Join us for the Feb meeting of PdxDevOps.
Agenda:
Speakers:
Name: Emily Dunham (https://twitter.com/QEDunham)
Topic: Automating all the things
Jesse Dearing (https://twitter.com/JesseDearing)
Topic: Failure and RCAs: A Love Story
I love failure! I don't love to bathe in the tears of engineers but I love understanding how the systems that run our world fail. Everything from a failed hardware component to a human mistake. I love reading RCAs like murder mysteries. I will cover failure, how to learn from it, and preventing it. I will cover tools, processes, and techniques for reviewing and learning from failure without making people cry.
Jesse Dearing is a Lead Site Reliability Engineer at InVisionApp where he wrangles databases and builds tools to manage them. Jesse likes to learn how languages connect to other systems. Jesse likes making everything a Bash one-liner and is his own chaos monkey as a result. When he's not picking apart systems and automating them, he enjoys riding bikes, reading, and spending time with family.
pdxdevops is a Portland, Oregon user group that explores the glorious intersection of software development and systems operations, and shares practical advice on working effectively in an era of agile infrastructure, server automation and cloud computing. The group welcomes participants interested in any related products, technologies and methodologies. The group has been meeting regularly since August 2010 for presentations, demos and discussions applicable to all skill levels, from newbies and experts. Every month 15-35 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for devops – join us! |

Tech + Inclusion: A Community Conversation
Roll back
| description |

Portland’s technology community has much to celebrate; however, when it comes to having an inclusive and diverse industry we must improve. Diversifying our workforce to include all from our community is the right thing to do, and the data shows it benefits us in terms of innovation, team functioning, and bottom line results. We know that greater diversity leads to greater innovation. Tech + Inclusion Community Conversation is an opportunity for companies who have joined the PDC Diversity Pledge and the community to come together.
This event is open to those working in the tech sector, to students and prospective tech sector workers, and those interested in the tech industry. The Tech + Inclusion event will help create partnerships that can ultimately lead to hiring and career advancement of women and people of color in Portland’s Tech industry.

This will be followed by **Office Hours**, where we can all get together and discuss, fix or hack on new or existing projects. If you have a little or big project or problem you'd like to solve, bring it, and pair up with someone who may have some experience in that area.
Hope to see you all there!

Woman Led Unconference (woman led startups)
Roll back
| description |

The Woman Led Unconference will sell out again, don't be left out because it's sold out.
Also, early bird tickets are just $25, but go to $40 effective March 1st.
WOMAN LED, INC. A 501 (c) (3) Organization is hosting Portland’s second women’s Unconference revolving around the theme of Women Entrepreneurship.
- Saturday March 11th, 9:00am-4:00pm
- Attendance is limited to the first 50 people, sorry
- Early bird ticket pricing is $25
- Ticket prices $40 effective Wednesday March 1st
What is Woman Led?
Our mission is to empower a community of women led companies to build profitable and sustainable businesses that will positively impact the economy. Our vision is to be a national organization that provides professional services to women who Dare, Dream and Do. We will become the most trusted community that supports women business owners in the United States. We will create a business world where women entrepreneurs have equitable opportunity, support and success.
For more info, find us at: http://womanled.org/
Why an Unconference?
Women in Portland are boldly pursuing their entrepreneurial dream. Yet they stall before they achieve scale. One in eight (12.5%) female owned businesses have successfully scaled. This is 2 times lower than male owned businesses. We have uncovered three key barriers to women achieving their entrepreneurial aspirations – Identifying Resources, Lack of Mentorship, and Less Funding / Sexist Culture. The women’s unconference will provide resources and networking to help overcome these barriers. The Facilitator Megan O'Leary the Director of Member Services from OEN is going to facilitate the whole unconference event. A great experienced facilitator makes the event, so prepare yourself for a wonderful time.
What will our Unconference look like:
9:00am-9.30am Coffee & networking
9.30-10am Keynote speaker
10:00-11:00am Overview and group agenda setting
11:00-11:45am Session 1
11:45am-12:30pm Session 2
12:30pm-1:30pm Lunch
1:30pm-2:15pm Session 4
2:15pm-3:30pm Session 5
3:30pm-4:00pm Closing & Keynote
Lunch is included. So, what exactly is an ‘Unconference?’ Think of this as an open conference that is driven by its participants. Unlike traditional conferences, an unconference allows for flexibility, open discussion, and debate, all fueled by its attendees. Innovative conversations with some of the brightest people, important purposes and tasks discussed without any formal agenda, and unplanned dialogue led by ultimately what peaks your interest most.
Come to build a collaborative network, establish partnerships, and be in a close community of people that value the same or similar topics of discussion. The sessions will be broken up into 30-minute discussions and spaces are reserved for gatherings that happen throughout the day.
Who should attend? Whether you’re a CEO, a startup founder, stay-at-home mom with a new idea, allies, or simply just have interest in the topic of women entrepreneurs, we welcome you to join us. This event is open to all genders to attend and participate.
All NedSpace events have a Code of Conduct which all participants, members, partners, visitors, vendors, guests must abide by.
Special keynote guests Sara Batterby CEO & President of Hifi Farms & Jill Nelson, Founder & CEO, Ruby Receptionists
Seriously, get your ticket today before it sells out

