Many are interested in data science as a career. In this presentation, we’ll break data science down into smaller pieces that can be better understood and might help you with deciding if some or all of data science is a career path that you want to pursue. We’ll also get into some of the additional skills critical to success as a data scientist with the objective of being effective and/or contribute meaningfully to a data science project, and not just get the job title.

After 15 years of experience in a variety of data management disciplines, including database administration, ER modeling, ETL development, and data architecture, Asoka completed his MS Predictive Analytics at Northwestern University and has been a practicing data scientist for 4 years.
His daily technical work focuses on text analytics and figuring out how to optimize performance for processing bigger and bigger data sets. He also has a passion for the organization transformation involved in adopting analytics as a source of competitive advantage, exploring critical questions such as: How does an organization get there? What needs to be done? What organization design and leadership changes are needed to get the most benefit from analytics?

This presentation will show how the Linux kernel and container technologies can isolate and control the processes to provide a secure, isolated compute system. Docker or other technologies can be used to manage capabilities and securely deploy containers. This will demonstrate vulnerabilities unique to containers, and techniques to break out of vulnerable containers. We will show examples of deploying microservices securely with containers and areas that need further research to allow other applications to run securely in a private or public cloud. |

Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.

For one day, you'll immerse yourself in the professional experience of software development, collaborating with your peers under the guidance of our industry-professional instructional staff.
The first hour of the workshop will be dedicated to helping students get their computers up and running with the necessary tools. Lecture will start at 9 AM.

But, could that have been predicted?</p> <p>In this practical workshop, you'll use a dataset that contains previous Oscar winners to build a prediction model to guess the winner for Best Picture Award. Much has been said about building re-frame applications in the small, but how well do these same techniques perform building large applications? In practice, our team found traditional approaches to events and state management led to highly-coupled code that was difficult to maintain and test.
In this talk we'll explore *why* this happens and some simple techniques you can use to create more re-usable re-frame code without boilerplate or any 3rd party libraries.
Biography
Ryan is a Clojure developer, author, and founder of Homegrown Labs (http://homegrownlabs.ca ), a consultancy and education company based in Winnipeg, Canada.
Since April 2017, Ryan & Homegrown have been working with Funding Circle building rich admin applications using ClojureScript & re-frame.
Beyond consulting, Ryan organizes Clojure Remote (http://clojureremote.com )–an online conference focussed on remote Clojure & ClojureScript developers. Keep an eye out for ClojureScript Days coming Summer of 2018. |
