Liftoff! Power up your teams.

| description |

"[T]he most powerful thing a leader can do to foster effective collaboration is to create conditions that help members competently manage themselves. The second most powerful thing is to launch the team well.” J. Richard Hackman, “Six Common Misperceptions about Teamwork,” Harvard Business Review, June 07, 2011.
Resource staffing isn’t enough. New product development and operations teams need effective Liftoffs to accelerate their start and put them on the trajectory toward success. It's an unexplored, often ignored, yet critical, Agile practice. Through Liftoff, business sponsors, product managers, and product owners, inform, inspire, and initiate their teams. Team members align their work and make a great beginning.
In this talk, Diana Larsen describes ways you can accomplish Liftoff, including Agile Chartering, with real-life stories about effective teams, teamwork, and delivery.
BIO
Diana Larsen is author of Liftoff 2nd ed.: Start and Sustain Successful Agile Teams; Agile Retrospectives: Making Good Teams Great; Five Rules for Accelerated Learning; and co-originator of the Agile Fluency(TM) Model. A founding partner of FutureWorks Consulting, she leads the practice area for Agile software development, team leadership, and Agile transitions. Diana delivers inspiring conference keynote talks and has contributed as a leader with Agile Alliance, Organization Design Forum, and the Agile Open Initiative. |

So, What’s the GROWS Method? A Videoconference Experience
Roll back
| description |

To test our ability to bring in Agilists from around the world, this month AgilePDX is sponsoring a live videoconference with Agile Manifesto signer Andy Hunt, who will be talking with us about the GROWS method, which he developed with Jared Richardson.
Everyone claims they are "agile"; but are you and your team actually effective?
Learn the three important steps to creating a truly effective agile team: 1) Lower your risk on software implementation, scalability, usability and more using Tracer Bullet Development; 2) Make accurate decisions and corrections with rapid, real-time feedback using the Continuous Paradigm; and 3) Converge on success with quick, inexpensive GROWS Method Experiments.
You and your teams won't need to guess; you'll know.
Pizza and pop are sponsored by the Pacific Northwest Quality Conference.
BIO
Andy started in the do-it-yourself days of CP/M and the S100 bus, of Heathkits and Radio Electronics. Andy wrote his first real program, a combination text editor and database manager, for an Ohio Scientific Challenger 4P. It was a great era for tinkering. Andy started hacking in 6502 assembler, modifying operating systems, and wrote his first commercial program (a Manufacturing Resources Planning system) in 1981. He taught himself Unix and C, and began to design and architect larger, more connected systems.
Andy joined up with Dave Thomas and they wrote the seminal software development book, The Pragmatic Programmer, followed a year later by the original Programming Ruby: The Pragmatic Programmer’s Guide, which introduced the Western world to this new language from Japan. Together they founded The Pragmatic Programmers and are well known as founders of the agile movement and authors of the Agile Manifesto, as well as proponents of Ruby and more flexible programming paradigms. They founded the Pragmatic Bookshelf publishing business in 2003, helping keep developers at the top of their game.
Andy is a founder of the Pragmatic Programmers, founder of the Agile Alliance and one of the 17 authors of the Agile Manifesto, and author of nine books. He is an active musician and woodworker, and continues looking for new areas where he can stir things up.

Come get help configuring your computer for ruby. Bring your laptop, and your configuration questions. End the night with your very first "hello world" Program and a few math tricks to test your new configuration.
Learn ruby pdx is a set of free curated lessons in ruby, rspec, (and now introducing rails). They are two hour classes, the first hour going over basic ruby and computer science concepts leading to intermediate concepts in the second hour. We continually develop our curriculum based upon software trends in order to teach not just how to program in a way that leads to a ruby career, but to a "learn more than one language" mindset, with a program that emphasizes current practices in the ruby industry.

PDXRust October: PSU Capstone Project Summaries
Roll back
| description |

This month we'll have teams of PSU students telling us how they used Rust in their senior capstone projects.
One is a flight controller, and the other is a formal verification system. If you'd like to know more about robots, proving software correctness, or just real-world applications of Rust, this is the meetup for you!
Other information:
PDXRust meets on the first Wednesday of [almost] every month, from 6-8pm, at Mozilla's Portland space. The first hour is either lightning talks from group members or a more in-depth tutorial from a Rust expert, and the second hour is hacking and social time.
Join us in #pdxrust on irc.freenode.net (http://webchat.freenode.net/) with any feedback about what you'd like to see!
Remember that Rust's Code of Conduct defines the Rust community's expectations for participation.

