Working with Complex Systems (with an Introduction to the Cynefin Framework)
Have you ever been part of a project that no matter how well planned it is, it seems much harder than it should be and you don't see the results you originally hoped for? It's possible that the approach taken may have been incorrect for the situation and a new paradigm of decision making may be necessary. This talk will give you a useful framework to understand different contexts that we work in and more appropriate decision making techniques for the different situations we find in our business. The session will also cover how this understanding can be applied in project management and leadership. Be prepared for an eye opening discussion that may very will change how you approach your work from now on!
Rhea Stadick applies leading edge techniques to accelerate business results across complex, global organizations. She's driven by the need to do the right things right and ensure healthy workplaces that support diversity of thought and encourage continuous improvement and learning. Over the last 10 years she's led grassroots efforts and initiatives to establish improved ways of working that focus on fast value delivery and sustainable development. As one of the early adopters of Agile at Intel Corporation, Rhea helped to foster other change agents in this space and cleared a path to enable Agile to be an accepted and embraced way of working across 100,000+ people and over 60 countries. As a systems engineer, she has developed an expertise in Complex Adaptive Systems and applying practical methods to work in dynamic contexts. Rhea is a TEDx speaker and keynoter on topics including new approaches for modern business and thriving in changing environments.
Note: 1 PMI PDU can be claimed for attending this event.

##Getting Started with Kafka and Design Patterns for working with Fast Data
Apache Kafka is an open-source message broker project that provides a high-throughput and low-latency platform for storing and processing real-time data feeds. In this presentation Ian Downard will describe the concepts that are important to understand in order to effectively use the Kafka API. You will see how to prepare a development environment from scratch, how to write a basic publish/subscribe application, and how to run it on a single-node cluster in Virtual Box and on multi-node clusters in the cloud. Ian will also discuss strategies for working with "fast data" and how to maximize the throughput of your Kafka pipeline. He'll describe which Kafka configurations and data types have the largest impact on performance and provide some useful JUnit tests, combined with statistical analysis in R, that can help quantify how various configurations effect throughput.
##Speaker:
Ian Downard is a technical evangelist for MapR where he is focused on creating developer-friendly ways to use the MapR Converged Data Platform.

PDX Women In Tech (PDXWIT) presents - "Most Likely to Succeed" Viewing
Roll back
| description |
RSVP here - https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-presents-most-likely-to-succeed-viewing-tickets-28317818357
PDX Women In Tech, Jama Software and Code Fellows are partnering to screen Most Likely to Succeed, a documentary about the school systems that are preparing our kids with skills relevant to the modern work place. This documentary has an emphasis on STEM education, hands-on experience, a "makers" mentality to solving problems and using creativity in all aspects of life.
Director Greg Whiteley (Mitt, 2014 Sundance Film Festival) locates the source of the problem not in the economy but in our educational system, which was developed at the dawn of the Industrial Age to train obedient workers. With a world of information available a click away, and the modern workplace valuing skills like collaboration and critical thinking, our rote-based system of learning has become outdated and ineffective. Watch as the documentary unfolds and shows viable solutions.
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering: educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women. |

Join us for this public event where Luka Mustafa, founder of open hardware Institute IRNAS will present open source open hardware networking and manufacturing solutions he has been developing together with his team for the past few years.
KORUZA:
Koruza is first open source wireless optical communication system for urban environments, connecting locations at up to 150 m distance, which empowers networks with 1 Gbps and 10 Gbps throughputs unaffected by radio spectrum saturation to provide last-mile networking without the need for fiber installation. Now, the version for professional use, which is bringing fibre-like speeds to ISP subscribers ten times cheaper, is available for preorder.
A kit version of the system - Koruza 1.0 is also available. This version of the system is modular and 3D printed, with assembly instructions and technical documentation published online so that researchers and everyone else interested can replicate it without a problem, understand its operation and be able to modify it for their own purpose.
GoodEnoughCNC:
In the process of the development of Koruza we realized we need an open source baseline manufacturing solution for prototyping and small series production. That's how we created affordable and versatile CNC solutions to enable simple production anywhere around the globe and to change how we manufacture things. GoodEnoughCNC philosophy is to offer effective digital manufacturing tools that are good enough for most of the applications an average maker needs. We’ll give you an insight into how GoodEnoughCNC machines were designed and developed, explaining the benefits of being effectively open source, using standard components and publishing documentation with instructions online as well as walk you
through some of the use cases to show how these machines can be used advantageously to improve lives of individuals and communities around the world, from Nepal to Principe island.
BIO Luka:
Luka Mustafa is a Shuttleworth Foundation Fellow, working full-time on wireless optical system KORUZA development at Institute IRNAS Rače in Slovenia that he founded in 2014, as well as being a PhD student at University College London. He leads a multidisciplinary team developing open systems ranging from CNC machines to electronics and fibre optic systems, promotes and deploys open wireless networks in wlan slovenia project and manages national and international wireless backbones.
About IRNAS:

Collective Agency membership is for people who want to work alongside other people, and to be working in a place where you can have conversations, eat lunch together, and over time form friendships. Members value productive work.
“I joined because I needed a place to really buckle down and get work done. I’ve stayed because it feels good to be there, I enjoy seeing the other co-workers and meeting new people, and because I still get more work done there than anywhere else.”
–Allie Quady, Momentum Health Coaching
“I’ve been working at Collective Agency since I moved to Portland June, 2013. I love my commute, I love coming in and seeing busy happy people, I’m on phone calls often and have the space available for privacy. I’m broadened by the community here.”

Join Jason Skipton from Growing Gardens, Julia Niiro from Let Um Eat, and Charley Wang from Josephine for a night of civic discourse, community discussion and, of course, food. |
