Shabnam Jahromi is a Technical Account Manager at Jama Software. She will share her story and explain how she is directly impacted by the ban and what this means for her future.
Lisa Yu has been practicing immigration law since 1997. She specializes in corporate immigration matters ranging from non-immigrant visas to permanent resident applications (green cards). Her clients range from multinational corporations in the financial and information technology sectors to hospitals and universities. She has developed a particular expertise in labor certification applications, employment-based immigrant visa petitions and adjustment of status applications.
Chanpone Sinlapasai is a partner at Marandas & Sinlapasai. She focuses on immigration law and specializes in assisting survivors of crime. She strongly believe that victims' right is a human right, regardless of alienage. Her immigration practice also assist clients before the Immigration Court, Board of Immigration Appeals, and U.S. Court of Appeals.

Effectively conveying information and knowledge to others is a critical skill. But how do we, as humans, learn best? When do people start to lose focus on our message? How can you as a coach, facilitator, trainer, teacher (one who wants to help others learn), or presenter use the latest in brain-based learning to help those you are teaching to learn? This brief overview of the content in Sharon Bowman's <i>Training from the Back of the Room!</i> is an invitation to see who is doing the most talking, moving, and writing in all of your communications. You will also get a glimpse of the 6 learning principles and 6 memory vehicles that you might use in your next presentation, training, or coaching session. This interactive session is an invitation to look at how we traditionally teach and how we naturally learn. It expresses the evolution of training from the traditional hierarchical norm to an emergent partnership norm.

Evan A Thomas, PhD, PE, MPH is an Associate Professor and Director of the Sweet (Sustainable Water, Energy and Environmental Technologies) Laboratory, and a Faculty Fellow in the Institute for Sustainable Solutions at Portland State University.
The SweetLab develops and implements cellular and satellite based "Internet of Things" sensor technologies designed to improve the collection of, and action on, data in global health programs. We deploy and study high efficiency cookstoves, water pumps, household water filters, sanitation systems, pedestrian footbridges and other developing world appropriate technologies. The SweetLab has projects in India, Nepal, Indonesia, the Philippines, Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda, Haiti and other countries.

<p>Dave Shinsel will provide an overview of available depth sensors, and a deep-dive on Intel’s RealSense depth sensors, including a new sensor that adds visual SLAM capability. He will discuss how these sensors work in conjunction with Computer Vision technologies for various robotics applications, including object avoidance, person interaction, object recognition and localization, and SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping). Further the talk will cover how to access these capabilities via their ROS wrappers.</p> <p>Dave Shinsel is the Lead Robotics Architect in Intel’s Perceptual Computing Group. He has an extensive background in all levels of robotics, with particular focus on vision and sensing technologies. Prior to this role, Dave was the Director of the Intel® RealSense SDK, created and led the Intel® Graphics Performance Analyzers, and led development of the graphics drivers for the Apple MacBook* Air. In his “spare time,” Dave has been building robots for fifteen years. He has received a "Backyard Genius Award" from Popular Mechanics magazine, won a number of robot competitions, and competed on TV in the Syfy Channel’s Robot Combat League, where he and his daughter (also an engineer at Intel) won the $100,000 grand prize with their 7 foot, 9 inches tall, fighting robot, "Crash." Join PDXWIT #Action to go to a Reproductive Health Rally in Salem on Tuesday, February 28th. In alignment with our recent PDXWIT #Action survey, women’s health is a top issue for our members. PDXWIT knows that affordable family planning is critical for women, especially those that choose to pursue tech careers.
We will be organizing a carpool down to Salem. If you can drive or need a ride please fill in this Google doc and self-organize with your driver to schedule rides. We will be departing Portland at 10:30 a.m.
We will meet on the corner of NE Court St and E Summer Street NE at 11:30, look for the bright green PDXWIT T-shirts. The rally is from 12 PM - 1 PM on the steps of the capitol in Salem. After the rally we will get an informal lunch in the area. Please fill in the Google doc if you would like to join so that we can find a restaurant that accommodates all of us. Feel free to bring protest and rally signs.
This rally is to support The Reproductive Health Equity Act, an Oregon State Legislature bill. The Reproductive Health Equity Act (HB 2232) is an important leap toward ensuring that all Oregonians have meaningful access to the care they need. Thousands of Oregonians still lack coverage for the full range of reproductive health services. You can learn more about the bill here.
The rally is produced by Pro-Choice Coalition of Oregon,a diverse, statewide coalition.They are working to create a world where access to reproductive health care doesn’t depend on who you are, where you live or how much you earn; where every Oregonian who can become pregnant has the opportunity to choose their own path to a healthy and meaningful life.
Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering: educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Trans and non-binary people are always welcome at our events.

Interested in giving a talk or presenting at a conference, but not sure where to begin? Or maybe you know what you want to do, but you're nervous about something (and you're not quite sure what!) Giving talks and speaking in general can be nervewracking - but it doesn't have to be!
Join us on Feb. 15th for an evening of fun, functionality, and friendship! We're going to help you get ready to create an idea, submit a proposal to a conference CFP, and prep for your talk! This workshop is designed to help you prepare for ACT-W (Advancing the Careers of Technical Women) and the CFP that is due March 1st, but you can come even if you aren't interested in submitting a talk to ACT-W. We'll discuss the ins and outs of CFPs, how to prepare, how to pitch yourself, and how to avoid self-doubt.
