Founder’s Pool Tournament YESpdx Social
Roll back
| description |

Join us at Uptown Billiard Club on Thursday evening (April 27th) for our first Founder Pool Tournament! Aside from the usual networking with other fellow entrepreneurs and friends, there’s a twist! We’ll be having a Founder Pool Tournament with a prize; that would help you as a startup founder or anyone trying to launch a company.
<b>Rules</b>
We’ll have head to head matches; bracket style (similar to March Madness). Winner of the first Founder Pool Tournament will get a free space at NedSpace for a team of up to 3 people (3 hot desk memberships) for a month at NedSpace in downtown Portland. Host Heber Michaels sets all rules, and when a ruling is needed, he alone is the decider.
<b>Who should attend?</b>
The event is open to all young entrepreneurs (remember, young is subjective). If you took the time to read through all of this, then YOU should attend!
<b>Why attend?</b>
Come to build a collaborative network, open doors to new business opportunities, and be in a close community of young entrepreneurs; the current and future makers and shakers of the world. Do you have your own startup or company? Are you a designer, developer, in marketing, student or an aspiring entrepreneur looking to start your own company? Come connect with other young entrepreneurs! You never know who you will meet, what new ideas and collaboration can come from it.
This is a private event (21 and older) with the max capacity of 24 sharp entrepreneurs. Ticket price is $7 so please RSVP. All NedSpace related events have a Code of Conduct which all participants, members, partners, visitors, vendors, guests must abide by. http://nedspace.com/img/NedSpaceCodeofConductv1.4.pdf |

Presented by David Howell
CEO of Avatron
In 2013, the “Summer of Snowden” heightened awareness among businesses and individuals of the insecurity of data stored in the cloud. Despite that, people still routinely use Google Docs, whose corporate owner promises to sell private data to its customers, the advertisers. People still store sensitive data in the cloud, where data breaches are virtually inevitable. Avatron launched Air Connect, an alternative approach to allowing access of personal data from anywhere. Like Skype, Air Connect employs UDP tunneling to forge a direct connection to a remote computer, even if it is behind a stringent firewall or on a dynamic IP address.
We’ll walk through the architecture of Air Connect, discussing design decisions made along the way. We’ll talk through the joys and woes of launching a geeky networking software service on Kickstarter. And we’ll talk about the ultimate demise of the Air Connect service.
<h3>Speaker</h3>
Dave Howell is CEO of Avatron, a popular mobile app developer. Avatron’s apps include Air Sharing, the first iPhone app that allowed management, viewing, and printing of local and remote documents, Air Connect, which lets people connect directly and securely to a personal computer without sending data through the cloud, and Air Display, which turns a tablet into a computer monitor. Before founding Avatron in 2008, Dave was a senior software manager at Apple, where he contributed to productivity software and professional applications. Dave joined Apple when the computer company bought the assets of his previous company, Pablo Media. When he’s not leading software teams, Dave plays piano in a jazz quartet in Portland. On Twitter, you can follow Dave at @dshowell or Avatron at @avatron.

The SaaS Product Roadmap
Roll back
| description |

You know the pain: there are so many features you want to build and bugs you want to fix, but there's not enough time to do it all. How should you prioritize? How can you align your product roadmap with your business goals?
We've all wasted time and money building things that nobody wanted, and we've neglected features and UX improvements that could've made a difference. The question is, how do we know what's the optimal way to use our development hours?
These are some of the topics we'll probably discuss:
• Jobs to Be Done (JTBD) framework to align features with business goals
• Scrum, Agile and Kanban frameworks to prioritize issues and manage dev teams
• How to incorporate user feedback into our product roadmap
• How to manage remote teams effectively
• The Lean way of testing assumptions to avoid building things that nobody wants
We're looking forward to sharing what I've learned from my mistakes building Billy, and learning from your experiences as well.
Coffee, tea and draft beer will be provided. Come hang out with other SaaS founders and share your story! |

Portland Ruby Brigade monthly meeting
Roll back
| description |
We'll have pizza & beer starting at 6pm, so stop by early if you want to have dinner and socialize before the presentations. **This month's meeting is on the 27th floor.**
##PRESENTATIONS at 7pm
###Tim Wade: What we talk about when we talk about unit testing
If you're new to coding you may find TDD one of the harder things to learn when all you want to do is get your hands dirty and write some
code. As you grow this may be further compounded by the fact that no one seems to agree on (or even know) what unit testing is. Like me, you might read up on it, but find it hard to apply the principles you learned in your favorite web framework, which seems to have some ideas of its own. In this talk, I'll compare some common points of view on what we might mean by unit and integration testing, and why we might want to embrace these differences to keep a flexible approach to what we're testing.
###Lauren Voswinkel: Conway's Game of Life Code Retreat.
"We'll take 30-45 minutes to work on Conway's Game of Life. Pair programming is *highly* encouraged, but is not required. We'll take some time to talk about what we learned during the exercise, as well as what approaches worked and what didn't. The whole idea of this exercise is to have a space and time to actively practice coding."
**Please Bring Your Laptops**
After presentations we'll have more socializing time.
##**Thanks to New Relic for providing the venue and beer, pizza & snacks this month!**
ARRIVING BY BIKE? Cyclists are welcome to park their bikes in the New Relic office. Bikes are not allowed in the building lobby, however, and must use the freight elevator. To get your bike up to the 5th floor, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." You can get up by buzzing in with the intercom, and saying you're here for New Relic. Ride on up to the 5th floor, you'll easily find the bike parking.

