Portland Ruby Brigade monthly meeting
Roll back
| description |
We'll have pizza & beer starting at 6pm, so stop by early if you want to have dinner and socialize before the presentations.
##PRESENTATIONS at 7pm
JWTs have Trust Issues
by Lance Ivy
If application security is built on healthy distrust, then JSON Web Tokens are pretty healthy little tokens. Come learn about JWTs: why do they exist, what issues do they solve, and how do they compare to Rails sessions? We'll build a threat model for user sessions, develop an appreciation for open standards, and discover how JWTs can be useful in any Rails application.
After presentations we'll have more socializing time.
##**Thanks to New Relic for providing the venue and beer, pizza & snacks this month!**
ARRIVING BY BIKE? Cyclists are welcome to park their bikes in the New Relic office. Bikes are not allowed in the building lobby, however, and must use the freight elevator. To get your bike up to the 29th floor, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." You can get up by buzzing in with the intercom, and saying you're here for New Relic. Ride on up to the 29th floor, you'll easily find the bike parking.
ABOUT THE GROUP: *The Portland Ruby Brigade, also known as pdxruby and pdx.rb, is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland, Oregon area. The group welcomes all programmers interested in the language and its implementations, tools, libraries and frameworks, such as Ruby on Rails. The group has been meeting since August 2002 for presentations, demos and discussions. Every month 35-75 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for Ruby. If you'd like to present or have a topic you'd like discussed, please post to the mailing list. The group usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month, "Ruby Tuesday" -- see you there!*

Roll back

Let's kick off the new year and dig down in some great discussion around Agile topics! Last month we voted to discuss "Why a scrum master is not a secretary! (what a scrum master does and does not do)"
Have you ever known a Scrum Master who is the secretary to a team? Maybe even yourself? While this can save other team members time initially and may create a sort of glue or thread for the team, is it positive energy for the team or can it be detrimental? Does it affect our goals to guiding self-organized teams? Bring your stories and experiences, positive or negative. Help other teams, and your own, identify possible problems with Scrum Master implementations and solutions for them. |

Advanced Data Visualization - DAMA PDX
Roll back
| description |

→ |
The world produces more than 2.5 exabytes of data every day. There is just too much information out there and traditional reports using tabs, rows and columns do not paint the whole picture any longer.
Visualization is one key approach to gaining insight from this mountain of data. Advanced Visualizations Platforms have enabled the use of more dynamic and interactive business graphics, such as real-time dashboards and charts that update automatically as the data changes. It enables knowledge workers to see the trends and patterns (along with gaps and outliers) in the data that are not as easily identified in rows and columns of numbers. Even Data Scientists are leveraging advanced visualizations tools to explore, understand and communicate insights, along with the actions that need to be taken.
In this session, we will explore how advanced visualization tools are being utilized in the era of big data to draw valuable business insights and we will also delve into some of the predominant data visualization tools being used by Data Scientists.

When: Thursday, January 5th, 2017 at 7pm<br>
Why: The pursuit of technology freedom<br>
Stream: http://pdxlinux.org/live<br>
While community management and developer relations are gaining acceptance, many companies still don't know how these efforts can benefit not only the communities of the open source projects on which their business relies but also their productivity and profitability.
In this talk, I'll look at community from a business perspective, including the effect community can have on an organization's bottom line. Although there are communities everywhere, I'll approach the topic—meaning, communities, their members, and their contributors—from a free/open source perspective.
In this talk I will also cover:
* Business reasons for supporting a community
* Metrics for gauging community management success from the business' perspective
* Getting started in community management
* Risks of community management

Magic Night - Javascript Code Challenge
Roll back
| description |

→ |
Magic Night is a hands on, team oriented, Javascript coding lab, welcoming of all experience levels and backgrounds. We get together because coding is fun; fun to solve hard problems, and fun to work together. We organize into small teams to code up creative solutions to a common challenge, then after 3 hours of building, present to the group.
Today's magic night challenge is to build an animal quiz program.
It works like this. The program starts by telling the user to think of an animal. It then begins asking a series of yes/no questions about that animal: does it swim, does it have hair, etc. Eventually, it will narrow down the possibilities to a single animal and guess that (Is it a mouse?).

