Clojure Collection Processing in Context w/ Bill Burcham
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Part I: Eager to Process
A key innovation in Clojure (versus earlier Lisps) is the abstraction of sequence processing functions away from the list type, to the more general sequence interface. This polymorphic abstraction lets what would otherwise be a large library of functions operating on a single collection type (list), grow in power to operate over more collection types, including maps, sets, vectors, and many others.
The clojure.core sequence processing facilities borrow great ideas from earlier Lisps and Haskell too. Conversely, ClojureScript’s collections library can be viewed as a successor to Clojure’s own. By exploring a little bit of this surrounding terrain, we gain a much clearer understanding of Clojure’s elegant and powerful collection processing.
In this first 45-minute presentation, we’ll introduce a toy problem and we’ll solve it a few different ways at the REPL. From very basic beginnings, we’ll introduce sequence processing and collection-sequence duality. We’ll progress smoothly to higher-order functions and beyond (I don’t want to ruin the surprise mkay?) Along the way we’ll meet a number of foundational Clojure functions and forms.
If you’ve read a Clojure book (mainly the first few chapters) and you’ve written some code, you have everything you need to understand this talk. Intermediate Clojurists, may also come away with some new insights.
Bio:
Bill Burcham has earned his living for almost three decades now, making software. He’s liked Lisp best for even longer than that. As many have pointed out: Lisp feels like something discovered—not something invented. There is something essential in Lisp.
When he’s not engaged in a media fast, Bill can be reached @billburcham |

Agile Data Warehousing, Building a Virtualized ODS” with Kent Graziano - DAMA PDX
Roll back
| description |
Greetings Portland Lovers of Data, join your local Data User Group downtown on Thursday Feb 16th to learn about “Agile Data Warehousing, Building a Virtualized ODS” with Kent Graziano, Senior Technical Evangelist with Snowflake Computing and the author of The Data Warrior blog.
This is our usual monthly Portland Data Management User Group Chapter meeting.
For more information and to register go to: http://www.damapdx.org/ or our new meetup page at: https://www.meetup.com/PDX-Data-Engineering/events/237139605/. Please register at one of those sites, so that we have a count for our usual continental breakfast. Walk-ins are welcome.
<h3>Description </h3>
At a past client, in order to meet timelines to fulfill urgent, unmet reporting needs, we found it necessary to build a virtualized Operational Data Store (ODS). This allowed us to deliver new objects, quickly and incrementally to the report developer so we could quickly show the business users their data. In order to limit the need for refactoring in later stages of the data warehouse development, we chose to build this virtualization layer on top of a Type 2 persistent staging layer. All of this was done using the free Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler (SDDM) against (gasp!) a MS SQL Server Database.
In this talk, we will show you the architecture for this approach, the rationale, and then some of the tricks used in SDDM to build all the stage tables and views very quickly. In the end you will see actual SQL code for the virtual ODS that you can leverage for your own projects.
<u>Goals</u>
• Learn what a Virtual ODS is and how it can help you be Agile
• Learn a data warehouse architecture that can be implemented incrementally and in layers
• How to quickly build pattern based stage tables in SDDM
• How to build complex, pattern based views in SDDM
• Tips on how to use analytic functions to create virtual columns
• See examples of how to embed change data capture into a view-based ELT loading architecture
<h3>Speaker</h3>
Kent Graziano is a Senior Technical Evangelist with Snowflake Computing and the author of The Data Warrior blog (https://kentgraziano.com/). He is a certified Data Vault Master (CDVP2), Oracle ACE Director, former member of the Boulder BI Brain Trust (#BBBT), expert data modeler and architect with over 30 years of experience, including 25 years doing data warehousing with multiple architectures.
Kent is an award winning speaker and author having written numerous articles, and has given hundreds of presentations, nationally and internationally. He is a co-author of four books including The Data Model Resource Book (1st Edition), and Supercharge Your Data Warehouse. His now has several ebooks on Kindle including A Check List for Doing a Data Model Design Reviews and An Introduction to Agile Data Engineering. You can follow Kent on his blog and twitter @kentgraziano.