PDXWIT #Action Women’s Strength Self-Defense Class
Roll back

** Please RSVP on Eventbrite **
Suggested donation in support of the Women’s Strength program: $5-$10
PDXWIT #Action is proud to offer a Women’s Strength self-defense class on June 12th at 5:30. The introductory class is presented by WomenStrength, who introduce all those who identify as women to strategies — including survival-level fighting skills — to defend against sexual assault. This workshop is in support of PDXWIT #Action’s top local issue of supporting public safety. Class activities and discussions are designed to help participants identify their risks, evaluate their strengths and explore their options for dealing with the threat of sexual violence. Class activities focus on practicing verbal and physical strategies and discussion topics focus on sexual and domestic violence. Although the WomenStrength program is operated out of the Portland Police Bureau, the instructors are not police officers. They are highly skilled civilians who teach safety and de-escalation to the community at large.
Note: This training is neither based on nor in support of Portland Police Bureau’s tactics that have been criticized as an excessive use of force.
This event is wheelchair accessible. Please contact us for any accommodation requests or questions. Beverages will be provided.
The agenda for the evening is as follows:
5:30pm: Arrive and get settled
5:45pm: Workshop begins
7:00pm: Workshop ends
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Trans and non-binary people are always welcome at our events.

Roll back

<p>Everyone knows that intrusion of privacy is a problem, but how much do you know about whether it is legal? The question of privacy in US law is complicated, but luckily, we will be having Darin Sands of Lane Powell coming to help us all learn the basics. Darin specializes in data privacy, so bring you're questions about the law on data breaches or online privacy requirements.</p> <p>Snacks will be provided.</p> <p><b>Speaker Bio</b>: Darin Sands is a lawyer with Lane Powell whose practice includes a focus on data security and privacy. Darin represents clients on matters including data breach and privacy litigation. He currently represents numerous companies in ongoing data breach litigation and data breach response preparation efforts. He also frequently counsels clients on privacy-related legal challenges. Darin graduated from Harvard Law in 2004, and he has his Yellow Belt in Legal Lean Sigma and Project Management. He is the Co-chair of the Firm’s Privacy and Data Security Practice Group, and he splits his time between Lane Powell’s Portland and Seattle offices.</p> <p><br><b>Location: </b>CrowdCompass has graciously offered to host this meetup! (Thanks to our member Joseph for arranging that!) They are located at 308 Southwest 2nd Avenue, Suite 200, Portland, OR.</p> |

Data Privacy PDX - Data Privacy for Activists (Encore)
Roll back
| description |

<p><i>ENCORE WORKSHOP - For those of you who couldn't make the first workshop, here is your chance. We will be doing this at a new location and time to make it available to more people.</i></p> <p>Data privacy is important to everyone, but is felt even more keenly by those who advocate for causes. Here in Portland, everyone has something they are passionate about, and we often spend our time and energy supporting a good cause. With privacy concerns being very real for many participants in these causes, organizers must be prepared to provide better privacy protections for the communications and data that are related to their efforts.</p> <p><br>This workshop is to introduce foundational data privacy strategies and teach easy solutions for helping activists protect the privacy of those they engage with and themselves.</p> <p>Greg Stromire will be hosting the workshop. Topics will include:</p> <p>• <b>Environment For Privacy</b>: Why is Privacy Essential; Privacy, Security, & Anonymity; Privacy Law</p> <p>• <b> Privacy for Communications</b>: Messaging; Email; Voice</p> <p>• <b>Securing Your Devices</b>: Mobile Devices; Personal Computers</p> <p>• <b>Protected Internet Use</b>: HTTPS; Using VPNs; Best Practices Online</p> <p>• <b>Data Storage for Private Data</b>: Encrypted Portable Devices; Cloud Storage; Individual Files</p> <p>This special 2-hour Data Privacy PDX workshop is free to attend and light refreshments will be provided.</p> <p>
<b>Name Tags</b> - We will provide name tags because it helps people feel more comfortable striking up conversations, but please feel free to use your online handle, first name only, or skip the name tag if you are more comfortable. </p> |