Emacs Hack Night
Roll back

Tonight, our Emacs Hangout will feature two lightning talks (one oriented to less experienced Emacsians):
• 15 minute intro to customizing Emacs with Emacs Lisp, by Matthew Hoselton
• 10 minute intro to using Emacs to give Presentations, by Howard Abrams
These will be followed by a Hack Night, where we can all get together and hack on new or existing projects, or work on some of the ideas we learned about tonight. If you have a little or big project or problem you'd like to solve, bring it, and pair up with someone who may have some experience in that area.
Hope to see you all there! |

EPISODE #9!
Get up early and work on your side projects with some like-minded geeks!
TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference.
So bring your laptops and your work ethic to the 3rd weekly PDX TechCoffee. One commit a week is all we ask.
NOTE: We've had some wifi problems in the past, so i recommend having what you need to work locally on your laptop before you come by. |

CSS: Deep and Cheap Learning
Roll back

The CSS group will meet informally at Harder House 104 at 4pm on 10/7/16, and begin discussion of this month's article at 4:30. We start wrapping up the discussion at 5:30 and continue more informally until 6pm.
The reading for the October discussion is here: <a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1608.08225">https://arxiv.org/abs/1608.08225</a> . We recommend reading (or at least trying to read) the article beforehand so that you'll be prepared to participate meaningfully in the discussion. This is true even if the article seems to be "over your head." Trying to understand a challenging topic can be very worthwhile.
But even if you are not able to do the reading, you are still welcome to come to the discussion, meet new friends, and just listen if that's your preference. |

PDX Women In Tech (PDXWIT) presents - "Most Likely to Succeed" Viewing
Roll back

"Most Likely to Succeed" is a documentary about the school systems that are preparing our kids with skills relevant to the modern work place. This documentary has an emphasis on STEM education, hands-on experience, a "makers" mentality to solving problems and using creativity in all aspects of life.
Director Greg Whiteley (Mitt, 2014 Sundance Film Festival) locates the source of the problem not in the economy but in our educational system, which was developed at the dawn of the Industrial Age to train obedient workers. With a world of information available a click away, and the modern workplace valuing skills like collaboration and critical thinking, our rote-based system of learning has become outdated and ineffective. Watch as the documentary unfolds and shows viable solutions.
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering: educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women. |

Roll back
| description |
RSVP here - https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdxwit-presents-demystifying-telecomhow-the-voice-you-hear-got-there-tickets-28243621432
Have you ever wondered how phone calls work on a lower level? James Aimonetti has created a workshop to show PDXWIT members the tech behind telecom.
Agenda for the workshop:
- A brief history of telecom
- Describe VoIP at high level
- Show some SIP packets for basic call scenarios
- Introduce basic jargon and acronym
- Compare SIP to HTTP
- Describe high level distributed architecture of Kazoo
- Identify and eliminate single points of failure
- Coordinate call processing among servers
- Highlight challenges in distributing everything
- Brief pitch for developing against Kazoo
- REST APIs
- Pivot - real-time, dynamic call routing
This workshop encourages more women to consider telecom as an exciting place where innovation is possible and learn to marry telecom infrastructure to the Internet-driven life in new and novel ways. Come learn a little about telecom, distributed systems as applied to telecom infrastructure, Erlang, and maybe get inspired to build new systems that leverage the APIs exposed in Kazoo.
We are a community-based non-profit organization. |

DevelopmentNow Little Hackathon of Horrors
Roll back
| description |

At DevelopmentNow, we like learning how to use and program new technology, and the ability to write skills for Amazon's Alexa assistant is pretty exciting. We're hosting a free workshop and hackathon at our offices, during which we'll learn together to write a new Alexa skill, and demonstrate it, in an hour!
Because this will be late October, and because we also like the spooky atmosphere of that time of year, we're going to focus on thinking of skills with a Halloween bent. Given time and interest, we may even be able to put together a decision-tree narration of a haunted house. We're also eager to hear your own ideas and see what all the participants come up with together.
**What's the planned schedule?**
Our office doors will open at 10 am, and we'll officially kick off the session at 11. We'll share quickstart documents to everyone in attendance, and have a couple of our in-house developers with Alexa experience roaming the place to help figure things out. At 4 pm, we'll wrap up and take turns showing off what we've built.
**What are my transport/parking options?**
Parking around the east side of the Burnside Bridge is limited, but generally viable on weekends. We're also very close to the MLK and Burnside stop for the A Loop of the Portland Streetcar, or a block from the nearest bus stop on the 19 or 20. We have indoor bike parking as well.
**What should I bring to the event?**
Please bring a laptop and a willingness to learn! You don't need previous experience. We'll provide power, wifi, workspace, food, cooperative instruction, and our Echo for testing.
**Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?**
[email protected]
**You said there will be food?**
Yes! We'll provide coffee and pastries when the office doors open at 10, and order Sizzle Pie around 2 pm for our hard-working participants. |

PDX Women In Tech (PDXWIT) presents Demystifying Telecom:How the voice you hear got there
Roll back
| description |
