Our first meeting of 2017 is scheduled for Wednesday January 18th at Ecotrust. Special guests this month are Robert Eriksen and Aaron Evans of Paidtogo, a startup with a goal to incentivize alternative commuting. Here's more about their app:
Paidtogo is an app and web based platform that empowers governments, businesses and other organizations to incentivize commuters to take alternative forms of transportation. With this platform we can track, verify and pay commuters by the mile to walk, bike, take public transportation and carpool.
As always, there will be pizza. Bring your own geo-topics are welcome, as are bring your own geo-beverages.

Roll back

Join Nike Digital for the next event in our Nike Tech Talks series on Thursday, January 12th from 4:30-7:00pm!
Apply Graph Theory to Infrastructure as Code | Mitchell Hashimoto, Founder, HashiCorp
Graphs are mathematical structures used to model relationships between objects. Modern infrastructure is a series of resources (objects) that have dependencies and ordering requirements (relationships). Thus, modern infrastructure can be represented as the mathematical construct of a graph. With just a few nodes, the relationships between resources in an infrastructure are easy to understand, but at a certain scale, the relationships become impractical to reason about.
Terraform relies on years of graph theory research to model the relationships between infrastructure resources so operators can safely manage and change infrastructure resources across bare metal, IaaS, PasS, and SaaS. Operators can avoid unforeseen consequences using Terraform
RSVP at: https://niketechtalks-jan2017.splashthat.com.
We hope to see you at the event and encourage you to invite your colleagues. If you have any questions, please contact [email protected] |

Portland Tech Solidarity Meeting
Roll back
| description |

The goal of this meetup is to get interested people from the tech world together with Portland community organizations to discuss practical steps we can take in the face of a Trump administration, while there is still ample time to prepare and plan.
We'll operate on the assumption that Trump means what he says, and that he will work to implement the policies he campaigned on, including mass deportations, "extreme vetting" of immigrants and visitors, and a registry of Muslim Americans.
Together I hope we can find ways to minimize the impact of these policies in and around Portland, help people defend their rights (and fight back), and lobby the companies we work to stop collecting and storing sensitive data wherever possible.

pdxrlang meetup: Text mining & association rule mining in R to enhance public health surveillance
Roll back
| description |

→ |
Speaker: Matt Laidler
Abstract: R can be a powerful tool for the process of systematically tracking health-related outcomes (i.e. surveillance) identified from administrative data sources. Tracking health outcomes in populations often relies on coded administrative data to standardize metrics and simplify processes. This may have the effect of overlooking useful information described in free text data, but due to data volume/size, may not be practical to process outside of text mining methods. This presentation will describe a use case of text mining and association rule mining in R for tracking health outcomes. |

pdxrlang meetup: R and Machine Learning
Roll back
| description |

Women Who Code Portland and Portland R User Group are coming together to host a night full of talks on R and Machine Learning and an opportunity to network with like-minded individuals.
Program
6.00 - 6:30: Doors Open
6.30 - 7:30: Talks
7:30 - 8:00: Networking and wrap up.
Talk #1 - Predictive Analytics and Machine Learning in R - Myffy Hopkins
All data has a story to tell. You can force a story upon it, or you can breath life into it to let it speak for itself. Myfanwy "Myffy" Hopkins has been using advanced statistical methods, R, and machine learning for over 10 years to transform data into information for decision making. The tools provided by R packages are unparalleled at quickly transforming data into a working predictive model. Myffy brings the statistical and data mining expertise needed to make R a highly productive space for generating predictive models using machine learning methods. In her talk, Myffy will show how R makes the difficult statistical concepts of Predictive Analytics manageable to execute. Seeing the actual results of a predictive model will help get through the more grueling parts of the learning curve to becoming a Data Scientist.
Talk #2 - Automated Feature Selection of Predictors in Electronic Medical Records Data - Jessica Minnier
Jessica Minnier is an assistant professor of biostatistics at Oregon Health & Sciences University in the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health. Her research interests include statistical methods for risk prediction and classification, the analysis of 'omics data, and the analysis of large data sets such as electronic health records data. She is interested in reproducible research as well as statistical computing and data visualization with R and shiny.
In her talk, Jessica will talk about "emrselect" - https://github.com/jminnier/emrselect. "emrselect" is an R package that automates the feature selection method for phenotype prediction with Electronic Medical Record (EMR) data to reduce the number of candidate predictors and in turn improve model performance by relying entirely on unlabeled observations. The proposed method generates a comprehensive surrogate for the underlying phenotype with an unsupervised clustering of disease status based on several highly predictive features such as diagnosis codes and mentions of the disease in text fields available in the entire set of EMR data. A sparse regression model is then built with the estimated outcomes and remaining covariates to identify those features most informative of the phenotype of interest. Empirical results suggest that this procedure reduces the number of gold-standard labels necessary for phenotyping, thereby harnessing the automated power of EMR data and improving efficiency.
Who Should Attend?
Anyone who is interested in exploring the world of R and Machine Learning or just curious to learn what they are. By attending our event, you are agreeing to support our mission and follow our [Code of Conduct](https://github.com/WomenWhoCode/guidelines-resources/blob/master/code_of_conduct.md). |