Agile Data Warehousing, Building a Virtualized ODS” with Kent Graziano - DAMA PDX
Roll back
| description |
Greetings Portland Lovers of Data, join me downtown on Thursday February 16th to learn about “Agile Data Warehousing, Building a Virtualized ODS” with Kent Graziano, Senior Technical Evangelist with Snowflake Computing and the author of The Data Warrior blog.

Agile development methods and practices are radically different from ‘waterfall’ or sequential, phased approaches. Agile development has become mainstream in software development over the last decade and has recently spread beyond software to other domains. It is important for leaders and manager to understand how to build, develop, and lead Agile teams -- not just for your company, but also for your own career.
This workshop introduces leaders and managers to a cohesive set of methods, practices, and principles to maximize business results from Agile and Lean development, while also cultivating a workplace where people thrive. The workshop defines and clarifies the roles of leaders, first-line managers, middle managers, and executives using materials drawn from over a decade of Agile and Lean adoption experience covering tens of thousands of people within Fortune 100 companies. It also addresses what does and doesn't work well in Agile and Lean adoptions across a diverse set of global cultures.

Intro to Solutions Thinking for Product Managers
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Product managers and product teams face unprecedented challenges as business environments and product ecosystems become increasingly complex and unpredictable.
Customers have tremendous freedom to choose among competing products, and user experience has become a big factor in many purchase decisions. Time-to-market pressure is unrelenting, while product complexity and technical challenges keep increasing. In this environment, businesses must offer solutions that solve the right problem for the right consumer at the right time and the right price.
Solutions Thinking offers a fresh look at how to develop holistic solutions for customer problems and helps teams balance business, usage, and technology to create a compelling and sustainable set of products and services to meet the customer’s current and future needs. Solutions Thinking guides teams from opportunities to solutions using a value-driven approach, and works with traditional, Agile, and hybrid development life cycles.
Many teams just focus on making products when they should be thinking about developing solutions. Solutions Thinking blends a unique collection of proven industry models into a coherent methodology for solution development. The approach is specifically designed to work in complex environments.
*This is a free, one-hour introduction to Solutions Thinking, which is typically a day-long workshop. We will not have time to cover topics in depth. After an overview of the topics, there will be time for a deeper dive into one additional module based on participant preferences. If you would like to participate in the day-long workshop on February 21st, please make a reservation here. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/solutions-thinking-for-product-managers-tickets-30741063348
Who typically attends?
Product managers, Product owners, product planners, product marketing, architects, designers, product engineers, and others working on holistic solution discovery, definition, design, and delivery.

PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering: educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Matt Pfaffenbach, the Director of Telematics at Daimler Trucks North America, will discuss how tractor-trailers are becoming a part of our connected world and the overarching implications this has on transportation as a whole.
“WE’RE MOVING INTO the age of the connected vehicle. And as excited as we might be to have cars that play our ’90s alternative rock Spotify playlists and let us send text messages via voice control, such things are frivolous compared to the safety and efficiency benefits that come when you wire up tractor trailers.” – Wired Magazine |

