.epicodus.com/">Epicodus</a> (a Portland-based programming bootcamp) and landed a job at <a href="http://thinkshout.com/">ThinkShout</a> where she builds creative web solutions for non-profit organizations. Previous work includes being a community relations specialist for the online music tech companies, Discogs and Bandcamp. When she’s not coding, or actively striving to make the world a better place, she can be found swinging from a high-flying trapeze, or kiteboarding down the Columbia river. <h3>21 October 2015 — Doors at 6pm, Talk at 6:15pm</h3> <h3>Our Topic</h3> With this new surge of bootcamp graduates and career changers gone tech, we’ve found ourselves with an interesting conundrum - there is so much talent out there, but these new candidates are "just too green."