A Certified ScrumMaster® helps project teams properly use Scrum, increasing the likelihood of the project's overall success. CSMs understand Scrum values, practices, and applications and provide a level of knowledge and expertise above and beyond that of typical project managers. CSMs act as "servant leaders," helping the rest of the Scrum team work together and learn the Scrum framework. CSMs also protect the team from both internal and external distractions.
To earn your CSM certificate, you must take a CSM course from a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST) or Endorsed Scrum Trainer (EST) and demonstrate your progress through our online CSM test. The first step toward your CSM is familiarizing yourself with Scrum. Then attend an in-person, two-day (16 hour) CSM course taught by a Scrum Alliance Authorized Trainer. After successfully completing the course, you will need to pass the CSM exam. To get a passing score, you must correctly answer 24 of the 35 questions. You will be eligible for 16 Scrum Education Units (SEUs) upon completion of this course. After you pass the CSM exam, you will be asked to accept the License Agreement and complete your Scrum Alliance membership profile.
This 2 day (16 hours) course fulfills the classroom requirement to become a CSM.

Effectively conveying information and knowledge to others is a critical skill. But how do we, as humans, learn best? When do people start to lose focus on our message? How can you as a coach, facilitator, trainer, teacher (one who wants to help others learn), or presenter use the latest in brain-based learning to help those you are teaching to learn? This brief overview of the content in Sharon Bowman's <i>Training from the Back of the Room!</i> is an invitation to see who is doing the most talking, moving, and writing in all of your communications. You will also get a glimpse of the 6 learning principles and 6 memory vehicles that you might use in your next presentation, training, or coaching session. This interactive session is an invitation to look at how we traditionally teach and how we naturally learn. It expresses the evolution of training from the traditional hierarchical norm to an emergent partnership norm.
Christine Brautigam presents this opportunity to learn how you can be most effective when transferring knowledge to others!

The seventh annual “What is…?” conference-experience will engage communication, media, and nature by examining everyday life — our lifeworks and lifestyles — emphasizing the lifeworlds (environments) we live in. It will investigate how communication/media constitute and permeate all avenues and forms of life — from scale, pace, and pattern to the public, private, and organic. By building bridges through multidisciplinary networks, the event emphasizes how communication is instrumental in and for living systems. What is life and how is life mediated? |

Advanced Data Visualization - DAMA PDX
Roll back
| description |
The world produces more than 2.5 exabytes of data every day. There is just too much information out there and traditional reports using tabs, rows and columns do not paint the whole picture any longer.
Visualization is one key approach to gaining insight from this mountain of data. Advanced Visualizations Platforms have enabled the use of more dynamic and interactive business graphics, such as real-time dashboards and charts that update automatically as the data changes. It enables knowledge workers to see the trends and patterns (along with gaps and outliers) in the data that are not as easily identified in rows and columns of numbers. Even Data Scientists are leveraging advanced visualizations tools to explore, understand and communicate insights, along with the actions that need to be taken.
In this session, we will explore how advanced visualization tools are being utilized in the era of big data to draw valuable business insights and we will also delve into some of the predominant data visualization tools being used by Data Scientists.