NedSpace Young Entrepreneurs YESpdx FlashPitch Social The Future Makers and Shakers of the World
Date: February 16th (Thursday)
Time: 5:45 pm to 7:30 pm
Location: NedSpace
Hosted By: Heber Miguel, founder & CEO of Eber Health
The Event
It's finally here! Our very first social event of 2017. Please join us Thursday evening for a FlashPitch Social at NedSpace, Portland's oldest startup space. At this time you’ll have the opportunity pitch your idea to a crowd of young entrepreneurs for business idea feedback or to ask for help.
If you already have a startup company, even better! The format is pretty simple: Anyone who wants to pitch their startup idea or startup will have 60 seconds and a mic to do so (no format, just tell us what you're working on). After your 60 second pitch, you’ll have time for a quick Q&A session.
During the Q&A; you can ask for help, for example if you need marketing suggestions, new business leads or are just looking for a co-founder. At NedSpace we make connections happen ;) Consider this a one-time audition for the best gig of your startup founder life.
After all the pitches are completed, you’ll have a better understanding on who is who in Portland, and what everyone is up in the great Pacific Northwest You’ll also be able to connect with other founders, services, or new business opportunity during the networking part of the event. Hope to see you all there!
Why attend?
Come to build a collaborative network, open doors to new business opportunities, and be in a close community of young entrepreneurs; the current and future makers and shakers of the world.
Who should attend?
If you took the time to read through all of this, then YOU! The event is open to all young entrepreneurs (if you feel young, then you’re good).
All NedSpace events have a Code of Conduct which all participants, members, partners, visitors, vendors, guests must abide by.

Cannabis Unconference
Roll back
| description |

→ |
The High Finance Podcast is hosting Portland’s first Cannabis Unconference revolving around the theme of the cannabis economy.
Limited to the first 50 people
Saturday February 11, 9:00am-4:00pm
NedSpace Broadway
The Event
What you don’t need is another presentation, books, or itineraries planned months ahead of time. Instead, what we all really seek when coming to an event is personal value. The best and most meaningful memories come from when we walk away with thought provoking discussions, new relationships, and those do not happen while sitting in lecture. They happen in the discussions that go on amongst the attendees.
The Goal
The goal of this unconference is to bring forth the brightest minds in the community that feel strongly around the topic of cannabis in its many versions. Then from there, to open a new doorway for opportunities to connect and learn, all while having fun and making it what you want it to be.
The Facilitator
Megan O'Leary the Director of Member Services from OEN is going to facilitate the whole unconference event. A great experienced facilitator makes the event, so prepare yourself for a wonderful time.
9:00am-10:00am Coffee & networking
10:00-11:00am Overview and group agenda setting
11:00-11:45am Session 1
11:45am-12:30pm Session 2
12:30pm-1:30pm Lunch
1:30pm-2:15pm Session 3
2:15pm-3:00pm Session 4
3:00pm-3:30pm Closing remarks
3:30pm-4:30pm please stay for the High Finance Podcast Launch

So, what exactly is an ‘Unconference?’
Think of this as an open conference that is driven by its participants. Unlike traditional conferences, an unconference allows for flexibility, open discussion, and debate, all fueled by its attendees. Innovative conversations with some of the brightest people, important purposes and tasks discussed without any formal agenda, and unplanned dialogue led by ultimately what peaks your interest most.
Why attend?
This is your chance to learn from others, seek out answers, and openly ask questions to what matters most to you. Come to build a collaborative network, establish partnerships, and be in a close community of people that value the same or similar topics of discussion. Open your awareness to new ideas for yourself or your business.
Be exposed to new trends, latest issues, new projects, emerging businesses and tools..
Unconferences are proven to be highly productive for whatever issues people feel most strongly about. EXPECT fascinating questions, surprising results, inspiring quotes of laughter, and hard work.
How Does it Work?
Simple, we provide the theme — cannabis. When you arrive, we will kick off with an ice-breaker, introduce everyone, then break off into building the day's agenda around your needs, interests, and areas of expertise. The sessions will be broken up into 30-minute discussions and spaces are reserved for gatherings that happen throughout the day.
Who should attend?
If you took the time to read through all of this, then YOU! The event is open to anyone with an interest in the topic. The goal is to bring a diverse mix of individuals and professionals from all industries and stages of their podcast. Whether you’re a retailer, grower, packager, distributor, executive, creative, or simply just have interest in the topic of cannabis, we welcome you to join us. All NedSpace events have a Code of Conduct which all participants, members, partners, visitors, vendors, guests must abide by.