AgilePDX Pub Lunch: How Do We Measure Value?
Roll back
| description |
There’s a lot of talk about throughput and just “getting stuff done” in Agile and Lean environments. We relative size things with story points. We wrapped around the axle about velocity. But, isn’t the point to deliver value for the best quality hand price while fostering humane workplaces?
If Agile is about delivering value, then why do we spend the greatest amount of our time on metrics for the delivery side of the house? How can we measure value? How would this help inform prioritization?
Last month’s pub lunchers started digging into this from several perspectives, and they want to dig more. Grab a shovel and come along. Better, yet, grab your PO or PM and come along. We’ll get this figured out over lunch. You'll find us in the back. RSVP's welcome, but not required, at [email protected]. |

Philippe De Ryck, PhD<br>
Web Security Expert @ imec-DistriNet, KU Leuven
Talk
===
Angular 2 is hot, and there is a huge amount of information available on building applications, improving performance, and various other topics. But do you know how to make your Angular 2 applications secure? What kind of security features does Angular 2 offer you, and which additional steps can you take to really boost the security of your applications?
In this session, we cover one of the biggest threats in modern web applications: untrusted JavaScript code. You will learn how Angular protects you against XSS, and why you shouldn't bypass this protection. We will also dive into new security mechanisms, such as Content Security Policy. Through a few examples, I will show you how you can use these mechanisms to enhance the security in your client-side context.

Erlang-Elixir - Moving Complexity Around
Roll back
| description |
Jessie Cook will lead our exploration tonight.
Jessie: A beginner Alchemist who's really enjoying the functional nature of Elixir and the design of the language.
Description: Moving complexity around - What's the best way to provide a unified API in front of some of the worst APIs out there? The tools I reached for are Phoenix, Absinthe for GraphQL and a series of adapters. These adapters utilize both polymorphism and metaprogramming, but was this the right way to do it in Elixir? Let's discuss the overall architecture and the nitty gritty details.

Neurogeeks is a (now monthly!) meetup for people interested in neuroscience, cognitive psychology, technology and the mind. Our meetups address a range of related topics at a "TEDTalk" or Nova level of complexity. Our goal is to build a community of people interested in the brain in Portland.
This month, we'll be discussing various ways scientists and "life-hackers" are trying to enhance brain function and essentially make people "smarter." Lots of interesting avenues of discussion!
For more information, [join the meetup](https://www.meetup.com/NeuroGeeks-Neuroscience-Meetup-Group/events/237690287/) and RSVP. |

Agile PDX: A Taste of Training from the Back of the Room!
Roll back
| description |
Effectively conveying information and knowledge to others is a critical skill. But how do we, as humans, learn best? When do people start to lose focus on our message? How can you as a coach, facilitator, trainer, teacher (one who wants to help others learn), or presenter use the latest in brain-based learning to help those you are teaching to learn? This brief overview of the content in Sharon Bowman's <i>Training from the Back of the Room!</i> is an invitation to see who is doing the most talking, moving, and writing in all of your communications. You will also get a glimpse of the 6 learning principles and 6 memory vehicles that you might use in your next presentation, training, or coaching session. This interactive session is an invitation to look at how we traditionally teach and how we naturally learn. It expresses the evolution of training from the traditional hierarchical norm to an emergent partnership norm.
Christine Brautigam presents this opportunity to learn how you can be most effective when transferring knowledge to others!
<strong>Bio:</strong>