Agile Leadership Workshop
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Agile development methods and practices are radically different from ‘waterfall’ or sequential, phased approaches. Agile development has become mainstream in software development over the last decade and has recently spread beyond software to other domains. It is important for leaders and manager to understand how to build, develop, and lead Agile teams -- not just for your company, but also for your own career.
This workshop introduces leaders and managers to a cohesive set of methods, practices, and principles to maximize business results from Agile and Lean development, while also cultivating a workplace where people thrive. The workshop defines and clarifies the roles of leaders, first-line managers, middle managers, and executives using materials drawn from over a decade of Agile and Lean adoption experience covering tens of thousands of people within Fortune 100 companies. It also addresses what does and doesn't work well in Agile and Lean adoptions across a diverse set of global cultures.
The workshop topics are highly dynamic and customizable. ~80% will be based on participant interests. These are a few of the topics participants can choose from:
-Agile mindset
-Shared leadership
-Great teams
-Work environment
-Resources
-Experiments
-Vision
-Common goals
-Shared learning
-Welcome change
-Iteration
-Mastery
-Diversity
-Reflection
-Sensemaking
-Visualization
-Deliver Value
This class is designed for leaders and managers of Agile and Lean teams. This includes executive and organizational level management at all levels. Leaders and managers in non-Agile and Lean environments will also find the workshop refreshing and helpful as the concepts are broadly applicable.
After completing this course, participants should:
1) understand the Agile and Lean mindset, and the business case for Agile and Lean product development
2) understand the main tenets of mainstream Agile and Lean methods
3) understand the role of the manager on Agile and Lean teams, and leadership styles that work
4) know how to establish and shape an environment for successful Agile and Lean adoption
5) understand the role of the customer and other non-development roles in your company
6) know how local and corporate culture affects Agile and Lean adoption
7) recognize common pitfalls and know how to avoid them

Solutions Thinking for Product Managers
Roll back
| description |
Product managers and product teams face unprecedented challenges as business environments and product ecosystems become increasingly complex and unpredictable.
Customers have tremendous freedom to choose among competing products, and user experience has become a big factor in many purchase decisions. Time-to-market pressure is unrelenting, while product complexity and technical challenges keep increasing. In this environment, businesses must offer solutions that solve the right problem for the right consumer at the right time and the right price.
Solutions Thinking offers a fresh look at how to develop holistic solutions for customer problems. Solutions Thinking helps teams balance business, usage, and technology to create a compelling and sustainable set of products and services to meet the customer’s current and future needs. Solutions Thinking helps teams go from opportunities to solutions using a value-driven approach, and works with traditional, Agile, and hybrid development life cycles.
Many teams just focus on making products when they should be thinking about developing solutions. Solutions Thinking blends a unique collection of proven industry models into a coherent methodology for solution development. The approach is specifically designed to work in complex environments.
*This is a free, one-hour introduction to Solutions Thinking, which is typically a day-long workshop. We will not have time to cover topics in depth. After an overview of the topics, there will be time for a deeper dive into one additional module based on participant preferences. If you would like to participate in the day-long workshop on February 21st, please make a reservation here. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/solutions-thinking-for-product-managers-tickets-30741063348
Who typically attends?
Product managers, Product owners, product planners, product marketing, architects, designers, product engineers, and others working on holistic solution discovery, definition, design, and delivery. |

| description |
If you would like to participate in the day-long workshop on February 21st, please make a reservation here. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/agile-leadership-workshop-tickets-30746106432
Who typically attends?
Product managers, Product owners, product planners, product marketing, architects, designers, product engineers, and others working on holistic solution discovery, definition, design, and delivery. |

Hi,
The Lawgen Project is basically an effort to create a 'Wikipedia for solutions to all problems', that also has new communication tools and lets groups of all sizes make decisions, trade, and collaborate. At the moment we're looking for both programmers,
(see: http://www.volunteermatch.org/search/opp2560426.jsp#.WGYM8QZnX )
-And for Open Source, Direct Action, and Direct Democracy advocates to interview on the 6th. We have a camera crew and an advocate for Open Source that we'll be interviewing around 3, so we figured 4 would be a great time for others to show up.
For anyone curious we have visual and written walkthroughs posted at Lawgen.org
All questions and feedback are welcome, our email is [email protected] |

RSVP - https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-happy-hour-networking-event-tickets-30737630079
Join us for happy hour at Digital Trends to celebrate PDXWIT's 5 Year Anniversary!
For our first event in 2017 and in honor of our anniversary, the theme of the event is reflecting on how your life has changed over the last five years. We will hear more about this from our lightning speakers and use this concept as our networking conversational prompt.
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase women in our community who are doing great things.
Introduction to Digital Trends, including what they do and what jobs they are hiring for.
Meet entrepreneur Paige Hendrix Buckner, who went from teaching and directing public policy to founding a company that ensures businesses can easily gift locally-sourced items to their clients, at her company ClientJoy.
A talk by Maarika Krumhansl, a mother of a young daughter and a Release Manager at Jama Software, about how she is a mama in tech.
Remember, throughout the event we will have an activity table for people who want to create during the event. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing.
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Trans and non-binary people are always welcome at our events. |
